Three Michael Schenker Licks

Here's the next Three-For-All lesson focusing on hard rock/metal guitar god Michael Schenker. Schenker influenced countless big names in rock and metal, but one of the biggest of his fans was Randy Rhoads - so that's saying a lot.
This lesson pulls three ideas from this legendary six-string icon from MSG songs 'Captain Nemo' and 'Into the Arena,' along with a lick from the live version of UFO's classic 'Rock Bottom.'

Michael Schenker is really the bridge between the 70's and 80's guitar eras. Most of the 70's heroes, like Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore etc didn't pickup on the 80's shred, but Schenker did, and also was a part of forming it. It's probably because he was so young in the 70's - I think he was just seventeen when he joined UFO - that he was still in his formative age when the hard rock progressed into metal. But apart from being a shredder pioneer, Schenker also was, and is, a very melodic player. On the UFO Phenomenon album that is mentioned here, is a ballad called Time On My Hands, where Schenker goes into an incredibly beautiful melodic solo. It's not technically hard to play, but no-one else but Schenker could have come up with that idea, and also he plays it so well, and his guitar tone is pristine. Listen to it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmSKvK2cdcm_fbw.html

I would say Blackmore was the 'first' Shredder. If you listen to live versions of Wring that neck, Highway Star, Light in the Black, Gates of Babylon you can hear the shredding coming through. He was also one of the first players to use 4 fingers for soloing in mainstream rock.

"Michael Schenker is really the bridge between the 70's and 80's guitar eras" I've been telling people this for years. Michael's influence is profound. I would also add Gary Moore and Eddie Van Halen as players that also bridged that gap from 70's and 80's guitar eras.

That song blew my mind when I heard it for the first time. I think the only "sin" on all these UFO albums was the overwhelming ammount of slow paced ballads, I think it breaks the flow of the album too much. "Walk On Water" from 1995 reunion did not suffer that problem.

His crowd interaction and stepping to the forefront was really a surprise and he seemed to enjoy it! Can’t help but to mention after playing a 2 hr and 45 minute show he whips out an over 8 minute solo on rock bottom that was the best live rock performance I’ve ever heard, and I’ve seen most of the greats.

I was 13 yrs old in 1975 and bought UFO's "Phenomenon" on a whim. Had no idea who UFO was but back in those days, stores that sold records always had what was called a "cut out" bin. These were albums that were marked down because they either had an error on the album cover or just didn't sell. Got home and listened to it and was SHOCKED at how good they were, especially Schenker. Went back the next week and bought "Force It".

A hughely influential guitarist with an instantly recognizable style. Sure, Ritchie Blackmore and Uli Roth were partly or fully responsible for making the classically inspired type of playing popular but Schenker was part of and picked up on that too. The instrumental "Bijou Pleasurette" off the first MSG album shows that he was capable of making Baroque style music and the same goes for "Into The Arena", in a rock format.

He almost patented that rapid fire guitar attack, smooth and wide vibrato during the 70's. When most of the guitar players that became a big name on the next decade where barely learning the pentatonic box.

It's also important to note Michael's contribution to the Scorpions, especially on the Love drive album which he cowrote and played on. This album broke the Scorpions in the US. Listen to the song Coast to Coast, he wrote it and he plays on it, including the solo! Another brilliant track worth mentioning from MSG is of course The desert song. Great video, I enjoyed it. Cool video. Always wanted to get stuck into Capt Nemo riff... as for Arena, I thought it was a D7 ascending and a Dsus4 descending... either way... been a Schenker fan since my first guitar days in 1980 😂. Good work buddy

Thank you! I LOVE Schenker! All of that late 70's early 80's hard rock and metal from Europe was dynamite! Stay tuned for more!

Into the Arena is my Schenker favourite. I still listen to it regularly ( with William Shatner intro off Temple of Rock ). Saw Michael play a few years ago at Bradford City Hall , England. It was amazing and totally surreal...

Michael Schenker is probably my favorite electric guitar player. I don't always like the songs he plays in (specially the MSG stuff), but I always love his playing!

Nice video thanks! I rate him above everyone else I've heard in the last 40 yrs. The phrasing and feeling he puts in his solos is musical perfection for electric guitar imo. Please do some more Vids showing why some of his iconic solos are so powerful and melodic. - Lost Horizons maybe?

Your commentary is awesome. I really enjoy your insights into the history of the players you profile, and getting into the theory behind things. Please ignore the ADD mouth breathers and keep up the good work. I was always fascinated how Randy was so heavily influenced by Schenker. 🤘🎸🎶

Thank you this is great. I would really love it if we could see your fingers close up. I like that you’re not anonymous but once we know who you are I’d rather see precisely where your fingers are going for these intricate little formulas from Michael Schenker. plus I never knew Randy was influenced by Michael but I certainly see this now that you explained it. Thanks again for gifting your time 🙂
