$499 is very expensive for the Pentax half frame camera. You could get a good used Olympus half frame camera for less than half of that.

Awesome vids Jared! I wanted to ask you a question as I am looking for my first full frame digital camera. I have a Cannon 90D now but would like to venture in to full frame. I love o shoot RAW on fast moving subjects like sports air shows etc. but also low light such as lighting, city lights, moon, stars, astrophotography, and low light sporting events. Could you give me your recommendation if money is no object and a budgeted option of around $3,000 or less? Should I wait until Cannon's new cameras are all out? Thanks BC

I would say the Z6iii is more than just a contender. In particular for video shooters. 6k60 raw, 5.4k pro res, 4k 120, and fhd 240p make it possibly the best camera for video in its price range. The R6ii probably does edge out the Z6iii for action photography, but the Z6iii edges it out for video. And both demolish the A7IV. Who wouldve thought the day would come where canon is better for photography and nikon is better for video lol

I agree that nikon did a good job with the new z6 series, but comparing it to the A7IV seems a little bit dumb 😂😂 I mean, seriously dude. It was released in 2021, so what do you expect ..? The time it was released was way ahead of its other competitors. Where was z6iii at that time....????😂😂 you're just being biased 😂 accept that. And for z6iii, wait for the A7V. I'll reply to you when it arrives. And don't forget that Nikon canon uses Sony sensors, so King is always a king.

(Literally typing this on a Sony phone while wearing Sony headphones) I know the A7iv is older, but it's the only camera Sony currently has to compare to the R6ii and Z6iii. That's just how tech goes. Until the A7v is released, it's going to be compared to similar offerings from Canon and Nikon. And when it does come out, im sure people will compare the Z6iii and R6ii to it. And then the r6iii and Z6iv will come out. Then the A7vi, and so on and so on

Hey Fro….make sure your up coming AF test between Canon, Sony and Nikon are done in high school sporting venues, where lighting conditions are less than ideal. Conducting AF test outdoors on bright sunny day will NOT stress(piece of cake) the AF sensors. Can you also use the new rf 24-105 f2.8, I suspect it’ll perform better than the rf 24-70 f2.8 in tracking while zooming in and out, because it’s “parfocal”.

Thanks for a great fix as usual. I would say that it is really great to see new film camera, but it would be great if it would be mirrored and full frame with the same old fashioned style and interchangeable lenses. Well at least for me🤷‍♂️

The Z6 III is amazing, as a Nikon shooter, that's my favorite Nikon camera now. (The rest of my Top 3 is the R5 and the Sony A7C II) And also, I am not a film shooter, but I ABSOLUTELY ADORE those Instax cameras, like, I find it so extremely cute that normal people who aren't photographers that are out there taking their photos in a physical state to save them or display them out somewhere :') However, of course I prefer my digital photos, they also make sending them out to your friends easy (You straight up can't do that with an Instax camera there's literally only one copy of each photo)

I wish I had the Pentax 17...in 1991. Money got tight and I would not buy any current SLR then. Just after that I ended use of my first and only good camera- I bought in 1973 (Rangefinder Minolta Hi Matic) and did not get a 2.1 OLY Camedia until early 2001.

INT - DAYLIGHT We open the scene on Jared getting up in the morning. He works out a little, swishes some mouthwash and throws on his favorite “I Shoot Raw” shirt. Today he’s not bringing a camera. Insread, he slides his hand deftly into his favorite set of brass knuckles, because he has one appointment today…. Kodak.

I'm waiting for the Canon R0 with 12Mp and AF settings for flies. 😂

As an Austrian it still hurts to hear that the Z6III costs 2500 $. Here it costs 3000€ (about 3200 $). That‘s just too much money. Especially when you get a Z8 for a little less than 4000€.

Don't see why they should. It's still a good enough camera and at a cheap price the last time I saw. That camera is more for people that want to get a taste of Nikon/ entry. I don't see why they would stop tho.

There's rumors of a mark ii version of the Z50 later this year, as well as a high performance crop sensor "Z500".

My Polaroid swinger was about that size in 1966.

ive been shooting fuji instaxwide in a lomography lomograflok back on my 4x5 crown graphic. it has been a widely horrendously inconsistent film for me. ive been shooting pictures for 48 years, and yes i used a polaroid long ago (the kind you had to peel apart) and i have more than half a clue as to what im doing but out of the 40 shots ive taken so far, im willing to bet im at under 50% that they turned out (exposure wise). im metering with a Weston Master III, a Gossen Luna-Pro and with my Canon 5d3 and 5d4, and translating those settings to my graflex. highly disappointed in the results. i KNOW it has a very narrow exposure latitude but using triple (sometimes only double) metering and going with those settings ought to get me higher percentage results. regular negatives look spot on in the 30 or so 4x5 film sheets and the several 120 rolls ive shot (with a roll film back). i wish instax had better keep rate

The problem with half-frame film cameras is not that their "sensor" is the size of APS-C, but that in the natural way of holding it, it's a portrait format. If you want to shoot landscape or really, anything other than a portrait, you're going to twisting it 90 degrees.

Thank you for this camera news blurb! I'm trying to understand why someone would buy the new Pentax film camera when they could buy an old or vintage one for so much less $?

With my old Nikon film camera you would wind all of the film out of the canister and as the frames are shot it winds them back in. This means that if you open the back the photos you've taken are already safely inside the canister. I understand why a new film camera would do it differently.

I'm more interested in the Pentax Black and White Only Camera x.

I would have preferred a double frame film camera (a la Xpan), as I love panos, but that format isn't very social-media friendly

A $500, 35mm half-frame, zone focus, fixed lens film camera? What is this, 1979? I guess hipsters will like it, because, well, hipsters.

BUT . . . the Z6iii (for now) also has to deal with a $2,750 Canon R5 (original). Clearance sales are wonderful things.

I quite like the look of the Pentax 17 and right now considering ordering one soon. The fact there's a new film camera out is exciting and hopefully it'll inspired future (but limited) development of new film cameras. The saddest thing I've seen are people complaining about the price. They think it should be priced the same as a used 40 year old camera off of eBay and come with an f1.4 lens or some shit. Something tells me a lot of people don't know how much stuff costs to develop and produce for a niche market😅

@bburchellphotos I'm sure it'll be an overall hit for years for Pentax and Pentax alone. But it's not a market that can sustain much of any competition. And Pentax doesn't make enough capital to share market share for what's going to be a good thing for them after just barely surviving

My theory is, that they just really want to make the best possible cameras atm and put all their Ressources in one release at the time. So first z9, then z8. Now z6ii but maybe they now have the resources for the dx line🙏🙏

Why did they put the iso setting dial there on the Pentax 17 ? When the film has a factory sensitivity.

Because you have to set the ISO so the camera knows how to calibrate the light meter. If you have 800 speed film but have your camera set to 200 you're gonna be overexposing by 2 stops

@@silbay Because this camera lacks the functionality to read DX encoding. Most cameras introduced after DX encoding also had the ability to manually set the ISO so one could over or underexpose their film as they saw fit

I paid $10 for a mint Canon AE-1 Program with a 50mm f1.8 on it😁 Cant wait to get a battery and some film and try it out.

If I had money to buy the Z6III, I would get a GH7 instead.... My S5II does pretty much everything the Z6III does, with the exception of the faster sensor readout, but I can get 4k120 with the GH7, plus better autofocus and more lens options, including lots of anamoprphic lens options.

Ricoh Pentax is making a bold move by making a half frame film camera for 500 in 2024... Big brass ones that company. I have the Pentax k1000 still. Works fine although my film camera spark has died

It's good to see new film cameras, I hope there will be more. The Pentax 17 is pretty pricy for what it offers - I recently got a Nikon FM2/Titanium for 450 EUR, my FM3A cost me 300 EUR. Both came in mint quality and are way better cameras with zillions of exchangeable lenses, that are available on the market. But of course, they do not come with warranty.

My grandpa would have been the buyer of those film camera, too sad he passed away 40 years ago.

Hmm, Pentax 17 crippled film camera… 🤔 I know how about a Canon EOS IX7 APS film camera! 🤪🤪 I’ll go with a second hand AE1 Program or EOS film camera, perhaps an EOS 50e plus kit lens £100 and have fun learning eye control AF!

How can you set the ISO on a film camera, without changing the film?

I would assume you set the ISO when you load the new roll, not change it while shooting it, just my guess.

You can change the iso set on the dial mid roll, but you will end up with over or under exposed shots. Some film stocks have some more latitude than others.

I remember being poor in the '80s and buying camera film in bulk to save money. I was rolling my own, as they say, in a bathroom with the lights out and a towel wedged against the bottom of the door. It's nice of Pentax to offer to bring me back to those days, but I'm a "hell, no!" at this point.

Z6iii is a Canon R10 competitor with additional weather sealing and Better EVF. 😂 One of Nikon's biggest let down. Too late. Too old. As a wildlife guy.. I expected better.

To tell the camera what film you are using so the metering will work correctly.

Black expands in warm condition, which can eventually affect the lens elements. Also, it’s nice PR. You can spot a Canon camera right away in TV.

At least since 1990, long telephoto L lenses have been branded as white. I think the only L long telephoto lens that was ever made in black was the EF 200mm F2.8 L.

a1, a9, a7 and even going back 10 years ago they all look the same .... what a shiitty way to cheap on buyers ... or maybe sony can't afford a designers ...

Pentax are they trying to get into the film market with a vertical shooting format. But auto, manual focus what, madness - fringe they could sell to a number of people who will attempt to sell these on in twenty years time, as a forgotten classic.

Film cameras could be fun, but for the limited features I wouldn't care for one. Not at $500 anyway. For that you can get a digital point and shoot with a better lens and zoom capabilities. That's just my take on it. I remember my dad getting a Polaroid and thinking they were the future! LOL! I wonder what he would think of their resurfacing in the camera world.
