    What about rf full frame- ahhhh 😭 Edit: I think it’s great how Canon finally let sigma make some rf glass and I think this is a good start. I am just hoping the rf full frame glass comes soon because I just picked up the R6 Mii within the past year and I’ve been looking for some more affordable (unadapted) zooms. Like the holy trinity zooms (16-35mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8)

    Adapt. I have mostly Sigma Art lenses on the R6 II and they are fantastic. The Sigma 50 1.4 is 99% as sharp as the RF 1.2 version, costs 1/3 the price, and actually focuses 2x faster than the native Canon RF 50s (both of them). And even with the adapter it's more compact than the RF .. and you still get full 12/40 fps.

    Looks good as a walk around lens on the R7. Nice and compact. The only RF lens I have thus far is a TTArtisan 35mm F0.9 - which is of course manual. I have been picking up EF L lenses for a steal and although they are a bit more bulky, the quality is just next level. EF 100-400 L is ii, EF 500 F4 is mk1 - and a ef-s 10-22 all for under$2600 altogether. EF 24-70 F2.8 L vs this lens? You know, with my speedbooster that EF “26-77 F2.0” still looks more tempting… just more bulky

    Would this lens work on a Canon R8 full frame for video if shooting in APSC mode?

  • @kevindiaz3459

    @kevindiaz3459

    16 күн бұрын

    Probably, it will with other crop sensor lenses. However, the cropped modes will probably be the only modes available as the camera will grey out the non-crop modes when an APS-C lens is attached. Can't say for sure until they are available and people can try it out. In the past, crop lenses from Sigma could be used on a full frame and didn't change anything, but those cameras were not intended to have crop lenses on them so that is likely why there was no crop mode. I feel like it's more likely to be the other way, where the camera is made to be able to use crop lenses and it auto detects them and places the camera into crop mode, limiting what you can do with video modes.

    @@starbuk138 Well, there's all the normal things: friends and family, the castle, the "Partners" statue, little details like the graves while waiting in line for Haunted Mansion, that sort of thing. But specifically I'm taking the faster prime into the line at Star Tours in order to get a clear shot of C3P0 and R2D2. 3P0 moves and it's a low light situation so I need a fast lens and something that can handle a higher ISO so I can get a shutter speed of at least 1/200th. Now, I don't need that beast in order to get shots of the costumed characters like Snow White. An f/2.8 would do just fine for that. But I'll have it so I'll use it! There's also the stationary props in Galaxy's Edge like the Millennium Falcon and the costumed characters there. When I go to Fantasy Land I'll lean on the railing at the Tea Cups and do a shutter drag to get some motion shots, and do my best to do the same at the merry-go-round. There's a shop on Main Street that sells crystal knick knacks and I like to go in there and get shots of those with really shallow depth of field. And because it's shiny crystal you get a LOT of bokeh balls! I can't wait to see what it looks like with an f/1.2! Are you going there soon? I'm getting the Genie+ service so the park photographers can take photos of me and my family.

    I think this is based on other versions (i.e. for different mirrorless systems) of it and not the old Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM which was released over 10+ years ago. In any case, I still have the latter and will continue to use it with an EF-RF adapter since this new one has no IS and the IQ improvement doesn't look to be significant (if any). That being said, the new one is much lighter and more compact (and doesn't need an adapter).

A full frame lens like the rf 100-500 on a cropped sensor would be the equivalent of a 160-800 mm, but this lens is already an rf-s lens, so it is aimed at this mount. What else is a small, crop-sensor camera for if it isn't travel? Mind you, for giggles I took the R10 with me to shoot a motorsport event recently and it was pretty damn good at it. So much so I left the 7D2 in the car.

    The bit that I struggle to understand is why a lens designed for crop sensor cameras such as the Sigma DC range is, would be affected by that 1.6 crop factor. I understand that say, an RF50 on an R7 gives you that 1.6x factor, but this particular lens? I'd love for someone to explain to us newbies how a crop sensor lens on an APS-C body still has the crop factor? Why call it an 18-50? Why not a 29-80 lens?

    Field of view is a characteristic of the sensor, not the lens. The lens is an 18-50mm whether or not it's on a full frame or crop camera. However, the image circle for this lens doesn't cover the full sensor of a full frame camera, so the crop factor allows you to understand the equivalent focal length in 35mm terms. Again, crop factor is a characteristic of the sensor so the lens focal length doesn't change just because it's designed for crop sensors. Hope that helps.

    I have always asked that question myself. But i guess it is to make it easier to distinguish between the lenses of full frame and apsc. Because there were some 28-300 for full frame also. And when you see 18mm-xmm, you can tell that it isn't for full frame. If it said 29-80, you might get confused if it is for full frame or apsc.

  • @Hodenkat

    Exactly! Why would we still need to do the crop factor calculation on a lens specifically designed for a Canon APS-C (X1.6)? Even more messed up is the R7 will show you're at 18mm when you are all the way zoomed out. So is it lying? Is it 18mm or is it really 29?

  • @jordhall

    @jordhall

    16 күн бұрын

    @@Hodenkat as I mentioned, it's not the lens that has a different focal length on a crop body. The focal length is the same no matter the sensor. The field of view, however, changes based on the crop factor of the sensor. So on an R5, the lens is indeed an 18-50mm. Factoring in the crop factor for crop lenses has always been a thing and always will be for consistency.

Hello ??? FACT : Yes , IF you really need autofocus. Yes, they are "licenced" . Yes some of them have IS ... But there have been many 3rd party RF-mount lenses out there , licenced or not, for fullframe and aps-c , from various producers , for several years now.... I have a few of them... all in RF mount : 50/0.95 , 35/0.95 , 25/0.95 , 28/1.2 , 10/2.8 , 7.5/2.0 .... . No AF. No IS. No L, No Zoom. Just plain beautiful manual basic prime but ultrafast lenses. And VERY affordable... I LOVE Canon cameras, I have a dozen of them and I prefer them for their colour science and menu and other stuff... but they are not always best with lenses... YES I have many Canon lenses but I also have and still will buy other brands for lenses... open your mind and dare to explore options..

    I'm still confused as to why an APS-C lens for Canon would be marked as 18-50 when the crop factor would make it a 28.8 to 80mm? Even the internal display shows zoom focal lengths as what they are marked on the lens. Why are we still doing these crop factor calculations? Why not make it 11.25mm to 31.25mm and then call it an 18-50? So messed up. I have both the R7 and R6-ii so buying APS-C lenses doesn't make sense for me. I want to be able to share lenses between the two. Nice option even at that price. It's a f/2.8!

    @@jordhallDoes it mean that with this lens on a crop sensor body at 18mm the field of view will not be equivalent to that of 18mm with a full frame lens on a full frame body? I had the impression that if I use a lens that is made specifically for crop sensor cameras (meaning it doesn’t cover the full 35mm sensor on full frame) on an APSC body like the R7 at a certain focal length, the FOV at this focal length will be same as that of a full frame lens on a full frame camera. Is this incorrect? I get that if I use a lens designed for crop sensors on a full frame camera, the lack of sensor area coverage results in the 1.5x crop (same with exceeding sensor coverage when using full frame glass on crop sensor bodies)

  • @jordhall

    @jordhall

    15 күн бұрын

    @@kamezu see how complicated it gets when you try to make all these exceptions? It's very easy. For every lens, the focal length is the same no matter what camera you put it on. The field of view or full frame equivalent focal length depends on the crop factor of the sensor. 18mm is 18mm no matter what. You use the crop factor to understand the field of view for that camera specifically.
