In this week’s episode, we discuss my leaving Medium Format for a Full Frame camera. For the past three years I've used the Fuji GFX100s medium format camera to capture my landscape images, which I've been very happy with. But, recently I noticed a troubling trend with regards to the photos I was capturing with it that led me to looking at the other available options on the camera market today. It's been quite a few years since I've seriously entertained the idea of switching camera systems, and in this video I'll review why you haven't seen me using my medium format camera recently - along with what my plan is moving forward. I hope you enjoy this week's video and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

You will love the Z8 and what the Z Lens lineup provides. I started with the Z6 II 4 years ago and got the Z8 3 months ago. I love the versatility it offers without compromising on the quality. I love doing any kind of photography and some videography. Landscapes, Macro, Astro, Wildlife, Portraits, and whatnot, and this setup can cover it all. I am really happy with my choice to get the Z8, I bet quite soon you will feel the same. Congrats and I wish you take this camera to some amazing places!

There always comes a time when you need to either rethink or upgrade your tools of trade. I use an Olympus, (I’ve reached that age!) mostly with a 40-150mm lens (80-300mm equivalent) attached and have another that takes me to 400mm (800mm), plus others for macro, street etc. Can’t believe you’ve been without for so long! Have fun with your new toys, Mark!

Hello from Grand Teton workshop. I started out using Nikon from the very beginning. I've liked the system and never really had any desire to switch. I finally decided with the Nikon Z7ii and all of the fantastic lens you mentioned. At Grand Teton, I used the 24-120 lens most of the workshop and the 100-400 lens, which is absolutely amazing. It's even better with a 1.4x adapter added to it. I even think they look better with a green camera wrap. I enjoyed meeting you, working and learning from you. Thank you very much for your generous time and your insight. The 24-120 lens is the best. Thank you for these wonderful videos.

Sounds like the right move for you and as a hobbiest in the Nikon Z and F system ,including the Z8 and 24-120 f4 I think you will continue to love it, although for landscape my Z7 is all that is needed and it is smaller ,lighter and lower priced and with an L bracket like the Small Rig one then it is probably big enough on the grip, enjoy!

I also switched to the Nikon Z8 (though, I did Fuji and then briefly Sony which was a disaster). The Z8 is a great all around camera. I recently did astro with it and the 14-24mm. Its DR left little to desire. What I really love about it is that you can setup a function button for 'settings recall.' This makes it so easy to switch from a Landscape settings to high-SS action when an animal enters the scene. For astro, the starlight mode is great. One recommended accessory: get a Hoodman HoodEYE eyecup. It makes all the difference when you are using the EVF. Lenses: 100-400mm is a great tele option for landscapes and occasional wildlife/ macro. For landscapes, the 24-120mm f/4 is probably a better option than the 24-70mm f/2.8; same IQ when stopped down but the former is half the price of the latter. Having said, I have the 24-70mm f/2.8 as I also use it for portrait.

If you want lightweight, get the Z7 classic. Dirt cheap now used. ISO64 base ISO. For landscape work it does everything you would get from the Z8. Also, you get a mechanical shutter. I got the 20mm f1.8 and the 24-120 f4. Perfect combination.

The new Fuji 500mm is AMAZING plus you can add the 1.4x if needed. Nikon has a good exposure latitude, but after seeing GFX files, they seem to have a lot more, especially with the full 16-bit files. That being said, the most important thing is being connected with the tools you feel comfortable with and help you create. Best of luck with your decision.

Even though we are, in many ways, quite different in our approaches to the craft, there are some interesting similarities. I too have focal ranges covered from 14mm to 400mm (or even to 560mm if I count my 1.4x extender, but I rarely use that any more). My most used lens is my 24-105 f4. Excellent image quality and versatile focal range.

It's very enlightening to hear your thoughts and reasoning regarding your gear, Mark. I recall the first clips I saw of you when you were considering the switch to Fujifilm's XT-4. Though I'm committed to a different brand, I may not always be. But like you, I am rather pleased to have coverage of a wide range of focal lengths without gaps. It's interesting to note some of the work by your compatriot Michael Shainblum is often taken with a 100-400 or thereabouts. It's nice to have options.

I think you’re really going to love that setup! Either way both systems produce great images and we know it’s all about each persons preference. With that said I love my Z9 paired with the 14-24, 24-70 2.8’s and as well I have the 24-120 and 100-400. At some point you may try the 600 6.3. Great not only for your occasional wildlife shots while doing your landscapes but I’ve had fun utilizing it for some landscape work as well. Just a different look. I will also mention that 24-120 is fantastic for macro shots again while shooting the big picture landscapes it’s great for looking at the smaller picture around you. A fantastic lens all around. What filter system are you using if any with the Z lenses, especially the 14-24?

Mark, thank you for the video. Using a 200mm lens on a Fujifilm GFX100 and cropping to match the field of view of a Nikon FX sensor effectively increases the focal length to about 300mm in FX terms. And of course there are workarounds to increase the reach even further, But of course welcome to Nikon family regardless, good choice. :)

I have a D850 and a lot of F mount glass. Started with D7000, then D750. Lately, I've been very temped to get a Z8. Just don't want to start over with Z lenes. I know I can use the FTZ adapter, but it's hard to justify, since the 850 is still amazing. I would love to have the IB stabilization; and have you looked at the NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S Lens? My dream of owning a 600mm is at least feasible with that lens.

While I respect your choice to move to the Z8, I just looked at that camera and at $3500 for the body alone, that’s way beyond my budget for a new camera. For a professional like you I can see the justification. I’ll stick with my FujiFilm XT-3 and lenses and maybe upgrade to the XT-5, keeping the XT-3 for a backup. I’m sure you’ll love the Nikon.

I ditched my X-H2 for the Z8 about a year ago, and it was the best decision I could've made. I knew it had to do with the telephoto. My goto landscape lens in the GFX (came from the Canon 5D Mark IV) is the GF 100-200 F5.6. I agree; the 100-200mm fall short many times. I use the extender sometimes, and it's not bad, but still it can't compete with the full frame systems. All the best with the jump. I am going to stick around for a long time.

Nice talk and nice lens choices. I’ve been doing street and architecture for quite some time….using very simple primes, 28 35 50 sometimes 20 and 24. But now I shoot mostly birds so I got the Fuji 150-600 and Nikon 500mm and 300mm…..and later hopefully a 800mm too. Even 3 years ago the thought of long lens didn’t even cross my mind……but now I see every with a different eye.

I am thinking of adding the Sigma 21mm 1.4 and the Sigma 56mm 1.4 as well. My needs these days is light and fast, so the little Sony with a few primes and the one zoom works well for me. Very interesting. A long time film shooter and architect. So GFX was a god send. For landscape I use 20-35, 35-70 and EF canon 100-400 with Fringer adapter. The 100-400 is much sharper than (my copy) gf 100-200. It is 300 grams heavier. But focuses to 36 inches so is superb for quasi macro shots. Bc I do architecture GFX is the best option for shift lenses especially wide angle ones. Personally, I have always loved medium format. Pentax 67, Arca Swiss 69 view camera. FF is great but medium format has a certain magic. I guess the lesson is always use the right tool. For portraits the GF 110 cannot be beat. And the new 30mm TSE lens appears to be one of the best of its type ever. If they will only ship it!

I am going in the opposite direction! I have been shooting with an OM-1 and a Sony A7RV for a while now - happy with both, but I love the OM-1 - it makes photography easier. I just bought the GFX100S II and the 45-100mm lens because I wanted to explore MF and learn some new techniques. It has been a rough start - MF is harder to use (mostly because of the shallow DOF and the high resolution sensor which shows any camera shake or subject movement) - and I have to shoot at f8 or f11 most of the time. I grow orchids and use the OM-1 with in-camera focus stacking which is easy to use and works well. I have been trying the same with the new Fuji camera and have run into a lot of problems. I do think MF forces me to be more thoughtful in my photography - that's a good thing isn't it?

I follow you a lot and enjoy you photography, I have a nephew who uses Fuji and the colors are great because the sensor is not a Bayer. A camera is a camera and how it is used and the ease of use is the important thing. I went Sony A7s in 2014 and finally up to the A7RM5 today. I have to ask, because I do not know, But the A7RM5 has an a EV +/- 5 dial on top great for fall foliage getting cloud structure or say doing critters or birds on a sunny day to get hair/feathers cleanly and yes it has subject AF but for landscaping just over kill! There is a lens no one ever talks about but is in my every day carry bag the FE 24-240mm f3.5-6.3 OSS but in APS-C mode it is 36-360 (yes center of sensor cropped) but today with software you can enlarge also f/8 be there anyway. I have done Solar eclipse and hummingbirds to flying Egrets with sharpness to half an image cropping in focus and nesting babies being feed some 100 yards away on island in a lake. Like you there are like several 16-35mm f/4 to f/2.8, I find no difference and would use a f/4 for the longer SS you can have. For astro MW yes today you have the new 10mm f/2.8 or the 12-24mm f/2.8 just use the small 14mm f/1.8. The only thing you get with a say f/1.8 vs f/4 is a 1.8 requires a faster SS like 8s. The best advice for MW use the14mm or 16mm and do the panorama in portrait view so even MW arch in August where the top of it is way over head and beyond some getting a 200 degree panorama in less than 1 1/2 minutes doing 8 sec shots with NR is on moving with a stepper base to next spot while in NR mode. Even the 24mm f/1.4 could do it. The fast glass is not needed for that narrow FOV when you just use the little square for focus for you get FOV with great bokeh EVEN with the 24-240 even at 360mm. Most all this you never do but in the beginning my A7S was like night vison and using a 16-35mm f/4 captured the MW in a dark sky with city glow behind . With OSS lenses I could do anything in day light handheld. The king of sharpness even today is the A7RM2 where I did captures bracketed 3 at +/- 2ev hand held with the 12-24mm f/4 in antelope canyon when all others DSLR's in 2017 were on sticks even most today still on sticks in dim lighting. Today many Canon/Nikon users are having to sell their collection of lens with their cameras when they go mirrorless. All this just info just give it a look. A little secret lens is the super small OSS lens that is a APS-C is the E 10-18m (15-27mm) BUT will work in 12-18mm in Full Frame yes f/4 but a 25s capture with pin point stars in the corners, I still carry in a pocket of my sling bag just incase but ready!!!!!

Mark, yours are the best videos on photo experiences and techniques I’ve viewed. I applaud your dedication to a brand but your companion willingness to try others with an open mind. Good luck with the shift to Nikon. You said you had tried Sony for a short time, but you clearly abandoned the brand. I know that’s not an indictment of Sony, but can you explain why you didn’t want to stick with the Sony line?

I switched to z8 and a DF from the gfx100 and gfx100s for more versatility not for the telephoto so much because the Fuji 250 with teleconverter was fantastic and plenty of digital zoom. I moved to get wide and to shoot wildlife as well

Bravo. I keep thinking about making the jump to Nikon Z8 from my GFX 100S for all the reasons you say, but just can't do it. I have less of a need for the longer focal length; the GFX rough equivalent lens trinity + camera work out at only 340g more (no big shakes - they are both fairy heavy systems), and I am so used to the Fuji interface and button layout that it is well ingrained in my muscle memory.

Welcome back to Nikon (I think you already made up your mind lol) ✨️ I use the Z9 + Z8 with the unholy trinity: • Nikkor 16-35/4** (FTZii) • Z 35-150/2-2.8 • Z 100-400 (+ 1.4xTC) I really wish Nikon made a 16 or 15-35/2.8 -- like Sony E & Canon RF have -- I'm holding out hope we'll see that lens in the future. Not to add to your options, but you CAN use SONY E lenses on Nikon Z, which widens your options considerably! Also look into the Viltrox Z 16mm 1.8 lens for astro. It will be prime, but in DX mode you'll get a 24mm/1.8 -- while not a true "zoom", Like the 14-24/2.8, but it could replace that lens, if you want to get creative w/editing.

I´m keeping my 50s II and hold my breath for a 200-500 zoom, now that the 500 prime has just been released. But I also take a lot of landscape images with my Canon 100-400 II... ...when the birds are absent.

I can understand your thoughts very well. I also miss a telephoto zoom in the GFX system and I occasionally consider buying a Z8. Through my workshops I see a lot of different RAW files and whenever I compare myself with my RAW files from the GFX100s and, since Monday, the GFX100 II, I am very happy to own a GFX. I love the 4:3 format and the resolution quality of the GF lenses is simply in a different league. I occasionally use the Z9 with a friend's 14-24 and I always have to realize that the sharpness in the corners is not as perfect as on the Fuji. I might buy the upcoming R5 II (the specs are very interesting ;-) ), and use a 24-105 and the brilliant 100-500 on it. I definitely don't want to do without the GFX100 II. Greetings from Munich

I had both a GFX 100s and a Nikon Z7 after starting out with Nikon then getting tempted by MF. I loved the GFX files, but I didn’t love the camera nor the huge lenses. I need zooms for my work as I’m often in woods and can’t always just step backwards - positioning is hard and a zoom brings some latitude. I never liked the zoom ranges of the Fuji, they seemed not quite right, too short a range and either overlapping or gapping, I felt Fuji hadn’t really thought them out as a system. Not to mention how heavy they were. Have a lot of stuff in my bag as I take lighting out with me and man it was getting heavy! So I ended up selling up and getting a Z7II with the 24-120. Everything I need right there. And I print big - 130cm sometimes. With a bit of Gigapixel AI the 45mp files can go huge. Looking forward to a 60mp Z7III one of these days - with that extra 15/20 mps I’m sure I’ll put away my occasional thoughts of buying a GFX 100s again.

I'm a Sony shooter and own the Tamron 50-400 which is a great lens. Combined with a wide angle lens I can get away with using two lenses only for most situations. I appreciate the small form factor of my system, especially when hiking for multiple days. When I'm out in the wild for a copule of weeks I usually only bring my Sony camera and the Tamron 28-200, which gives me a ton of options while also keeping the weight and size down to a minimal level. I don't like switching lenses when in harsh environments far away from civilzation and that setup solves that issue. That being said, the other day I met a random person when I was out shooting birds. He was carrying a Z8 (which I had never seen irl before), and he asked me if I wanted to try it out. MAN that camera felt great in the hand! Such a pleasure to shoot with too. I've never tried Sony A1 out, but the price of that thing is just way too high and not giving me personally the value for money I'd get with the Z8. I love the lens options I get with E-mount but if I started new today I'd probably invest in Nikon. Z-mount has enough options for my kind of photography even if I'd miss my beloved Tamron 50-400.

Same here. 50-400mm with 16-35 is so versatile over three lens setup for landscapes as long as you shoot it on tripod. The 50-400mm is not perfect lens, in fact testing it test chart was a disappointment, but my comparison with two 100-400 lenses on actual landscapes (a lot of 60mp comparison samples on my website) shown that it is really good. I use 400mm in some landscapes a lot. 400mm also works for moon with landscape photography which is my favorite (I have an article in English and Czech on my web with advice how to plan it and photograph it).

@@fotovylety When I was researching the lens I found your comments on a forum (with a link to your website). Very informative and good comparisons. But I found it surprising that the lens didn't perform that well on your test chart, when others on KZread showed a solid performance. I haven't tested my lens on a test chart but I've done some quick comparisons with my 200-600, a lens I'm very pleased with, and I found the Tamron to be more equal than different to the Sony. Anyways, the 50-400 is the lens I use the most. Love it!

Love your enthusiasm, Mark! Very refreshing! I moved to Nikon full frame in 2013, the D800 and then D810,with the F mount lens holy trinity. Being older, I persuaded myself this gear would last me just fine until finally being unable to work in the field anymore. But some years later, I started feeling stale, in a creative rut -- very frustrating when you've in your September years. When the Z8 reached the market, it was a lifeline, hitting my photographic sweet spot smack in the middle. With the f/4 24-120 and the f/4-5.6 100-400, which as you say in the vid are simply wonderful, the Z8's image quality is fantastic. So many possibilities! I'm back to carrying a camera, looking for shots pretty much wherever, with several extended shooting trips planned. Never thought new gear could make quite this kind of difference, but guess I was wrong about that.
