@@antomcmanus1775 hi, what is confusing? A scale is a succession of notes. The mode is how this succession must be. Read the modes in C major, then it's enough to transpose. This is true for a lot of instruments.

What I do for learning modes is to focus on C major and then simply put this: it is playing Cmajor scale but shifting the root. As an example, consider Dminor,it is the second chord of CMajor ... we start to play over Cmajor scale but shifting the root to D... this is called D Dorian but in fact it is simply C major starting from D. From there you apply this to every chord of the C Major and then you cross all the modes. It is simplistic but at the end... this is what it is. Of course... the art is to make good music with that and that is another piece! This course is amazing.

What I like in yur way of teaching is that the exercises are funny and sound good. This make your course funny while being very good. This way of teaching opens to different ways to learn scales and phrasing. You are very creative and give me ideas on how to practice them differently on a guitar too.

I’m impressed with how “jazzy” these basic patterns sound in stepwise chord progression. The swing is the thing. It instantly enlivens that old warhorse, the diatonic scale, into something entertaining and fun. There’s more to it than just dotting the 8th notes. Something about the underlying subdivisions and syncopation that creates that “swing” that does mean a thing. Because it means everything in the style of jazz. Practicing playing 6 different intervals from the root note is one of those “why didn’t I think of that”. A simple and effective way to keep your muscle memory supple.

Dear Johny, thank you so much for these videos and your work! I discovered them earlier this week, and already feel so much more comfortable approaching the piano keys themselves. I've been trying to learn "Fall In" by Esperanza Spalding by memorising the notes - very, very slow and complicated. And today - voila! I actually looked at the chords in the score and all the intricacies suddenly made sense, to the point of almost playing by heart. It is your manner of speech, explaining and demonstrating, and the structure of your videos that make all that jazz seem possible and curious rather than threatening. Before I only knew how to put the septachords together. Now I am able to practically engage in playful exploration of music. Such a gift. 🎉
