3.73 Gear Ratio - 6.4L HEMI RAM 2500 Real World Review (I Mispoke its a 2500# difference not 1,000#)

#RAM #HeavyDuty #Superduty #HEMI #Hotshot #Non-Cdl
This is a review of this truck with a 3.73 Gear Ratio and its true capabilities as opposed to what many try to portrait. I mispoke on the towing pound difference but the points are still just as valid.

    Quality content. 3.73 are a potent trailering setup like you have. Gas engines do rev in Colorado but while it may be unnerving to someone like a diesel owner, but these gas engines can run for 100s of hours at 4K rpm with no issue. Ford SuperDutys come with 3.55 and 4.30 in the F250 and 3.73 and 4.30 in F350 but with a 10 speed trans. 7th is 1:1 and 3 overdrives. First is ridiculously low. If I may, personal skid steer story from last year. I rented one from a company and let him hook it up. Was his machine and trailer. It was well forward of the axles but had some room in the front. My F250 has 3061 payload and yellow SumoSprings. I pulled out on a major highway with my finder over the trailer emergency brake. I hit 50 and the trailer started swaying badly. Amazing how people get out of your way. Rode home at 40 but there was one downhill section that almost did me in. For about a 4 count I wasn’t sure how it was going to go with trailer brakes on 10 and me trying to break the switch. I had never towed a 10k skid steer and that’s all in me. When I took it back I loaded it about 1.5 feet further forward it and behaved as it should. Safe travels. Congrats on the land.

    Thank you my friend. This is helpful info on the Ford gear ratios. I'm glad everything turned out well with the skid steer towing experience. It sounds like it got dicey there for a little bit. I bet it had to be tough on the nerves. While skid steers may not have as big of a profile as travel trailers, they are not light and have a much smaller point that all that weight of it is concentrated on. It is definitely a great heads up as I move into shaping up the land. Thanks for adding value!

    You’re absolutely right man. 373s are a good option for towing. They just get a little bit better mpgs when not towing than the 410s. Sure if it has the 410s it would do better uphill but it’s still a bomb setup you have man.I’ve heard really nothing but good things from the new Chevy 6.6 gassers that only come with a 6-spd trans and 373s. There’s a guy I watch on here that uses ford 350/450 all day but he bought a GMC 6.6 gasser and said he was surprised how well it tows. And he was towing a skid steer aw well man. Keep up the good work and stay safe. But going off of your thought and all me and wife is the same way we do NOT need a diesel not with the maintenance costs and repair costs. And I don’t buy a truck to worry about fuel mileage, I’ve heard it said before, it the truck can’t do everything I need it to do then what good is it.

    Don’t feel bad bro. The 3.73-4.10 mpg is .5mpg. It isn’t that much of a difference. The 35” tires are what is killing your gas mileage. If you had 3.73’s it would be even worse because those gears work even harder to spin those heavy tires. Plus your truck will tow way better with 4.10. You made the right choice

    I would say think of it less of how much you can tow and try to think of it as more of how often your gonna tow…..4:10 gives you a greater mechanical advantage, which in turn really benefits your transmissions longevity specifically with heat and torque converter lock up if you are pulling “heavier” and or often (not so much max load)…..I have seen slightly better or the same economy with the 4:10 while towing, again depends on if your planning on towing frequently or are more of a weekend warrior but if your getting even the same mileage while towing your saving on the trans

    I have a 2014 ram slt with the 6.4 hemi and 3.73. With the six speed trans my tow rating is 12,100. My fifth wheel weighs 12,000. No problem on flat ground, but the mountains are a different story. I barely made it up some of the Colorado passes. It was a terrible experience and frankly it felt unsafe. Wish I had the new 8 speed transmission with the 4.10 gears rated to tow over 17,000 pounds!

  • @liveyourfree

    @liveyourfree

    2 жыл бұрын

    The new 8 speed transmission from what I hear makes a huge difference. I took mine with my 7500lb travel trailer through the CO passes and it made it. Slowly but it made it. I think the bigger issue going through those mountains is the elevation and lake of oxygen. I used to think the 4.10 gears would have made a huge difference but at that altitude I don't think it would. It would if you were starting from a dead stop but I was already in motion and in higher gears. For your situation, I would attribute it also to really having 12klbs on your back. That's a lot of weight!

  • @Yahusha77

    @Yahusha77

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@liveyourfree Yea it is a lot of weight. I’ve pulled much heavier, even 20,000 pounds without a problem, but that was on flat ground at lower elevation. You are definitely right about the lack of oxygen in the mountains. It makes a huge difference. Might need to look into a super charger that forces more air into the motor.

  • @xGR1MxREAPERx

    If your going to run heavy 35” tires get the 4.10 gears. It goes lower amounts better and the mpg is exactly the same when you have heavy 35” tires. 3.73 don’t get any better mileage and actually get worse sometimes with bigger tires.

    I have the 4:10 2500. The fuel economy is horrible and I hate the high rev in the engine compared to my 1500 3:92. I’ve already contacted my go to auto shop to do a gear swap for me and pricing. Just waiting on the estimate now. *Note * we haul on a regular basis 8-10000 lbs, our 1500 is the go to for this as the 2500 seems overkill. The truck is just geared way to low for our needs and mostly the 2500 is used as my construction work truck so a lot of highway traveling involved. I go the 2500 for the capabilities of lasting longer and handling off road sites better then the half tons, just not liking the low gear rev and horrible fuel economy.

    No. It's not a problem. And even 3.31 ratio in Durango is not a problem. Because you have more than enough ratios in ZF 8 speed. Just because you are using 5 and 6 with trailer makes no difference. On mountain climbs the transmission will deep to 4 or even 3 while the rpms are still around 4000, which is totally fine.. Your 7 and 8 are needed for going solo fast and efficiently, this is their purpose.
