Great video! I have a 21’ Ram 2500 Laramie with the 6.4 HEMI equipped with 4:10 gear ratio. I pull a Northwoods Nash 29S fully loaded with water and all my camping crap I’m pushing 12,000 pounds, I live in Northern Nevada at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains so I’m constantly going up and down steep grades and the truck performs great. All my camping friends all have diesel engines and pulling roughly the same weight all of our MPG’s are really close, 7-12 MPG. I’m not bashing diesel’s, they are great, in my case my truck is my daily driver and I live 3 miles from work and I couldn’t justify buying a diesel as my truck is 3 years old and it has just under 12,000 miles.

Great video on the capability of this truck. I have the same truck and about to go from a 7k to 11k camper. It’s an identical floor plan to yours except in the Salem line. Your video really proves I’ll have no issues with the upgrade. Thanks for taking the time to post this video.
Love your view and input, great feedback. Watched your video on the 3/4 and have to ask what made you move from the 1/2 ton to the 3/4 ton? You mention that the only reason you would go to the 3/4 ton was payload, nothing else? i was surprised to see that you mentioned the 5.7 hemi did a better job going up hills than the 6.4 hemi and the 6.4 hemi was poorer gas milage, Much difference?

Do you store yours at your residency or elsewhere? I bought a 2024 model today and unfortunately live in an HOA neighborhood with not much space. My step 2 is finding a home for it that's secure and affordable.

Brilliant! I recommend that people look at the payload sticker on the driver-side door sill to see what a specific truck can handle, especially if you're shopping around. My 2016 1500 RAM w/3.0 diesel, Crew Cab 4x4 Laramie Long Horn Limited w/6.5 bed had a payload sticker rating of 895 lbs. I traded for a 2019 2500 Bighorn 4x4 Crew Cab w/Cummins 6.7 with a payload sticker of 2300 lbs. That suited my need for my 1750lb dry weight slide in camper.
Just gotta plan your entry and exit points before going into a Gas station. Same with driving a tractor trailer. Plan ypur arrival and departure.
Started my 2500 journey today, we picked up our 2024 Ram 2500 Bighorn with the 6.4 Hemi. We will be pulling our approximately 6500 # travel trailer with it. The ride home was a little over 100 miles, mostly interstate and we averaged about 16 miles per gallon running 70 on the highway. Truck is amazing we are looking forward to the increased capabilities versus the half ton we traded in. Love your videos, keep em coming!

the 13 grand extra u spend on a diesel is considering u paid cash for it, wrong tons of ppl pay 6 some odd % on that extra money for the diesel.
i just bought a ram 2500 6-1-2014 for 46 grand 6-4 hemi. all other dealers had diesels for over 84 grand otd yeah no
Great job. Great valid points. Owned 8 diesels. Switched to gmc gas. I love it so far. Really surprised in the torque it has. Only pulling 28k so I couldn't see the added expenses.
Also keep a buffer of 20% of your max weight rating as a reserve for safety - Cause being Over confident will get you into trouble - And I've seen it when it happens to others...
One added fact here too is make sure you have good tires on your trailer. Don't just have the bare minimums - go to the next grade level. trust me I have been there and towing a 1988 29ft unit that's close to 7000 lbs dry - you cant tow this with grade C tires the next grade up makes a whole lot of difference in handling and spares you from blow outs .
A couple of things you missed - 1 Anti-sway hard ware MUST be used on trailers over or in excise of 26 ft. 2 - Know where your Trailer brake controller is and that its easy to activate if needed for added braking to help in emergency stopping. 3 -If your towing vehicle is equipped with a Tow Haul feature Make sure you use it as it will save your transmission 4 - Make sure your tow vehicle is equipped with the appropriate hardware { external Tranny cooler in line with the stock one in your radiator, And Engine oil Cooler as these will help dissipate the excessive heat .

Thats better than my 2020 1500 Ram 5.7 Hemi with 3.21 Axles , i get 21.7 miles per gallon not pulling or hauling .

I bought a newer Silverado 6.6 gas, use it for heavier tows but won be giving up my 2019 F150 2.7 that averages 23mpg. Since I prefer trucks this is best of both worlds for me.

I used to have a gas truck switched to diesel for towing and would never go back to gas for the way I work my truck. If you use you truck for groceries occasional towing and mall crawling gas is fine but if you need a work horse diesel is the way to go. To each there own. By the way how many 18 wheelers do you see sporting a gas motor anymore?

I'm sure when truck prices level off, there will be a new crop of buyers who might not need a 3/4 ton but don't want a 6 cylinder turbo in a half ton. And a 3/4 ton gasser might seem like a better option.

I appreciate the great advice what I plan on doing. I have a 28 footer with a half ton. I need to go up to a three-quarter ton. My plans are to go somewhere for extended periods of time 34 times a year until I retire I want to be on the road a lot. What do you think gas or diesel?
Thanks for this video! I tow a 10K Reflection travel trailer very similar to yours with our RAM 2500 6.4 with 3.73 gears (2015). Never very happy with how it handles steeper grades so glad to see the newer models do well. Even the Ike Gauntlet guys noticed this issue/lack of power in their towing tests with the 2014 year. Kinda' stumped as to what I can do to improve the performance... Feel like going up to 4.10s would help but pretty expensive and I'm not convinced it would make a huge difference.

skip the 3/4 ton and go with a one ton LB 3500 with the Cummins and Asien tranny with 3.73 rear end. If you go with a Bighorn you can get the cross path detection and it will sence other vehicles in your blind spots.

Awesome videos Im looking at upgrading my 2020 GMC sierra 1500 X31. Looking at a 2018 Ram 2500 Hemi with 30000 miles your opinion would be great. Currently towing a travel trailer 32' 7600 lbs loaded.
Gas trucks have more payload.
Sadly when you go past 27ft TT and add your TV most gas stations can be a pain to fill up. But with a diesel you get to fill up in the diesel section with the big rigs and with that discount fuel card on diesel that’s more of a saving. Now at some point back a year or more Diesel fuel $ was not allowing you to break even.. But today we’re back to diesel being lower in price then premium gas. My down time is camping and going places and want my towing and fueling to be as comfortable as possible. I appreciate the tow experience of the turbo on the climbs. Now my TT is only 26.1 ft Grand Design; And I tow with a half ton 2.7 turbo. Love the tow experience, better my V8 from the past. Was never so smooth or worse mpg’s. Sadly they don’t make a 3/4 ton in a Gas turbo “ Why” ? Even as you drive and tow I can hear your rig dropping gears to get the torque it needs to get over small climbs.. where a turbo wouldn’t fuss over simple climbs. Oh and I’m loving the 10 speed transmission. I have towed with every truck out there due to my company. For me Turbo is king and if I leave the 1/2 ton to 3/4 it would need to be diesel due to the Turbo & 10 speed and that would be Chevy, GMC or Ford. RAM is still stuck dates on 8 speed trans.
Most truck owners these days don't even use them as a utility...its become a fad...much less a 2500..which most don't even "need"....
In my opinion the only way to go in the 2500 is the Hemi and not the Diesel, even for towing because of the better payload capacity. You will exceed your payload with the diesel way before you reach its max tow abilities. The payload is like 800 pounds better in the Hemi 6.4 liter over the diesel. (That means dry hitch can be 800 pounds heavier than the diesel with same passengers and gear loaded.) One more thing: Be sure to get the 4.10 gear! If you love a diesel and have the need then just go for the RAM 3500 as that has a much higher payload and can take advantage of the max towing capacity.
Not sure if you still watch these this far back but I am curious if your hitch setup does both WD and Sway control?
I’m looking into gas trucks because I just want to tow my jeeps a few times a year on some longer trips I don’t need a diesel to tow 5 times a year diesel engines last longer but does the body and interior not without a lot of upkeeping it clean rust is a thing
Run a fleet of F-450 SRW chassis-cab gas trucks with utility boxes and tow regularly; gas is hard to beat with the ease of operation. Used to run diesels and they’re more work, more weight, and more maintenance but at least diesel was cheaper than gasoline back then, so the increased costs were offset long-term. Diesel today is much different with the need for def and the cost increase in fuel as mileage doesn’t get good enough to offset the cost; diesels are a losing prospect outside of class 6-8 vehicles. Absolutely do what you want and need but the old “you need a diesel” for … is no longer true, especially with the strides being made in gas engines. Frankly I’d rather see hybrids in the bigger truck space as that seems like it could be the best of both worlds.
The epa will love your video. As diesel goes, so does our country. Ice engines next, then all carbon. Humans are carbon based units. Do the math. Your video is truth but sad. The elites stack the deck against diesel and life. I almost bought another diesel to rage against this destruction of business but in addition to the unfortunate truths you state there are other issues sabotaging diesel. If you have a diesel enjoy it with your last few breaths of freedom. Def is death to a diesel engine. There are new diesel trucks made without all the epa crap the consumer gets. These are supplied to various government departments and if the consumer could get them you would not have made this video. Everything in your home and even the materials it's made of got there on a diesel truck.
