This is kind of off topic, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I stumbled across your KZread channel because I like older Toyotas. After watching for awhile, I started noticing things that looked very familiar. Your garage/ shop/ house is the house I grew up in. I lived there from 1962 to 1987. My dad sold it in the early 90's. I have a lot of old memories of working on 70's Mopars in that same driveway you use to shoot your videos. Anyway, thanks for the Toyota content. Very informative.

Thanks Gary. Good to hear you've found the series entertaining. It was a pretty difficult project, mostly because of the time constraints we were under. It would have been more enjoyable if we could have tackled something like this at a leisurely pace. Brendon and I wrenched on it sun up till sun down for 5 days. Sean was involved with it for 3 days. Our buddy Thanh helped for a couple days. Brendon and I put in a 6th day where we trailer his rig to Modesto to get the custom exhaust work done. You'll get to see that footage in the final part, Part 4, probably the 1st week of February. We had a delay in getting the 4 of us back together to finish up some footage and record the final closing shot. So, you'll have some more entertainment coming you way. Thanks for the comment Gary. We appreciate it!

Thanks. It was a long 5 days of wrenching. To say the least, I was stoked we got the engine running. There were some hiccups for sure but we succeeded.

This might be something to do for my 1990 4x4. Nice work!

Yeah, good luck with the swap if you go for it.

With leaving the transmission and transfer case bolted to the cross member, it definitely is a matter of preference. I always remove them both and install them as a unit. If you get the transmission jack positioned so the most weight is supported you'll have an easier time. Plus with the engine one the mounts it can angle down, also making life easier. For chalks for engine hoists I usually grab a screwdriver or a pry bar. Been waiting for the last video, and you folks didn't disappoint. Congratulations and job well done.

Pulling the engine with the transmission and transfer case attached to the engine seems pretty awkward but I've never tried it. I do like marrying the trans (by itself) to the engine rather than the engine to the trans but pulling the trans and transfer case is more work. Using a trans jack for a transmission and transfer case combo sucks. The weight isn't balanced and it renders the trans jack fairly useless. Thanks for the comment. The final part, Part 4, will be coming out in a few weeks. We were suppose to get together this week to finalize Part 4 but Brendon couldn't make it down because of work so now we're going to try to get together late this month and hopefully be able to finish it. There's just a few things we want to capture to make the video series more complete.

I'd pull the entire power train all together, but for me I'd need an overhead hoist. To even get the engine in and out of the engine bay is hard enough with a 4" suspension lift plus a body lift. One of these days I'll have a shop with as many goodies as I can get ahold of to make all my future upgrades easier.

Love the series, currently working on this swap in my 93 4runner. I did notice that you attached the ORS clutch slave cylinder bracket to the body of the truck. I know how you mentioned it wouldn't work with the headers but is designed so the rubber hose flexes when the engine moves. The way you have to your relying on the metal line to flex, which im afraid will break over time. Just something to think about

You mentioned the same thing the guys at ORS brought to out attention. Brendon is going to have to correct that and affix the bracket to the engine instead. Hopefully we'll be able to show how to properly affix it in Part 4.

Yeah, I've got a '93 3.0-L that just gave up the ghost, and I really do think I'd like to go to the 3.4. I wouldn't drive it any harder than I drove the 3.0. It just wouldn't have to work as hard, and I could get around people quicker, when I had to. As you said, below, I'm in a situation where I can get it done a little at a time, and I've got the room to leave it partway done for weeks or months, as I peck away at it. In that situation, it's a project worth doing, possession being 9/10 of the law, and the truck being in my possession.

Thinking about doing this since my water pump just went out. I also have a burnt exhaust valve that has done something to the piston. This 4runner is my first car i really don't want this stress right now lol. I JUST started my job so i don't have money to dump into the failing 3.0. But saving for a 3.4 or another 3.0 is gonna be hard too. Idk what to do anymore lol i just replaced the clutch last week 🙃

If you have the ability to just let it sit while you save up money for the engine swap, that's what I would suggest. If you were relying on your 2nd Gen for transportation, maybe you can find an affordable used economical commuter you can purchase.

@@TimmyTheToolman i want to ask in hopes that you will answer. Because i cant find a straight answer. Can a seized bearing on the rad fan stall the engine? Earlier it would sound like a dying monkey and then stall. Upon inspection i notice the bearing on the fan bracket is COVERED in those oh so delightful metal flakes and it is extremely hard to turn and hangs. Tomorrow i will remove the belt and see if it stops but i currently cant feel my toes so im calling it a night

I really appreciate it man, i know you aren't our personal mechanic but sometimes it's nice to be able to ask someone that actually has a decent amount of hands on experience with the engine. Nice, this video! I have been watching a lot of your 5VZ-FE videos, over the last year and they have been a big help with my truck. This video gave me flash backs of two weeks ago when my father and I spent about 5 hours trying to get my 5VZ-FE back into my 2000 Tacoma. I have spent almost four months overhauling my engine, so it was a lot of stressful, "raise the engine", "how does it look on that side", "jack up the transmission a little", "rotate the engine to the drivers side", "try wiggling it"... and so on. I also ended up using a ratchet strap on the boom of the hoist to raise the front of the engine, so it was nice to see that it was not that uncommon an idea. However, once I got a few of the bell housing bolts to thread into the engine, it just came together easy. I fired up the engine the first time yesterday and it sounded great. It was a big relief. I only have a few issues that I ran into after getting it started. First is a small coolant leak around the thermostat housing neck, I may need to replace it as I used the old one and it looked pretty rough around the mating surfaces. And the second is the engine is idling high (around 2000 rpm), I feel that has something to do with the IAC. I also only cleaned, and did not replace the IAC during the overhaul. Anyway keep up the great videos, they have been a great resource.

Thanks for the comment. Hope you get your high idle figure out. Take a close look at how well the throttle body baffle is closing. Also look for vacuum leaks. Glad our videos are helping you out.

@@TimmyTheToolman I doubt it is a vacuum leak as I replaced all of the vacuum lines during the overhaul, except for the little hoses on the evap system. However, I will take a look at the throttle body baffle. I hope it turn out to be something simple and not overly expensive to fix. Thanks.

@@TimmyTheToolman Update: Got the high idle issue solved. I found that the engine idle would settle down if I just unplugged the IAC, and after replacing it the engine idle has been fine. During the overhaul I tried to be careful of the IAC when I cleaned it, but I guess I damaged the electronics and it always wanted to be open. Also the coolant leak issue I had just went away after a few thermal cycles, so I guess that is a good thing. However, now I have a check engine light on, that when I put a computer on it to read the code it says that I have a faulty catalytic converter, which If I remember correctly might have been a preexisting issue before the overhaul. (sigh) It is always just one more thing... Thanks for your advice.

I noticed in the first video you talked a little about where to attach the chains to pull the 3.0. Maybe I missed it (since I was watching this video while I was supposedly working), but how did you attach the chains to the 3.4? I've seen a few different things online, and none of them seem very concise. Apparently there's a bracket on one side but you have to either buy a part for the other side or pull a bracket from the 3.0 and modify it to work on the 3.4?

There is a special bracket you can buy from Toyota for that passenger side, and I had it for this job, but found out it would bolt up correctly. We ended up using another Air Chamber Stay (lift bracket on the driver side) that we got off a wrecked rig at a PicknPull. We bolted it to the passenger head. We purposely didn't choose one of thr bolts hole at the very front of the head fearing the aluminum could crack or break off from the weight. We chose a bolt hole 2nd in from the end of the head to where more metal would be supporting the load. It ends up only being supported by one bolt, but as long as the bolt is a Grade 8 or higher, there should be no fear it will shear off.

Swapping bodies isn't hard provided you have a hydraulic lift that can easily lift the body off the chassis. Without a professional hydraulic vehicle lift, it would be pretty hard. Ideally, you would have two lifts, one for each vehicle. You're better off finding a 4wd Tacoma to swap over to.

The 3.0 already has two brackets attached to the head to pull the motor. For the 3.4, we added the same bracket you find on the driver side of the engine to the passenger side head. You can only attach it with one bolt but it's strong enough to support the engine so you can remove it and install it. We grabbed the bracket off a wrecked vehicle at a PicknPull yard.

I timmy my quetion is how do you do the smog this car ? After swap .

You have to take it to a smog referee. Places like the People's Republic of California, that have very strict smog laws, will probably be the biggest pain in the ass to get smogged, but even in California, this engine swap should pass. As long as all the emissions parts are present, like the Evap Canister, O2 Sensors, and correct Catalytic Converter(s), it should pass a smog referee inspection.

Awesome video! I did this swap years ago with the ORS parts, definitely worth the money. My vehicle is one of the rare ones that didn’t need any hood/body mods. I basically just closed the hood! (It’s a 1995 SR5.) I was under the impression if you use a 4X2 computer the 4WD wouldn’t work, was that the case for you?

Brendon got a 4x4 ECU from ORS. I think it came from a Tacoma if I'm remembering correctly. Yeah, with a 2wd ECU, you wouldn't be able to use the ADD 4wd system. Glad you like the video. We appreciate you taking the time to comment. Happy Wrenching!

I think that load leveler makes it harder to manipulate the engine. I had a much easier time and I did it by myself

He hasn't gotten it smogged yet. He lives in Nevads by the way, not California. He's actually having an issue with the catalyst monitor showing ready. He maybe just hasn't completed the necessary drive cycle yet.

There's a slight delay because we tried to get Brendon back down to my place earlier this month to capture some final footage but Brendon at the last minute got a mandatory overtime shift at work and couldn't make it. We're going to hopefully get together at the end of this month and be able to get Part 4 out the first week of February.
