3.0L V6 3VZ-E to 3.4L V6 5VZ-FE Engine Swap (2nd Gen 4Runner) - Part 4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this 4 part video series, we are going to walk you through all the steps necessary to remove the stock 3.0 Liter 3VZ-E V6 engine out of your 2nd Gen 4runner and replace it with a 3.4 Liter 5VZ-FE V6 engine.
In part 4, we show the custom muffler work, cutting the hole in the hood for the scoop, getting the tachometer and cruise control working, and also show a few other little things we buttoned up.
We don't show you every last detail, especially when it comes to pulling a 3.4 liter engine from a used or wrecked vehicle, stripping an old 3.4 liter engine and building up a rebuilt 3.4 liter engine because we already have a video series that covers that.
Here's a link to that 4 part engine swap series: • Toyota 3.4 Liter 5VZ-F...

    This was an awesome learning experience. Highly recommend this conversion. As Tim mentioned, there are a ton of options. I did not choose the most cost conscious options, but I’m very happy with where and what I spent money on. ORS definitely minimized down time, and I’m very happy with the quality of their products. That option might not be for everyone, but Mike and Derek are awesome guys, their customer service is bar none, they have a wealth of knowledge they are willing to share, and their products are great quality. Thanks again to Tim and Sean for always bringing us great content! Couldn’t do it without them!

    Thanks Brendon. It was a good overall experience. I was feeling the stress to complete this job in the time we had so I wasn't the easiest person to be around at times. I hate to fail so I was putting a lot of pressure on myself and everyone around me to stay focused and get the job done. We definitely as a team kicked ass and got it done. It was a huge accomplishment for everyone involved and the icing on the cake was making some new industry connections, like ORS and Mitchell Muffler and also making a new friend. I look forward to joining you on some 4wheeling and other adventures in the Sierras. Thanks for trusting Sean and I with this project.

I have zero issues passing, even going over the summit at 80 mph. I'm averaging 19-20 mpg. Highway I'm around 22. I'm running a cold air intake and those custom headers from ORS which also play a factor in performance. I 100% recommend the swap for ease and performance increase.

    Another option not mentioned for the cruise control is finding the actuator off of a 22re powered 4runner or pickup with factory cruise. 90-93 Bolts right up and the cable is long enough with the correct end to fit the 3.4 throttle body. They are however very rare. I was lucky and found one. The toy only swap battery tray with the evap mount is the way to go, looks oem and doesn't interfere with cruise actuator.

    From what I have heard is if you use the 3.0l engine mount brackets and isolators you should have engine to hood clearance. The 3.4 vs the 3.0 motor mount brackets are about a half inch longer resulting in the engine sitting higher. Which could mean the difference in cutting the hood or not. On the engine mount on the frame for you 22re folks and some 3.0's you could look into Advanced adapters for a motor mount relocation kit which moves the engine forward. Or make your own, just remember that the engine and transmission has to be at a slight angle down to allow proper oil flow back to the oil pan. Special note about the cross over pipe. There is a reason the factory uses a 1 7/8 diameter pipe for a reason, and goin bigger may cause run ability issues for the 3.4l for the lack of backpressure. Plus some states in the future may flag you on inspection when the time comes for IM testing. Toy only swaps will convert your crossover pipe from passenger side to driver side drop for the fraction of the price of an ORS system. If you do this conversion and get the original 3.4 injector harness (actual name) or engine harness you will not have to make any special brackets or clips to hold the harness to the timing cove at the front of the oil pan. if you have the injector harness made by ORS then you will have to figure this part out as you go. Nice job on the cruise control unit. Just wondering The 3.4 has the cruise control unit mounted on the passenger side, why not mount the 3.0 unit on the passenger side and keep the original cable length? All you would have to do is just run extra wire to your original 3.0 cab/ body harness over to the passenger side fender. For anyone who doesn't want to buy a separate battery tray just get one out of a Toyota pickup or 4nunner with a drivers side battery tray. Place it on your fender well should fit in one ish spot because it is pre bent and mad to fit the fender. Spot weld it, shoot some paint and reuse you passenger side hardware.

    That’s all good info sheep dog. Toys only swap also makes a lot of good products. I considered them as an option if I was having a shop do this swap. They do great work. I kept the cruise control in its stock location because I didn’t want to figure out a new bracket. We did run wiring to relocate…and I may in the future, but this was a simpler solution.

  • @TimmyTheToolman

    @TimmyTheToolman

    We did use the 3.0 engine mount brackets and engine mounts for this job and you got what you saw in the video. The hood needed to be cut for the hood to close. We're not great fabricators so the choice to make our own mounts wasn't going to be a way to go for us. We never measured the crossover pipe diameter but I'm sure the spec ORS built it to is sufficient for the 3.4 liter engine. Well, at least it appears so because Brendon's engine runs great with zero issues. I think his rig would pass smog no problem, but any serious smog nazi states like California might give him a little grief with those headers. If it wasn't for the headers, I doubt a smog referee would have any issues with this swap. That's good to know the the Toy Only Swaps is able to alter the OEM crossover pipe for people. So, with the cost of their work and the shipping of the pipe to and from, it's still a savings over the ORS custom crossover pipe? How much do they charge for this service? Yeah, it makes sense for someone altering the original harness with the original plastic wiring harness protectors would offer the person to be able to mount it at the front of the oil pan with the stock bracket. You must have missed Part 3 but I extended the cruise control wires so Brendon could mount the cruise control unit on the passenger side. That was the original plan but Brendon called an audible and decided to keep the cruise control unit in the stock location on the driver side. Brendon did a good job making it work with the bicycle cable, housing and cable end. I have no experience with the Toy Only Swaps company so I don't know how they compare to ORS. What I can say without a doubt is Derek and Mike at ORS were extremely helpful with the swap. I wonder if Toys Only Swaps has the same level of customer service as ORS. There's obviously many ways a person can do this job. This was just our representation on how to do it. What I do know without a doubt is nobody, and I mean NOBODY is going to document this job like we did. It was 6 days of work with god knows how many hours of editing. We know the information we shared in this series is going to help out a whole lot of people complete their own 3.0 to 3,4 Swap on their 2nd Gen 4runner. Thanks for the comment and the information you shared. Happy Wrenching!

    Maybe using the 3.0 engine brackets to get hood clearance only applies to the 4cyl rigs. Doing a 1/2-1" body lift would be also an option. The crossover conversion by Toy Only Swaps is $175 plus shipping there and back again.roughly $225-$275, or for folks that want to try it on there own it's only labor it is due able. I did see a video were someone did the 3.4 conversion made the own crossover using larger diameter pipe and either had starting or had run ability issues. Couldn't remember which but does make sense, but the choice of cat and muffler can change that and make up the difference if on is lacking back pressure. I agree cutos on the work with the cruise control. If I had and wanted to retain cruise I would have ran the 3.0 unit because it was vacuum operated. I was just thinking that the EVAP is such a bulky item and there is plenty on the passenger side. Kinda surprised now on has come up with a mirrored bracket for the 3.0 to 3.4 conversion with wanting to retain the 3.0 cruise control. I'd make/market something like that but I have now we're near that kind of money to get something like that of the ground. I thought Cali required that doing a conversion of this sort you have to take everything stock from the donor rig and installing it on the recipient vehicle. That's at least what I got from some videos I've seen, one impractical was a 4runner.

    Hey Tim. You’re really good at what you do. What do you think is stopping a 2000 4runner from going into over drive? It’s a automatic. 3 serious mechanics can not find why. Everything runs amazing, does manual shift into 4th gear when transmission technician had it, they really did their best after so many weeks they had it searching in so many places. The computer just doesn’t want to command over drive on its own. Something is snagged before it gets to the computer. I Changed the ecu for another, bypassed the immobilizer because it’s a limited edition, very annoying process, coolant temperature reads fine, transmission temp reads fine, I changed the thermostat, it’s closing and opening just fine, the over drive switch is engaging on the shift lever. Vehicle knows what gear it is in and what speed it is going. Transmission is very nice with shifting, no weirdness, I don’t have any modifications what so ever, no lift. Previous owner had remote start installed.. that’s all we could find after market, no weird tinkering from other people on the vehicle. When I scan the computer it doesn’t throw any codes. I would do anything for this truck it’s amazing in every way. Do you have any suggestions or have you seen anything like this? Or lead me in some direction that could help? That 4th gear would really tie this truck together. It has a 150k only:/

    I've never done a swap with a JDM engine, but I do know several parts need to be swapped over from the U.S. 3.4 liter to the JDM 3.4 liter to make it work. Honestly, the process would be much more straightforward for you if you just obtained an engine domestically than from Japan. If you're going to stick with the JDM engine, I'd contact ORS and see what they say you'll need to exchange off the JDM engine and get from a domestic engine. If you watched Part 1 of this series, you know you need other things as well from a donor domestic 3.4 liter vehicle like the MAF sensor, igniter, EVAP canister, throttle body, power steering pump, etc. Good luck.
