3.0 Who was General-at-Sea ('Admiral') Robert Blake?
A preface to this next batch of videos on Bridgwater and the Sea: a brief introduction to Robert Blake, his connection to Bridgwater and a discussion of his legacy.
Some of the prompting behind this video comes from the current statue debate - see here for a discussion of the Bridgwater statue, and keep an eye on the Westover website for any updates: www.westoverward.co.uk/blake-...
To learn more about Blake, the best all-round biography is probably: Michael Baumber, General-at-Sea: Robert Blake and the Seventeenth Century Revolution in Naval Warfare (Murray, 1989)
For a excellent short introduction, see: David Sebborn, Robert Blake: General at Sea, Founding Father of the British Navy (Blake Musuem 2005).
For an introduction with Blake's own letters see: David Sebborn, Your Faithful Servant: Insights into the Life of the Cromwellian Navy from the letters, despatches and orders of Robert Blake, General at Sea (2000).
For a more comprehensive collection of Blake's letters see J.R. Powell, The Letters of Robert Blake (1937)
Finally, for the Victorian view of Blake see:
William Hepworth Dixon, Robert Blake: Admiral and General at Sea, Based on Family and State Papers (1852)
This last one is probably best read as almost akin to well-informed historical fiction - it's a lively read and based on evidence, but does stray somewhat.

I’m glad I know more about my ancestors
thank you, I grew up in Bridgwater, 1/2 my family is buried at Wembdon and I went to Sunday school here - just back from a visit to the museum - very informative
Great little animations and pictures! Very interesting and clear!
Thank you for sharing. Blake is my ancestor and this video was very informative.
I am happy to say that I am related to this fine gentleman. I will be returning to the university of Oxford in September as he once did at Wadham College
Wow ive always been told he pointed to his house / the museum. Crazy how folklore can mix with stuff like this
Excellent video Miles, that said Blake was one of my boyhood heroes but I did not know that he came from Bridgwater

How wonderful! It seems so few people know who he is nowadays, it's always a surprise when folk outside of the town have heard of him.
His brother was one of my grandparents.
He is second only to Nelson in British naval history. What he started, Nelson (and Collingwood) concluded.

I think Blake is seriously underrated, but what about Cochrane? He did great for Britain and for Latin America.

Even that though, aren't I right in saying Nelson said he could never be compared to Blake? Or is that just folklore
What’s up miles

Hi Ben!
Did he help loose the files? Or was that just a distraction 👀
