2.2 The Paupers' Burial Ground (& Josaphine Clofullia)

*Correction: at 5.06 the first burial was John Briffett, not Biffen.*
In this video we explore the workings of the Paupers' Burial Ground within the Wembdon Road Cemetery and a little about the scope of the Bridgwater Union Workhouse.

How interesting to hear the story of Josaphine Clofullia, and about how many others were buried in the Paupers' Burial Ground.

Thank you for this informative video. My GGG-grandfather William Crocker, was buried here 12Apr1889. He died in the Union workhouse along with his young daughter Emma (d.Apr1885)

Another interesting talk. Thank you. A 2 x Gt. Grandmother of mine, Izet Prole (Isett), died in the workhouse on the 21st. July 1880 and was taken by friends. I have found a record of her being in the burial register of St. Mary’s on the 23rd July 1880, but I was under the impression that the burials there ended in the 1850’s, so where could she actually be? Any ideas? I believe she was in there due to being an alcoholic after the deaths of a number of young children including one being burnt to death. I have found numerous letters going between the Union Guardians and her husband, Robert Prole. They were chasing him for payment but he had given the money to Master Mariner Charles Wills of Fryern Street who obviously kept the money as it wasn’t being paid to the workhouse Guardians.
