    As a mechanic, you won't get indicator lights for the hubs engage or disengageing. It's gonna be for the transfercase engagement. I'd check that manual linkage for the 4wd lever to transfer case to make sure it's actually fully engaging or disengageing as it sounds like it's not fully traveling or actuaiting allowing the gears to grind when half way point. These linkages can slip if cable or threads cam move if jamb nut becomes loose ,or cable stretching. Just something I'd be looking at.

    I can't remember exactly, since his van is a 4x4 conversion, but I know GM used diff actuators in the gmt-400, 800, 900, and some newer trucks. Not exactly sure if his van has it but they are definitely a headache. When they don't engage properly, in 4hi or 4lo, the front right axle doesn't engage. So, no 4wd. I've experienced this in an older Silverado I had but didn't have any grinder sounds. The grinding sounds more like a transfer case issue, like mentioned above.

    @@GeekyDad84 On these 4x4 Van conversions they generally use manually shifted transfer cases. There is still an axle disconnect system on the front differential but that does not sound like the issue. I agree with @posersk8er183 , it sounds like a linkage issue. Possibly a broken shift fork inside transfer case.

    This may be long winded. Your front axle should have a ‘front axle disconnect’ (not sure of the year of vehicle your front axle came off of). When you pull the transfer case shifter into 4WD the transfer case spins up the front driveshaft to match the rear driveshaft speed, then the ‘front axle disconnect’ engages and connects your 2 front axles (left and right) together. And now 4WD works. The Front axle disconnect works by separating one of the front axles with a splined collar, usually passenger side. When in 2WD the front axle and differential stop spinning, but your axles keep spinning with the front tires. By separating the front axles with the disconnect, the fixed axle spins the stub axle inside the front diff case in the opposite direction. What you are hearing is the front axle disconnect failing and trying to lock the front axles together while the stub axle and wheel axle are Turing in opposite directions. So could be actuator failing or wiring going to actuator failing. I’d start with replacing the actuator. And be careful buying cheap knock off ones. They fail fast.

  • @sw5334

    @sw5334

    2 ай бұрын

    If you look on the passenger side of your front differential you should see a wiring harness going to a solenoid looking thing. That should be the front axle disconnect.

    For your own backpacking meals, you can buy freeze-dried ingredients and then package them yourself (you can buy the mylar bags too and seal them with an iron). It works out to be about half the price of the pre-made ones and you get to put in exactly what you want.

    These 4x4 conversions usually use as many OEM parts as possible, basically using components from a GM pickup. They generally use manually shifted transfer cases as they are much easier to adapt into a vehicle that was never 4x4 from the factory. GM uses an axle disconnect on the passenger side axle shaft. With an open differential by simply disconnecting one axle only the differential gears spin going down the road, but the ring and pinion gears stay stationary along with the front driveshaft.

    Holy moly, I want a burrito so badly now! That is not what I was expecting from a Foresty Forest video, but it's better than the heebie jeebies I get from acrophobia by proxy.

    There's nothing better than that chewy, steamy tortilla.. 😋 I love the pan toast of the burrito as well. I used to cut it in half, place in shallow plate, a few tortilla chips dripped with water alongside, add [my pref hanañero] the hottest salsa from this Mexican market all over, nuke for a minute or two. Omgaaahhhhd, talk about a scrumptious stretched out meal. Mind you, the burro was well loaded in the first place, so easy to portion into two decadent parcels of pure joy. I'm wayyyyyy overdue. Sigh. Cheers to delicious food. ❤❤❤

    You might have a faulty Mode Switch or Mode Switch Connector (located on transfer case). I drove our stock 2wd Chevy Express van out to Quigley’s assembly plant in Pennsylvania and had them install the 4x4 drivetrain conversion. About 20k miles since, with a lot of overland off-roading, I can vouch that It is an amazingly solid and capable 4x4 drivetrain. The Quigley people were top notch, very professional, friendly and helpful. I’m sure if you contacted them with the VIN # from your van they would send you the ‘Parts List & Maintenance Schedule’ for your drivetrain, which would be helpful for your mechanic. From viewing your channel I can see that you are using the Quigley van for exactly what it was designed for - very harsh conditions (mud, sand, snow, ice, stream crossings, extreme temperatures, etc.). Under those conditions, sooner or later there’s going to be mechanical issues, with any make/brand 4x4. However, you can delay the inevitable with more frequent maintenance. The Maintenance Schedule that came with our Quigley 4x4 conversion states: “When hubs & axels are submerged in water, maintenance schedules should be performed A.S.A.P. For severe use (a.k.a. towing, mud, excessive dust, etc. maintenance schedules should be performed more frequently).” Personally, I check the oil level and condition in both differentials and transfer case, plus lubricate all ball joints, steering linkages and u-joints at every 5k oil change. In very dusty conditions I’ll blow out the engine air filter with compressed air as soon as we get back home. The water crossings can be most severe on your drivetrain. Many off-roading experts advise changing the front and rear differential oil as soon as possible after a deep water crossing. Also, the risk of water ingress into the differentials can be mitigated by extending the breather tubes up higher than the stock locations. I haven’t done any deep water crossings in the van myself because I don’t want to deal with the chore and expense of replacing all my drivetrain fluids each time after driving through deep water.

    That felt like the shortest 17 minutes and 48 seconds of any Foresty Forest episode. The footage you captured during the ascent, your brief stay at the summit, and the relatively quick descent were absolutely REMARKABLE. BTW, this latest adventure of yours inspired me to hop on the spin bike, re-watch the video, and then cook up some beef stew ... well past midnight!
