    Just a suggestion - instead of using the readheads to anchor the array to the concrete, use Tapcon bolts. This way if you were to take it down, you just remove the bolts, not cut off the readheads and leave them in the concrete.

    I just began building my own panel array mount. Had to clear a lot of trees out of the area and then "planted" 3 telephone poles around 5 feet deep, 12 feet apart for a 24' panel mount. Then strung a level line across the poles at 12' high and cut the tops off at a 33 degree angle (for our latitude). Then took the tops, turned them over and buried those 12' in front of each of the poles I just cut them from so I had short poles in front with a matching 33 degree angle. Then I placed two 16' beams on the tops of the 12' poles and the same on the short front poles. Finally, placed more 16' beams between the front and read supports, lag bolted some u-channel metal onto those, and then secured my panels to those. I only have 12 455 Canadian Solar bifacial panels so far, but plan on adding another 12 to 24 for my Will Prowse inspired 6500 EX split phase system from his blueprints.

    That does look nice and well organized. Very stable as well. Excellent for that many panels. My small set up is just a couple hundred watts using a dumpster find. Someone was throwing out the remainder of a table frame. It’s steel with removable legs. My guess is the glass top had broken. able to get tilt angle by unscrewing a couple of the legs further out than the other two. Ratcheting tiedowns strap holds it to the ground simple wood frame mounts panel to the steel table. always like seeing your experiences and reviews of items like this. Just today realized I’m really into harnessing solar for electricity as I find myself determining brightness of the day based on current coming in on the charge controller. At twilight tonight it was 2/10 of a bolt light out. 😮

    Nice job on the installation! We built something similar 2 years ago out of wood, well, free wood I had from a very large dog house. It is a solid 4x4 beam base with 2x4 everywhere else. There are slight adjustments to compensate for Summer and Winter angles. It is all made out of treated wood. It is a solid mass of wood beams and can be moved if needed. It has a base height of 24 inches off the ground. Works good for 2 years so far. I used 4 330 watt panels almost exactly the same as you have in the video. I did buy an additional 330 watt panel that I put with my other array.

    Fantastic buy. This information is why I subscribe. Thanks Will. Adjusting the angle: Rather than bolting the base directly to the concrete you can fabricate/find/buy a sturdy henge that bolts to each base and then to the concrete. This would allow tilt to any angle you like. It would then require a "stop" on each henge to lock into place. Or, imagine using a large threaded rod and nut at each leg to adjust the angle. The rods would have to be supported by ground anchors or the equivalent. Be DIY. Live big.

    Same everywhere. Most small solar installation companies are like the "script kiddies" of hacking, knowing only one way of doing things while understanding little to nothing about the subject save for what their supplier tells them. Ain't just solar installers either- this lack of true expertise happens with almost every type of service business nowadays. The old saying about "if you want it done right then DIY" means more now than ever and with people like Will and his website forum you can DIY better and cheaper than anyone can do it for you. The exception is grid-intertie systems which require licensed electricians and inspections as well as often specific equipment requirements. If there's a reason you can't DIY (age, physical ability, available time, etc) then you still need to know this stuff so that you can select the best installer and avoid the usual 'instant experts'.

There's been rumblings from British politicians about Chinese companies "flooding the market" with "cheap panels", about which "something" needs to be "done". It's not tue cheap foreign equipment they're concerned about, it's people doing something they can't control and regulate. And now the tinfoil hat comes off and I say this isn't motivated by malice, just stupidity. They just have this vague notion of "ELECTRICITY = FIRE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!".

    I just discovered your channel. I will do a deep dive on your videos to "catch up" on information. I installed a RPS solar well system a few years ago. Converted my domestic well from grid tied to off grid with a grid plug in if needed. The kit included 4-100 watt panels. Using salvaged bed frames I welded my frame. It's supported on 4x4 pressure treated posts buried 3 ft in concrete. The frame pivots to adjust to the seasons. I'm in Central California with good southern exposure on 2 acres. Due to finances, right now I have a 48 volt battery bank consisting of 4 off the shelf marine/RV deep cycle (Walmart) batteries. I'd like to upgrade my batteries in the future. My battery bank is outside in a 3" foam lined weatherproof box that sits under the solar array to shade it from the hot summer sun.

    In Las Vegas. I just tossed the panels on the ground (well I did give them a slight angle and secured them. )...panels are cheap (paid $50/240 W) and the frames are a lot of work. Summer was great. Ran a mini-split, freezer and charged an EV. In late Autumn I barely keep the batteries charged running only the freezer and inverters. Moral ...I think I made the right call. Little work and optimal output in the Summer when my electric bill is highest.

    That looks really strong, looks like it could be built as 2 shorter versions that are 7.5' instead of 15' (Considering using this as option for mounting smaller panels on top of a shipping container)

    You can actually make all these parts yourself quite easily with aluminum square tubing, aluminum angle, and the nuts and bolts. I built mine for my 36' x 6' solar hot water evacuated tube system. Though, for the price, that's an incredible deal and everything is ready to go.

    Or use unistrut/superstrut. It was $2.20 per foot in the before times.... in the long, long ago, like 2019, I don't know what it goes for these days, but I built a 6 panel elevated ground mount array for ~$150. Figure a bit more if you don't have drill pipe lying around like I did to make the big T that I bolted the strut to. One could use concrete and additional unistrut to replicate what I did and still be in the $200 neighborhood.... Depending on what you pay for unistrut.

    Dang that's a really good price as its not much more than the cost of the aluminum itself. If you got the measurements just right you could make a second row on post raised behind the first. Maybe even brace them together with some extra channel connecting them.

    For this price, one can order pre-cut 30mm T-slot profiles for twice as many panels. And they are more modular, one can dismantle them and make something else, if needed.

    Good morning from Sacramento CA. Thanks Will. Good camera set up and sound quality. A few instructions missing like measure and mark center so you have the correct over lap for longer arrays and how to continue the rails to the next piece ( ie 5-8 more panels) than the 4 panels shown and of corse ground bonding. So what I am asking is the a 10" internal connector that slides into the end ?

    With the prices of new and especially used panels coming down sadly racking can cost as much or more than the panels in some cases. I'd like to see more in the way of affordable racking solutions as I would like to cover my 20x40 shop with panels at some point. Also would be interested in hearing about the inverters that will operate without batteries or grid tie and how much they can actually put out in those conditions. Also interested in the power limiting inverters as many people either don't get paid for power put back on the grid or they have meters that don't read backwards. Both common issues if you have an electric co-op.

  • @BobRooney290
    @BobRooney290 Жыл бұрын

    personally, i would raise them at least a foot or two off the ground. because it would be easier to clean snow or leaves that can get stuck in the corner angle edge and not attract animals that would want to build a nest. i would also put them farther out from the home and i would have clusters, because i would want them on a pneumatic pivoting rack that has a solar tracker for maximum sun.
