Story Time!!! So about a year ago I was cashiering and rang up a family of deaf people and felt so bad that I couldn’t communicate with them. There was a lot of pointing and awkward hand gestures. This memory came back to haunt me about a couple of weeks ago so I’ve been watching your videos and teaching myself sign language during my free time. Lo and behold, I got a deaf customer in today. I was able to sign a few phrases to him. I felt super awkward but he looked so happy that I could even sign at all. So thank you so much for doing what you’re doing because I am able to put my foot in the door and experience the world in a different way!!

If youre trying to learn sign language READ THIS. Wright down the word or sentance you eant to learn and constantly go back and fo the signs. For example you can write down 7 words or sentances then go back and do all of them then continue writing. Works for me. Ive been doing that for a year now I can have conversations with my friend

I want to learn sign language. People that are deaf, usually don't have very many IRL (In real life) friends. I would love to be friends with a deaf person, because if you don't give them a chance just because they're deaf, YOU are the one missing out. You and the deaf person could have a lot in common! I thank you for this video, and my family is very proud of me learning ASL.

Don’t have many very irl friends if they’re only surrounded by hearing people* Of course if they are a part of the deaf community then they have friends and a social circle. However it nice to bridge the gap and hearing people learn asl and we all become friends who understand each other. :)

My GF is deaf, we went from writting on everything we could find to I just had to sit down and learn and here's the best way to do it. ONE SIGN AT A TIME don't push it will come to you, ASL is more logical than the English spoken versions. Once you sign, you'll never stop. Oh last tidbit NEVER sign with a fork, spoon or knife in your hand. Fun times :)

Hi. I’ve always wanted to learn asl. And I looked at the alphabet online and started to learn it. My daughters stopped what they were doing and just watched me. “Dad, what’s that?” They asked. I told them once what the letters are and they soaked it up like a sponge. So me and my two girls are slowly learning asl. And the best part is we really don’t need it. Neither of us knows anyone who is hard of hearing or deaf. But the three of us truly believe it’s the best language to know. Though some things confuse me, like the different ways of saying the same thing. For instance “why” is signed two ways that I learned just yesterday. But soon I’ll start using it around the house to imprint it better in our minds. Anyway. Thanks again for these videos. I’ll be back to give you an update someday. Sam

That's amazing that your little girls are leaning to sign as well. I wish I knew more people who knew how to sign in my life, but as I'm going to college soon, I figure I'll probably meet a few deaf people and I'm excited to learn ASL in depth. (There are also two different ways to sign how 😁)

Hi there, I see you posted this a while ago so I don't know if you're still looking for an answer to your question, but I'm learning and my teacher explained it like this: there's a few reasons you might see different signs to say the same thing. One is that there are older and newer signs, like how in English there are old words, for example, the words Shakespeare uses, and there are more modern words that we would prefer to use. Another reason is that one sign may have multiple general English interpretations or vice versa. For example, you might say "bathroom" "restroom" "toilet" etc all referring to the same general place or idea. There are also regional differences. My teacher has shown us that in the Midwest we would sign "pizza" different than the east coast, like how in English people in different parts of the country might say "soda" "pop" or "coke". Sorry this is so long, I hope it makes sense.

You probably wont see this, but I want to say thank you for this. I managed to learn from this a while back and yesterday I had two deaf customers who were completely lost with the concept of the restaurant I work at. The little knowledge in signs that I knew actually went a long way and they appreciated the fact that I tried my best to communicate with them. thanks again!

I have learned a little over 100 words fluently. Need to work more on my finger spelling and recognizing finger spelled words and work on numbers more too. Not sure if I'll ever have the chance to met a deaf person, but I'm really enjoying learning to sign and interpret.

Ive learned so much. I try to watch almost every day. I work with special needs students who are deaf. I want to be a better communicator with them. Also when you repeat the same sign over and over again it helps me remember it better

Make sure it's ASL (British Sign Language is different than American), but also regional dialects exists in ASL

I am working towards being a first responder, whether that be an EMT, paramedic, or firefighter, and I want to be able to communicate with anyone I help. Sing language doesn't have grammar, you can just sign in any order.

Girl I love how you're making videos to help people understand sign language. It truly is amazing to know how to speak it especially for me, because even though I can speak, certain medications that I have to take sometimes make me unable to talk for about a week. A long time ago we had an uncle in the family that was deaf-mute. He spent his school years in Jacksonville Illinois. Me and a few other cousins were taken on adventures under the care of our uncle Donny, camping, fishing and boating. We had a large family and most could communicate with Donny to one degree or another. The last of his life he lived in the St Paul Minnesota area and was teaching Vietnamese refugees ASL that needed it. He passed many years ago. I learned a lot from Donny, especially patience and how to be a good person. I enjoy watching these videos, they bring back memories. I know the alphabet very well the other stuff not as much. The main thing I remember when he taught me sign was how exacting to be .

My son is blind and is attending a school for the deaf and the blind in our state and we are around so many who are signing and we want to be able to join in the conversation! I know you posted this video about a year and a half ago, but I’d like to thank you for what you’re doing. I’m the next generation and I’m greatly appreciating how much you are teaching my friends and I. We love learning sign language and you’ve helped us so much! Though we have no important reason (we mostly just want to learn it for the fun and the fact that we’d be able to communicate silently), it’s still amazing to be able to so easily learn it! Thank you so much again!

I've been trying to learn ASL for a long time now, and I have to day, you are the only person who I can actually understand. I love how you make sure your audience understands what each individual sign means in phrases.

I learned recently that in college my mom had a deaf/hard of hearing friend and learned PSE(I think that's the type) and interpreted for her sometimes so I've decided to learn ASL

I rallye appreciate that you take the time to do side views and especially the explanations of what the hand shape is using basic letters and numbers hand shapes. There are many instructional videos out there on basic ASL signing, but so often it's just not clear what exactly the hand shape is supposed to look like since the front view blocks parts of it. It's also been helpful to realize that a lot of the signs build on the basic alphabet and numbers, makes it less overwhelming when trying to figure out if my fingers are correctly positioned.

I'm studying in a special high school (currently grade 10) and Teacher's Day is approaching. To give the teachers a break,grade 10 students were asked to substitute and I was assigned as one of the teachers who teaches deaf students.The teacher said we could just right what we want to say on the board but as I got to be with them (students) they seemed excited and happy and I wondered why.And I thought "Maybe because this is the time they get to interact with someone who is not deaf." And at that realization, I wanted to learn ASL.And now I'm here. 😊😊

You are the kind of person I wish I had in my life to learn A.S.L. from. Reading the ASL Dictionary 3 times cover to cover just doesn't do it and I don't know anybody who is deaf or hard of hearing that uses ASL to learn more from. my grandfather was near deaf but he liked not hearing my grandmother too much to even think about learning ASL... Im not deaf, and nobody in my family is deaf (that I know of) but ASL is one of those things you might never know if you need or not. Thats why im trying to learn at least the basics of ASL. And let me tell you, this channel has helped me more than any other one. 10/10 uwu

@@gachajames5481 depends how deaf the person is. I'm HOH/partially deaf. Been getting worse over time and sometimes I can't hear the door bell or some noises. We can hear loud noises but it really depends on the HOH person. I'm struggling with speech hearing...

Hi Ashely...you might not ever read this comment because this video is almost 2 years old but I am going to write it anyway! I teach Kindergarten at a public school in San Diego that has a DHH program. I have worked there for 8 years and have learned some very basic signs. But this year I have 3 deaf students in my class who use an interpreter and my desire to learn ASL has grown because I hate not being able to talk to them myself. I stumbled upon your videos after doing a youtube search for ASL Lessons. I just wanted to tell you that your videos are the best and I have loved learning sign from you. I also watched the interviews with your sisters and parents. What an awesome family. It sounds like you were raised in San Diego as well. Thank you for posting these videos, I wish there were more than 3 episodes, I have learned so much already.
