Fun fact: my brother was born with Down syndrome, we thought he was deaf bc he failed his first 3 hearing tests. Sooo I learned sign language for him. Then in kindergarten I met my bff who was deaf. So I’m fluent in sign language!! Fun fact #2: you CANNOT give yourself a name sign, a deaf/hard of hearing person HAS to do it!!

Anyone who uses ASL as their primary, which can also be mute people, not just deaf people, can do it for you. A lot of people forget that many mute and deaf people live hand in hand in community despite differences.

One that is important is that if you are hearing, you CANNOT give yourself (or anyone for that matter) a name sign. In simplest terms, it is a "rule" that only a deaf individual can give you a name sign. They understand your personality from a different perspective, and they likely also know others' name signs in the local Deaf community. So, all of that being said, unless a deaf individual has given you a name sign, just go ahead and fingerspell your name. It's not like everyone will automatically know your name sign anyways.

Her brother was not part of the Deaf community though. The key here is the uppercase D, that means that that person is involved in the culture and community of Deaf people who sign across the nation. Her brother, from what she described, was deaf with a little d. The only people who can give name signs are those who are Deaf :)

Madi B I'm hearing but my uncle is deaf and he has allways told me that either deaf or Deaf people can give sign names. P.s. This could just be a difference in the area we live in (I live in the south)

Stephen Cottman Yes maybe different over there. Tends to only be given by a member of the Deaf community because deaf people rarely even learn to sign. They don't consider themselves a part of Deaf culture or community.

  • @moustachebroadcast8543

    6 жыл бұрын

    E. Russell The actual term “switched at birth” means that at birth, most likely in the hospital, two babies were switched, so one family took home another family’s baby and vice versa. Most switches happen due to an error at a hospital. What the people above are talking about though is a tv show about two girls who were switched at birth. One of the switched daughters, Daphne is deaf, hence all the people talking about switched at birth on an asl video. If you want to watch the show I’d highly recommend it, you can find it on Netflix if you have it

By the way, you can't give yourself a sign name. You have to be friends with a deaf person, and they have to give it to you. Even if they sign, but are hearing, the name isn't valid.

A sign name means you're part of the community and they talk about you when you're gone and they want to talk about you easier(not in a gossipy way in a "oh where is *name*". Its also a big part of Deaf culture and a lot of the time they describe an aspect about you

I was at the store and saw a man and a woman communicating in sign language. I was watching them. But then they saw me. And I guess they didn't know that I knew some sign language and they started talking about me. Signing stuff like "the girl in the gray sweatshirt is looking at you." And I was the only one around wearing a gray sweatshirt.

Madison Tharp I hate when people do that, I was recently at a deaf camping site (it was for awareness and charity for the deaf community) and there was snobby girls who WERENT deaf but had aunts or uncles deaf so the knew asl and I saw them signing (they didn’t know I know asl) and were talking about me and my friend so rudely like “why are they even here? They’re not deaf?” I went with my family and mom’s friends family who has some deaf people, same with my family, I just found it very rude

Story time: I was traveling Europe with a girl scout group and I met some girls who were learning sign language so one night when we were walking around London. I learned the alphabet and some basic words in one night. Then the next day we got on the London eye and there was another family on there. We asked if they wanted us to take a family picture of them and the guy let us know he was deaf. Then we signed to him even though we didn't know if he knew asl or another sign language but he turned out to know asl, it was great even though we were having to spell lots of words. He smiled so big it was amazing, inclusion is amazing. Everyone should at least know the alphabet and basic words(:

Many of the kids used sign language even if not deaf so I can do the whole ausland alphabet, toilet, please/Thankyou, yes/no, food and one of the girls would always sign p*** off/f*** you so I learnt that from around 6 years old.

I'm 12 and I know the whole alphabet and colours in Isl (Irish sign language) and a couple of phrases it's really fun to learn but I'm trying to learn everything because I can't speak and I'm sick of writing everything down on paper and I don't have paper with me at all time but I do have my hands at all times cuz they're attached to my body lol
