I can understand being on his end because it can be hurtful, but you also have to seen it from the employee's side too. The drive-thru employee may not have a pen or paper accessible right there. When I was a college student I worked at BK for 2 years paying for school. Not once did I have a paper and pen in my drive-thru window. I'd have to run to the manager's office to get them too.

MasterJediFunkoLobstah and that’s thing they should keep pen and paper with them in case encounters like this happen. At my job it wasn’t required but I learned to sign “are you deaf” and had a pre written paper it isn’t hard to be inclusive.

I’ve dealt with a deaf person when I started at McDonald’s it was actually my first day and my first order I had to take at first I was a little confused then I realized and called my manager for help so we printed out a receipt and gave him a pen to write down the order and every time he came back i immediately gave him pen and paper so it was easier for him

I had a older deaf guy that came into my Starbucks, at 7 pm, every Tuesday and Thursday. I always had paper and pen ready for him, with his normal order already written on it. He caught on really quick, and his joke was to switch the order up on me sometimes, to keep me on my toes. It made both of us laugh 😂 i learned a few signs so I could talk with him as well, which he really appreciated.

@@testexpirement5181 I'm not deaf, but I'm a person who likes to avoid as much confusion or conflict as much as possible when out in public. If I were deaf and I know I'm going to a drive-thru I'm going to have my order written out beforehand to hand the employee at the window, instead of going through the trouble of asking through gestures or using my phone to communicate. Since I know this could be a recurring issue, I would keep a pen and paper in my car as well. I'm not being a negative person here. I'm just explaining how I would decrease the possible tension and conflict while doing an ordinary activity such as ordering in a drive-thru.

I love how the staff here are better than the one at McDonald’s

ME TOO. This guy came through and handed my coworker his phone and I thought"that's illegall" because I'm dramatic and we aren't allowed to grab people's phones at my cfa. So I walked over there and I saw him sign "hungry" and I put two and two together almost instantly and I started singing to him and he was shocked to see anyone at cfa know asl. It happened on Wednesday, and the sign duo released their part two of deaf man vs drive through on sunday, which is when I watched that. That video made me so mad, they were so rude to him. When I saw that I said I would never let that happen in our drive through.

I liked the staff... She tried hard to accommodate. Showed the ketchup, the sizes, she was quick to get him what he needed to write, and friendly, not rushed or... Acting like she was inconvenienced because of the few more seconds taken to try and make communication with her customer. Good job Carl's Jr lady 👍

When I worked at the movie theater I was able to sign with the Deaf customers who came through. It was great, I can remember one guy's face lighting up when he had his order typed on his phone but I started signing with him and we chatted about what movie he was seeing, etc.

Treasure Byrge I work at the drive ins and I always wanted to be able to sign to someone if they needed it but we don’t have CC for the drive ins so deaf people don’t really come there. One guy came once though with his wife (when I wasn’t there) and from what I heard she was making a scene about there not being subtitles and stuff and the poor guy was apologizing and was really embarrassed. My co workers were like “where is Preslei when we need her, she’s always signing “

Not that they translate as people can type in their own captions for the video and even code placement and timing. For example, there is a typo in the video: hint, contine. Good luck.

Carl's Jr. shift leader here, the most likely reason why they would park your car is because of time management and S.O.S. (speed of service). Every single time someone lands on the "take your order station", the timer starts, and then until the driver leaves the window it would stop. The goal for most Carl's Jr's is 4:30 minute average for the entire day, if you do earlier, your district leaders will award your store with more points. What happens here is that most likely you were facing the manager and the fact she had to write with you and not be able to put it down straight already put them around 4:00 minutes when everything was set, which wouldn't be so bad. But every single time criss cuts, onion rings,tenders, fillets, or zucchini are ordered they will always be done fresh. Fries has a lifetime of 20 min before they go to waste. So a guaranteed 2:29 minutes would have to be used to finish the criss cuts and then having to place it in a medium pack, then pack the burger, hopefully already have the drinks out for the combo, would make them go around 7:00 and thats a red zone and that really hurts them. So she was in such a hurry that she wanted to park you so you get off of the balance that timed your order, so much that she did not give your card back and thats a major rule broken, then get onto the next person so there's no worry. It's a very bad way to service people and it is cheating the system entirely, and then a risk to your card. If a district manager of that place managed to capture it, it would most likely lead to many points being removed off, it's like school you shouldn't cheat, but we somehow still do it despite the consequences. Then the refund, usually when someone pays card, you have to refund in cash, I did not see any cash whatsoever, so what could've happened there was that they played nice with you and lied to you so that you wouldn't put a complaint because there was only two cars, but it could also be that that place has better technology now, cause not all Jr's are up to date. Then if it was a refund at the bottom of your receipt should show cashier, then manager, then reason. If that was not there then they lied to you. I remember when I used to do all of this when I was a crew member but noticed to just work with the system, having a couple points and being still good is better than losing all points because you want to be greedy. That's how I reached shift leader. Anyways hope you guys are having a great time!

Sign Duo as someone who used to work in fast food, I don’t suggest this. A lot of times Bluetooths get super weird with the systems and we hear a really loud screeching noise/static the whole time

I love this kind of videos when you show us things that hearing people don't think about! Is a really good way to create conscious about deaf people and how they live and also how good is to learn sign languaje♡ You're doing a really good work you guys! You're really making a difference

I think because it's not really a disability. Maybe he is more disadvantaged than a hearing person because he has to accommodate to hearing culture, but if you think of it more like he speaks another language, I just tend to view him as confident. I think the whole point is, deaf are expected to accommodate to the hearing world and these videos educate us and make us more aware that the hearing community does not accommodate enough and that we have the ability to change that by learning a few basic signs.

Some people who use ASL are hard of hearing and have some hearing. Some deaf/HOH folks can also read lips.

Actually, even if she meant call like actually call, there are services for deaf or hard of hearing folk to be able to call hearing folk. Essentially, they video chat with someone who translates their sign language into spoken language.

I have a friend who works at McDonald's and knows asl he actually had to use it once or twice while working

I was visiting out of town family when I took my hearing but non-verbal son to a Starbucks. He said/signed “pink please,” while pointing to a pink cake pop. The sweet barista got so excited that she would be able to sign with him, but we don’t know much of it. It was really cool that she jumped right into signing to him. That made me feel like I didn’t need to be the middle man when new friends try to communicate with him. He was 3 at the time, and that was probably the first time that someone recognized he had different needs and I didn’t feel judged or feel bad for my son.

I am learning ASL by myself, and when we have someone from the deaf community come, and I see them sign deaf, I jump in and try to help get their orders. The smiles I get from them make my day. I take pride in trying to make them feel like a normal person.

I love your comment but I don’t feel saying “make them feel like a normal person” was the best way to put it. They are “normal” people, but is there really a full “normal” everyone is different and has their “set-backs” and disadvantages also while having different advantages to life.

That applies to my bf too whenever i don't look at him he would tell me to look at his eye cause if not its not even a conversation.

My dad used to work with the disability people and there was this really sweet,blind,teenager. I think his name was Alex or Kyle? Anyways,the disabled home had a pet day,and he touched a baby kitten for the first time! 🥺 My dad said his expression was one of the sweetest things he has ever seen! ❤️ Dont know how this is related to the video,but I thought it was a nice thought.

Things like this makes me wanna properly pick up sign language. I'm from Singapore and I've been trying to learn ASL (especially since I was a huge fan of the show Switched At Birth), so I'm a little worried it may be different since SSL has it's own slangs etc.. but when I was in Malaysia for a trip 2 years back, we got a cabbie that was deaf. When we were getting off the car I tried to sign "may I help with the bags" but he didn't respond so I was embarrassed, thinking I didn't sign properly. After that I signed "thank you, it was nice to meet you" (the only phrase I can sign confidently), and in that moment his eyes..... they just LIT UP and he signed back excitedly something like "you're great! nice to meet you too!!!" and it was honestly heart warming. He looked so happy and I'm glad in that moment I could communicate with him.. and for that I will continue to learn sign language :)

The only sign I recognized from this video was “more.” My 4 year old son is nonverbal but sure knows how to let me know when he wants more. He’s very good with please and thank you, as well. I try to watch signing videos with him, and we practice, but I guess I’m just not as cool as his speech therapist 🤷🏻‍♀️

Once, I went to McDonalds in Belgium with a friend of mine who is deaf. They refused to help us because they couldn't take his order.... I HATED THAT

Devil Trancy Are you native to Antwerp? I know that the employees there can be very rude to those who aren’t native to the province, most definitely if it’s another dialect. I had the same problem in Rotterdam (Netherlands), I speak fluent Dutch, but they had some problems with my Flemish accent and my Antwerp dialect and didn’t take my order. I’ve been ordering on the digital ordering screens ever since in the Netherlands.

I worked in retail for 8 years, anytime I had a deaf, mute, or blind person; just anyone with a disability, I put my 200+% EFFORT to help them with what they need. Be it carry stuff to their car, reach items, communicate in their way- anything! I remember helping a color blind person with balloons at party city. She was so distraught and I helped her for two hours and enjoyed my time with her in getting her daughter's five birthday balloons and supplies. (it was unicorn theme, so lots of rainbows) Thats the one thing i miss working in retail, helping people and making their day better.

I was just thinking about this the other day because when I go through my local Starbucks drive-through, there's only a talkbox, and I never see any sign or button for someone to press if they are Deaf of HoH. There needs to be more universal accessibility in that respect. Thanks for posting! I always feel more informed after watching your videos.

The Starbucks in my area has a talkbox with a large screen and when someone doesn't respond they actually turn it on so it's a video feed to and from the cashier. A few cashiers know asl. It's amazing to see how they handled it. We do have a very large portion of deaf, hard of hearing, and people with physical disabilities that leave them mute here, and the high school that has a program for them is directly across the street from the Starbucks. I'm sure that has something to do with it.

I know the ABC on sl not hard to learn and learn in elementary

I am deaf myself without my hearing aids... I mostly type things on my phone and show it to the person what items i wanted or need etc. Its amazing how ur gf learns how to sign language and everything. 😁 my gf learns allot about my since i was born with teacher collon syndrome or down sydrome.. She always helps which is rare nowadays when people dont take the time to get to know u n everything.

MINI_GAMES YT because talking to communicate is what most people are used to and what they’ve learned. It’s a habit, can’t fault people for that. Plus they only JUST learned he’s deaf. They would need to see him on a regular basis to get used to it. Also his girlfriend also talks to him (not just for our sakes) it’s a habit that’s been taught from birth.

I'm from australia and work night shift at mcdonalds and most nights there a hearing impaired guy that comes through, he can't speak clearly but he is verbal enough that i can read his lips and understand what he's saying. he's so, so!! lovely!! I can understand basic signs from him and he usually comes in by himself, but last week he came through with his brother, it just made me so so happy :')

I was deaf but I'm not anymore because years of surgery's when I was a kid. I got really rusty that I only knew some sign language because I'm 17 and didnt use it in years. When I saw the video where his food got thrown out that motivated me to learn again. I know AMSL to help people one day because people should be treated right.

i work at best buy and we have a regular customer who is deaf. most of my coworkers just type what they want to tell him and show him their phones. he seems really happy that we try our best to communicate with him since most of us don't know asl. he always signs "thank you" with a big smile on his face when he leaves so i hope we are doing what makes him comfortable. i got the ava app that was talked about in another video but i haven't had the chance to use it with him yet

@@yume5441 its actually better to speak in a deeper voice rather than raising your voice. But I suppose it's hard to get out of the habit of doing that as well and some people don't notice that they're doing it either.

I’ve worked in the fast food industry at a drive thru and met hard of hearing people more than completely deaf people so my natural reaction would be to raise my voice & enunciate my words so they could at the least read my lips. Of course I would just offer a pen and paper to make communication easier and at least knew how to say little things in ASL (like “thank you”) through experience to help a bit. But I completely get where you’re coming from though. The lady was still very willing to help and seemed very caring especially at the end of their interaction. At the end of the day, she was doing the best that she could with whatever knowledge and empathy she had to help someone who clearly needed it 😇

im sure it’s just a natural reaction, when you think someone can’t hear you, you raise your voice. probably didn’t completely register that’s he’s completely deaf quickly.

You guys deserve more subs. These videos are really cool and really make me realize how deaf people can be treated sometimes and what they have to go through on a daily basis

I just discovered your channel and just want to say how much I love it! I can relate to the worker side as I knew very little sign language when working retail, but had an experience where I pulled out receipt paper to help a customer. We wrote back and forth to answer her questions, and I could tell from the look on her face how much she appreciated me taking time to focus on her and point her in the right direction of the store. Again, I knew very little at that time, and she smiled even bigger when I was able to say thank you to her in ASL. I still have a lot of learning to do, but I love getting to surprise my husband with little phrases I teach myself, especially holiday greetings. He has been deaf since he was a toddler, but did get a cochlear not long after. He takes it off when he sleeps, so I have learned some more signing for when his cochlear is off, and when I throw new ones his way he gives me a huge smile and blushes a little. All that said, he only has a cochlear on his right side. So, when you guys showed the clips of your girlfriend ordering from the passenger seat, I can say, we have had to do that many times. Or having me repeat what is said when the speaker is really bad. Thank you again. It means a lot to so many people. 😊

I would love to see a video on the top beneficial signs to learn as a hearing person if you just want to have that knowledge to ensure accessibility if needed.

I finally subscribed today after watching a few videos. I work at Starbucks and found your channel after trying to learn some beginner ASL for a few deaf customers that come in. These videos are so natural, and I love seeing your relationship. You guys make it so easy to understand your experience, as well as make me feel like part of the conversation. Thank you for making your channel!

I'm just starting to learn ASL, and even though I needed captions to understand, it was cool watching you sign and sometimes being like 'I recognize that sign!'

Ive seen some Starbucks where a person that knows ASL comes on the screen and they take your order. Tbh every drive thru should have this!!!

Thank for sharing this video! I have a deaf boyfriend and it’s so relatable when we enter through the drive through and i remember the first time I really saw and understood what every deaf person feels and experiences during these moments in everyday life. 🤟🏼You both are amazing! & I can’t wait for more videos!

I’ve developed an interest in learning sign language a few months ago, but I’ve only learned a bit of sign language because I was a bit busy with school works and I even get lazy when I get time. But now I’ve finally made up my mind to take learning it seriously now, and I’ve been searching for sign language basics for beginners and all that and while I was searching for videos and lessons here on KZread, I happened to see your channel, and this video is the first. And I’ve decided to be a subscriber because I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from the two you! It taught me a lot of the struggles that deaf people go through, and it just made me want to learn sign language even more hoping that one day, I’ll be able to help a deaf person if I ever run into one some day, in whatever kind of situation, like ordering at restaurants and more. There’s this group that I really love, they’re called *BTS,* they’re a group of 7 amazing guys who dance and sing. It all started a few months back when they released their new music video for their comeback titled *”Permission To Dance”.* I didn’t know, but found out after that they actually added some sign language in their choreography in their in the music video and I saw so many people, deaf people actually, who expressed their gratitude towards the group for adding sign language, they said they felt touched. There was this one person I saw on twitter who said, his grandfather was deaf, and was never able to enjoy music, but when he saw her watching “Permissions To Dance”, and noticed the sign language in it, her grandfather smiled and I think she also mentioned her grandfather also dancing along to the choreography that had the sign language? I saw a lot of deaf people dancing along to the song’s choreography even though they couldn’t hear the music. It really warmed my heart and that’s when I decided I wanted to learn sign language. They’re just amazing. I think you two would really enjoy the song too! I hope they influence even more people through their music just like how they influenced me to learn sign language when they added sign language in their music video, and make life even just a bit easier for people with disabilities. 💜

Whenever I see the reminder to turn on closed captions I’m reminded that not everyone enjoys keeping them on all the time like I do.

You guys are amazing! I’m a deaf 14 year old and I love seeing people like you trying to spread awareness about our shortcomings and how to overcome them!👍

This makes so happy to watch. Ima be watching you guys a lot. I know simple sign language such as “Please, dont, stop, thanks.” And really nice stuff such as,”You are amazing” I’m learning more. So I could have a simple conversation with somebody.

We have the technology to create “ATM” type interfaces for drive-thrus that nearly everyone could use. Yeah, someone might vandalize it, but they vandalize menu boards and those are always repaired. Have y’all considered using an app to order, and then film picking it up at the drive-thru? I wonder if the phone app has the ability to notify that you’re deaf, or maybe that isn’t necessary. Yeah, probably unnecessary. You’ve shown me an issue I’ve never thought about before. In a department store I’ve assisted deaf and blind people without much difficulty. I’ve experienced the TTphone service once in a call center which was very easy. The company even received a complimentary letter about that call, which surprised me. If we can have braille on drive- thru ATMs, surely interactive keyboards for fast food isn’t much harder. They have tablets for employees to use outside, after all.

I love how they can look in each otheres eyes and know exactly whay they are signing without having to constantly watch hand movments

I don't even need to ask who got this recommended... Things like this should bring us together!

I find your videos so helpful. As someone who is hearing and has been learning for a while these help me understand signs in context and just how much your community has to go through with things I find easy.

I hope this doesn't come across as rude, but specifically for drive thrus, isn't it more convenient for you to carry a pad of paper and a pen in the car instead of waiting for the employee to provide it for you?

It then put the burden upon the disabled person instead of the establishment to make sure their place of business is accessible to disable people. Yah pen and paper seems like a small thing but this logic could be apply to something larger. For example, grocery shopping. Wouldn't it be better for blind people to use seeing eye app to help them shop? Instead of asking that question, we should ask why does blind people need seeing eye app to help them shop? Why dont these stores have braille names near the products, so blind people could read and know what they are without needing additional aid? Technologies are great and it makes disabled people life way easier but it is also costly. Our society needs constant reminder that our world is not accessible to a lot of people, and not bringing their own pen and paper is one of those reminders.

I agree fully. However this video was made for educational purposes, and i did not have paper and pen at the time. Also the burden falls upon the establishment as stated in title III of the ADA.

Employee is there to assist in anyway possible but not with a dumb attitude they taxs to so whatever it is they need supply it and lose the bad hearts get good if was u i am sure it would be different so start thinking if it was me hmmmm

Starbucks if you haven’t already, I’m a barista there and some of my favorite regulars are deaf and I’ve picked up some simple signing so I can hold short conversations with them! It’s been my experience that other SB baristas are pretty good at communicating with deaf customers even if they can’t completely ASL through a whole order or convo too :) One of my friends at another store actually had a deaf coworker! And if you’ve seen Starbucks at rush hour...oof. It’s hard to keep everything straight for our customers even if you aren’t deaf! Haha

David W. A Starbucks in my city has a deaf barista so they have a sign that tells you to give her you ticket when you get the drink etc. the Starbucks has sign language “drawings” so people get educated... it just shows people who say deaf people can’t work normal jobs are idiots lmao.

I RESPECT starbucks employees the most! It's crazy on weekends and i usually try my best to have my order ready or have ellen order for me. I never want to screw up the ordering process for starbucks, i know it can get hectic! However when I am by myself, Starbucks is always so sweet and accommodating, that is one of the major reasons why I "sponsor" (give my money to) starbucks so much 😂

So glad this video is made to raise more awareness. I know one day I’ll have a job and may encounter someone that is unable to hear and this video is so great because it’s so true, it’s HOW you respond in your attitude. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Deaf people can still use a phone they just have to go thru a third party...when i was little my best friend was deaf and to call her i would call a 1-800 number (TTY i believe it was called...they would then call my friend and i would talk and they typed and she received that and would type back and the person would read it to me...nowadays there are prob apps that can be downloaded but still the same thing they are still able to use a phone

I loved your comment about how they didn’t have a sign. I have a service dog and when there is some type of sign there is a better chance that staff have been trained about the law (or in your case how to communicate with everyone). It seems like a small thing but I always feel more confident when I see a sign. Thanks for sharing this video! ❤️

I took asl for two years in high school and I’m trying to get back into understand it to help others ( I’m a nurse and I’ve come across deaf people and have watch staff get frustrated and aren’t willing to listen to them or treat them like people it’s very disheartening). This has helped me familiarize some words I’ve completely forgot. So thank you so much for helping me help others.❤️❤️❤️

I love videos like this. I work retail and know some sign language I’m currently in ASL 4 and it’s very useful! I have some regular customers who come in and are deaf and it’s great to just talk to them on a personal level.

I would to see a series on this to see how different restaurants react and do !! I worked at a McDonald’s for 5 years, and sometimes customers accidentally skip the speaker to order so we have to take the order at the window and while we are taking there other another person can be placing their order at the speaker so the orders get out of place and end up charging the wrong order, since we get use to them being in the order of the cars!

At my high school I took ASL but when I switched schools they didn’t offer it at my new school and now I have to take ASL online but it’s so much harder without a deaf teacher because online everything is so formal but these videos help me interpret signing in an actual conversation so much better. I don’t have too much experience at a drive through and therefore I’m unfamiliar with the do’s and don’t (they don’t exist where I live), but Have you ever dined at a proper restaurant? The type that you sit at a table, there’s a host, a server, a sommelier, etc. Those places they typically take your card to their register and bring it back with the receipt for you to sign don’t they? You don’t see what the server does with your card, but you assume they don’t do anything malicious which 9 times of 10 is the case that nothing happens. Also, if you ever made an online purchase in your life, or if you have a card connected to a subscription service like Netflix, Spotify, etc you are trusting your information to them, in the hopes that they don’t sell your information for profit (they do, and some companies are more evil in this regard). The truth is, nothing is private or secured unless it’s cash.

Subscribed! I’m hearing impaired with hearing aids in both ears since middle school, no I’m not deaf but I’ve heard that word all my life. Thanks, it’s nice to know people out there like me- almost like a confidence boost
