There was a deaf girl on my daughter's softball team. EVERY girl on the team learned sign language for her. Made me very proud of my daughter and her teammates.

This is a much more touching story than one where a girl at a fast food counter happened to know sign language on the day a deaf girl happened to come in to order. Thanks for sharing.

I took ASL in high school and was a server at Dennys during that time. Once an older man came in and he was really nervous. He sat in my section and I got everything together to bring to his table. When I walked over he had gotten out a piece of paper and a pen and wrote “I am deaf, but i need a second to look at the menu.” I nodded and signed to him what he would like to drink. I swear his eyes lit up like a 5 year old boy on Christmas Day. I took his order and everything and let him eat when I brought the food. After I did all my check ins w him and he finished. He left me a $20 on the table and a note “My wife has been in the hospital for the last 4 months fighting cancer and we would always come here when we were having a bad day. This is my first time here without her and I was scared about making your job harder, but you made this the most comfortable meal without my wife. Thank you for being so patient and compassionate.” I cried in the walk in for 25 minutes, and I still have the note. That was 6 years ago.

My aunt and uncle are both deaf and helped me learn sign language as well growing up, they used to baby sit me a lot and Sign language of course was our only form of communication with each-other. I still keep in touch with this family and I’ll never forget this special day! ❤️

Thank you Taylor for such a beautiful video! This left me weeping it was so emotional and beautiful. What a connection you two made. She must have been so happy to be able to communicate with you on her own......what a sense of pride and inclusion and independence it must have given her. I think this goes down as the most beautiful example of human compassion and togetherness I have ever seen in my life! This right here is the way the world should be everyday......the way we should be everyday.......the way life should be everyday!! Taylor, I'm 52 and I grew up with a deaf uncle and cousin. My uncle lived next door with my Grandparents and as kids we learned the alphabet so we basically just spelled everything in letters and had our own body language. Over the years I picked up a few signs here and there but mostly I just spelled everything because that is what we were taught. My 80 yo uncle was on his way to deaf church and was killed in a head-on collision in 2004. I never got to fully learn ASL and when I think back I felt so ashamed and horrible that I had the best teacher anyone could have asked for and I never learned. After seeing your video, it made me want to learn again and at least still communicate with my cousin and any other deaf community members. I've been doing well and it was amazing how many signs I remembered seeing during their chats and now what they mean. Thank you for the gift you gave this young lady and I just wanted you to know that your positive interaction made more impact than just that day.

My mom was a sign language interpreter. I worked in fast food at a mall and there was a deaf customer who would come in and ask for a paper and pen to write their order down. So I had my mom teach me enough to be able to take orders. The customer was so happy she started telling her friends. Before long I had close to a dozen regular customers who would come so they could take their order in sign language. It doesn’t take much to do something special and make an impact in your community.

As a former special education teacher I understand what it meant to that young lady to be able to place an order without assistance. The cashier will always have a place in this lady’s heart as well as the cashier will feel the same.

The cashier just made that girl so happy, cant imagine what it would be like to have trouble communicating.

I've had that experience while working for a mom and pop burger joint, mostly with Spanish speaking customers. If you expend the effort to bridge the language barrier, they will as well. A deaf trio used to come in all the time, and one would fill out the order pad, then work with me to get everything straight, i.e., what was wanted/not wanted on their sandwich, how much ice in their drinks, and so on.

Unfortunately not in retail. Hell the place i worked at they would of said don't waste your time doing that.

I had a deaf friend in school so I learned to sign. I took ASL classes as a foreign language in high school. Easy A for me and she was the teachers aid. She loved having a classroom full of kids she could talk to. Later when I was in college I worked at Applebee's and had a deaf couple come in. Nobody wanted to wait on them which pissed me off so I did. When I started signing to them it blew my coworkers away and made the couple so happy. I soon had a whole bunch of deaf customers. :) good tippers too.

Taking American Sign Language as a foreign language in high school is pretty ironic.

The cashiers signing was very fluid, not choppy like she just took a class in high school. Great job! I’ve interpreted a few times for people I see out and about, strangely it usually happens at Home Depot. 🤟

That employee is simply amazing. Notice how she wasn't overly flashy or made a big deal out of it? She didn't draw any unwanted attention and made the customer feel comfortable. She did her job with a smile and didn't make a scene. That's a champion right there! 👍🏼

@@zigix642 I don't use it enough, but I know enough to communicate with someone. However, I didn't learn it until high-school and it was very hard to pick up on. I'd definitely want my kids to learn it and then also I would like them to learn one other language aside from english. I think it's important that we incite this kind of learning in our children from a young age. It teaches them to be more inclusive, open-minded and to challenge themselves.

I don't think they should be forced to learn the entirety sign language from an early age, just some basic signs that will help communicate with someone who is deaf and then they can choose if they want to keep learning it as they grow older

I love this! This reminds me of the young girl who was walking home from school & saw a woman lying on a stretcher about to go into an ambulance. The EMT was having difficulty communicating with the woman, who was deaf. The young girl walked over to them & started signing to the woman. When asked how she knew ASL, the young girl said her mom was a healthcare worker & taught her how to sign because "you never know when it could save someone's life". Way to go, mom!

Our daughter is fully hearing but is fluent in sign language. She once had a part time job at a popular furniture store and approached a couple of customers who were signing to each other after communicating with them in sign language they bought furniture. Later lots of deaf people started showing up at the store during her working hours so they could communicate with her. Stores should hire more people who can sign and hear although there may not be that many. Our daughter majored in Deaf Studies and some of her friends are deaf.

In some States there are Businesses that pay more for Bilingual employees, I think Sign Language qualifies! If employers ask for this, employees will take it seriously!

I served a deaf customer at work. Well her daughter was deaf. I saw her signing to her mom while in line so I told my crew I’d take care of it. I said “welcome, my name is Scott. I’m learning ASL, so please sign slowly, and I’m sorry if I get a few words wrong” Well the daughter just lit up with delight, and the mom appreciated me making an effort for trying to communicate. I got by thankfully.

Ive said it for years! there should be one universal sign language taught in every school around the world, not only are deaf people included in every conversation but when we travel there is no language barriers ANYWHERE!

Well it does seem nice, but all the different sign languages are based out of different cultures. So each sign language has its own culture included into it. I think it would take the different deaf people's uniqueness away from them if they all tried to combine cultures to make one language.

OMG! As a business owner, why would you NOT send your staff to learn sign language? They would be in such high demand! This girl needs to be given a raise, bless her heart! This is a well brought up kid!

Because it's not in high demand in reality. May not like it but most businesses that deal with direct to face customers don't really all that much deal with deaf customers. Most people aren't deaf and since most customers businesses deal with happen to not be deaf. The demand isn't high to learn sign language. A small percentage of people are deaf and most of those people don't deal with customer service personally. It's a fact.

Depends on the business. The employee turn over at a fast food place such as this would make it very difficult. I suppose you could teach the basics used only in the store but it is an entire language and not something you learn quickly. I spent two years learning ASL in college but unfortunately I did not use it much and have forgotten most.

Just imagine the additional customers the business would get IF they decided to do something special - something different - to make them stand out - to cater to a clientele no one does... Maybe encourage staff to learn Sign, or perhaps a foreign language - maybe even offer a menu in Braille (I once was dining @ a restaurant in Amsterdam - a family came in and sat down - it was clear the daughter was blind, but the server didn't miss a beat - she gave the little girl a menu of her own - in Braille - I can't describe the look on the little one's face when she discovered she could order from a menu by herself - now, is that a normal thing in NL? Actually, more than you would think...) THAT is how a successful business is operated - otherwise your business is just a commodity. In my consulting work - that's what I teach - I teach 'How do we bring value that will set you apart from the mediocre?' Ans: By thinking differently and seeking to provide value to a segment of customers that have been overlooked or worse ignored...

@@IamChevalier Fast food is supposed to be and entry level job, something for high school teens to do for job experience, while learning a trade, or before going to college. There is not a fast food business in the USA that wants to pay to have their employees learn any second language just to have them quit and move on in a few months to a year. They want to pay them as little as they possibly can so they aren't out money when they do eventually quit. Turn over rates in that line of work are incredibly high so logistically it's not feasible. This cashier already knew sing language and sure I feel she should be payed a bit more for having that skill but she wont, it's just not how it works here in the USA.

Girl on the counter did really well and made it look like a routine that was very smart and shows her presence of mind.. kudos girl....

This really made me tear up. The love and compassionate the cashier showed and how sweet and soft the customer was.

I often feel like when choosing another language to learn in high school, ASL should be a choice. When I was in school it wasn't. I would've taken it! Its really forgotten about.

I am a daughter of a deaf mother and this video makes me and my mom very happy and glad that the cashier was able to help this deaf daughter and I just love to see the smile she had when she realized the cashier knew sign language 🥰

Bravo to Chick-fil-a employee for taking the time to learn sign language, it makes customers feel accepted, as Human. ALL company's should have at least one multilingual employee, & one capable of signing, we're all in this together. Sharing the LOVE is always ah good thing. 💓

That warms my heart. I feel the same way when restaurants have braille menus since I’m blind. It sounds so simple for abled bodied individuals, but something as basic as being able to communicate or read isn’t as common for people with disabilities. I wish this kind of interaction could be more common place!

I grew up with a deaf girl in the neighborhood about the same age as my older sister. They became best friends and eventually me and my older sister both learned to sign. It's always amazing to be able to use the skills we developed as children to make people smile and feel seen.

Notice how the cashier just carried on as normal as if this is an everyday occurence? Thats how you know she learned ASL to help people, not use it as a talking point for social media clout.

it probably has nothing to do with “helping” people . she probably has a deaf parent or sister/brother so she had to learn. either way any language no matter if its sign or a cultural language like spanish/french etc is good to know .

Oh my, this is beautiful. Thank you to the lovely cashier who treated the customer like anyone else. So empowering for that dear customer.

I've watched this video several times and I get teary each time. Something about a world where kindness is first nature rather than something you have to "try" at. I wish both ladies a wonderful life. Thanks for sharing.

That cashier is just awesome, wow, just wow. We get a glimpse of the other cashier amazed at her being able to communicate through sign language.

The cashier deserves either a raise or a bonus of some kind because that little extra bit of love and caring for your customer will keep that customer Coming back and will probly bring others in because of it. This is true customer service!! I don’t like the food there but I always have the best service when I go to a chic filet. Thank you to all chic filet employees and this makes me happy that I’m from NC and not far from where this occurred.

I'm self taught in sign language and hoping to get certified soon. I worked at both McDonald's and Walmart and don't really think of mentioning that I know a little sign language. It came in handy at both jobs and my coworkers would be shocked when I signed. When I was at McDonald's there was a regular who was deaf and we never knew if he would go through the drive thru or walk in. If somebody spotted him they would switch spots with me. The could write to him and stuff but we became buds so they would swap with me to say hi. That gentleman made my day.

This is what the world needs right now! This video made me so happy.....it's all blurry now because I have so many tears in my eyes! This cashier must have enlightened and made this girl so happy.......made her feel so welcome and comfortable to be able to communicate with her. Given her such a sense of pride and independence to fulfill a task on her own without assistance! The most beautiful example of human emotion.....kindness....inclusion....and pure heart felt love for every human being! Thank you for your beautiful example of what we all should be doing to make our world the way it should be!

Another example of the compassion of Chick-fil-A and their employees. Well done young lady. You brought tears to this old man.

I took in a foster daughter many years ago, she is now one of the rest of us forever. She had a job in a Salad Bar restaurant during her college years. One of her regulars was a 15 year old boy who is deaf and his mother...the mother ordered for him. So what did Alicia do? Took ASL just so she could take his order directly from him! I am so proud of her, I'm tearing up as I write this. This was 13 years ago and she's still that person, the one who is fierce yet gentle. She's also quite beautiful....I'm sure that boy had a crush on her after all that. When so many think the youth of today is lost I know they're wrong.

That is awesome, Wish there were more people like her. I was born deaf and I was taught SSE (signing exact English) also called signed English. I came across a few cashiers that knew some signs.

Trust me, they are lost. Even if 20% of them aren't terrible. Selfishness, laziness and ignorance have reached catastrophic levels in those under 35. It's common to think the younger generation is lazier, sure; but to my knowledge, this is the first time the younger generation is actually significantly less intelligent and unable to think critically.

Heart warming. When I see people helping others with such joy while doing it, and not expecting anything in return, it makes them 15x more attractive!!!😍

That was WONDERFUL young woman who HELPED the other FEEL INDEPENDENCE 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

I had a similar experience where a man came into my store who was deaf and he had his sister with him who was hearing. I was able to serve him comfortably because I'd learned ASL and his sister actually also ordered with ASL before thanking me and explaining that she's hearing but very grateful to see that I was able to offer the same service to her brother as anyone else. We love these moments in my shop. ❤️

Perhaps a silly question....It's my understanding Sign Language is not universal, meaning ASL is different from Spanish SL, British SL et cetera. Question, is it safe to assume there are people who are Bi-lingual in Signing? Sign Interpreters? Thanks

@@kevincross4302 You are correct. American Sign Language (ASL) is just another language. Just as there are different languages used in each country, there are various sign languages. So, there are those that know different sign languages. I can not imagine how they are kept straight. I struggle simply with ASL. In fact, interestingly- just as there are different dialectics of English from different countries or even different states within the U.S. ASL has various "slang" that is used based upon where you are from. The basis is the same, but different regional nuances.

That's so awesome

My son had a a few moments like this when he was 17 working at Great Wolf Lodge. He had been taking sign language in High School and got a chance to help a guest out. While he wasn't as proficient as this wonderful young lady was, he was able to communicate enough with what he knew to help the guests out. It wasn't long before other employees were hunting him down to get him to help out. It's a great skill and I am really glad that his school offered it as a second language.

A friend of mine started learning sign language because she had customers come into her store and she couldn't communicate. She now teaches it.

This made me sob. I'm deaf and effectively communicating with others can be a daunting task in itself. What a sweet moment for these girls!

@@SimpleSavvy30 honestly in many ways i can agree. i wont lie i am disabled. and being pc just to me is kind of something i hate. if you say something with a respectful and normal tone being called disabled is not a bad thing. we are what we are. whether it be deaf, blind, or like me i have some severe mobility issues. the most embarrassing thing is when people gawk or treat you like just because one part doesnt work right you are obviously mentally plus emotionally deficient as well. i would rather people simply either as questions or just keep on going and respect that we are not stupid or people not treated with the respect of a human being.

American Sign Language is now recognized in NC high schools as a foreign language requirement. Proud to say my granddaughter has completed two years.

Peter, that is because in most places they cannot come into the average retail establishments and expect to be understood. I am old enough to remember when profoundly hearing and or vocally impaired were institutionalized.

@Peter Evans So because you personally haven't met any deaf people, learning ASL as a foreign language requirement is a dumb idea? That's like saying because you haven't met a Spanish speaking person, it's a dumb idea to learn Spanish. It's not as if they don't exist, just because you haven't met them. It would quite literally open up a new world to learn how to speak another language, let alone ASL. It''s not as if learning ASL in high school is going to put students at a disadvantage. Not understanding why you think it's such a dumb idea to learn a language.

In this horrible world we live in (wars, death, famine, & disease), it's nice to see some happiness and joy. Thanks for sharing!

Kindness and compassion to others costs nothing.

This is so good. I am deaf and while I cannot sign, I DO rely on lip reading and due to the current pandemic, mask wearing has made it difficult. I work in a supermarket and not every customer wants to remove their mask just to talk to me if they have a query, they will often walk away, this actually hurts me, as I love helping people and such behaviour makes me feel useless. I cannot understand what you say through your mask. I am glad that that cashier knew, more people should know/be aware.

Do look into clear face masks. Because of the masks interfering with the hearing and visually impaired, finally face masks and shields are an option.

I don’t mean any offense by this question, but why don’t/didn’t you learn some form of sign? Not only would it help you connect with your wider deaf culture and community, but it would also make communicating with everyone else, deaf, hearing, doctors, lawyers, etc, much easier.

There's a supermarket that I once went into (it's not my regular, I just happened to be in that part of town that day) where I was surprised to realise all the cashiers were deaf. This was before the pandemic. Your comment made me realise how much harder their jobs must have become. I wonder if they were able to stay or had to move to different roles.

Anytime we, as a society, can make someone with a disability feel more confident and independent we make the entire world a better place. Love thy neighbor as thyself

the golden rule should be made into a law. because of an ongoing ear problem since i was 6 months old i'm nearly deaf and have been trying to learn sign language for over 50 years. no one will teach it to me without charging me some outrageous, ridiculous fee that i can't afford. isn't capitalism GREAT?

I’ve been involved in deaf culture all my life my sister is deaf. I know it’s politically correct to say disabled but DEAF PEOPLE DO NOT VIEW IT AS A DISABILITY AND IS OFFENSIVE TO THEM, Just to let any one know just say deaf they appreciate that, If you ever meet a deaf you can ask them! And they will BLUNTLY tell you.

I’d agree cause it’d help with those who are deaf feel more welcome and it’s just overall make it easier for the deaf community, and I’d disagree because people can choose whatever other language to learn instead of having to learn sign language and another language that they originally wanted to learn. I like trying to vouch for both sides :]

Man this is what the human experience is all about Literally been learning a little more sign language because we have this older woman who is hard of hearing where I work & it she says it helps because she usually read lips but everybody is wearing masks but she is such a delight ❤️

Bad things of this world will always over shadow the good things, but alot of good things are done without fanfare. There is good people in this world. God bless them.

A few years back I had a brain aneurism that left me ‘socially’ inept. I struggle with things that use to be real easy for me! When I see people like the young cashier I cry for the big effort the young lady put in to make people’s lives like that young lady’s and myself easier. Thank for the video it really lifted me, and helped me realize I’m still worth something. To both the young ladies you’re both awesome!

Fremont California...the schools in our city in the '90s and 2000's taught sign language because we have the school for the deaf and blind in our city. My son spontaneously helped a kid out shopping when he saw him getting upset with how he was being ignored but mocked. So he signed and helped him and let rip with the staff at the store. I was never so proud as a Mom and so surprised to find out he had an unknown skill to help until that moment. Going blind myself so I was thrilled to find that our city includes all kids from all families to stay in touch and live as regular a life as possible. His class has spread all over the USA and these young 20 somethings? Amazing generation. Gen z and then some. Oh yeah!

A one minute video brought me to tears. I have a 14 yr old daughter with Autism and little things in life make a big difference. Such a sweet moment!!

As someone that once lost their hearin an it was corrected thru surgery wen i was 11. This makes me tear up with joy. I love stories like this.

@@KuriusOranj thank u. I appreciate that. Altho i had surgery to help me hear. I still have a tuff time hearing. I get frustrated havin to ask people to repeat themselves. If i see someone get frustrated from me askin i just do my best to figure out wat they said by evaluating the situation. Of course i naturally talk loud. I got in trouble for talkin in class all the time wen i was younger b4 an after my surgery. Also it takes me a while to type a message cause im not satisfied unless it is good grammar. Thanks again for ur comment.

My favorite part of Miracle on 34th Street was when Santa has a conversation in Dutch with a little girl and they sing the Sinterklaas song. The song is very real. I also had my dad watch the movie with me and translate the conversation.

@@derkernspalter actually some1 who can speak sign language+englisha and another language can make big buck as a translator in social service office and big hospital as translator, they average $30 usd a hours up til 45-50 a hour so.

It was over 20 years ago, but I was working in the restaurant of a country club, and one of the kitchen staff was deaf. I only knew how to sign the alphabet, but one day I decided to approach her, and spell a few words, saying hello, and spelling my name. To this day, I can still picture the immense joy in her face. It warms my heart all these years later. She felt seen. And taught me a powerful message.

Bless her heart! So many challenges people with multiple problems face, it’s a joy to see a situation that everyone can be at ease and understood.

I just love it when two people connect on such a deeper level.

At the end the cashier smile, she knew she made that customer felt comfortable way to go.

Just a little understanding and kindness goes a long way.

So worth it! I’m teaching my little cousin with Down syndrome sign (because she can’t hear that well, and can’t speak yet). It would mean so much for people like her! Thank you for learning, it’s amazing that you are. (I don’t know much sign, only words that I feel my little cousin needs to communicate at this moment. she’s only 3, so it takes time to learn signs.. but it’s going lol.) I’m her special support worker, so I see how valuable sign is for her, and how it would be so helpful that others knew a little bit of sign as well. So thank you so much, it will mean a lot to people who use sign to communicate.

In my experience, Chick-fil-A has some of the greatest employees. Great job making that girl's day. I dated a deaf girl for two years and she was teaching me to sign all the time but I am not even close to the girl in this video. Amazing.

@@johnd5398 yet every heart warming video concerning fast food is from there. The employees make at least 11 bucks an hour starting. The first thing employees are taught is to treat everyone with respect no matter what. Something you libs would never understand. Ya'll are the most racist, intolerant, I have the moral superiority, name calling, unaware idiots God ever created. Matter of fact I think I'll head over there now and get me a chicken sandwich.

And now the employee needs to be made top employee of the year and also be put on standby . That customer will feel comfortable coming back knowing there's someone that can communicate with her.

Every time I see this it makes me so happy! She must have felt so good and the cashier is amazing for that! I wish I knew sign language and hope to learn. Such a pure moment for them both!

Same here! Our Chic-fil- A is super organized where I’m from, and I’ve even had employees so nice that they’d open the doors for me and say something pleasant on the way in or out!
