Time and time again, I am stunned just how unrepairable modern devices are. It's pretty sickening actually, but nonetheless, great fix!!

But he actually repaired it tho. You might mean they are more fragile and built with planned obsolesence, because Samsungs are very easy to repair, they were the first ones who started offering original replacement parts, and almost all their devices use the same type of screw unlike Apple who used like 10 diferent types and makes repairs a pain.

This a factor because of cost. Think of a repair shop. This display cost $350, the shop has to mark it up for a profit, so lets say $50, so now the screen costs $400, then their is labor costs. This is not just heat removing a display and replacing (iPhone and most Android devices), your completely disassembling the phone. This could cost $150+ in labor, so now a $1500 phone is going to cost $550-650 to repair. Most people would just buy a new phone.... When display prices come down so a shop could replace it for $300-$400 it might be an option for them to repair...

Companies don’t really care for IF they can, it’s a matter of SHOULD they. If I was running a business I’d rather take the decision that consumes less time and money for the same general outcome. And a replacement is more viable as a option. Labor (people) aren’t cheap, they are in fact often the most expensive part of a company expense.

  • @TheCoolDave

@@Windows98R Nah, the first fold phones that came out were canceled because of even the display models cracked very quickly. They were very poor design, and they redid it and with a few revisions they felt it was good. Still the tech is not even close to being ready for everyone. I know people who have had problems with them after a few months and by then the warranty was up. I feel the tech is not ready for the consumer pocket but, to each their own... It's devices like this that keep repair places open and making a profit...

I’ve had one of those in the same color. Promptly sold it to a friend after a few weeks (it had complimentary Care+), especially after reports of the screen spontaneously cracking at the crease and getting scruffs at the hinge from normal use. Repairing the screen is expensive if you didn’t get Care+. If you pre-ordered one, you’re one of the lucky ones that get complementary Care+ protection for 1 year and a 25W charger. Right now, they’re selling even slightly used ones for less than half of the retail price because of the cost of repair (especially if you don't have Care+).

Man, I was with you until I got to go hands-on with a Z Flip 4, I ended up upgrading from my Note 20 Ultra 5G to the Z Flip 4 on the spot and haven't regretted it a bit. I was really concerned with durability as well but it seems like they've worked a lot of the kinks out and from my experience thus.fsr it isn't really much different than having Amy other phone except I don't use the inner display in places that might damage it like anywhere that there are large amounts of particles in the air or stuff flying through the air. I've also been pleasantly surprised by the cover screen. I was concerned about it being too small/narrow for my fat fingers but surprisingly I make fewer spelling errors/mistypes with it than I did with my Note 20 Ultra 5G. It sits in my hand more comfortably than the Note as well, even when unfolded thanks to the way Samsung balanced both halves, and both screens look fantastic! If you have a phone store near you where you can play with one in person I eould highly encourage you to do so. I've been shocked by how different thr phone is in person compared to the idea I had in my head.

Recently got myself one of these in perfect "like new" condition for only £400 (I'm becoming obsessed with buying tech the moment the next gen model comes out, just got a 2021 legion 7 for £700 less than the 22 model despite only a 10% performance difference, imo it's the best way to find bargains). I absolutely love the phone, it's the perfect replacement for my old note 8 as I get that note sized screen but it can still fit in women's jeans pockets (crucial as I don't carry a handbag). my biggest worry tho is reparability, I know the screen protector on the front has a tendency to crack over time and replacing it is not an easy process (thankfully the person I bought from had Samsung replace the original before sending it to me but still it's a worry). I suppose I just have to accept that this is not the type of phone I can keep using for 3+ years like my previous ones, tbh if it makes it 2 I'll be doing well. still for the price I paid I don't really mind, top of the line specs and a cool factor that'll impress more than the latest iPhone is pretty good for only £400, hopefully by the time it breathes it's last I'll be able to get a flip 5 for a good price and fingers crossed it'll be out of the early adopters phase by then.

I like the concept of folding smartphones a lot, but I wish they'd ditch the folding screen and make it two separate displays with a tiny line in between them (like dual monitors for a computer). Then have the software treat those two screens as one. Sure it's not as "cool", but it's a lot more practical, durable, and you get the same utility (plus probably at a _much_ cheaper price point). I've only seen one phone do it this way, and I don't recall it getting a lot of attention.

Also got a Flip3. Mine is now about 10 month old and shows deep scratches along the folding display part. It seems like the top layer plastic(display foil came off after 6 month of use) broke open. Rly sad because otherwise my Flip 3 proved to be pretty solid. Can't report a worn out hinge or any other signs of wear and tear. So i definitely consider to repair mine. Samsung typically gives you a new screen for 1/2 the typical repair cost(450€) if it breaks within the first year of purchase. 225€ still cheap compared to a whole display assemble

Same with me, mine is shows scratches, and I dont know why it was happened. I just flip and put it on my pocket, and when I opened it, I was shocked looking the scratches along the screen. Is that human error or defect from the product?

It will be interesting to see how this tech progresses over the next few years or so. We have a few of the Fold3 and 1 Flip (silicon case to keep from making much thicker). So far we have been quite happy with them, but did get coverage for damage. So far so good, all 4 devices are still working great even under heavy use. It will be hard to go back of course as I have integrated it with home, gaming, and work.
