I love that companies REFUSE to use screws to hold down the rear cover, but literally cover in the insides with screws and then glue the battery in place, where they use plastic clamps to cover a connector. It is like they know which parts will need to be replaced and have made those parts as hard/dangerous to replace as possible...
@osamu_90

Not trying to defend these practices, but you can't use screws to hold down the rear cover unless you fancy marketing a phone without water resistance (which I don't think is going to sell well at all).
@zetsubou3704

@@osamu_90 Uh almost every electronic appliance that needs proper water resistance is held together with screws and rubber gaskets, there is no need to glue shit shown, it's only done for aesthetics. It's definitely possible to just make a metal+glass back cover with a gasket (something like the iphones) to have screw holes for easier removal.

Hey hugh, certified samsung tachnician here. I love your videos and your extensive knowledge. I do have a tip for you, that grey/blue frc cable on the main board side that runs from the usb board to the main board is supposed to go over the plastic bracket for the wireless charging but under the coil itself. As a Licensed phone plumber,you did a great job repairing it
When you go to do the Flip 4 note that you may need to transfer the magnets from the original frame to the new one or the inner screen may go dark when turned on. I believe the hall sensor expects a certain magnet strength to function and there is no way to calibrate the preinstalled magnets to the sensor on the logic board.

Gotta love seeing these repairs. Very satisfying to watch. 😎👍
beautifully done with the battery removal! I would've been too scared to use a metal prying tool like you did. very impressive!
When lifting screens you should use a iflex opening tool or a quanli opening tool, that metal pry tool with the handle is far too thick and will increase your screen failure rate when lifting. You should also inject IPA into the edges of the display as these screens are not effected by it and the adhesive with heat and ipa will literally fall off. This is coming from a trained samsung tech that does accredited repairs.

just like "the cameraman never dies", ever repair video always ends in a successful repair, so good job mate.
Asurion repair tech here. Im not sure if it exactly applies, but for my job we did have to get Apple and Samsung certified to work on any phones, they've got a whole program and curriculum that 3rd party repair partners have to go by so we can do the job. There's also something called a WISE certification too, depending on what level of equipment/hardware you're required to repair. Hope this helps lol
Lovely work.. nicely done!
Well done! Great repair! 👌
I wonder if the seller meant "licensed technician" as in a technician from Samsung or a 3rd party technician that is licensed. Like from a shop that sells Samsung phones as well other phones

It's nice to see you have some hands on with this BEAST of a device. I adore mine and it's cool to see the internals. If you are going to sell it I'd recommend daily driving it for a bit since it's an amazing experience.
Thank you! Mine just broke (out of warranty), and I've been looking for repair videos. Everything I've found until this point was a review of getting their phone repaired... not what I was looking for... You saved me time of trying to do it myself. It's now $600 U.S. for the screen or $650 for a refurbished phone.... I'll just go with the new phone😅
Reminds me of the Mercedes EQS saying the hood may only be opened by a specialist workshop 😂

Even though the repairability cost of folding phones is really high and it's unnecessarily complicated tech, I just got the Fold4 with a pretty nice discount, since the shop is selling out their stock to stock up on Fold5's, and I gotta say, the multitasking capabilities and just usability alone on that huge screen is just amazing. And then you fold it in half and it fits in any pocket. It's just awesome and well worth the money I paid for it, which is about half it's original launch price.
Nice one, Hugh! Sweet discount!
Nice work, Hugh.
Very satisfying good work this is an awesome phone
Idk why i didnt subscribed to your channel. I really like your work and your videos helped me to repair my iphone x myself. Hehe now i am happy to keep this phone for a little while more.
You sir are a Samsung Surgeon, wow I was amazed.
Great job! Congrats.
While it might have 18 months warranty left on it, Samsung's flip phone warranty (Samsung Flip and Fold are in this category) doesn't cover the screen in any way, so any type of screen damage either accidental or manufacturer's defects have to be paid in full by the customer, unless you take out an extended warranty of sorts which in most cases costs far more than a screen replacement
Good job! It must be great feeling to power up first time after all that.
Very nice fix!
What a beauty… I can only wish for working on a foldable one day
You did such a good job fixing it I really want to purchase it from you. Not sure how that would work, so good job!
I was also going to bid on this phone but decided not to bother at the last minute. Good video.
Nicely made instructional video! I take it the differences to the fold 3/4 models will be marginal. May give it a shot due to a damaged inner fold display. Thanks for the hard work.
while that phone definitely wasnt touched by a licensed tech, samsung license0s do exist. Asurion, the US largest phone insurance providers paid for mine as well as my apple certification. The different screw behind the screen isnt a screw holding in the plastic cover. it holds the sim tray in place. easy to keep separate if you lay your screws out in order. i usually throw a couple thin strips of double sided tape on the back of the battery to ensure it doesnt loosen in the future with exposure to heat. i would also recommend an AOD jig, makes opening most samsungs a dream. otherwise, excellent video as usual.
I find it really funny that a guy who'se gluing the screen together with some stuff he bought at the hardware store projects this much confidence about his professionalism.

good job on the repair, I am surprised you can even get parts and that changing the display doesn't brick the device.
Another outstanding video you make it look so easy
You are amazing! 👍
I'm pretty impressed.
The reason I like Samsung is that their replacement parts are at least easy to source - often expensive, but at least genuine. I do find myself wary of them changing that in future with some of the things we've seen them do though.
So. There is a "WISE" certification. Which there are 2 levels. Software and hardware. It means nothing. You can be a Samsung, Apple, and Google Certified. With this Fold, I've seen this countless times. The inner screen protector starts to peel, so the customer tries to peel the protector off. Resulting in them digging too deep and destroying the screen. Samsung actually had to change the outer display adhesive as no technician could get it off with their provided display removal tool. Unfortunately my store broke quite a bit of them.
Great repair job. When I begun with my electronic work, first as hobby and then as career, most of the devices I worked on used vacuum tubes. Successive technological transitions were painless though; but when we arrived to smartphone and tablets, the single thing I couldn't wrap my head around was... The use of glue to keep the devices together. Use of glue has been despised for generations of design engineers. If we had our way, all smartphones would have a 3 mm bezel all around, hiding the screws utilised to keep the screen and the back cover attached to the frame. I guarantee that no-one would complain of that bezel. Glue - blah!
@xonor13
11 ай бұрын
Yup, glue is the worst design decision for repairability, but is the cheapest for production. I miss the good old days when iPhones used to have the bezel you mentioned, that were held together by two screws. When the screws were removed you could easily suction cup the screen off popping the retention clips. However, nothing beats the age when you could just pop the back off by hand in less than a second to replace your battery.

Or... Screws in the back.
Awesome repair, a lot of parts this time 😁

You can use IR ceramic heat plate - it does not need direct contact. One like they use as bottom heater in cheap PCB hot air stations. Just stick the thermocouple on the metal part near battery not to overheat it.

Also, that smirk at 8:41, you silly.
I use to work for a major US based repair company that is partnered with Samsung, and am certified/licensed to repair their phones, so yes we exist. Also yes, we never remove the inner screen, Samsung does not repair that screen and will usually just replace the phone or it will require a complete body/frame replacement that houses the inner screen.
love your video
As a Licensed KZread viewer myself l think he is legit.
I love hugh Jefferies!
3:20 i have noticed that you sometimes cause damage because you use the wrong tools. When folding the copper back, use a soft tool or even your fingers, you wont leave grooves from the pick
Very interesting. I wonder how much they're investing in the search for even stronger adhesives. The trivial saving for doing it yourself is another insult from Samsung, unless their technicians are paid a pittance.
