One thing not mentioned is the new hinge, despite folding almost flat, allows for a larger radius on crease when folded. Meaning its not folded as sharply so might be less prone to cracks at the fold

I have this phone, and I'm very dissapointed with the blurry selfie camera. Its like an iphne 6 camera. Regardless of setting ls , no way to change that. Plus normal camera has issues to focus . So frustrated with an 1800 phone

So let me get this straight. To switch from a _Samsung_ _Fold_ 3 to a _Samsung_ _Fold_5 you have to go through a cumbersome process in order to get back where you were before, while for years now if you buy a new iphone you put it next to the old one and press a button. And people wonder why iphones are so successful. SMH

@@Quettesh no, but the process is much simpler than what Linus says in the video. Thanks to icloud password manager logging back in is very simple. Only hazzle is banking apps that require device IMEI/SN authentication and have to send you an actual letter with a one-time pin.

Finally! Yes! People like how "cool" onscreen fingerprints are, but the side fingerprints are WAY better, especially from a practicality perspective. I wish more phones would go back to side fingerprints.

I dunno. I moved to a phone with an under screen one and it's so much better. I barely touch the lock button anymore, I don't have to fumble or anything. I touch the screen, it's always the same spot, bam, it's unlocked .

i miss rear fingerprints tbh. coolest feature of my old S9 was i could swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to pull down my notifications tray without having to reach all the way to the top of the phone

That microscopic pieces of glass is a hell to clean up and after that you're itchy for weeks forward, because even if you don't see it, it's everywhere. "That was not the smart way to do it" -- is kind of an understatement -- that should've been done outdoors.

Love the brightness measures. Hopefully you include more data about displays in the future such as HDR brightness, color accuracy, etc. Great stuff!

About the cracking screen. I have a Fold 3. I think it was specified in the manual that you must not remove the screen protector on your own and that it provides protection to the screen. It should be replaced by Samsung. That being said, every Samsung center I went into offered changing the screen protector as a service. It costs 30 USD and they have some sort of machine or tool to do it specifically for this device. It is so precise that it actually looked better installed than the factory one. The factory one I noticed was a tiny bit misplaced and was touching the up inner bezzel, where the screen protector they changed was spot on. I have changed my screen protector twice in a Samsung center so far. It started peeling off just like yours. The other great thing is that it takes literally 10-15 minutes for them to do it right there on the spot. My device is nearly 2 years old now and it shows zero signs of screen damage. I guess the screen protector keeps it from folding too sharpli on the screen and crack.

​@@martonlerant5672 Not really, he removed a screen protector and never reapplied one of his own, going naked on a basically plastic display. You can also see him never using a case and the phone has a lot of scratches there, revealing that he isn't particularly careful with it either. At the end of the day, it's a screen protector. It's a layer of plastic on plastic. And let's not forget, Samsung has no particular incentive to make their screen protectors particularly good to begin with. They are known for wanting to double, triple and quadruple bill you with all kinds of fees, services and warranties. They have every incentive structure in place to make the default screen protector be good enough to last a few months, but not good enough to last through the planned obsolescence of the device lifecycle. If you read up on how to apply a third party one, you'll be happy to put on the sheet of plastic of your choice on top of your plastic phone screen. Heck, you can run multiple layers too for extra protection. I ran that for over half a year until the first party screen protector started bubbling up, prompting me to replace it with just my own layer of matte screen protection.

Linus, there is a trick to getting the Folds to lay flat again. I discovered it a few years ago on the galaxy fold subreddit and have been doing it since for my Fold 2 and now 3. Take the sticky side of a sticky note and slide it into the hinge and slowly slide it in and move it up and down the hinge. It'll pull out all kinds of pocket crud and dust. Repeat on other side of hinge and it'll feel as good as new in just a few minutes.

Or just color block it, it will be ugly but you can't see what's behind the color for example black. Because blurring is great for photos or still image but for a video you still can guess what's behind the blur from the hand movements or anything that moves in that blurred section. *Edit for can't

I always value Linus' take on phone reviews as he loves the Note 9 and daily drives the Fold 3, two of my favourite devices ever. Sadly my Fold 3 started showing microcracks 10 months in, the screen was replaced within the warranty and I just couldn't live with the anxiety of the screen breaking down by its own out of warranty. I loved the Fold 3 but I'm not seeing myself buying one in the next 2-3 years. Sticking to the S23 for now.

I'm on my third fold 5. First one broke in the crease on the first fold and the second one had cracked streaks across the inner screen. And holy hell I would recommend people AWAY from this product just because of how hard Samsung fights tooth and nail to deny warranty/RMAs for any reason even with Samsung Care+ If you're gonna buy this phone, get it with a carrier or trade in with a warranty, insurance (not with AT&T because their insurance deductible is basically the MSRP of the entire phone -.-) AND Samsung Care+. You will need the double coverage. These phones don't last

I switched from an iPhone 11 Pro Max to the fold 5 as my first foldable, and I absolutely love it. Samsungs pre-order incentives are crazy.

My z fold 4 is a year in and still rocking the factory screen protector, and it's still doing great. I'm honestly surprised, but very happy. I have faith in the 5. I'm also notoriously hard on phones, even when I'm trying not to.

Same also just over a year with my Fold 4. Tho I had one warranty repair on it cuz the hinge wasn't going past like 80% open. Well, being on warranty Samsung repaired it and since then... Nothing. I also have the official standing cover with Pen. I dropped it 2 times. Nothing. BUT being a person that's not buying screen protectors anymore, the Frontdisplay is a bit scratched already. Nothing distracting or serious. The inner Display or rather the factory screen protector has also a tiny bit of scratches. Little tiny ones. Well, to another year with my Fold. I'm a fan of small handy phones (ironic, I know), so something like a Zenfone 10 is actually kinda attractive to me and I don't know yet if I'm gonna stay another 2 years on my Fold 4 or if I'm gonna switch to another one. You can be sure if Sony brings a proper Compact back that I am one of the first to sell my Fold 4 for it.

I've got a Note 10 I bought 4 years ago and am still using the factory screen protector. It's pretty worn at this point. But it's protected my from various drops and drags with no screen damage as of yet. Dunno if the folds are wildly different but their screen protectors at Samsung are super solid in my experience

@@bacphan7582 its not that it stops working, but it has a screen protector and they don't tend to last forever. I find that on previous phones that I would have to replace the (aftermarket) screen protector about once a year as they either get scratched or start to lift up at the edges. so far after a year, the inner screen protector is showing zero signs of wear. the front screen has a nasty scratch though, should have got a screen protector for that. my only real complaint with it is the coating of the frame marks easily, not really an issue, just would be nice if it would have held up better.

And then he killed the Fold3 by soaking it in pool water for 4 hours lol

9:20 As an iphone and android user I can agree. iOS is just fluid and works really well. I prefer android for the emulation and sideloading. Also, a big DEX user!

I like this kind of video for short circuits, like an unboxing/micro review of the product (with labs' data). While the video is entertaining, getting insightful information about the device is excellent, too.

What I really like is how he didn't use the Fold 4 in any of the comparisons (the direct previous generation which is what every reviewer uses for comparison). This is probably because there's no difference between them and his Samsung sponsor would hate it if he showed that, which is why he's using a Fold 3 💀

As far as the micro cracks, the new hinge is supposed to have a larger tear drop fold which should help. When I compared my 3 to 5, you can definitely see the screen fold more tightly on the 3, even though it had the larger gap.

also, youre not supposed to remove the screen protector. samsung offers a one time free replacement of it. Most, if not all, complaints ive seen about the cracks in the fold, were from people that removed their screenprotector. Ive had my flip3 for 1,5 years now, still looks as good as new.

​@@FrankOnline007I've never removed my screen protector, but it did peel/unstick down the crease, and then cracked down the crease before I had a chance to get it replaced. It's an issue on 2, 3, and 4.

my fold 2 and 3 both had inner screen cracking , I just sent it in to repair both the inner and outer screens. The battery in my 3 also gets super hot and doesnt last nearly as long either. Im still not considering switching for the 5, not enough of an upgrade still.

Why do you even use them? (Honest question). All those MAJOR problems for what? Extra screen with an AWKWARD aspect ratio? Why not iPhone Pro Max or Samsung S-series Ultra? I have mine and after 3 years NO ISSUES. I’m going for upgrades this year, but not because I have to…

My Fold3 has the exact same no longer laying flat problem. Also the inside screen protector decided it no longer wanted to remain on the device a year or so back so it took a hike also. Also same problem with the screen cracking. I don't think it matters if the protector is on or not its just one of them things that happens over time with this plastic glass they are using sadly.

The fingerprint sensor on the fold five in insanely fast. Love it to bits.

Fold 4 here, year old, using without case, survived several beaches this year, everything factory still. I don't mind narrow outer screen, it's great for one-handed use. Inner screen is great for multitasking and media consumption.

Daily driving a Fold 5 myself, and I love it. Especially the fingerprint sensor as Linus said, so much nicer than the ultrasonic one on my last phone (Note 10+). I expected to regret the purchase, financially it would make more sense to buy a regular phone like a Pixel 7/A, and then get a tablet, but it's just so convenient for a job that gives a lot of time to sit on a phone and carrying a tablet everywhere just isn't as convenient.

Financially it wasnt a smart decision since you can get a fold 4 for more than 2 Times less lol

App launch is storage speed bound. I believe both are using the same UFS module made by Samsung, which explains the similar launch time. CPU and RAM speed still matters, but not by much.

I appreciate the graph positions being locked in the graphs.

For the labs data, I would much prefer to see phones tested at the same empirical ‘nits’ rather than brightness percentages. Same for charging speed, a unit of mAh/hour is much more useful than ‘what percentage a phone charged to’. Except for that, great video. Loved the comment about selfie smoothing haha

Look the fact remains that phone battery capacity has gotten so outrageous that bare numbers don't do justice anymore. DO with that info whatever you like.

I'm curious about the Fingerprint Sensor comments. I moved from a Pixel 7 (optical sensor) to an S23 (Ultrasonic sensor) and it was a huge upgrade for me. Far more accurate, and I didn't have to wait for the 'illumination' button to appear. Most times the S23 has scanned my print before I realize if I've actually nailed the sensor location.

Yep, no idea were linus pulled that from. Ultrasonic readers have been way more reliable and way faster for me since the beginning. The area of scan was the issue with the earlier models but the newer ones have resolved it pretty well.

Fingerprint readers on samsung devices have been near flawless and instant for a long time. Especially the side mounted ones. The underscreen ones can be more finicky but I think its due to finger placement on a large surface rather than consistent placement on a small button.

This video is great for me! I too am still using Galaxy Fold 3 and I just ordered a sandstone coloured TicWatch 5 Pro, so it's excellent to hear that I really don't need to upgrade my phone yet - it saves me a lot of money!

I was trying to think about what was missing in this video, and it was background music. 3:32 Some additional litle AE effects for labeling devices, especially when comparing them so closely when they look identical would be a good add too.

What's with the background hum of the audio? Edit: It seems to start at 2:41 and goes away at 7:45

I barely use the S pen even when my device included it. The Fold kind of implies that it should have it, but I'm fine without it

I don’t know if this was filmed and edited before or after the big reset, or any combo of film/edit before/after. The vibe is good, the pacing perfect, much more like the great LTT vids of old

My z fold 3 still folds fine. Doesnt have a case no screen protectors. Still going strong, still folding flat and being used daily. Love this phone wont go back to a non folding phone

Yeah, Mine still folds flat but I do have the same problems with the screen cracking. Took about 14 months for the protector to separate on the hinge, kept it on for a bit but the noise was really getting to me so took it off, maybe 2 months after that I noticed the cracks.

I gotta say that half (more than?) the reason that I upgraded from the Fold 3 to the Fold 5 was the "micro" cracking screen. I hadn't realized just how not-flat my fold 3 was unfolding until I saw the Fold 5. I agree about the fingerprint sensor on the button - way better.

As an owner of fold 2 i am actually seeing what looks like slits starting to form where the crease is. I like this technology but who knows how long this phone will last for still. Cause if it cracks in the middle thats gonna be a time for a new phone. Also battery life i have noticed is deffinatley starting to get worse. Before could go all day now its having to sit on my charger at work . Such is life.

3 years of folding - that's about it. Longer than I personally kept any phone from like 2010

I can’t believe he thinks the Samsung’s under-screen ultrasonic fingerprint reader is slow! I’ve never had a problem with it.

I think the screen protector on the Fold 3, prevented the screen from folding too much when closed. My fold's 3 screen also started cracking in the middle when I removed the screen protector and it stopped after I put on a new one and didn't show any new cracks after that. From what I've seen on the new Fold 5's hinge animations is that the screen is not folded as much as it used to in the previous version.

Yeah in a rough economy I wouldn't take the risk of seeing visible wear and tear after only a year. My Note 20 Ultra is still going strong and even though I plan on upgrading to S24 Ultra next year I feel like I could go one more year. I like foldables but as long as I have my tab s9 and a good high end phone I just don't feel the need.

It's not really a rough economy though? Inflation is coming down, growth is up, unemployment is low for NA/EU. Maybe you're in the UK or Africa, but for most viewers of LTT the economy is okay. Not amazing but not bad.

My Fold 3 screen protector peeled as well and then the cracking in the crease also happened. I put an armor screen protector on it to prevent further degradation and that helped. I now own the Fold 5.

Your Fold3 is still in great shape. My Fold4, which I've been using for almost a year and a half, recently experienced a minor drop incident. After that, the phone started turning off by itself without any apparent reason. I noticed it would only turn off when I folded or unfolded the device from the small screen to the large screen, or when it was unplugged during charging. I decided to visit a repair shop for a check-up. The technician explained that a common issue with Samsung Fold devices is the internal cable located in the middle fold, which tends to get damaged with each fold. This cable is crucial as it handles functions like Wi-Fi, audio, charging, and the screen. The repair cost me around $85, but they mentioned that the fix might not be long-lasting.

Scratches on the crease part of the screens is due to the gap though. Small bits of dust from your pocket go inside the folded phone and end up accumulating in the crease, where you will mindlessly wipe them next time you open the phone and after a while, it scratches the screen on the crease. No gap on the fold and flip 5 is actually a great improvement for the longevity of those phones.

I have a fold 4 and im actually worried about them making the inside screen gapless. The gap and bumpers prevent the screen from pinching on anything and getting scratched or broken. It might be the single feature allowing me to own one running my own construction business.

That gap is what gets dust and debris on the inside, leading to the screen protector peeling, leading to the screen cracking down the crease. This has been an issue with all of the folds so far

I pre ordered the 3 when it was announced, been loving it since. My screen protector did start to de-laminate but I was able to get it replaced on warranty, however it has since come off completely and those cracks in the folding part are starting to come in, its been a tough phone though I haven't used a case and the worst damage its got is a couple tiny scrapes on the edge metal and the bottom camera rim lost it's paint, which is much better then my previous phones.

@@MaxCaud Linus slams it shut, I'm careful and close it slowly. I asked my co-workers if they could see anything wrong with my screen and no one could till I pointed the small cracks out, it sounds bad but if you treat it right it'll last, besides even if I do loose the center screen I'll still have the outer screen so it's not like I'm loosing the ability to use my phone if one screen breaks. If you can see the value then maybe its for you but if not, nothing wrong with that just stick with what you know.

Switching phones from Samsung to Samsung is no longer a hassle and it hasn't been for a long time Make sure everything's backed up with Google photos and your Google account those are two simple settings and then use Samsung Smart switch.. use a password manager and just re-log into all of your apps

@@NotThatHomeless exactly that's why I'm a little confused how LTT more specifically Linus is kind of preaching the opposite thing as a tech guy he should be teaching and preaching how easy it is to upgrade your phone these days versus how it used to be

As I usually say, I much much prefer the fingerprint sensor being on the power button than on screen. And it's even faster on my Poco X3 Pro than even what we see in the Fold 3/5 they do show the second time!

A bit of feedback on your performance graphs: when it comes to emulation you should have what resolution scale you have if any, for example native resolution for the game cube would be 720x480, so a 4x native would be 2,880x1,920. this is important because even my phone can run Gamecube but only at 1x native.

about the colors of the graphs you are using: While unusual tor my LTT-Trained eyes, they will probably fit for a mostly dark themed style pretty good over time. At the same time, I do have concerns about color blind people, especially those, who can only see "grayscale" (well, more brightness, but it seems very same to me). While I am no expert in any form, these colors do seem more similar to each other than the kontrast rich ones you used previously.

@@windslightly9117 Flip and Fold phones are not dustproof, so dust accumulates inside the hinge. I had about 6 Flips for repair and some of them could no longer be opened flat, so I took an ordinary household vacuum cleaner with a narrow plastic nozzle and vacuumed from behind, opening and closing the hinge while vacuuming and it worked.

you can get a free screen protector replacement for fold devices under warrantly, and out of warranty its $20 USD. they dont sell u the protector, but u take it to the store and they replace it (or u can ship it in i guess). I just got it done this week for my fold 3 that started to bubble/peel in Canada.

It actually unlocks a bit faster then it shows here (for me), before the screen turns fully on you already hear the unlock sound (using the power button version)

Definitely slower since with power button version you can have the finger on while pulling it out of your pocket. Under screen requires another second or two for placement.

​@@fynkozari9271the amount of money lost due to a lack of R&D which caused the fires, I highly doubt it. Bit weird you're sitting around waiting for it to happen when other manufacturers devices have had it happen a lot more recently. You need to get over your hatred hard-on for Samsung.

I use my fold's 4 display about 80% of the time. It's totally usable, pretty awesome in one hand operation.

Juts got my Fold 5 yesterday (coming from the Fold 3) and got a good laugh at your video because I said many of the same things, lol! My 3 "cracked" down the center too right at 2 years but still worked fine. I was just telling the guys that I want to just get it over with and slide this new 5 across the parking lot because now I'm walking around like I'm carrying a newborn again and I HATE it lol! My 3 was battleworn and it just worked without worry. Gotta say though... really digging the extra space on the front screen, it isn't much but for me it made a HUGE difference. Also loving the Samsung SPen case after coming from the bigger/older Spigen/SPen case. The phone feels lighter, thinner and less bulky... ill take it! While it is subject to change, like the day I got my Fold 3 I still feel the same... that I absolutely love these phones and can't see myself going with any other design. For me, the Folds are just perfect and they simply keep getting better.

I've been daily driving my Fold 2 since release. Awesome devices and hope we get internal S-pen 🤞

Something to note is Samsung removed the feature to drop down the notifications/quick settings by sliding on the fingerprint sensor. There's still hope that it may come back in a software update, but it also might be a hardware limitation (the new button definitely feels cheaper)

one of the best features of the old pixels was fingerprint reader on the back so you can drop down just by pulling your finger on the reader. #1 featuer I would like back because I cant go back to moving ur hand every time you want to swipe down anymore...

Love my fold 4, its wayyy better than the fold 3 in day to day use. Fold 5 just seems like the fold 4 but slightly diffrent.

This is such a useful review. Really appreciate how in detail you compare it to not only the gen before but 2 generations back. I'm someone who will buy an older out of date phone second hand so it's good to know if I am missing out on anything significant enough to spend a few extra hundred £. The answer is usually no, and this video really shows that. Thanks again, I'll be getting the fold three when my current phone finally kicks the bucket

I've been daily driving the Fold5 since August 5th and I'm very happy with the hinge, chaging speed, and brighter inner display. The battery has been better than the Fold4 I had before, which surprised me. The thing that annoys me the most is the lack of decent cases and the absolute garbage S-pen!

I don't own, nor have I had a chance to examine a 5 in person, but I am wondering if this thing is a fingerprint magnet. 3 out of 4 surfaces are screens, which is a lot of territory to manage in addition to dirt and lint getting in the hinges.

I *really* wanted a Fold 4, so I traded in my Pixel 6 Pro for one. I had it for like a week. I found that I just didn't open it enough to justify just how small the outside display is. Or how fat it was in my pocket. I went to a Iphone 14 Pro Max and haven't looked back. Since I have a Samsung tablet, I didn't lose access to all of my Google Play apps, but having to start over with the App Store was a bit of an inconvenience. I'm happy the Folds exist, but they aren't for me.

I'm the opposite. I open mine constantly. I only really use the outside screen for 4 things. 1. quickly checking notifications to see if its something I need to address 2. Making phone calls 3. shopping lists (but only when i'm at the supermarket, not when making the lists) 4. track control on spotify I never had the fold 1, but that screen probably would have been enough for me honestly.
