I love the split display being different than the radio display. I like my KW TS990 but it mirrors the displays so don't use that feature much. Plus the Elecraft has much higher resolution so might consider the change.

Eric, long time Elecraft fan. I have heard that the A/D converter is the same as the Icom 7610. I believe the 7610 has 2 of those A/D converter. I am a believer in Elecraft, but I am wondering what the value add is to sped the extra $$ on the K4 over the Icom this time?

Receive on one frequency, transmit on another frequency. This is often done on 40 meters with Europeans and North American stations. Also it is often used on dxpeditions in huge pileups.

Blocking dynamic range is just one metric to judge a radio by-- Elecraft will be releasing a superhet module for people who need the highest possible blocking dynamic range. Super deep blocking dynamic range usually comes at the expense of making the pan adapter and impulse blanker less useful (because they're blocked by the narrow front end filters). There is no free lunch.

£4K too much? Hmm. For that level of performance? Icom want 10 large for their flagship. A Yaesu FTDX101 then? Comparable on price sure, but I know what I'd rather have. It's out of my league in terms of what I find justifiable, but objectively no way is it too expensive. I wouldn't knock it on price alone because excellence is never cheap, and with Elecraft I do find them fairly "spendy" anyway (which is an understatement). Lets wait and see how Sherweng rates it before trashing it on price alone.

This isn't comparable to the 7851, more like the 7610. So a £3K Icom rig against a £4K Elecraft.

I would buy it today, now I’m beginning to wonder if it will ever be a reality. People are getting tired of waiting and excuses. I know 2020 was terrible but a company should have stock piled the parts if they knew they were going to build this. It could have been designed years in advance, poor management and business practices will bankrupt you. People will lose confidence in your company and product. May seem like I’m being harsh but it’s the reality of the business world we live in.

Actually if you include / order the superhet module for near strong signal / contest like environments you will be above the $5000 price tag including the antenna tuner. The only thing you have demonstrated here with your comment is that you are not familiar with the cost of a top tier contest grade transceiver. You could have equally made your comment on a Flex, Yaesu, Kenwood or Icom video. This is the price you pay and a lot more in the case of other manufacturers for a high end contest/DX grade radio. Clearly this isn't the rig for you. I would suggest looking at one of the Japanese entry level HF transceivers if you think this price is too high. Something in the price range of ~$900 to $1200. All of the big HF transceiver manufactures make fine radios.

  • @KL3NCH

In fairness, PF only said that at the price level- no thanks. I didn't get any sense that he was trashing the radio, but the way it was written hinted at that. My bad as the kids say. Moreover, unless you have a top notch antenna, it's very unlikely you'd notice much difference between an "entry level" and a state of the art job? On my gutter mounted doublet, my FT818 and Icom IC-7200 both hear anything my KX3 can hear. Clearly fouf grand would be wasted.

@@normkirk65 It happens that I'm having 'fun' already with my transceiver, am I supposed to have more fun for $4,000 ? I can hear most things others can hear, am I supposed to hear more ? What I can't hear doesn't worry me, least of all Contesting. It's a nice transceiver, but not nice enough for the money. That's All Folks.

@@paulfrancis8836 You are completely missing the point of why a transceiver at this level demands a premium price. It's not about the receiver sensitivity, please do your research... that nut was cracked decades ago and all transceivers based on the typical noise floor of an HF antenna setup are sensitive enough to hear weak signals in the later part of the 20th century and especially in the 21st century. What you are paying for here is dynamic range blocking, along with a ton of other bleeding edge features. It's easy to make a receiver sensitive and it's easy to make a receiver block strong signals near your passband, but what costs the big bucks is to make a receiver that does both! Sensitive and blocks strong signals to your passband. This is just one point here... Do your research before you demonstrate that you haven't done your research by posting 4 word responses. So yeah, if you don't operate in conditions with really loud adjacent signals then you won't care so much. There are those that love to have the feature set that makes contesting and DX'ing much more enjoyable. We have the budget and will pay for the bleeding edge. It's great that all the big three JA manufactures along with Elecraft in this case are pushing the bleeding edge. To just say "at $4000, no thanks" just again demonstrates that you don't understand why there is a market for these high end Transceivers. No commentary etc... it's too expensive, no thanks? You can say this about anything... that McLaren 900K super car... at 900K, no thanks, I only need to go 80mph and get there in 25 seconds? I could just as easily say, Icom IC-7300 poor dynamic blocking range and leave it at at that without doing the research to understand why an IC-7300 fits into the ICOM HF lineup where it does for the price. The IC-7300 is a really great transceiver for the price, but there is a reason that an ICOM IC-8751 costs $12000 and Flex / Electraft transceivers can command a $5000 / $6000 price tag. We are fortunate that there is a high end market, because the bleeding edge features trickle down to the entry level radios years later. It's a win, win for the Amateur market. Rational research and understanding why a product cost what it does based on the production and research required beats the grumpy old man response of 'at $4000, no thanks', any day of the week.
