For the same Price, better get a Street Triple ! Which is the current best bike in that category. Frame and motor are insanly good (Moto 2...) , and the suspension is top notch. MT09 is super fun, dont get me wrong. But if I Can have only one, the Street Triple is so.good stock for commuting, canyon carving and track than I could not chose another one 😮

I own an acoustics consultancy and we often conduct noise testing against the Aussie design guide for vehicle exhaust noise. That exhaust is interesting. Standards require measurement at 45 degrees to the side of the exhaust outlet. With a horizontal exhaust, the measurement point is 45 degrees off-axis which is only a couple of dB quieter than on-axis. With a downward facing exhaust the measurement point is at 90 degrees to its axis which is typically up to 8 dB quieter (maybe 5 with ground reflection). The exhaust can therefore be louder and still comply at the measurement and bystander locations. Same goes for the amplifier grills because the measurement points are lower to the ground. Very clever, Yamaha. Beats the way Harley cheats their way around the noise emission standards!

@@whitejtw I have read that Willy Davidson came out some years ago and said they insert small washers in the header pipe to choke the bike during homologation testing and can tune it to every country they sell bikes in. In Australia it's a 50km/h drive-by in third gear and throttle roll-on. The bikes meet our noise standards. The washer is removed at the first service and the bikes properly tuned.

SP model adds supermoto-ABS mode for those skids, backing into corners if you want. Besides that, Stylema brakes and increased suspension capability. Otherwise, I don't know if SP is worth the price hike. I'd modify suspension to my own liking anyway, and I would fit it with BETTER shock and cartridges than what comes on the SP model. I really don't ride to the extent of backing in to corners (even though it looks super cool and would be a fun skill to have). The XSR900 GP is the one that gets the '24 updates (electronics, TFT, switchgear, suspension tweaks, etc). The standard XSR will have to wait another year to come in line with the MT. Value for money? Yes, the best in the 890cc category. Probably the most reliable too. I'd say the Z900 is probably potentially the second most reliable, also a great value, powerful, but really paired back in terms of technology (a lot of tech these days is not really tangible, more emotional and mental in practice).

The left-control switch design is awesome and it feels like we have easily manage through the settings in the dashboard. Besides, if comparing to Ducati Hypermotard 950, I would pick the Ducati because it’s v-twin engine and the look of it given that there’s no CC or immediate blinking lights stop…

Not really - an MT-03 or MT-07 would be a more sensible idea while you improve your riding. Even the MT-07 has the tendency to pop the front up 🤪

I got a Kawasaki Z400 as my first street bike and I'm glad I did. It still scared me when I first started riding it and then over the course of a year I've pretty much mastered it. Still very fun but it doesn't scare me anymore and I like being a little scared😆. To tell you the truth it's not whether you can handle the power of the MT09 in regular conditions because most people could handle this bike as a first bike in regular conditions. It's in high stress, emergency, or think fast conditions where it will matter. I've rode the z400 for a year and I'm thinking about upgrading to this bike now. But if I would have gotten the mt09 first I would probably be dead or seriously injured right now. Also you WILL drop your first bike. Do you really want that to happen with a bike that will cost at least $13,000 out the door? Or even worse wreck it and have costly repairs or even worse total it and still owe the bank all that money? And last but not least as a new rider bike insurance is much more expensive than for people who are experienced. And the more displacement and value of the bike the higher the insurance. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Well, as an MT 09 firts gen owner I have to disagree in some points. Some of us really got this bike because I was some kind of supermotard when it came to ergos and riding but with a lower maintenance and more comfortable on daily basis, it was special a different approach to a naked. Now they took the bike into the same filosofy as the other bikes on the segment in part I think because of the magazine reviews but not based on the MT 09 owners. Still a great machine, don't get me wrong but sometimes being unperfect is the way to go on the riding experience.

CBR650R is a good street bike, easy to ride, with smooth linear power. The leg ergos are a bit cramped imho, due to the accessible lower seat height. Obviously, an inline-4 649cc won't punch like an 890cc triple, but that depends on your riding style.

I just sold my gen 3 MT09 and bought a Triumph T120, MT09 is just getting too uncomfortable, time to chill, also that CP3 engine noise drives me crazy even at 70mph, sounds like it’s going to explode, I prefer the MT10 to the MT09, the extra weight means you can’t throw it around as much but it’s so much more stable at higher speeds on the highway, and the engine sounds epic

It looks amazing! I think it is the BEST looking generation. I liked everything about the third gen aside from the transformer cyclops headlight. I was back and forth conflicted about that headlight. Sometimes I thought it was okay, other times not so much. And it was WAY TOO HIGH. There is a lowering kit that brought it down by 3 inches which helped significantly but it was still an odd headlight. This 4th gen though? PERFECTION. The headlight front end is lower and the lines smoothly transition into the tank. Those lines then flow all the way into the seat and bodywork around it. I like that the LED 'eye slices' don't look too much like eyes, I actually dislike all the 'eyes' headlights on modern bikes. This has more of an Iron Man mask look, the eyes are still there, but more sci fi and less blatant googly eyes.

I'm stuck between this or an R1... Very different bikes I know but I feel like I should just get the R1 as I won't have the opportunity to buy a brand new one in a few years and the price of them is probably going to go nuts like the R6! So maybe R1 now, MT09 later (don't want MT10, prefer the triple sound for the naked bike).

Nice review & it's a great bike but why can't Yamaha make the MT range look half decent. It looks better than the last one but that's really not hard is it. It just doesn't flow. I don't know who in the Yamaha design department is coming up with this look & then which manager is signing off on it. It's looks aren't a deal breaker for me but equally it's not a selling point at all either. If I bought one, it'd be despite them not because of. Obviously looks are subjective but I'd really struggle to part with 10k, which is a great price, if I'm not really sold on the looks.
