I was in the market for a coupe. The Rolls Royce spectre is a total length of 215.5 inches. Which is a little too long for me since my garage isn't that deep, So i went with a 2013 Honda Civic coupe instead.

Luxury is almost always a matter of scarcity; have vs have nots. When touchscreens stopped becoming exotic and started becoming the standard, capitalizing on rich people's nostalgia was a small but powerful play.

@@thebitlot There is probably more to it as Rolls Royce didn’t use more screens when they were less common. For example, screens offer a lot of visual information, but I think they are more laggy than knobs/buttons. And then even if they aren’t I think it’s normal to associate a screen with more lag. This mentally makes a screen seem less luxury feeling as it doesn’t just work and is more complicated. Classic luxury cars weren’t complicated, they were just designed to do what they do well. Also screens lack a tactile experience. I think luxury is mainly about how it makes the customer feel, it’s about quality over quantity. Screens offer quantity more than quality if it comes to using it for driver controls. Also information overload can cause anxiety, maybe that’s a reason they didn’t put temperature numbers on the heating knobs. You don’t need a number to tell you whether you are too warm or too cold, your body would just know.

@@legioner9eh it’s doesn’t bother me that much, RR has always been more about smoothness and torque than having any real connection with the engine. They actually did their best to insulate you from the engine and make it almost a nonexistent, silent part of the car. Knowing that, it actually surprises me that they haven’t gone electric sooner. Though I guess they are limited to what EV tech BMW has.

Doug, I have been around these cars a long time. FYI. The ac vents are called "Eyeballs" the pulls "Organ Stops" both have been around in the exact form since the 1st Silver Shadow in 65.66. Great video about a car few will ever see let only own. FYI: 0ver 80% of all Rolls-Royce cars are short term leased!

With a name like Rolls Royce, you don't do it until you can do it right. Toyota is currently staying out of the EV work truck right now for that reason.

26:02 one of the main reasons it costs $520,000.00 is not because they used the "best" materials, it is because the people who buy them WANT to pay more than anyone else. It's perceived value. I worked for a cabinet company and they made high end kitchen cabinets. We installed one, $67,000.00. The neighbour came over, saw it, pulled the boss aside "I want one too, but I want it to cost $78,000. I don't care what you do, that's what I want to spend" it's called bragging rights. "I paid $5000 for the starry night emblem on the dashboard".

Yep. That's why "most people cant feel that 1%". Because it doesn't exist. This car has the same leather you'll find in the S class, and in the G Wagon, and in the 7 series, because there's only so much you can make out of raw materials. Hell, it looks like they aren't even bothering to make them look different to BMWs anymore. People that buy these buy them because they want to say they paid 500k for a Rolls Royce, they dont want a 100k 7 series. The RR badge is what you pay for, and what makes it worth it for those who pay, is the fact that it's not a Mercedes badge.

I know a guy with a RR Cullinan and when we were speaking about it a couple weeks after he bought it, the first thing he mentioned was the price of his satin grey paint. £45,000. Once you have enough money you can justify these prices and it becomes something to brag about.

The paint on that car must be amazing because this is the very first time I ever seen Doug's tripod in the paint on any car he reviewed.

An excellent review and analysis, you captured the ethos of Rolls Royce. They don’t make cars, they are the purveyor of luxury goods. This side of the pond when discussing range, Rolls Royce explained they consulted their customers. The range is adequate because beyond it their customers would use either a private jet or helicopter. Though the most famous saying from Rolls Royce, they say “If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.”

The test cars that RR had of this model were so quiet, that people actually became sick driving them: the interplay between sound/vibration, how our eyes and inner ear perceive movement is a very tricky balancing act and the total absence of a certain level and type of NVH while driving can cause nausea, dizziness etc type issues. RR had to reintroduce certain sounds back into the car (not sure, but believe not all were audible) to fix the issue.

You gotta have the clock. Even if you don't bother seeing what time it is. It's just such a cool detail. I'd also hire a butler just to to open the door for me all the way.

RR asked about the low range said that when their customers travel any further, they use their planes.

Love that it has buttons instead of screens. I would never pay 500K for the car, but the buttons are a great touch.

A 5 year old Wraith in decent condition will set you back a minimum of $200,000. It's highly unlikely you'll find a Spectre for less than that in 2028. EVs are depreciating slower than ICEs.

I love the praise of touch-sensitive shortcut button previews and an iDrive dial whose center doesn't spin as amazing RR luxury touches. My 2009 3 Series walked so the Spectre could run.

Actually the feature of the radio stations touch panel in 10:40 is a really old one and was used in BMW e90 in 2005. It's a fun little feature in an old car.

There's something about the piano black trim that I thought was a trend but I'll admit, Rolls-Royce did a fantastic job with the interior design to ensure that the art is crafted with time.

I was drive testing the Dacia Spring the other week (which is one of the cheapest battery powered cars in Europe) and one of the first things I noticed was this same gauge but mirrored, it immediately made me think "well this must be on the opposite side of the spectrum from the RR" 😂 It's a good little car for its purpose though, and it also has "sufficient" power 😅

When you take a look for all parts of EV story, there are still many challenges like: how will we produce so much electricity, where will mine materials for battery, will people feel comfortable to drive on old car batteries in 10 years, how hard is to recycle or fix old battery. I have feeling gasoline cars will still stay many years in production.

Couldn't care less about the V12 being gone. Electric, for better or worse, seems to be the future, and it certainly suits a Rolls-Royce. In my mind the V12 was simply a means to an end, since V12s have always provided supreme torque and unparalleled smoothness, which is exactly what a Rolls-Royce needs. But you know what gives greater torque and even greater smoothness? Electric motors. It's a no-brainer, especially for a Rolls-Royce, where the added weight from a battery pack doesn't matter in the slightest.

Very good review, and was pretty much spot on! Yes, the price is on the "lofty" side, but it id sll about the "experience". I had the Wraith, and yes it does favor it physically, but it is definitely different ..... they are both beautiful cars. (BTW. I cannot wait to see if you get to review the upcoming Cadillac Celestiq ..... the "upstart" Ultra-Lux EV!

I'll never understand why RR elects to use glossy trim as a method of showcasing luxury in their cars. It's so easy to smudge and collect dust. I just dont get it.

The assumption is probably that if you own a RR, you employ people who can keep the interior nice & shiny at all times. Practicality is for the plebs.

Doug is the type of guy to set up an outdoor mic during a hurricane.

Doug all bmw have that preset option since like forever. Basic 3 series have it since early 2000s. Glad you finally noticed😂

The rear seats are outfitted with all the possible amenities. However, I reckon that it would be quite challenging to fit comfortably two adults back there

To me it’s for kids. For adults, it’s for very short trips! One thing I noticed is almost zero leg room when he put the drivers seat back!

I really like the AC units design. Will look great in years to come still

The running of your fingers over the buttons and the buttons being touch sensitive is BMW sourced and I had it on my 2014 3 series.

Also, I'm digging the boat tail look.

I'm glad Doug and I can agree on one thing. We do like a beautiful back end.

Doug completely skipped over the digital license plate!

Rolls never ever make sense on paper. I had the privilege of driving a 60's era Rolls, and one of the first S-Class's from 89. The S-Class was absolutely beautiful to drive, something which I never thought I would ever top. Until, I drove the Rolls. My God. I have never experienced such a beautiful driving machine. It's just something else, even in a car that was 58 years old at that point, it was just.... next level.

True luxury is not needing to know exactly what temperature your climate control is, only "warmer" and "cooler".

Doug is always sporting a new Costco outfit every new episode. It's not about Gucci. It's about basic self-respect and dignity. And why would a nose picker be interested in a Rolls-Royce to begin with? There's a big world in between pretentiously overdressed and a total slob. I think it is called "presentable".
