I think that the Academy will change their eligibility to include 2022 movies and give Babylon all of the awards, shocking everybody. Either that or they nominate Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Holdovers, Barbie, Past Lives, Anatomy of a Fall, Maestro, and for the last two slots maybe The Color Purple, American Fiction, or Zone of Interest

My current GoldDerby predictions (as of 29.10.23): *Best Picture:* 10. Air 9. Bob Marley: One Love 8. American Fiction 7. Past Lives 6. Anatomy of a Fall 5. Barbie 4. Killers of the Flower Moon 3. Poor Things 2. The Holdovers 1. Oppenheimer Well I've finally decided! I've drunk the American Fiction Kool Aid, after denying it for some time. I initially took out Air for it, but ended up losing faith in The Color Purple and bringing Air back in. I took Killers of the Flower Moon down a couple spot, but not for lack of faith in it but for increased faith in other contenders. The movie I have lost a wee bit of my faith in and took down a bit is Past Lives. The Color Purple is still clearly my 11#, and it will be the one I bring in if they ever officially move the Bob Marley movie to 2024. The one other movie I think can very well get in is May December, which...get used to me saying I have that movie as a "maybe", this is far from the last time. My extreme lack of faith in Maestro, The Zone of Interest and All of Us Strangers as Oscar contenders is also a theme you'll see consistantly down the line. *Best Director:* (SUPERBET) 5. Greta Gerwig (Barbie) 4. Alexander Payne (The Holdovers) 3. Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon) 2. Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) 1. Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer) This is probably the category I feel most confident about, mostly since I don't think anyone outside this 5 has that strong a chance. Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall) is probably the 6# due to being international, but I don't think she has the nearly strength of the others. My estimation of Maestro and The Zone of Interest has been stated before. The only other one with a hint of a chance is Celine Song (Past Lives), but that ship has sailed. *Best Actress:* 5. Greta Lee (Past Lives) 4. Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) 3. Margot Robbie (Barbie) 2. Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) 1. Emma Stone (Poor Things) This is a turbulant category for sure. I picked Lee for my 5# since I have Past Lives in Best Picture and need to find tag-along nominations for it, but Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple) and Natalie Portman (May December) are very close behind. I have trouble believing in Annette Bening (Nyad) but I no longer consider that an impossibilty. Surprise surprise, my utter doubt of Maestro means I'm not considering Carey Mulligan. Not currently contemplating any other possibility. *Best Actor:* 5. Kingsley Ben-Adir (Bob Marley: One Love) 4. Leonardo DiCaprio (Killers of the Flower Moon) 3. Colman Domingo (Rustin) 2. Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) 1. Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) Don't count Giamatti out of the winning race! So in case you didn't notice, I'm a Bob Marley: One Love believer, and for some reason it seems like I'm the only one. Get this into your heads: the virgin Maestro vs. the Chad Bob Marley: One Love! Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) is by far and away my 6#, and I'm having a hard time keeping him off. If they remove Bob Marley, I'm putting in Wright in a heartbeat. Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) is the only other non-impossibility, but it's a very long shot. *Best Supporting Actress:* 5. Viola Davis (Air) 4. America Ferrera (Barbie) 3. Jodie Foster (Nyad) 2. Taraji P. Henson (The Color Purplr) 1. Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) If I had a nickel for every time in the last 2 Oscars where this category was the absolute wild wild west, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right? The top 2 are the only ones I feel any degree of confidence in, the bottom 3 could really be taken out at any time. Decided only recently to buy into the America Ferrera hype after I saw people say she has a memorable monologue in the movie, and Viola Davis is in to support Air being in Best Picture. HMs in descending order: Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple) Julianne Moore (May December), Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), Erika Alexander (American Fiction), Rosamund Pike (Saltburn). Not believing in anyone else rn. P.S. Florence Pugh deserves a nom more than Emily Blunt! *Best Supporting Actor:* 5. Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) 4. Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon) 3. Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) 2. Ryan Gosling (Barbie) 1. Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) RDJ better win this shit or *so help me* This is a case where my top 4 feel absolute locks, and then the 5# is a death match. I want desperately to put back John Magaro (Past Lives) in there, but I feel like he's completely lost heat. I'm also having a hard time believing Willem Dafoe (Past Lives) because of recent cases like Nightmare Alley were they snubbed him. Charles Melton (May December) and Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction) are very close behind Sessa, and probably stand above Magaro by this point. I'm not buying Colman Domingo (The Color Purple), Glenn Howerton (BlackBerry), any of the other Oppenheimer boys or anyone from Air. *Best Adaped Screenplay:* (SUPERBET) 5. Christopher Miller, Phil Lord and Dave Callaham (Spiderman: Across the Spider Verse) 4. Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer) 3. Cord Jefferson (American Fiction) 2. Martin Scorsese and Eric Roth (Killers of the Flower Moon) 1. Tony McNamara (Poor Things) Made this my 2nd Superbet mostly because I don't see what else can be nominated. After taking out The Zone of Interest and All of Us Strangers, which as I mentioned I don't believe in, what else is there really? The closest I got are Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (Dumb Money), but that doesn't feel like this movie's gonna materialize. Especially in light of this lack of competition, I'm extremely upset Mission Impossible 7 isn't in the running, as it clearly deserves to be. *Best Original Screenplay:* 5. Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, Zach Baylin and Reinaldo Marcus Green (Bob Marley: One Love) 4. Justine Triet and Arthur Harari (Anatomy of a Fall) 3. Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach (Barbie) 2. David Hemingston (The Barbie being frauded from Adapted where it clearly belongs to Original, baffles me. Don't rule out the possibility of the AMPAS correcting it and puting it back in Adapted where it belongs. This is a tough category since there are a lot of movies outside that can get in, but no movies that I can take out to make room, unless they move the Bob Marley movie to 2024. The 2 screenplays that are hard to keep out are Sammy Burch and Alex Mechanik (May December) and Alex Convery (Air), and I'm also not counting out Emrald Fennell (Saltburn). Take a WILD guess why I didn't mention Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer (Maestro). *Best Cinematography:* 5. Erik Messerschmidt (The Killer) 4. Linus Sandgren (Saltburn) 3. Robbie Ryan (Poor Things) 2. Rodrigo Prieto (Killers of the Flower Moon) 1. Hoyte van Hoytema (Oppenheimer) This is where I decided to give a consolation nomination to a couple of movies I don't have nominated anywhere else. I originally had the consoled movie being Maestro, but I put in The Killer instead after removing it from another category. I considered Dan Laustsen (The Color Purple), but then I saw the trailer and the lighting was kinda ugly. *Best Costume Design:* 5. Napoleon 4. Killers of the Flower Moon 3. The Color Purple 2. Poor Things 1. Barbie This is where I decided to give the consolation to Napoleon. Barbie has this in the bag, not much to say. *Best Editing:* 5. Hilda Rasula (American Fiction) 4. Yorgos Mavropsaridis (Poor Things) 3. William Goldenberg (Air) 2. Thelma Schoonmaker (Killers of the Flower Moon) 1. Jennifer Lame (Oppenheimer) I don't know what stands out more to me: Lanthimos casting a fellow Yorgos as editor, or Oppenheimer's editor apparently being Khaby's relative? This is the category I used to give supporting nominations to some of my less nominated Best Picture. I don't buy Kevin Tent (The Holdovers), but I guess American Fiction is my alternative to that in a way. Runners up with a decent chance are Nick Houy (Barbie), Laurent Sénéchal (Anatomy of a Fall) and Kirk Baxter (The Killer). *Best Production Design:* 5. Asteroid City 4. Oppenheimer 3. Poor Things 2. Killers of the Flower Moon 1. Barbie Another one Barbie is gonna win in a landslide. Don't really know what else can be nominated. *Best Animated Feature:* 5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant 4. Nimona 3. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget 2. The Boy and the Heron 1. Spiderman: Across the Spider Verse If you're questioning my Nimona call, I have 2 things to tell you in rebuttal: Klaus and The Sea Beast. Don't forget those! So you may have noticed I don't have the Walt Disney Company nominated here, and let me tell you: that decision was very hard and very recent, but when push came to shove, I don't think Elemental or Wish will have the strength of any of the top 5 movies.

@@ClassicalMusic2002 From Vanity Fair, September 26, 2023 Vanity Fair: There hasn't been an openly trans actor nominated for an Oscar. Do you feel a degree of pressure walking into that scenario in a campaign, when it truly has never happened before? Trace Lysette: It's good pressure, it's similar to how I felt going to Venice. They hadn't had a trans lead in [competition] in their 79 festivals as of last year. We do have to knock on that glass ceiling, and trans people, in spite of what the public may think, we're not new. We've been around since the beginning of history, it's just that our history gets left out. We've always been here and deserving, and a lot of times it's about a lack of access for trans people. Our lot in life is just different. For me, I've worked really hard to get to this point. I'm going to continue to show up for myself by any means, and try to stay the course. That's what I keep telling myself every day. Vanity Fair: Was Venice the first time you saw the movie with an audience? Trace Lysette: Yes, actually it was. I had seen cuts of it and we'd given notes, fought for a scene or two to get put back in. But that was my first time watching with an audience, and I was blown away when the lights came up. There was this eerie quiet, because there's no music when the movie ends, it's just dead silence,. Then the applause happened, and then they just kept clapping and clapping and clapping. Then I started crying, and then they clapped some more.

I’m still trying to have Song in my Best Directors list. Past Lives is A24s number one priority and still doing better than The Holdovers with both critics and audiences. Song can and should still have the slot people are giving to Payne. I’m also a bit dubious of Anatomy of a Fall. I think it falls out of Director over not being chosen for International (it is a very good movie, but I’m not even sure it is better than Decision to Leave, so I really don’t trust it). Conventional wisdom is this gets Jonathon Glazer in, but I wonder if Wim Wenders gets a chance? If Perfect Days emerges as the International frontrunner, I think he has a chance. Of course, my personal list (based only on what I have seen so far) is very different: 1. Pablo Larrain (El Conde) 2. Celine Song (Past Lives) 3. Wes Anderson (Asteroid City) 4. The Phillipou’s (Talk to Me) 5. Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer)

It’s interesting that you think one scene guarantees Cooper a nomination but Wright, whom you didn’t see, didn’t do enough to be nominated. As for Domingo, I really wish the idea of a performance not getting nominated if the film doesn’t get multiple nominations would stop. What that says is that performances don’t matter which is kind of the point of the award. In a perfect world.

@@rafaelrpc not everyone. In fact if you check the gold derby experts predictions many of them took it of and some of the people that had barbie in the top 3 a few months ago now have it at number 10. Many people are considering taking it out since its not even clear if its going to be accepted as an original screenplay and it shouldnt. They are using the same arguments they used for Joker, and the academy didnt accept Joker as an original screenplay, forcing warner to submit it for adapted, and if this happens again with Barbie, theres no way they get an adapted screenplay nom. That category its extremely packed this year. Usually movies that get a BP nomination need an editing or screenplay nomination and I dont know if Barbie gets even one of those. I mean I can see them getting a BP since it was a big success in the box office, but saying its one of the front runners? Thats just not true at all. I only consider to be a front runner the 3 top movies. And this year those 3 are clearly Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon. Just my opinion though. I respect people that still have Barbie in their BP list specially at number 4. I just think its a bold prediction.
