2024 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Suna Review / Why it's better than the CX-50

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Mazda CX-30 replaced the CX-3. The CX-90 replaced the CX-9. But the CX-50 has not yet replaced the Mazda CX-5. Why is that? Why is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 such a popular model among small families and one of Mazda’s best sellers?
One of the reasons why the CX-5 is so popular is because of the engines that it is available with. Sure, the base 2.5L naturally aspirated engine will not win over any hearts with its 187 hp & 186 lb-ft of torque(139 Kw / 252 Nm). But the optional 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that is under the hood of this CX-5 Suna will light some fires. It has two power outputs depending on the type of fuel you use. It can produce 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque (167 kW & 420 Nm) when it is running on regular octane fuel. If you use premium fuel, this engine produces 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque (191 kW & 434 Nm). The Mazda CX-50 is available with the exact same engines and same power outputs.
The driving dynamics of the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is one of the other major reasons why consumers, and auto journalists alike, love this crossover SUV. The steering is not only sharp but it feels like as though it’s actually connected to the front wheels. Because of this, the CX5 2024 gives you the confidence to drive it around corners at higher speeds than other SUVs.

Great video. Love the details you put into creating it. Very informative as well. I finally made a decision and going with the 2024 Mazda CX-5 2.5 Turbo Premium AWD in Machine Gray Metallic. Paying in cash. Should be here within the next three weeks. Can't wait!

Great review. Simply the best auto cinematography there is! Is the CX-5 just that good or did Mazda miss on the 50? My theory, and its theory only, is that Mazda will continue to make the CX-50 the rough and tumble outdoorsy one while the CX-5 will be the fun to drive elegant one. The interior of the CX-5 is still one of the best in the industry. I don’t think a CX-5 redesign will come until they have new drivetrains for it. A mild 48 V hybrid CX-90 derived 4 cylinder would be quite intriguing.

Thanks! I got really lucky with the fog & morning sun on that day. In my opinion, the CX-50 isn't even that much of an outdoorsy vehicle. Yea it has more ground clearance, but it's done through the use of big wheels and it has low profile tires. It's not proper off-road equipment. Everything else is basically the same as the CX-5 just at a higher cost. I do hope that the next gen CX-5 will have at least a 48Volt mild-hybrid (or a PHEV option). They have to in today's market.

I think Mazda shouldnt stop the CX5. The turbo more satisfying to drive than the base Macan, while being insanely more reliable and practical. The steering is the best of any crossover period and its well build and looks great

I looked at both CX-50 and CX-5 last month when our 21 y/o mini van died. We went for the CX-5 finally because it is better cost/feature worthy towards the CX-50. We picked the base trim without turbo/sun roof/ i-stop functions, not only we don't need them(1st 2 features) but we just hate the i-stop. It's been a month now and we are very happy with the CX-5's performance for daily drive around town. Hi-way merging is no problem at all when I floored the gas pedal and if we have pax sitting at the back row(heavy load) just click the Mi-drive sw to sport and it would roar at your command. Overall the build quality and handling is top-notch and almost perfect( it would be if it has the Hybrid option, hope they will come soon)

Is the 50 not the stationary Wankel generator hybrid version you speak of?

CX5 defintiely is a better design than the CX50 which is more of a raised wagon ( like the Subaru Outback) than a SUV. After owing my 2018 CX5 GT for 6 years, I still think that CX5 is still the best SUV in its class for driving dynamics, interior quality and NVH. Waht it lacks for 20224 is the choice of a hybrid power train in addition to the base and turbo engines.

@carenthusiast4984 ok, a quick Google search has yielded some answers. Yes, the CX50 has a twin-scroll turbo vs a dynamic pressure turbo in the CX5. But here's an interesting quote: "Mazda engineers say the Dynamic Pressure Turbo achieves a 20 to 25 per cent quicker response than a twin-scroll turbocharger at engine speeds below 1500rpm to produce a power delivery equivalent of a larger displacement, naturally aspirated engine." www.drivencarguide.co.nz/news/turbo-system-a-world-first/
