2024 JD power Dependability Study // How does your favourite brand do?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a Motormouth couple car video discussing the recently released 2024 JD Power Dependability Study covering 2021 models after 3 years of ownership. The study is in its 35th year and covers 184 specific problem areas over 9 major vehicle categories. They include, climate; driving assistance; driving experience; exterior; features/controls/displays; infotainment; interior; powertrain; and seats.
The 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 30,595 original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study was fielded from August through November 2023.
Infotainment is the biggest issue, it has twice as many problems as the next category which is exterior. Biggest issues with infotainment include, Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity and built-in voice recognition.
Another area is annoyance with driver assistance alerts. The number problems related to these alerts has increased between the 90 day ownership period and the three year ownership period.
Electrified vehicles are more problematic than others. Whether it’s a pure EV or a PHEV owners experience more problems than owners of gas powered or hybrid vehicles. At three years of ownership tires are a sore spot for BEVs with 39% of owners saying they replaced tires in the past 12 months. 19 percentage points higher than gas owners.
The most improved brands are Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Toyota. The are showing most improvement in the number of problems.
Lexus ranks highest overall in dependability for a second consecutive year. In the luxury brand category Porsche ranks second and BMW third.
Toyota ranks second in the mass market segment with Buick is second, followed by Chevrolet and Mini who are tied.
Overall it’s Lexus first, followed by Toyota, Buick, Chevrolet and MINI tied, Porsche is in 5th followed by Mazda, Kia, BMW, Dodge and Jeep. All above average scores.

It used to be if it started, and AC worked nothing else really mattered. Now if any part of electronics fails nothing works and you must go to dealer for repair, and they are not equipped yet to turn the repairs around quickly!! When you add all the extras like Car play, navigation and software issues and electric charging problems it will not change anytime soon! The lack of techs will become critical. The younger people coming into workforce do not want to get dirty or sweat, and if they have a tech background, they can work in software or other fields and make way more money for less difficult work.! Great show as always!!!

It’s interesting to see the shift in reliability being based on electronics as opposed to mechanics. Frankly, I could probably deal with glitchy screens and connection issues than failed engine components and other related mechanical issues. I can’t imagine anyone sitting in a broken down car in the middle of the highway saying, “At least my touch screen is super responsive and can integrate Apple CarPlay flawlessly.” 😂

Surprisingly Audi was near the bottom and I've had an Audi S5 for 7 years and have had no mechanical issues but I have had the odd issue where the dash is just a blank black screen or one time I had no audio sound coming out. I turn the car off and back on and it's working again and I've never had to bring it to the dealer for these issues!

Honda and Acura struggles with Technology features in their cars. That is probably the best factor why they are so low on the list, not the general reliability. Also Lexus added touchscreens as an option for people to use instead of the remote touch pad only that year.

Old hat, but JD Power Dependabiltiy is not a mechanical reliability study. The areas that it is evaluating are: body, interior, seats, infotainment, HVAc and features/control, and its collected through survey feedback. The "problem" is that as a weighted index, you don't know what a reported problem constitutes. Theoretically a mechanically reliable car with an annoying infotainment system will score badly if if never breaks down but people complain about it all the time. The second big issue is that these are self-reported surveys. BMW ranking third tells you everything you need to know about the study: if you've ever worked on one you know that it's not going to be more reliable than a Toyota or Honda in the long run, but three years is a short time and *still within the warranty/lease period.* Since a lot of luxury cars are leased their customers aren't thinking about long term cost efficiencies, and will tend to overlook things that would irk a more value-conscious buyer.

The J.D. Power 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study published Feb.8, 2024 pretty much lines up with Consumer Reports "Who Makes the Most Reliable New Cars?" (Nov.29, 2023). It's interesting to note the CR sample size (based on its annual subscriber survey feedback) is about 10x larger than the 31k sample used by J.D. Power. In the Consumer Reports rankings Acura/Honda and Subaru fare much better than J.D. Power's results. A benefit of Consumer Reports rankings is they use a 10-year rolling scale which identifies common problem areas in specific model years. CR also excludes models that fall below the threshold of feedback which more acurately reflect findings. Given that a new vehicle is usually the 2nd most expensive purchase made by consumers, it makes sense that Buyers research information from multiple trusted & reliable sources before making a decision.

As somebody who used to work in boutique market research and was tasked to to these kinds of indexes from time to time, the difference is in how the information is weighted. That's the secret sauce, ever specialist firm has their "proprietary" way of doing it and the ranking you get depends on which factor you value more in your calculation. I suspect that if the weighting is more towards hard mechanical reliability factors, your list looks more traditional with Toyota and Honda near the top. if you weight heavier for subjective "satisfaction" issues (like how annoying the infotainment and controls are) then that changes. I suspect that JD Power tends to show luxury brands higher than you would expect because that kind of customer is "satisfied" with having a status purchase and that weighs more than what a value customer would care about.

I've participated in Survey's from both organizations. The main difference is JD Power is a for-profit business that sells its data back to Manufacturers whereas Consumer Reports is not-for-profit and receives zero advertising revenue from Manufacturers.@@japanwatchconnection

Same company but different management. Porsche has their own CEO and management team so does Audi and Volkswagen despite sharing parts, Audi and VW share parts while Porsche shares Audi parts particular the Q5 and such. Porsche is the more expensive brand vs Audi. I guarentee the dependability depending on how its measured AUid and VW ranked low due to cost cutting. Since covid a lot of the models had to remove essential functions due to parts issue and interior was downgraded in terms of some creature comforts. Particular VW Taos is hot garbage.

In my experience, cars start having troubles after the three years mark. Some of the brands on the upper half drop to the lower half past 4 year mark. Lexus and Toyota stay true to their reliability even past 10-15 years. Honda and Acura have amazing long term reliability. Nissan owned brands have problems past 9-10 years of being on road. Ford cars and Korean brands ride mostly features and are least desirable after 160000 kms or 100000 miles.

I own a Lexus RX450 Hybrid and it’s the best car I have ever owned! I been driving for 50 years and have always driven American until seeing Scott Kilmer on you tube. He’s a mechanic that has worked on cars for decades and always ranks Lexus and Toyota the highest. I would say the RX is bigger than a midsize and I get 30 miles to a gallon and have never had any mechanical issues. My only regret is that it took 50 years to find out about Toyota, Lexus.

Cars have simply become way too complex. I feel more than a bit hesitant to buy anything new because of all the unavoidable "driver-assistance" safety features (instead of a push for drivers to actually look out the windows, scan, and, you know... be a skilled driver!). Then there are problem-prone, or simply annoying, features like auto stop/start and cylinder-deactivation for engines that have only 4-cylinders to begin with. Add the growing lack of skilled technicians and sky-high maintenance and repair costs (like those infamous EV battery packs), and, while I'd like something new, I'll somewhat-sadly continue to hold on to my 2001 Toyota while it remains reliable.

I know this study and others like it compare a cross section of multiple vehicles and report back on their reliability. However, I continue to hear anecdotal story after story about individuals' personal experience. For example, a co-worker had a Mini that required almost $6,000 of repairs. With the value of the car declining, he simply got rid of it and got a Jeep. I drove a friends Mini years ago and while fun to drive, it felt rickety. She got rid of it not long after. I'm not just picking on Mini. I had THREE Mazdas, ALL that failed me at some point (clutch went out, turbo died and transmission went out on the third). These studies can provide reliability predictors, but driving styles, road conditions, years of service, etc. all impact how a vehicle fares. And I'm STILL not convinced that Buick builds a quality vehicle.

Great video. I bought my bronco sport badlands in Jan ‘21. So far one of the most reliable vehicles I’ve owned, next to my 13 Flex I traded on it. I now have almost 77,000 kms on the clock. One warranty claim to repair a rubber seal on an aesthetic piece of plastic and a service bulletin on the rear brakes howling in reverse after first start of the day. Good power, the 2 litre is getting 1.5 litre fuel economy and it’s pretty darn good on the trails I’ve had it on. I wasn’t ever a ford guy. In fact I always swore against them. The Flex changed my attitude. I am obsessive about preventative maintenance and do oil changes every 5000 kms. Have done that on every car I’ve owned and regularly send cars off with 300k to 400k kms. With no engine problems. Keep up the great work.

I don’t think these ratings are a very fair comparison to how good the car actually is mechanically, because you’re relying on people who may not know how to use their electronic gadgetry in the car, giving it a bad review, so, therefore JD Power is to some degree reporting on the reliability of the owner lol

JD Power should add the thickness of the owner's manual to their ratings. If you need to intimately know the details of a 1" thick owner's manual then you will never be happy with the car. Most people only use a small fraction of the features but every so often some feature (their comments on lane change) makes the driver crazy. Remember simplicity means reliability and complexity means more failures.

  • @lukewalker1051
    @lukewalker10514 ай бұрын

Honestly and with respect this conversation is way more nuanced, model and even engine specific. There has been a major shift away from reliability deliberately for planned obsolescence and greater product complexity. Fewer cylinders, turbos, CVT's, Hybrids with batteries, these are all trends to increase part replacement out of warranty for greater auto company profit. Many of the vehicles on your list for example are NA V6 models of Toyota and Lexus with rock solid 8 speed auto trans with torque converter and the V6 is now virtually eliminated from Toyota/Lexus which is the most reliable engine they ever produced. This is deliberate for profit and the uneducated consumer will pay dearly for those CVT's Hybrids and turbo 4 cylinder cars out of warranty. Caveat Emptor is the takeaway. Consumers step very carefully. Automobile purchase today is a minefield. Never lose sight of why car companies exist. They exist for profit they derive from the consumer and are very clever with their business model.
