2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid AWD Quick Review // The Most Sensible Car In The World

The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE AWD ($29,379 as specced in Canada, $25,545 as specced in the US) is an affordable and fuel efficient option with little competition near its price in Canada. Powered by a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors, the AWD Corolla Hybrid is capable of 134 horsepower and has a claimed economy of 5.9 L/100 km (48 mpg) combined. Does this affordable little hybrid Toyota have any major faults that might take away from its attractive price, practicality, and fuel efficiency? Thomas and James investigate. Ah yes - this right here is why you guys are SO good at reviews; instead of crapping all over the car for not having a 500 hp engine, leather interior and handling like a 911, you applaud the car for what it's MEANT to be. That's awfully bad about dealers though - yet given how slimy many are, not hard to imagine them doing that.

Yours is just at the edge of what is considered, "Toyotas golden age" where reliability surpasses the modern adaptation of... Modern tech stuff, and it will probably go another 20 years (as long as it's not driven crazily hard) with basic maintenance and occasional replacement of stuff that other cars would usually have replaced 10 years ago.

You guys nailed the value proposition of the Corolla Hybrid. I own 3 of them for my driving school business. I bought the first in 2020 (now has over 100K trouble-free miles), and another in 2022 and one more this January. They are the perfect mix of “normal” for teaching new drivers, excellent mpg with a transparent hybrid system, spacious enough, and should be as reliable as a legacy Prius that donated its powertrain. I’ve owned several makes of cars in my 10-car fleet, and the Corolla Hybrids are the best. Since used car prices were so out of touch last year getting a new car made a lot more sense. $22K and change for a Corolla is a fair deal. We paid MRSP too. Only waited a month for it to come in. (Plus we got it before the loan rates went up, up, up) It has NO option packages on it but even as a gas only car it still gets up to 38mpg. This is how they get away with it. Because the car is technically “used” now. And they continue to get away with it because the dealership will quote you a 3-12 month wait on the model you’re interested in and all they have to do is get you the car in that time frame and they have met their obligations. This was the top of our list, & like you said the dealers made it way too expensive with their markups. I ended up with a one owner 46k mile 2010 Camaro instead, since the Chevy dealer happily sold it to us with a 4 year bumper to bumper warranty, 2 years of complimentary maintenance, & brand new tires for under $14k.

I've always been a Corolla guy. I learned to drive on a Corolla as a little kid. We had a couple of them as our family car over the years. I've had quite a few old ones in my adulthood. It's always been my go-to rental car for work travel (though I recently started branching out and trying to drive stuff I've never driven.) I've lived in a Corolla. I've only bought 2 brand new cars in my life. A 2016 Civic T, and a 2023 Civic Sport Touring... I loved 2016. And I love my 23... but I do miss some Toyota stuff. This time I was trying to buy the new Prius, but I couldn't even test drive one within 400 miles of me. I couldn't wait 6 months or longer. I needed a car. The civic is nice. But the lack of torque off-the-line and the rough, stiff ride make me miss all the $800-2500 Corollas I've had that were infinitely reliable, handled like a dream, and had surprisingly comfortable suspension. And all of them were quick. More than quick enough for normal driving, and quick enough to have a little fun. I only ever drove one (a coworker's) that had no torque. Idk if I just got lucky with models and trims, or if there was something wrong with his car. But I hate stepping on the pedal and having to wait for the car to respond. Idc about 0-60. I care about 0-40, and 30-100. Because those are the things that matter in daily driving, and avoiding wrecks.

I tell them as a car enthusiast I see the value in all car and what they were built for. I don't even buy into name brands cause they all have there faults. You just pick what works for you and your family. Also here in the US they are marking used cars way higher than a new one its crazy.

I bought the 2021 version of this car, I.E, no all wheel drive and no heated steering wheel. Honestly, it is a fanstatic car. I average about 4.2-4.5l/100 Km per tank of gas in the summer, even with my slightly heavy foot. The best I've done is 3.9l/100 km on a drive from Sarnia, ON to Ottawa ON which is about 700 km and i didnt stop for up until I actually reached Ottawa. The entire drive was incredibly relaxing thanks to the seats, the radar cruise and lane keep. I put some decent tires on for the winters here in Ottawa, and it did incredible too, averaging about 5.5-6L /100 KM per tank of gas with the heat on and everything. I do want to buy a second 'fun' car for the summers sometime soon, but for work, my side gig and for trips with my friends, this truly is car, and i wouldn't have it any other way.

But it was perfectly happy with the cheapest crap gas I could feed it. Decent economy too while treating the throttle like a light switch here in NYC. The audio system was terrible. But it did have a ton of features. Even though it had steel wheels and wheel covers. Active radar cruise control / Lane keep assist / all that stuff which I found strange in that price category. I've worked in the auto industry for 10 years, and despite all this I bought myself the most car "car", a 2023 Corolla Hybrid SE AWD. In that time I've come to realize how expensive cars are to maintain over a lengthened ownership period. I very nearly went for a new Golf R but decided I wanted a purely economical vehicle. Low cost of ownership, economical, and importantly AWD (live in Alberta). I was then mostly looking at an Impreza, but caught wind of the 2023 Hybrid AWD on press release. I placed an order before I could even officially do so. At the time lightly used cars made little sense because prices were so inflated. I was able to get my Corolla at MSRP. I did splurge for some creature comforts. As this is my daily A to B and I want to keep it for a long time I think it was worth it for the SE trim, I would strongly recommend NOT going for the XSE, you only get leather and 10 years of Navigation subscription, which is negated with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. Not all upgrades were mentioned in this review. Over the LE you get upgraded exterior styling, much nicer 18" alloys, wireless charging, and 5-years of remote connect (very nice for winter), along with the mentioned upgraded interior package and seats, dual exhaust, and sunroof. Since I got my car in early March I have been very happy. I'm averaging 5.0L/100km and it does exactly what I wanted and need it to do. It's just reliable and economical. I can highly recommend "The most sensible car in the world"!

Looked at one of these at our local Toyota dealer (Langley Toyota) and they broke out the book of "Everything Dealers do to Screw Customers." Wouldn't accept a cash purchase (make more money from financing), insisted we had to buy a $600 remote "insurance" package, so if we lost our remote, they'd replace it for "free," inflated "documents" charges, etc. Sleaze from top to bottom.
