    Very interesting comparison. To me, since I'm basically set on an Epson LS800 UST, it seems to indicate that the half-4K that does much like the 5050 in this comparo is a borderline non-issue, the 5050 seems to be able to keep up quite well on the sharpness front. I do wish Epson would put more focus on shutting their fans up, though. They seem to consistently shade higher on noise than most.

    Great comparison! I would think that brightness and contrast ratio are not the only deciding factors for such high end projectors, but I would consider color accuracy, sharpness, black levels, and throw ratio also into the list of key parameters. In my view BenQ scores high in color accuracy, sharpness and throw ratio, while JVC or Sony scores in black levels. Epson only scores in brightness nothing else. My pick is always BenQ for value for money

    Great tests thank you so much! I purchased the Jq818c based off your recommendation and for the money it’s great! I do wish you went over some more quality of life points just so us buyers are most informed before purchase! Things like the vertical keystone having no indication where “middle” is, or if the projector has any auto shutdown after certain period (it will stay on all night if you forget you shut it off even if there is no source) I also really appreciate how much care and time you have invested in using the highest quality hardware and conditions so that your comparisons are as unbiased and accurate as possible. But I think it would be valuable to most users to also include a “real world” or “not perfect” section. How does the image look if the projector is slightly out of focus? What if it isn’t perfectly parallel to the screen? How heavily does crop affect the image (if digital). These are all things I’ve seen projectors vary widely in across many price points but especially in the budget areas where I imagine many people find the sweet spot in price/performance. Thank you so much for your contribution to the tech community in these reviews!

    Simply wow! Side by side measurements and observations on the few available mid-priced home theatre projectors. No time wasted clicking through menu options or parroting manufacturers specs. Fantastic! Would have been interesting to add the LS12000 to the mix. For those willing to stretch their budget, it is the last stop on the way to crazy town. (JVC) Only one point in the review gives me pause, and that is the unbelievably high contrast measurement for the LS11000. Other than that, everything else aligns with past measurements. Great work.

  • @TheHookUp

    @TheHookUp

    The reason I didn't include the LS12000 is that it's difficult for consumers to actually buy it. Epson intends the LS12000 to be an "integrator" product, like the 6050 was, so you need to use a home theater installer to purchase it.

  • @Lafiro

    What do you honestly think of the LS12000 though? I’m in the market for a 83” or so OLED but at the same time it would be great to have a single projector handle 2 separate theater rooms of my home. One being a two car garage and the other the basement. I think a projector at that price range and it’s claimed specs would do me better for theater purposes. What do you all think? I have the ability to buy it but have no idea about it compared to anything in this video. And btw, excellent content!

    @@TheHookUp it’s the only way to spend $2-6k for something good enough to cover both locations. Outdoor insulated and finished two car garage during the warmer months and then to the basement for the rest of the year. Else I have to look at a tv or so for the basement theater room and a more basic projector for the garage and deal with not ever being able to watch something with a 1 garage door open during the day - at least that was the majority of the experience with a 500 ansi lumens projector I tested. .edit Now I’m looking at either the 5000 or 6000es from Sony and call it a day. I’m receiving a jmgo ultra and I know it ain’t like the $3k+ projectors from Epson and Sony and JVC, but I wonder how good it will actually be? Especially for that once a year occasion I may want to take it to my cousins house and project on his house outdoors on his few acres of privacy. Decisions decisions.

As an aside, the existing integration for Epson picked it up in HA which meant all of my movie time automations were a breeze to update in NR. Much better than the IR blaster solution I needed for my previous projector. This might be a worthwhile mention on future reviews (HA compatibility).

It's been really tough to decide what I should replace it with, and if the LS11000 would be an improvement; a lot of people on Reddit seem to feel the 5050 is better overall but this was an absolute Harvard level thesis presentation on the comparison of these projectors. Now, I have to decide if I'm getting the 11000 or leaping to the 12000, but you helped me feel like I won't be making an expensive mistake with the 11000.

    Great video! I really appreciate your balance of data/science driven measurements with subjective/practical opinion. Data is great but most people don’t have the knowledge or experience to understand what the data translate to . Contrast is a good example, a 500:1 vs a 2,000:1 projector will look awful. But a 2,000:1 vs a 10,000:1 comparison might be difficult to notice to a lot of people. I see people on forums pay 2x or 3x for equipment that is only maybe 25% better on paper. When in reality it’s barely noticeable in person and may even come with lots of quirks that might be hard to live with day to day. Anyway, this is a masterclass on reviewing a products! I’m certain this is the most comprehensive review of these segments while being useful and easy to understand no matter a viewers knowledge level

    Fun fact: Pixel shifting can be used on some cameras to get smaller sensors to record larger images. Some people developed firmware for older Canon EOS cameras that lets you record in higher resolutions and it uses the same technology. Just interesting to see the tech in use in so many different places. (You can get 5k out of cameras from 10 years ago, depending on how low you want the framerate lol)

    I absolutely love the thoroughness of your reviews! You are the Project Farm of the smart home / video space, no doubt about it. The one nit-pick I'd have is the labeling of these low-end to mid-range projectors as "premium" or "high-end". The fact that neither Sony nor JVC made a showing and Epson was the top dog is a great illustration of that. "True" high-end home theater projectors START at $5,500 and very quickly go up from there. And I do say "start" because those people in the rarified range of ultra high end home theaters (the ones that paid $75k for THX Home Cinema certification) will scoff at any projector under the $35k range. So yeah, these are great projectors and the Epson laser hits the point where anything above it will have rapidly diminishing returns... but they aren't premium or high-end!

  • @TheHookUp

    @TheHookUp

    10 ай бұрын

    I think I would call those "Ultra Premium" or "Prosumer" options. $4000 for the LS11000 + $1000-2000 for a screen is still a very large investment for the vast majority of people, especially when an 85" TV from Best Buy is in the $1500 range these days. One other consideration is that these are likely the most premium projectors I'll ever do a review on. Above this price point it's all going to come down to preference and I'd tell anyone looking to spend $10,000+ on a projector that they need to go in to a showroom and decide which image looks best to them instead of taking someone else's word for it.

    Thank you so much for all of your helpful content - I've binge watched so many of your videos in the past few days! Just one question - any reason you recommended the Dangbei Mars Pro over the Formovie X5 as the budget pick (since you favored the Formovie X5 slightly in your last living room projector video)? Thanks again!

  • @TheHookUp

    @TheHookUp

    9 ай бұрын

    The Formovie X5 is great and is definitely a better pick if you plan on using the built in speakers, but the Dangbei Mars Pro has a new firmware update that unlocks all the android 11 color management options (11 point white balance, RGBCMY tuning), so it could be calibrated. Since all the other projectors in this video were calibrated to d65 white point it would have been very hard to compare the X5 to them since it doesn't have a true color management system. That said, if you don't plan on getting your projector professionally calibrated and don't have the tools to do it yourself there isn't much of an advantage to having a CMS, so the X5 is probably still the better option.

    Great comparison! Personally I have the optoma UHD35STx and love it, but not sure it would compare with these? For anyone planning on gaming, I highly recommend optoma especially for their ultra low input lag when playing 1080p 120hz (if I’m not mistaken, I believe they actually go as high as 240hz on 1080p) but as you said we each have our own needs. It would be awesome if you would make a video showing HOW to professionally calibrate a projector for color and everything else, including what equipment we need, etc. I’ve been using projectors as my main TV for a decade now but have no idea how to calibrate beyond what looks good to my eyes.

    Calibration is 60% expensive equipment and 40% art/skill/experience. I think for 99% of people it would be better to pay a calibrator $600-800 to come out and get it done rather than buying $5000 of software and equipment and spend months learning to use it.

    Fantastic video! The amount of work you had to put in to make it is impressive! My only nitpick is that if these are “premium” projectors then how would you classify ones from JVC and Sony? I’m curious to see your numbers and observations from those projectors. In my case, I use an older JVC for movies and premium streaming content and a Hitachi LED projector for TV and sports with some lights on. I would consider replacing the Hitachi with one of these for the 4K viewing but need very flexible placement options to make it work in my room.

    Thanks for another great video with really thorough testing! All your tests are very helpful. Q1: In the sharpness and focus test, I am wondering how come some single DLP projectors can show color convergence kind of issue when displaying b/w fonts. I mean there is only one mirror per pixel, and it is the color wheel that changes the color so there should not be color fringes in theory. Is it possible that the picture was not exposed long enough? Q2: Do you plan on doing a similar test for mid-priced projectors (>$500 and below $2000 perhaps).

    Hi, I have an old acer H6510BD 1080p 3000lumens , do you think the Mars Pro would be a significant upgrade in terms of resolution/brightness/sharpness/contrast? or do you think i need to go higher to a Epson 5050 in order to visually see a significant difference in quality? I am in a small basement on 100" 1.1 gain screen. according to reviews the acer tested at 2500lumens, even if advertised at 3000, its supposed to be 550 to 1 contrast but again I am not sure how it would compare to the Mars Pro? Also i have my acer calibrated per some youtube videos and brashness is lowered in order to make be best picture and contrast, and according to reviews calibrated lumens comes in at 1300, much lower then 2500. If I were to go by the numbers I could find, 2500 , so 500 less lumens but laser with increased resolution, and higher contrast 700+ vs 550, do you think the Mars Pro would be perceived visually as a significant upgrade? Or going to a 5050would be required for a much higher cost? By the way , your videos are supper impressive both detailed but also easy to understand you have a skill of taking very complex subjects and walking through an explanation that anyone could understand. Thank you !!!
