The reason why its less smooth is because it has more internal seals something a pursuit doesn't have

Smooth as in "gears feel gritty" that went away when the reel was crank under load and gears got to mesh better.

Thanks for the review. We have 20 spinfisher V11 6500 bailess on the way to replace our V series that we have used for the past 9 years on charter. After more than 900 charter days, we have only replaced bail arms, due to users winding the swivel tight to the tip and forcing open the bail. The original drags are still functioning smoothly and all are still working great, hence sticking with Penn

Very Nice reel, I find it interesting that they upgraded the main gear to Brass from CNC aluminum on the SSVI, I think halving the stronger gear will make this reel last longer specially if fighting bigger fish. Thanks for the chance in the giveaway, great tear down video!

Do you think the Brass main gear from Spinfisher 7 (Vii) would fit Spinfisher 6 (Vi)? If so, we can just swap the gear for the older version (Vi) :)

I like the egg shape handle on the spinfisher too.

It will get smoother as you use is more often. That is what happens to most of my Penn reel.

I really like a follow up on the field test on the single drag stack compared to the double stack.

Nice review, those Penn brass gears take a few months to smooth out, they always start a bit rough. My SSVI6500 started real bad but now it's as smooth as my shimanos. The brass gears is definitely a big upgrade in the smaller models.

Penn gears in general need alittle time to be broken in and settle in order for it to be smooth. It was the same issue with the pursuit 4.

Ahh.... the classic Penn reel color combination. Unmistakable and my go to for inshore fishing.

This reel will serve you well for years to come.

I find it interesting that they used the egg shaped handle. They normally use a ball handle on bigger reels like that

how does the main gear size compare to a similar sized spheros or Saragossa? Do oyu think Penn gears are smaller than shimano and daiwas?

Hopefully this is an improvement over the previous model on the drag. But the brass gear is certainly a nice upgrade.

I don't know about you bro, but I like a solid feel reel when I hook up yo something big. Penn reel does have that feel to it.

Bass is still preferred and i don't know why they change it to aluminum. Bass has been the gold standard and i sm glad it's back.

What is your opinion on the gouge in the spool by the line clip. Do you think it could interfere with line lay or casting?

The oscillation system is responsible for line lay (being good or bad) and in terms of casting I don't see it affecting the casting.

With that extra seal on the reel, no wonder it's tight on the movement!

Very good reel but I love the penn percuit 4and the most important part of the reel its the drag system.....dont get me wrong penn has been manufacturing fishing products for almost 50 years

The Penn Spinfisher V has bottom and top drag stack. The Spinfisher vii has only a top stack to reduce the weight but has better gears and sealed bearings.

I like Penn reel for one reason, they just work season after season.

All in all, Penn reels are a solid reel for rough use.

For me, Penn have been a long time companion. I like the toughness.

the best thing about penn included this reel is the ipx rating! period!

That is a very comprehensive amount of seal on this Penn reel.

I heard Penn reel need to break in before it become smoother. Not like shimano which is smooth right out of the box but will produce some play down the road on heavy use.

I imagine this will last a long time especially with the main gear upgrade.

You just gotta break it in a lil bit and it’ll get a lot smoother

Not much upgrade but the brass gear is definitely a plus.

I think it's a bit rough and not that smooth is due to the additional seal. Hopefully it will break in.

Not much upgrade but all in all, Penn have a reputation on making some tough reel.

For a $200 reel, i reckoned it is good value for what you get.

I can said you wouldn't go wrong with a Penn reel.

The brass gear is definitely an upgrade I prefered.

Not the most innovative reel company but it certainly is a tough build reel for tough situations. 💪

The Kasking Kapstan series is almost as good as the Penn Authority and a class above the SSv

I will take brass over aluminum any time of the day!

Penn might not be the lightest or smoothest but it sure can take a beating.

Does this reel have a spool bearing ?

ur probably the only guy to give penn a chance after trying daiwa and shimano 😂. Penn reels are for abuse and banging around, they feel like junk to me.

They are! Just that peen needs to incorporate more into their reels like shimano does
