2023 Acura Integra 6-Speed Review: It's Fantastic, Stop Complaining

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2023 Acura Integra is a wonderful car, just like the 11th-gen Honda Civic it's built on. No, it's not a faithful, modern replica of the DC2 Integra Type-R that the Entire Internet seemed to want, but quitcherwhining because this is a fabulous, nice little sport sedan. Acura tossed us the keys to a 2023 Integra A-Spec with 6-speed manual transmission for the week, and while we really liked the '22 Civic used as this car's base, we loved the 2023 Integra even more.

FINALLY, someone who understands what the Integra has always been!

Obviously both of you weren't around when the Integra was new. I've owned the three generations of it new. It never shared an engine with the Civic, and even in performance trim, V-TEC three lobe from, they kept the displacement different. They made the interior share not one item, and look completely different. However with Honda closing 3 plants in Japan and have restricted production space, Ohio is the only place that can build the new Integra. That plant has cost and engineering limitations. My past 3 generation Integras were Engineered and built in Japan. At the time, Honda had money to make those differences. It doesn't anymore. Here's the Issue, there's not enough difference between the Si and A-SPEC to justify the extra $8k. However if they would have equipped it with the ACURA exclusive SH-AWD, it would have given it the unique identity to justify buying it over the Si. Currently the A-SPEC is collecting dust in dealerships vs Honda selling every Si over sticker price. You know what made the launch of the new Integra go flat? The gaslighting of Acura's marketing department and reviewers wanting to keep Honda giving them press cars, and that it turned off a lot of legacy, potential customers away. If Acura gave a more humble marketing, and would have said that due to cost and engineering restrictions, they gave it their best. But instead, they try to tell lifetime customers that the cars they had in the past were bare minimum rebadged Civics. Customers like me have bought Integras since 1987. However should I have no opinion? I love when someone who never owned an Integra gaslight me. All the fiasco would have been cured by giving the A-SPEC manual AWD. That little change would have made a difference. If cost and unavailable engineering made it prohibited, they should have kept the ILX name, and instead of calling it the manual transmission and sport trim A-SPEC , call it the Integra trim. As a respectable homage. How bad is the market for the Integra? My brother bought one at invoice with the manual transmission, because the Si was over sticker and would have cost him the same amount of money. Even if you disagree with my words, the fact that you can buy an Integra at invoice, and a Civic at mark up says it all.

Spot on. Excellent take and great video. A two-door with a wing would've been a deal breaker for me. I put my name down in early 2021 for the Integra. As it turned out, I got a text from my Honda dealer telling me that they got an allocation in on a white Honda Civic Si. Not even an hour later, the call came in from Bloomington Walser Subaru-Acura that my Integra was ready for delivery. I had a choice between the two. It was a no brainer. I bought the Integra 6MT A Spec. Absolutely no regrets. An amazingly fun car, and I couldn't imagine a better daily driver in the city.

Thank you for the great review. I used to have an Acura Integra 1993 (manual) when I got rid of it with 152,000 miles. Great reliable car, but the latter years it was BIG repairs. I was living in CA traffic and it was just getting horrendous with a stick shift. I learned how to drive stick shift and drove manually most of my life, but after CA traffic I switched to automatic and not have gone back.I am in Florida now. I am glad that Acura is back in with this new version and currently in the sidelines if I should get this version. My main issue is not having a spare tire. As you stated it does not have this - Honda has done the same with the Honda CRV 2024 Hybrid since I am thinking of getting two vehicles. I know is because they want to economize in weight and add more mpg. I am not comfortable without a spare tire, even if they give me a compressor and spare tire plug sealant. Although, no more cross country driving from coast to coast I recalled that in two occasions I had flat tires and was able to change it and move toward a Honda or Acura repair shop. Also you would also be at the mercy of AAA if for any reason the sealant did not do its job. I love the new Integra and I know is not just Acura doing away with the spare tire, but is like flying with one engine across the Pacific. I will definitely need to think about this.

Apart from that, the 6-speed manual in all the Civics/Integras is just so amazing and special, it’s worth $8k alone over the competitors. What a fun driving experience. I think there are a couple issues that have nothing to do with the quality of the car. First, the people that bought them new are all in their 40s and 50s now and not really the target market for this type of car. So they grumble a bit about power, luxury, etc. things that at their age are more important than they were 25 years ago. Then you have the second group, too young to have ever bought one new and raised on the "Type R" in video games, etc. They have no idea the Integra was always just a nicer Civic for Yuppies. Neither criticism is fair. I think once it sets in, both camps will come around to see the value of its current interpretation.

I just bought a '24 6MT Aspec Tech. The two things that bother me about the car is 1. no spare tire and 2. no Homelink. The spare tire was rectified by the dealer installing one in the hatch with the jack kit as part of the deal. (There is room for the spare under the hatch floor. FYI, I had to do the same thing for my CPO '18 RDX.). But the fact that the Civic Sport Touring comes with Homelink and NONE of the Integras do is extremely annoying. Not to bring this up again, but the whole introduction of this car reminds me of the Chris Rock/Will Smith Oscars slap. Acura reviving the Integra as they did - Chris Rock making the joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Regrettable choice and they should have known they were going to take flack for it. Fanbois demanding Type R performance right off the bat - Will Smith’s slap. Complete overreaction that’s uncalled for and just makes them look like giant jerks and haters. I think both Acura and the car community bear responsibility for all the misunderstandings when this launched. Acura should have been able to better gauge people’s expectations and standards for the Integra nameplate and temper those expectations appropriately, but at the same time, enthusiasts gotta realize we’re just lucky this isn’t a CVT-only crossover, for goodness sakes. My Mazda3 was definitely the better choice for me personally, but I’m still glad this is here and I hope it does well for Acura, especially with the manual.

I agree that the new Integra appears to be a nice sporty entry level luxury sedan. And it's true... the Integra was historically a gussied up Civic. But the big source of disappointment is that the Integra, mainly from the Type R, became a legendary nameplate. It's a nameplate that should have stayed in the Acura vault until there was a design that could live up to what it has become. And the way Acura teased the return of the Integra name didn't point to the upright compact luxury profile with a big formal grille that it is. I'm willing to bet that this car was designed to wear the ILX name until someone decided at the last minute to call it Integra to cash in on the return of legendary nameplates such as Ford did with the Bronco. (Can you imagine the uproar if Ford just made a slightly shorter, two-row version of the Expedition and called it Bronco?) I think another issue is that they made this new Integra a cut above the Civic Si not by improving on what the Civic Si already provided, but by reducing the Civic Si to make the new Integra seem like a mechanical upgrade. Perhaps this would have all worked better if they introduced the new ILX, I mean Integra, with the Type S to back up what the Integra nameplate has become to so many people. Also... Integra nameplate + CVT = more disappointment. Regardless of the actual history of the Integra nameplate, the undeniable fact of the matter is that damage was done and Acura has an uphill battle.

Enough with the gaslighting and reading from the marketing press release. 1) my first car at 16 was a new 1987 Red Integra LS. 2) It had many differences between the it and the Civic. Did not share a interior or exterior part. From 1987 till 2001 never shared engines. Integra was a DOHC on base levels, and SOHC in Civic Base levels. On the High performance levels, depending on the generation, the engine size was 1.7 to 1.8. on the Civic it was 1.6. never shared an engine! Now, if Acura Marketing was honest, and humble, and said that the wanted their entry sedan ti desirable, and mentioned that due to engineering and cost restraints, they had to share production line in Ohio, so big differences was not possible, people would have given them some slack. It is obvious that they are riding on the Integra name to pull on heart strings and nostalgia. Add snarky new reviewers gaslighting people, just to keep getting press cars, hotels, dinners and ride alongs, hurt the Integra's chance on having success at launch. In Los Angeles, they are just collecting dust. Unlike the Si that is selling at mark up, they are discounting the Integra manual. Here's a opinion from someone who owned all three generations of Integra's. It looks great. I have nothing to say about the styling. The Interior is fine, but at $37k, it should have rear air vents. More importantly of all is, it should have been AWD. It should have had SH-AWD, Acura's trademark. That would have been a reasonable difference to have. But it gets worse. A TLX Type S will only be $2k more in Base price compared with the upcoming Integra Type S. The TLX also comes with AWD vs FWD on the Integra. New Integra is good car overall that was failed by product planners and marketing promoting nonsense, gaslighting their loyal lifetime customers when called out. The result is having them piled up unsold currently in Acura dealerships. I convinced my brother to look at one today. He loved it and the dealership sold it to him at invoice. At Honda, the Si is selling over sticker. Acura, and Reviewers really hurt the Integra having a fair chance. It's important to listen to the customer. I grew to like the new Integra, only because I gave it time to get reviewers gaslighting out of my mind and giving it a chance. After driving it, the only thing it's missing is SH-AWD. It would have made people step up from the Si, and spend the extra cash.

Hi Carlos! You're really convinced I'm gaslighting the entire internet, huh. That's quite a big accusation. This is just one guy's take on the Integra, and I happen to like it a lot. Yes, I know the early cars didn't share engines and body panels but they were "hotted-up Civics" in spirit which is still the formula on this car. Literally no manufacturer is going to tell you they built a new car based on limitations and budget, that's the recipe to not sell the car. But it's easy enough to suss out given they only gave us a five-door hatch. AWD is unnecessary in many cases and dulls the spirit of most cars so I'm personally glad they did not include it here. It's been used as a marketing exercise to convince everyone they need it in case of a light rain. Perhaps it'd be more helpful on the upcoming Type-S, but still... personality. It's so wonderful that you think I'm saying nice things so I can go on lavish Acura and Honda press trips and drive all of their cars often. The reality is that they've never once invited me to any trip or car launch and I get mayyyybe three cars a year from the two brands combined. Further, if a car sucks I'm gonna say so. I've done it with several videos on this channel when the criticism was deserved. And guess what? Those brands still send me more cars to review and may invite me on a trip or two. They want the criticism and in many cases expect it. We are not an extension of their marketing team, despite your insistence that we are, and rightful criticism will be levied against vehicles so deserving. But the new Integra doesn't deserve all the hatred thrown its way from other randos on the internet so I said something. Hope you had a great holiday, be well.

@@OutMotorsports Here's what's going on with Acura dealerships in Southern California, where we were the first in the Country to embrace Japanese cars in the 1970's without prejudice. I went with my brother to Honda and Acura because he wanted a fun, under $40k car. We went to both Acura and Honda. The Civic Si had a mark-up, the Acura was piling up with Integras collecting dust. At the Honda dealership, they were mentioning what customers were saying. Acura is not listening, gave them a rebadged ILX, and then gaslighted the customers when people didn't like it. The Civic Si looks and has the spirit of a traditional Honda. It's because of that, the demand is high for the new Si. When we went to the Acura dealership, they sold my brother the A-Spec manual at the invoice to get rid of it. They said Acura dropped the ball without listening to the customers. All three, the Honda Dealership, Acura dealership, and I, agree the Integra should have been called the ILX, and call the sport trim manual transmission, the Integra. The ILX Integra, instead of the Integra A-Spec. People would have been more accepting. They said Acura has committed to the three letter names, and that it's very obvious they are milking the Integra name. The legacy and new customers are smart consumers and know the difference between genuine, and milking nostalgia. The new Integra is a great car, but it's not an Integra, it's an ILX. Go to a Honda and Acura dealership in Los Angeles, they will both tell you Honda dropped the ball on the new Integra. Has nothing to do with how nice the car is. It has to do with the oblivious milking of the name, and the customers are not having it. Most people's point is, if you are going to use an Iconic name, give what the customers want. The Si has never had a four door until the last 8 years, yet people welcomed it with open arms because it looks and feels like a Civic. The new Integra, regardless of how competent it is, does not feel like an Integra. People forget that customers do know what they want, and failing to do so would hurt your sales. That's why Acura declined so much, until recently. There's a new beginning at Acura, they just failed with the Integra. Recently I watched the Everyman Driver review of the new Integra, and brought up some fair facts, and we're not harsh with criticism like me. Anyway I said all that I wanted to say. And when it comes to cars, I'm very passionate. I grew up at the glory time of automotive journalism. Now, they're at the mercy of manufacturers more than ever. And print is dead.

The road noise is definitely better than an accord, and certainly than a civic. Road handling is great (800 miles after purchase I had to take evasive maneuvers around a bozo driver - the car did EXACTLY what my mind's eye wanted). Road trips are a pleasure. My nephew recently got a Tesla. When he first bought it, he couldn't wait to show me how well it accelerated. Two months later, he called me to ask if he could just drive the Acura around a bit because he missed the driving experience. If you want crazy flat speed, it's probably not your car.
