I put running boards on both my tacoma and tundra to keep the stupid people from dinging my doors in the small parking spots.

That’s the best reason IMO. A lot of times running boards are a pain in the ass but I feel better knowing if someone opens their door too far it’ll hit that instead

Agreed the step is a must. I've had mine for a few months now and cant imagine it without it. I also see all the post about the plastic breaking but I have manual seats and seems to be mostly happening to owners with electric seats. I have the Rhino RB20 and love them, they also help my 4 year old daughter be able to actually get in the back seat.

The Go rhino rb 20 slim have a metal trim rail at the top that make it hug the truck. They are pretty slim if you don't want a bulky step. They also have an optional step that you can add to the rail for each door. I have a 2022 double cab sr5 and noticed immediately that the seat would wear as well as the plastic edge that pops each time i slide out (I'm only 5'6") i do like the look of the running boards though so i got the original go rhino rb20 that's a little wider. It comes in 2 finish options. A regular textured metal and a bed liner coating that makes it more expensive. I like holes that allow fo dirt to fall to the ground. They are super easy to install. (You can do it by yourself pretty easily and quick)

I put predator steps on my 2023 trd pro, it was a must for me as my wife had difficulty getting in. I do agree the truck looks better without steps, but until there's an option for automatic running boards my predator steps work great and I find it easier to swing my leg around the individual step vs full running boards

I love the electronic ones on my platinum. Like you I love the look without seeing them. And have any step to help get in without rubbing that seat is a plus. But being I’m 5’3” I needed something and I’m glad I got the electronic ones. And anyone that gets on my truck thanks me for it.

I have the 2022 Solar Octane Trd Pro and I like the option #3. Bias since that's what I had installed on mine. Like the close body look plus the protection they seem to offer if your off roading (doesn't affect ground clearance as much with a hanging steps do) anyway love the truck and the videos!

  • @Chris-C-Ohio

Mark, Like you said lots of options out there . The predator step design makes the step hang lower so for me I didn’t want to snag on anything while on the trails. I like the low profile tucked in look. So I went with the Toyota version I think it was option 2. It kinda looks like rock sliders side view. Plus it’s OEM and it took 10 minutes to install with the help of a friend. Should also note that the hardware is already on your Tundra. So if you buy Toyota side steps you just unscrew the bolts under your truck. Hope that helps.

When I got my 22 platinum with automatic running boards I thought that it was a waste and didn’t need them. I really didn’t but I fell in love with them, made it so easy to get in and out. It’s pricey but I’d spend the money and get the Amp boards. I checked into it when I thought I was going to get a pro and yes you will need something with the pro. I found a video of a 22 pro with them at a dealership in North Carolina. But I have decided to get a solar octane Tacoma. The tundra was just more truck than I wanted. Good luck!

Option 3. I’ve had my Pro for about 2 weeks and I definitely feel the same way about the higher seat lip. I feel like a child sliding out out my truck. Good thing is that my truck came with them (option 3). Bad thing is that they weren’t on the truck when I bought, so the dealer is trying to figure out how to replace them. They seem to have been lost in transit.

Good option if your looking for the look he is going for. Sadly for me this is not an option, I live in the SW and take mine off road a good bit, past experience with powered steps in this climate is a no go if you go off road like I do, the sand and dust ruins em.

Nic Vid. I'm waiting for AMP to come out with the power steps. After installing the factory TRD lift on my '22 Limited, it's now 5 inches taller than stock at the driver and passenger seat. Now I'm worried not just about the seat, but how my wife and other passengers will be able to get in comfortably. I've contacted AMP and they don't have anything yet, but they are working on it.

Out of the 3 options you mentioned, I would personally go with option #3. Sure they are the most expensive but I think they look the best. I also like how “TRD” is stamped into it and I like the non-skid linex type material. It’s the most expensive, but it is a real quality part as I have installed a few at my dealer. If you are really worried about the look of the truck, the retractable amp research steps would be great! Doesn’t ruin the look of the truck and you get a step so win win. Only downfall is they aren’t cheap…

Get option 3. I have them on my 2022 Limited and I highly recommend them. I don't understand predator steps. They hang low and sounds dumb but you got to aim your step to make sure your foot gets in there. They clump mud on them and just aren't as functional as a flat stepping platform. I live in Montana and the sides let the snow and ice melt into the slots cut in between. The only complaint I have is rocks get caught in those slots so you have to spray them out when cleaning or pry them out with a tool. They do tuck up higher then the predator steps and easier for my wife to get in and out of the truck.

So... I have a 2023 Army Green 1794 that came with the retractable side steps. Prior to my purchase I would have been neutral on the steps. After having the retractable ones I would recommend going that direction. They maintain the no step look while having the benefit of the step. Also, being retractable they may come down further than a fixed step because clearance is no longer an issue and of course better clearance than even a high fixed version. Thanks for all your videos as I have watched a bunch prior to and after the purchase of my tundra.

On my 5th Ford. This one has factory power running boards and I love them. I’ll be replacing it with a 1794 with the off-road package. Can’t get the power boards with the off-road package. Amp says they will have them out in ‘23 and I’ll definitely be getting them. The power boards still give the look of none which is great and split the difference between the ground and the truck way better than regular bolt-on boards. Great for my 5’1” wife.

I bought a barely used 2021 tundra with the n fab steps and liked the look but was ver disappointed with using them mostly with new passengers They just don’t have enough stepping area and felt very flemsy I purchased the go rhino steps which have four mounts instead of three and give a huge area to step They also look like they will prevent door dings from careless people I am very happy with go rhino and have no regrets I also would like to comment on sparks parts who you heavily promote I like their prices but when a part came damaged it was very frustrating getting it replaced In the end I was so pissed I just sent the damaged/used part back to them Hope I get my money back but the process was brutal I have purchased many products from them but with no phone availability it was very frustrating to say the least Love your content Keep doing what you do

The last gen Tundra offered something called a "w-drop step" side rail in the XSP trim. I don't live in the coastal areas where they offered that trim and the local dealer was not allowed to order them, so I had to order them from a dealer down there and have them shipped to my home. I don't know if they make them for the new gen, but they are a sort of lower profile step. They look great on my 2020 and the angles flow with the shape of the truck since they were specifically made/designed for the Tundra. You might google them and see if you like that design. I'm 99% sure they are made by Westin for Toyota since they have some that are similar looking.

I went with the black TRD boards on my truck. They are aluminum and will likely last the longest in the rust belt region. They have a very aggressive grip and attract debris occasionally. I will warn you, do not miss the step getting out. I did that a couple of times over the 1st couple of weeks with shorts and sandals. Your calf takes a beating. Pretty much draws blood. You will quickly learn.

I put the N-Fab Nerf Step RS on mine, they have a nice wide step. I don't care for the look of the ones from the dealer. If i decide to keep it I may upgrade to the Amp Research PowerStep XL, I have these on my Tacoma and love them, they are built tough!!

Stay away from the TRD ONE . I have it on my 1794 . Its so hard to clean even with a pressure washer. And it looks dirty all the time.

I just purchased a 2023 sr5 with the tss package and notice the seat issue immediately. Mine came with the pre installed predator steps, I don’t mind them. I just feel awkward using the steps because I’m 6,1

I like the trd running boards but they don’t really give you an easier step it’s basically the same height as the truck so for me being 5’10 I prefer the predator style which have served me nice on my 22 tundra
