For street riding the R7 is much better. Makes nearly 20tq more at 6,000rpm. You can't always rev to the moon in town for power, and it fills that spot perfectly. It's also only 0.1 seconds slower to 60mph than the R6. Granted, they should've kept the R6 as well. It's not a replacement, but it fills a spot the R6 didn't fill very well.

Yeah it literally makes no sense. If you're going to be in that cramped position, you might as well enjoy the extra power of a 600cc supersport. The whole point of this class is to make a bike that's more enjoyable (aka upright) on the roads.

@@jordanjoestar8839 I’ve had an R6 for the last 10 years. I have commuted on it into a major city. I ride on awesome canyon roads and coastal Northern California roads. I run it to redline all the time. I keep hearing people talk about how it’s hard to keep the bike in rev range. I disagree. I have no problem staying above 10k RPM when I’m having fun on it. The problem I have with the R6 is that it’s uncomfortable for more than an hour and it’s torture riding 2 up on a mountain with even a tiny passenger adding weight on your back as you slow or ride downhill, or heaven help you …. Slow while riding downhill. The R7 seems just as uncomfortable, and has half the power. To be fair, I also drive a high revving car and have no problems keeping that in high range either. So, maybe I’m just practiced at it. You downshift …. It’s not magic. You just downshift. You keep yourself in a good RPM range when you slow. Heel toe driving or rev matching the throttle on the bike as you downshift …. No big deal.

They'll probably make the same mistake with the R9: give it R1 erogs but have around 110 hp. I think all people want is an MT09 SP with plastic.

If someone has only ever ridden low powered bikes or only rides around town/city then fine (though why you’d chose to torture yourself with the R7’s riding position to do that I don’t know) but on any decent road it’s just far too under-powered. It’s aimed at learners and commuters who want a bike that looks like a proper sports bike but is easy to ride and doesn’t scare them, which is absolutely fine, but let’s not pretend it’s a proper sports bike.

As soon as I sat on the R7 I thought "oh great so I have the wristy discomfort of an R6 but none of the power or suspension or brakes." Riding a demo bike confirmed this.

I think that Yamaha would have been better off putting fairings, new rearsets, clip-ons on the MT-09 SP and making the R9. Might be a little too cheeky for the track, but you get all the low-end without losing the top-end.

And the aprilia rear shock is bad that's why it's been changed out . Honda would have scored better if the rs was running standard!

Love the Honda CBR650R best of these bikes. Makes a fantastic road bike and great fun to play with those revs. Also much cheaper and more reliable than the Aprilia 💰

sorry but the Honda is the most boring bike in comparison. No equipment and zero technology. In addition about 30 kg more weight.... When you sit on it, everything just looks simple and cheap. felt zero innovation

I can definitely confirm that the RS 660 is comfortable enough for touring, I've just done the nc500 on it with my camping gear and panniers.

I can confirm the Honda CBR650R is great for touring. After 2,700 miles chasing my son and his Ducati V4S to The Austrian alps and back via unrestricted Autobahns even loaded down with a fat 56 yo on his first big bike and 2 panniers and about 20KG of luggage it was brilliant fun, stable all the way up to max chat (148 MPH indicated) and beautiful around the twisty alpine roads. Even doing over 4 hrs per day and over 6 on one ot didn’t break me or leave me not rating to get on it the next day! If I had the extra £3,500 for a new RS660 over my 241 mile 6 month old Honda would I have one, possibly not as a 6ft overweight oldie I think the Honda is more comfortable on tour but will still do me a my first track day with my sons mate a MotoGP test rider!

Thanks for putting this video up guys I can see all the work you and the team have put into it. The three bikes that you have chosen for the video are absolutely perfect I’m a great fan of a middleweight sports bike, keep the videos coming I love watching the MCN vids that you guys put up.

I own a 2019 Honda CBR650R. I felt the same about the engine lacking low-end grunt and wanting a bit more sound so I got a Akropovic titanium exhaust - baffle removed, a Dynojet Power Commander, and a tune. It now makes about 100 HP and a bit more torque down low too. It’s still not as punchy as my 2018 Yamaha MT-07 (also with an Akropovic, PC, and tune - now makes about 80 HP) but it’s got enough low-end to be usable on the street and it’s a much better highway bike than the Yamaha. The Yamaha wins around town and in giggle-factor.

Tied a mt09 didn’t like it. Dont like look of mt 10. Saying that the 22 model is a bit slicker But I’m a Yamaha guy. Am going to go back and get the 2010 r1 with the cross plane and just keep it forever

I've also heard changing the sprocket in the front to have 1 less tooth will also add a lot of torque down low, or at least make it more available down low. I really want the cbr650r as a nice commuter bike that I can also just have fun on. Seems with an exhaust and a tune, it hits that no problem.

Im Planning on dynojet tuning my cbr650r, have u had any problems after doing it? And how do u feel thé torque ( im comin from a mt 09, didn’t like the sensation of the mt)

Done shade over 1150 miles on my rs660 and confirm that it is a great bike for the road. I came down from an rsv4 expecting to be disappointed but so far I am enjoying swinging a leg over the RS. Its more comfortable, more forgiving, cheaper to run (averaging 67mpg) and the tech is phenomenal.

im considering buying a tuono V4 for when i get my A licence. i got A2 now and riding on a 600cc xj6. but im considering the tuono 660. is it really worth the extra to get a V4?

@@mala7794 I've never rode the tuono 660 but I had the v4 factory for a couple years and it was the best bike I've ever rode. Absolutely amazing engine. If you love mid range torque it might be the best.

Ya, dreaming about a rs660 as next upgrade to my SV650 but whenever the two locals with their goddamn tuono 1100s ride by with that V4 sound I just wonder if half that engine will give the same hard-on response from my body :D

Fantastic job of presenting the bikes. Great video. I’d have a Tuono 660 and love it. I think the Ohlins shock upgrade would be the icing on the cake.

Whilst I'm always disappointed if Neevesy isn't the main presenter, I think Dan's presenting skills are really coming on and I this is his best video to date - he's developing a natural style and this was a good quality review 👍

Aprilia Quality sucks. If you buy this bike you better have a dealer nearby. The dealer network is lacking. Check engine light almost guaranteed on this bike as new. Honda reliability all day long and a big dealer network. The 4 banger is robust.

I've got the Honda cbr650r ive owned it just over 12 months now and it's been a fantastic bike and it's reasonably priced as well.

gotta also put in the maintence intervals where cbr is about 4000 more miles on valve checks , and spark plug s triple every three checks on the rs660 is two on the cbr and r7 is 26k interval but more spark plug replacement

Great review. Nice to see some less familiar faces on the channel as well. The Aprilia however, didn't look as well made as the pictures might suggest in the metal. Very pretty, and extremely compact. Still, the problem is always the same with Aprillias : I have only one local dealer and they were so obnoxious I didn't bother getting a test ride. I knew that the probability of having an issue was perhaps higher than with most other brands, and I didn't want to have to deal with these folks if/when it happened. Sad really.

Hi Dan good to see a fresh face with good presentation skills and what appears to be a fair test between these bikes. I am old school and with my height/weight/age have something a fair bit different being the 2019 Suzuki Katana and absolutely love it. However I reckon and agree the Aprilia would be a lovely second bike to hit the corners with 👍 Thanks again for the review 👍

What people want is something like an MT09 and Duke 890 derived supersports... That way you keep the power of 600s but usable on the road too and without the extreme clip-ons and pegs positions.

If youre talking about from purely a hp, top speed, and torque perspective of having those bikes fully faired theres a reason all the manufacturers are not making things like an R6 anymore. The in between market of people buying liters and hitting tracks and people wanting something fun for the street that can also do a track day here and there (nakeds you named and these 600s). I don't see companies going back

@@KimmyR3 Unfortunately, not everyone can have a road bike + a track weapon so people go with what gives them the best compromise. A powerful and comfortable bike for the road that can perform on a track (supernaked) . But you can't deny, fairings make bikes look better and perform better (aerodynamics/ wind deflection).

@@linopontes you can have a comfortable (upright) super naked with 200HP, but you will almost always prefer the supersport on a track. and likewise, you can have a fast supersport on the road, but you'll prefer the super naked on average. You don't even need the power on the road. they're polar opposites, there's no bike that's ideal for both. yes you can take nakeds on the track but the ergonomics are off for track riding that even the smaller R3s and Ninja 400s are better.

@@KimmyR3 yes I have heard that too. Still, if they want to sell it in big numbers I suggest they make it into a sports tourer or a special limited edition track weapon similar to what KTM did with the 8RC (supersport with the 890 engine).

I remember that time when my grandfather and father were riding 250 cc bikes that had 50+ horsepowers and they were screaming like you were going mach 2 :)...... For people that love that era, a 600 that doesn't blow your mind is a bit disapponting ...... Not that most of us will ride the wheels of the new bikes, but there is a feeling that they lack compared to the old ones that just gave you a thrill that you will not get with the new ones.

To me the R7 sits well below the old 600's. If Yamaha get around to making an R9 with the triple, and can finally invest in the brakes instead of parts-binning them, then they'll have a very special bike on the market.

If the R9 has 140hp and CBR650 erogs I'd have one. Sadly I think it will have the same power as a Tracer 9, not enough for a 900cc sports bike.

@@alexmoja3042 only the kawi 636, duc 848 evo and daytona 765r made 120 whp. The r6 , ninja 600, gxsr600, all made 110-115 whp with the cbr600 being weakest in class at 105-110....... but this is more of an sv650 vs gxsr 600 comparison. The SV650s makes 70 just like the r7 the gxsr600 makes 110 just like the r6 the only difference is suzuki still sells the gxsr so peole dont confuse the fact there different classes of bikes.

yeah. i actually loved the 90s' 600 power delivery. very 2 strokeys. you had a silent and fuel efficient commuter up to 5000, and if you wanted power just drop two gears, at 8000 you had a screaming missile. like having two bikes in one. anyway, the thing i really really want back from the old days is a larger tail: these skinny folding-seat styled saddles are not enough to even keep papers, emergency tyre sealer, and a disc locker. it's not that i want a SUV load capacity, but c'mon...

Great review. Nice to see we've still got some sporty middleweights that are quite practical too. Hopefully the other manufacturers will get in on the act soon as well. Rumours that Kawasaki have got something up their sleeve with a new ZX4 & Suzuki supposedly have a new faired & naked parallel twin engined SV replacement coming out in the next 12 months. Also talk of a mass produced KTM RC890 & maybe Triumph will get in on the act too with a Trident RS or something. A very interesting resurgence of the middleweight category imo.

Is there really anything more than rumors on the R9 yet? Stoked for that bike to happen. ZX4R was slightly more than rumors already I thought. They registered a vehicle code for it with some entity here in the US? Can't decide which one is cooler, love both concepts..

@@kleinbottled79 Yes true, the Yamaha, Suzuki & KTM are unconfirmed rumours, the Kawasaki ZX4 is definitely happening & the Triumph is just speculation on my part. The question mark over the Kawasaki is which countries it will be released in. It looks 50/50 for Europe at the moment but should be fine for pretty much everywhere else apparently.

The CBR650R is the best one here, especially with its super smooth and sweet sounding 4 cylinder : )

The first 100mph lap of the TT was done on a Gilera with 60 to 75bhp apparently. Many of the people I meet who claim 70bhp isn't enough, could not manage a 100mph lap of the TT. Even with 150hp at their disposal. Puts things in perspective a bit.

Still riding my 2006 zx-6r 636 ninja. Had it since new and it’s been an amazing bike.

I quite liked this video. Dan you've made a big difference since you started mate. You used to seem nervous and a bit off to me but this was great. Nice one. I'm not sold on all the bikes though. I like the RS but the CBR is a bit boring - it isn't a lot different to the late 90's era CBR - and the R7 is just a commuter in a frock - might aswell be a CBR500 with a big bore. If we're going to lose the 600 4-pot class thanks to it being completely track focussed I think we at least need to see something else thats trying. The RS seems like it is - its got its own engine albeit derived from its big brother - and it seems like a good, genuine modern sportbike.

Great video helped me with my Aprillia purchase.

Honda/Dull Yup. It runs through all their vehicles. It will do every thing faultlessly, be ultra reliable, survive some neglect, but for some reason they always feel like appliances.

When you can only get to the 5-hour-away track a few times a year but still want to look like a racer, this is the segment you look at. Comfortable on the road and still amazing on the track. The twins give you the low-end you want on the street. The Aprilia is a Cadillac compared to the R6. Liter bikes are just not practical for the streets anymore.

Another great buy would be a nice tidy used cbr600f4i. Similar riding position, good suspension for road and track. Then lastly has great power, not as much down low but still the bike I'd buy with my money

Refreshing to get an honest opinion about the bikes. I remember the days when the magazines wouldn't say anything bad about a bike for fear of losing advertising. Great review - keep up the good work. How about comparing the RS660 and the RSV🤔

Will be upgrading my ZZR600 next year and l am sold on the Aprilia. Looks BRILLIANT and havent see a bad review yet. Can not WAIT to get it

Why Honda place 1??? zero features, bad sound, 215kg, when you sit on it everything looks cheap. Honda is heavy and only engine + frame. She felt zero innovation. No Tempomant, no mapping, no adjustable chassis, nothing. For me Honda place 3!

@@14489 i have for 6 Years a R6. In compare to RS660 it is the last Trash on the Street!!! You have only power in the first gear... in second gear you are far outside the legality. These bikes are for the track only. They are the last piece of trash on the country road. At the corner exit there is no torque and zero power if you don't always drive in 1st gear. I am significantly more agile and faster on country roads with the RS660. R6 only has an advantage on racetracks and speeds over 150kmh. The sound of the Aprilia's airbox is great, if you had driven it you would know it. It also rotates up to 11500RPM.

I love the sound of the RS600, reminds me of my old track-tool SV650.

I own three 600s. GSXR, ZX6R, Daytona 675 and eventhough they are all over 10 years old now, would never give them for any of these crippled sport bike copies. I love their agressive geometry, preakyness and that there's actually something happening between 10 and 16000 rpms.. They are so much fun to ride. And if I want comfort and touring capabilities, I jump on my VFR800 with panniers and top box, heated grips, ABS and cross Europe with ease..

Here in Australia you can still buy a new gsxr600-750, There are plated R6s around from 2020-21 and still available a brand new ZX6R with the WSSP colour scheme. I think also possible to order a Honda CBR600rr from the dealer. So there's still some models available here and the US but not in Europe that is for sure. I understand why market is going towards these gutless bikes. But I prefer to keep the touring bikes separate from Supersports. Just like you wouldn't go and try to eat a steak with a fish knife 😉

@@alexmoja3042 my fifth bike is a dual sport. Yamaha WR250R from 2015. 32HP plenty of fun in the Aussie bush 😁 This bike also got wiped out of the European market many years ago. We're so lucky here Down Under that Euro standards don't apply. You can still buy a new DRZ400 SM which I also had previously but sold it a year ago. There is still a Kawasaki KLR650 available brand new in dealerships,, which is real ancient bike but super reliable and indestructible. You can cross the continent with it any time. Unfortunately these values in today's bike world are not so relevant anymore. Companies just try to sell, high number of units, multiple bikes on one platform, a massive electronic package with 2 or 4 catalytic converters, and carbon canister built in the system and make them quite as an electric bike, and prone to fail due to high specifications, and complicated engineering.. Anyway we've to enjoy the older, raw bikes as long as we can IMO..

Finally a no hype review with anything with a cp2 engine in it ,I fell for the hype on a new mt07 a few years back, very disappointing after the reviews boring engine crap handling suspension brakes and build quality

Bought the 650r 22 mod last month and must say I’m surprised. I took it to Italy from Norway the first day I bought it, about 2400km. It performs well in all areas and it’s a good all around bike.

I mis the super sports. Always had great fun with them. 1000's too much for the road. These are not enough, and there's not alot on between. Maybe a Ducati Supersport. Maybe time to buy a 1000 naked. Hmmm..... Good video again!!

I've got a '19 CBR650R nearing 30k kilometers, just done a two-up summer tour of 2000km in two weeks. Daily it throughout the year and am absolutely in love. It perfectly ok comfort-wise having done 8hr ride days, agile for the city, and I don't know why or where I'd need more power and it's not killing you to insure, register, and service.

People complaint about it torque. Is it that bad? What are your thoughts?

@@ajaxsid9034 no issues, it kicks in for real around 4,5-6k depending on gear. In that range it screams all the way to 12 and you'll be doing 160kph in 3rd gear before you brain figures out the complication if you're spotted by cops. You can also ride it very smoothly and quietly in the city/calm roads around 2-3k, it won't explode but it will pull and it makes it work for commuting. It's a bit twitchy on really low rpm 1st and 2nd but nothing horrible like liter bikes. Tl;dr if you find an empty straight and want to have fun - drop a gear, twist it for all its got and just enjoy the spectacle you won't be dissapointed. The really strong torque starts to drop off around 110-120mph in higher gears - and this is in no way a street/non-track issue but if you're looking for something to track extensively then Aprilia would probably top it (or a dedicated 600cc supersport)

I have the Tuono 660 and absolutely love it

every new video I watch about the rs660 comparing it to other bikes of its class/ similar, just confirms my desire for one for the road/second track bike xD (I already have a track prepped cbr600rr but the thought of using that on the road to commute makes my wrists and back hurt lol)

Cb650r chiming in, the inline 4 in the Honda bliss, enough torque down low to zip around and plenty of headroom to open her up. Was interested in the Triumph Trident 660, but heard the ride by wire was quite muted. I was keen to try out the aprilia but my $2600 cheaper.

I think the idea behind the R7 was to make a cheap sportsbike, that would become excellent with a little bit of money and a lot of aftermarket parts which we all end up doing anyway lol

The CBR650r with a fender eliminator would look so beautiful. What an awesome bike.

Looking forward to leveling up someday. But my CBR500R is great for city streets and day trips.

Love my CBR 650r , Great everyday ride. Great video and well honest. I was looking at getting the Aprilia 660 but as a Honda fan went with the cbr.

What an absolute blockbuster of a review!!!! Congrats team! This is an amazingly well done video =D Regarding the bikes themselves, I was super close to purchasing an R7 myself. My problem is that I had to replace my FZ6 fairly quickly and I bought an R6, but I was super close to purchasing an R7, RS660 demo ride pending. So super happy of seeing this great production dissecting all three bikes, and while the CBR650R feels to me like the half-caffeinated sportsbike, it is still a fairly competitive contender so. Thank you for all the info!! =D

For comparison the RSV4 did a 1:06:03 around the same track.

Only 4 seconds slower with only half the engine and probably half the price! And much easier to ride. Impressive. Even the Honda a 1:12 and the Yamaha at 1:13 are good bang for the Buck! And less tiring.​@@motorcyclenewsdotcom

@@ianwarren i think the track is small and tight, which not an ideal for big heavier rsv4

I really like the RS660, but for my money I'd have the CBR650R. There's something about the way I fit on it and other Honda sportbikes that I don't get with Yamaha or Aprilia. I'm about 6'2" and I even fit well enough on a CBR1000RR that with a couple mods, I could use it for touring.

Yep! Have this same experience, no idea why but the ergos on Hondas (except the later gen CBR'RRs) just work for me. Bought a 19' CBR650R, threw bags on it, it's great! Make sure to budget for better tyres, but comfortable for long rides & through twisties & more than enough power

Yes - I am 6'4" and had the previous model CBR650f and it was comfortable. I tried a test ride on the RS660 and while it was great fun to ride, it was just too small and cramped for me.

Awesome review (as always)! Which would you pick between the Honda CBR 650R and the Kawasaki ZX-6R?

Im curiouse what was the lap time difrence beetween the bikes .I have honda 650r i was wondering if i put cartridges front and rear shock on the will it keep up with the aprilia

I road every street bike in the 90’s to 2015 everyone loved to power and front end stability of the GSXR. Honda for the looks and reliability. A lot of us liked the look of the Yamaha but didn’t trust the front end. Especially the R1. But add a steering stabilizer and it helped a lot.

Love my rs660. Definitely the best bike for me!

These bikes are right up my alley, and yet none of them really grab me. Maybe the CBR if I needed one bike to do it all. Seems like a good all rounder. R7 is a little over priced for what it is (USA pricing). Aprilia too high tech and too Italian.

I've heard both cbr and rs are pretty comfortable for a sportbike, but which one would be better for longer rides? (184cm/6ft rider)

Aprilia doesn't have the reliability of the other ones. For street riders who keep bikes for 3+years that's a big deal.

Reviewer failed to mention when explaining what a lovely bike his RS660 long termer was didn’t mention the reliability (oil leaks) issues he had!

It's more the electronics I'm worried about. But yes, you don't see oil leaks on a 40 Year old Honda very much.

I’ll Take the Suzuki GSX-R 750 all day long!

Because the Aprilia dealer network is lacking and bikes are plagued with issues. Buy a Honda and be happy.

Even tho I love Italian bikes, both Aprilia and Ducati, their reliability is not the best out there, also the price of RS 660 is 4 grand higher at least in my country, that is not a small diference, heart says Aprilia, but my brain and wallet say Honda, so I'm planing to go with CBR650R next spring.

@@stanleyblazeraznik6047 All brand new platform have issues. Also I guess your american, the dealer network ain't lacking everywhere mate. And in the end, if your bike has an issue, just get if fixed and use one of your other bikes in the meantime, not a big deal.

Which 600 or 1200 cc sports tourer is best for a tall person 6.2 feet tall.

maybe factor in price, reliability, and post purchase experience next time?

Wanted a cbr650 for a long time but none ever came in stock near me. Just went with a daytona 660 and I love it.
