2022 Kawasaki KLR 650 Adventure Mods (So Far): Handguards, Heated Grips, Mirrors, Phone Mount, etc..
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I've had my 2022 Kawasaki KLR 650 Adventure for a few weeks now, and in that time I've added a few protection and comfort mods in order to set it up for the kids of off road exploring and riding that I enjoy. My current 2022 Kawasaki KLR 650 mods list includes some awesome upgrades including heated grips, my Garmin Zumo XT, a Quad Lock phone mount, DoubleTake Mirrors, a Giant Loop Diablo tank bag, Tusk folding shift lever, Tusk D-Flex Pro handguards, and upgraded Kawasaki KLR 650 footpegs from IMS Products. These KLR 650 mods will protect the bike if (when) I drop it and keep me comfortable whether I'm riding on the highway, on the backroads, in the woods, or way up in the backcountry somewhere.
This is just the beginning of my 2022 Kawasaki KLR 650 mods. In the future, I'm hoping to add full crash bars, upgraded pannier racks, a metal skid plate, and more to my KLR 650. Check out my full 2022 Kawasaki KLR 650 mods list below!

Really loved the video, where is this in NH? Also where do you find trails in New England, like any sites or forums in particular?
I just sold my 2021 XT250 and purchased a base '22 KLR (pick it up tomorrow). Guess I have to give some credit to DITR for that. FWIW - i have the Double Take mirrors and they have moved on each successive bike I buy (TW200, CB750, XT250). I crashed a lot on my TW & XT in the silt and sand of CA deserts. Within my first couple offs I destroyed the glass in my Double-Take mirror. If you break the glass, they don't warranty it - you have to buy the glass from them. The glass breaks just as easily on a DT mirror as the stock; that's a thing I don't see enough folks talking about. Keep the great content coming!
Just got my new 2022 KLR. Base model with ABS. Waiting for my crash bars from Dirt Track, Tusk panniers and racks, Happy Trail skid plates, IMS foot pegs, Oxford heated grips and the DC power outlet with dual USB adapter. Stoked!!
I’m out of bend and just got a 22’ as well thanks for the clarification that most aftermarket from the previous gen will not fit the third! Traded my Harley for mine, best decision I’ve made I ride it 3 times as much
Looking good man. You can tell your excited about the new ride! Congrats man.
I was very excited when you got the same bike as me. I have the pegs/lever but not the heated grips as I am in the southeast. Rox risers brought the bars a little closer and higher for a more comfy position and I have already tested my Ricochet Off-road skid plate and it works/looks great. Have fun, love watching.
I recently got my first dual sport and It is a 2011 klr, super pumped I found your videos keep it up !
Thanks for this. Great tips for installing the barkbusters!
Nice Vid Dork. I'm watching and was glad to see you chose Tusk shifter because mine just came in. Was hoping they would fit. I can say also that the JT 16 t front sprocket fits the 2022. I love my KLR. Dealer is putting my oem hot grips on too. Keep up these updates because I'm doing mine at the same time. Thanks man.
Nice, thanks for the video...good stuff. My first mod on my KLR is with the shifter lever. I bought the lever from Happy Trails. I think its a little bigger than the Tusk which helps to fit my size 14 boot. I'll be doing the the same pegs and mirrors you've installed, thanks for the tips. I also have on "preorder" a centerstand from Happy Trails made for the 2022 KLR. They tell me should ship in December. Keep the videos coming!
I love the new bike and the mods...can't wait to see it in person.
The quad lock is the best phone holder for the bike IMO. Have the same setup on my Africa Twin! One of the best parts of owning a bike is modding it lol I’m looking forward to seeing the KLR progress to where you want it to be!
Great mods & wow, what a beautiful mountain/forest backdrop for your video, well done. PS, I run the oxford heated grips and IMS pegs on all my bikes, great products.

Siiicckkkk. Gotta love this new content. Nobody else is covering this bike like this.
My first modification was the addition of deer whistles.theyre a must where I live and I've seen several deer already do a double take and not jump into my path.I actually totaled my cruiser a few years ago when I hit a deer going about 60 mph and since I'm religious I believe it was by the grace of God I wasn't seriously injured.in fact I wasn't injured at all.ever since then any bike I own gets deer whistles on day one.
You got some high quality filming goin on here bud👍
As always enjoyed watching thanks for sharing 👍

The KLR is quickly becoming a Dorkabke beast👍🏻 Ride on!
Classic upgrades👌 Hows the device bar for vibration?
Great Stuff Dork. Got the exact same bike with most of the same upgrades. Question - why wouldn't you use ever use the rally lights? I find them very useful day time driving for extra visibility for the motorcycle-blind drivers on the road and for night time use especially when going down old logging roads. Try them out! Cheers

I love my Quad Lock! I've got one on my Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe.
You are making me really want a new klr..thanks alot..lol
Dude!!! Thank you so much for the foot peg link. I felt like the factory one's were going to fall off. Lol. Also I appreciate the fact you don't ask for $ support other than using your links. Others..... want support right off. It's like where I live a person holding a sign at a stop light wanting help when there is a McDonalds sighn 15 ft away with a $500 hiring bonus. Lol. Thank you so much for the channel and what you do! And yes like you said give my klr a chance. I like it better now.

The footpegs were kind of a pain to put on but they will fit. It's just hard to line everything up with the spring tension. Just a heads up
Great recommandations for mods. One thing I couldn't work out on my KLR were the Tusk D-Flex handguards, whether the regular nor the Adventure model. I just can't find the position on the bar to mount and align the clamp. I'm trying to get some Barkbusters instead.
Man, nice one of the first things I did to my new KLR is to replace the stock hand grips with some pillow top grips, what a difference, next will be those tusk handguards !

I put the Koso Apollo heated grips on my G310GS, expecting them to be a nice luxury farkle. I use them all the time and love them! Been riding since 1975 and this is the first time I tried heated grips. They should be standard equipment.

@@DorkintheRoad got em on my V-Strom and they're great, but I can't stop riding the KLR 😄
Great info did you remove the air box snorkel ?
Hey internet riding buddy. I picked up the Tusk D-Flex pro handguards for my 22 KLR just like yours. It looks like you used some type of spacer to help with the fit and the original bolt. Where did you get the spacer? I'm struggling to get a good fit and already snapped off the stock bolt on the right side. Any help for a fellow dork would be appreciated. Love the channel!
Mods are looking good! What size Tusk D-Flex Pro fits your klr? I saw they have an option for 7/8" or 1 1/8" bars.
Thanks for the update Dork! Does the mount for your Garmin XT charge it as well like the phone?
@DorkintheRoad
2 жыл бұрын
The mount doesn't, but the USB cable does. You can wire it up to charge from the mount but the USB is so easy I haven't bothered
LOve the video, just want to point out you dont need to wire to your bat the wiring harness has a builtin plug and play connector under the dash for your heated grips!
The fog lights give a lot of ambient light in deer country.
Do you feel that the "Factory" crash bars are good enough? Are you going to replace them? Your correct about the pannier manufacturer. What do you think about those? (Other than the fact that you're replacing yours with your larger bags.) Lastly, what about a taller, wider windshield? Any thoughts
Thanks for your useful resources. Cant find the exact name of hand warmers. Is it Adv or Touring? Thanks
When you go on ,long hauls up to a month what spare parts/ tools would you recommend carrying? Are parts available world wide for your bike?
Dirttacks products are pretty popular in the KLR650 community. They have Pannier racks out now. Hopefully they will releases a 2022 version of their wrap around crash bars.
Could you elaborate more on what kind of bending you had to do with these Tusk hand guards? Was the bending necessary for these to work with the bike?
What do you think of the stock crash bars that come with the adventure ? I am so close to putting a deposit down. The rear of the bike is what concerns me the most as I will be doing most of my riding without the rear side panniers.
Great vlog, thx! Was the KLR's 1/2 price of a Tenere 700 the primary reason you went with Kawasaki over Yamaha, were there other factors? What about suspension, I understand for 2021 the KLR was stiffened (so many complained the previous generation bottomed out), so is it now strong enough for moderately aggressive trail ridding, what is your weight?
@DorkintheRoad
Жыл бұрын
I went with the KLR because I couldn't get a Tenere...and now I have a Tenere and no KLR. Suspension is adequate at best, but it's still softer than I'd like at 260 pounds.
I heard a lot of people say those k750 tires will surprise u offroad {in a good way, LOL} when aired down to 19 rear 22 front. Not buying til spring, but will probably keep those stock tires one for awhile then switch to Tusk Dsports
Did handle bar vibes increase with tusk hand guards? I use klr to ride 150 miles to hunting fishing cabin. Not looking to get vibes
I ordered a set of the Tusk handguards, but just realized I ordered the D-flex Adventure Pro model. I hope they don't give me any troubles.
Very cool.
Great video, how difficult was the install on the hand guards?
@DorkintheRoad
2 жыл бұрын
Not difficult. You just have to futz with it a bit to get everything to line up. I did have to bend the inside ends a little to get them to fit flush.

Im about to do my first oil change on my 22 KLR and my question is, when should I change the doohickey and spring?
Hey Ben, well done video! From one former Africa Twin owner to another (good job taking off your accessories BTW, I gave too many accessories away free as mine was significantly farkled), now that you've had the KLR for a minute, to what extent are you feeling a difference in performance between the AT and the KLR? Simply said, is the KLR feeling sluggish in comparison, and if so, how are you feeling about that? I know you recently rode the Tiger 900 Rally which has AT like performance. I'm interested in your comments because I am giving some though to a KLR.
@DorkintheRoad

I talk about this a lot in next Monday's video.
Hey bud, what sort of fuel tank range or fuel economy are you getting out of the KLR?
Hey Dork! I’m waiting to pick up my 2018 crf250l Rally... Anticipating mods, I’m wanting to add some daytime running lights (possibly Amber) to the front for extra safety precaution, mounted sort of like the fog lights on your new klr... Can you suggest the best way to wire the lights? should they be hooked straight to the battery on a separate switch? Should I tie them into the headlight? Should I use the accessory wire that will also be used for the accessory plug? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
@DorkintheRoad
2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I'm not a great guy to ask about wiring stuff. I've never wired anything like that up myself
Excellent video. I’m just super worried about my doohickey, it’s all I think about whenever I ride. Just knowing my doohickey could fail at any given moment and my entire engine will explode is nerve racking. I have the Kawasaki four year extended engine warranty, but still worried it will fail and leave me in the middle of nowhere. What should I do?
@DorkintheRoad
2 жыл бұрын
They don't fail suddenly, from what I've heard. It wears out over time. Even Eagle Mike himself says you can wait 5k miles to do it
Do the Tusk D Flex hand guards hit the auxiliary light button on the 22 adventure model? Did you have to do something to avoid that happening?
What’s the next big touring bike to put in the stable? Maybe a Triumph Tiger 1200?
I have an Africa twin 1000, I want to take a klr650, as a second motorcycle for traveling alone on bad roads, to buy or not?
I picked up a longer/beefier shifter from Happy Trails Moto. I would really like to move the footpegs back an inch or 2 as I think they are to far forward. When I stand on the bike my body wants to fall backwards and so I have to keep constant pull on the bars.
@DorkintheRoad

Yeah constant pull on the bars is bad. It's how I ended up with stupid tennis elbow.

Do you know who makes a heel toe shifter for the KLR 650? My feet are size 18 and 4EEEE wide.
rode a new one home from the dealer today I also bought the adventure.
If you buy the touring oxford grips they are .47" shorter than the adventure grips. So shouldn't require any trimming. Have not gotten mine yet for my 2022. Will confirm after install.
Do you use heated gear? If so, does the KLR push enough juice for it or will you have to mod?

@DorkintheRoad

Honestly, it's fantastic. I cranked up the preload and rebound on the rear (which is insanely easy...you just need a 10mm socket and a flat head screwdriver) and it handles me and my weight just fine, even hitting big potholes at 40+. I weigh 260 at present.
