You touched on all the important parts of riding a KLR. I've ridden a handful of KLRs over the years and a year ago when I decided to get rid of my BMW K75 and replace it with a dual sport bike the KLR was one of four machines I was considering. The first really long ride I did with the KLR was on a 2009 model. Even at 6'3" at the time (age has shaved an inch off) I could easily flat foot the bike but it felt tall none the less. My Himalayan never feels tall. And I immediately noticed the extremely wide bars. So wide that my shoulders were burning at the end of the day. I got used to the wide bars and they were great for control. The KLR felt top heavy. And it was. But it operated smoothly and had plenty of power for the kind of riding I was doing. But that top heaviness kept me from any single track riding. Something I have done with the Himalayan because it is much easier to manage off road. Not that I have any business anymore riding off road at my age. But those tracks still whisper to me. One other thing I noticed was wishing for a 6th gear. I've had the same wish with on the Himalayan. Fast forward to last January when I was making a decision on a new motorcycle -- a 2015 KLR, a 2009 BMW F650 GS, or a 2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan. Despite all the slow and boring comments I read online, the Himalayan ticked all the boxes for me. And the one most important for me was how it looked and felt. Like an old pickup truck. Rough and tumble and not something I would be afraid to take into the muck. If I were younger and stronger I may have made a different decision. But I don't think so. I'm glad I chose the Himalayan.

KLR 650; cult bike over here in England and I believe over in the States too. Not had the pleasure of riding a KLR but I have owned a Honda SLR 650, not in the same league as the KLR, but along the same lines with less plastic. Don't think I have the confidence to take the KLR on some of the rougher trails I take my Himmy on here in England. That's not to say the KLR isn't capable, because in more skilled hands than mine it defo will be. A great machine Jeff; I'm certain you gonna be delighted with it. Really enjoyed your first impressions video of the KLR 650; presented with your usual enthusiasm, energy, knowledge and impartiality; great work man. Ride safe Neil

As long as I've been around the KLR has always been in my side eye but never on my radar until I found out it was going to be reintroduced for 2022 as a Gen 3. I picked up my Adv Model like you have there back in Feb 22 and have loved it ever since. I used mine as a daily commuter here on Oahu and love it. For me it's very comfortable stock but I've made a few ergonomic changes to improve it even more by adding 3/4 inch bar risers, slightly taller windscreen with along with an adjustable angle riser to help with wind deflection. Grip Puppies over factory hand controls are also a great cheap way to isolate some vibes between the hands and rider. Those stock tires even on the street only lasted 5k miles but I replaced those with some awesome Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires and those are night and day when compared. Overall it's a great bike if you can get past not having all the wizbangery of the latest rider tech. Aloha

I have a 2022 KLR and traded my Himalayan in for it. Best move I ever did. Its more comfortable, faster on the highways, better on the trails, and most importantly more reliable, along with a better dealer network. I am one of the few but I like the look of the Himalayan better. The reason I traded my Himalayan in for the KLR was its awful reliability. Mine broke down all the time.

Not a bad looking bike but those boxes and front fender leave a lot to be desired. And seeing it's $2000 more than the Himalayan and a little over 200cc's larger with only a 10hp increase and not as good low end torque, I think the Himi wins out. Now, if you're doing more highway at sustained highway speeds then maybe the KLR gets the edge. Ultimately though, it all comes down to what YOU want out of an ADV style bike. Cheers! 🍻

But KLR has that personality that when I get into rough stuff, it just chug along and never fails. I fell off it on NEBDR recently, it took four weeks for my ribs to heal. My partner and Good Samaritan passing by, dragged KLR out of the woods. No damage. No bent levers.. Started right up and kept going. While I love my KLR the supertanker as I call her due to her huge tank and as you stated it's a big bike and when you add all the luggage she becomes a handful when running around off-road. Every KLR tractor I've owned I've had to do mods to the engine, unlike my Himalayan. When it comes to doing the valves it's a little more complicated since there are shims you will have to order, it's not going to be a simple pull the covers and measure and adjust with a wrench and screwdriver. Another issue the KLR suffers from is that clutch if it's been sitting for a bit you will find that the plates will dry out and they will stick and it will not matter if you go out and start up your engine every once in a while they will still stick and you will have a big surprise when you start her up and with the clutch pulled in drop her into first and have the bike lurch and die due to the clutch sticking... you will need to check prior to take off if she's been sitting for a bit. This bike needs to be ridden on a regular bases. With that said I will probably sell my ole' gal next summer and will probably get a Hunter 350 or Scram but that's next year.

Like you I owned a Himalayan. It’s a great bike and I spent a lot of time getting it equipped just the way I like. Recently Kawasaki released the KLR 650S for shorter riders. I’m 5’4” and I’m 70 years old. I live in Canada on the eastern side of the Rockies. I wish I could spend all my time on back roads and gravel roads but it is just not possible. I like to explore ghost towns and remote places but often I’ll need to ride 500 miles in a day on pavement. That means the little Himalayan spends the day almost pinned. For me I’d like a bit more power. The new 650S is very close to the same height and weight of the Himalayan. Yesterday I put a down payment on one.

After three months in the shop they bought it back, I LOVED the bike not the service, should have been an easy fix. Anyway I bought a 2022 KLR, yes they are similar feeling but the KLR cruises at 80 mph no problem where as the Himalayan can not, but the Himalayan is lighter off road, I do wish I still had it I should have said the heck with the warranty and just picked it up and fixed it myself. A long time ago I owned a KL250, the smaller brother of the 650. I friend of mine had the Z1000 at the same time and we both experienced the same problems: the bolts are brittle. In the 3 years I had that bike (from new) it sheared off 5 bolts, the Z1000 did the same. Any time you take a bolt off either replace it or at least grease it before putting it back in. I did see a video recently of the KLR650 and the youtuber there said the same thing. It seems it is a problem they haven't addressed. I did have a test ride on the Himalayan. I have some knee problems and the footpegs are set too far back to be comfortable for me, so I opted to buy the Meteor. The seat height of the KLR would be a deal breaker, I have a 28" inside leg so a 34" seat height is going to give me trouble.

Yeah, 2.5krpm and higher sputter is generally not a problem on my 2018, but I have the KLX mod, intake, and exhaust mods. I imagine someone will figure out remapping the computer on Gen 3. My Gen 2 has about $3K of upgrades to suspension, exhaust, brakes, bash stuff, chain, etc. It'll hit a hundred and cruise all day at 85mph, if you have to. I went in to the dealer to buy the 2022 Himilayan and walked out with the 2018 Camo KLR, 3402mi, 18mo left on extended warranty, upgrades, original parts, new spare parts, Kawasaki KLR soft luggage, and owners maintenance journal. Its was exactly the type you dream of buying used. Turned out the prior owner had been buying KLR since they came out in 1986. He knew what mods to do. He traded it in as his hip had told him no more tall bikes. I had used gen2 that was a little long in the tooth and I dropped it 3X the first two weeks I owned. I'm only 5'9" with a 29" inseam. I rode the gen2 for about three years until it was stolen. I immeadiately got a vStrom 650. During COVID my alternator went on my vStrom near the beginning of COVID and I let it set until I got the KLR. I LOVE the KLR. Its a blessing sent from God as I had told myself no more KLRs as they are too tall for me. This one is about an inch shorter so I am on the balls of me feet and not tippy toes. I dropped it once after about six months of riding. Just this week I repainted the the bash bars where they hit asphalt.

A video on another channel showed 2 guys in the Utah back country. A KLR and a Himmie. The RE went every place the KLR did and it looked much easier, especially if you drop either the Himmie would be a LOT easier to upright. I test rode one the same time I test rode the Meteor. I bought the Meteor. Looking towards a Himalayan in the next few months.

Could not pass it up(KLR) AS found a marked down 22 model in July of 23. Had a KLX 230 I traded in. I am one of those getting back into riding after years off. I was surprised when I first rode it. I had been hearing how slow, sluggish it is. At my 67 years I am happy with power. Weight is more of issue. But height I have already gotten over. With the new Redwing boots I bought to ride with, I can flat foot it on both sides. I have tuck, rack and 37 litter hard bags.( Never empty) that may help with height. I have not gone more than 120 miles on a trip, one way yet. I have lost some mpg doing more 70 ish mph then doing less (about 65ish). I am looking forward to weather cooling and getting my crash bars( ordered) and installing hwy pegs. As of now I believe it to be all the bike I need. As time goes on and my age does I can see where I may wish for a lighter bike.(dr650 or crf 450RL) with larger tank. I got a good deal and on nothing but SS glad to find it. Having wind screen and rack was money saved also.

I'd commented on your channel awhile back and I personally said as much as I liked the Himalayan, I just wanted that extra power that a 650 brought to the table. I think I even said if the RE had a 500cc engine I thought it would be large enough to do what I wanted to do with it. Those reasons are why I went with the Gen 3 KLR and I'm very happy with my purchase. My brother has been eyeballing the RE Scram 411 and for what he wants to do with it I think it would be close to perfect. I do disagree with you that ADV bikes need a spoked wheel though. I think a cast wheel will work fine for 90% of ADV riders. Yeah you need to go slower on rough terrain and the wheel is more prone to damage...but we need to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge that cast is just fine. We want spoked wheels for the look and that's OK. I ride a KLR that has a 6 gallon tank and I carry a 5L jerrycan on it, not because I need that extra fuel but because I like the way it looks. That's completely OK but I don't need to lie and I shouldn't feel the need to lie to justify it. Cast wheels will work just fine on an ADV bike.

I like the look of the Royal Enfield better, though I'm hesitant because the nearest dealership is an hour and a half away, and I will be doing my fair share of longer distance riding and its highway performance is kinda lacking.

I have both a KLR and a Himalayan, I'll say this: if your long distance riding will be moreso on the freeway, the KLR will be better for that. However, there are better bikes for that than the KLR. I'd personally prefer to stay off the freeway as much as possible, which is why I went with the Himalayan. The KLR will be better off road, but if it's height is a concern, you'd probably be more comfortable on a Himalayan. I'm 5'8", so no giant, but I did get comfortable with the height of the KLR after a few months, both on and off road. Both are fantastic bikes, but overall I prefer the Himalayan hands down.

KLR with a top heavy weight, aka center of gravity being much higher, to take it in really tricky trails, himi will win all day along and even experienced riders will have less number of falls in Himi vs KLR in similar track. Then comes the next thing in many situations off-roading what you really need is good and solid low end torque to tractor you out of tough situations, especially when you encounter steep incline. So Himalayan wins hands down if requirement is not highways. Of course KLR better for Highways, but if thats the requirement, there are better cruisers out there for that job, *by the way are you aware of RE Shotgun 650 - thats a really sexy bike, have my eyes set on it expected to be launched, this year end*

Fast forward to the past couple of years and I was looking for a bike to replace the FZ6 as my primary rider (big bike) and I was really leaning toward a modern classic like the RE INT650. In June I got a Suzuki DR650 that would give me the classic feel in a more rugged package that suits my overall needs better and am very happy with it. The KLR would probably be better for long rides on the interstate, but I avoid the interstate anyways. I like the DR over the KLR mainly because it's almost 100lb lighter. I'll send over some pictures by email, since I know I had commented on searching for a new bike in past videos.

As to if you own the wrong bike it depends on what you hare planning to do with it . The Himalayan is quite a bit cheaper than the KLR so you have some wriggle room for improvements (seat and possibly suspension) so you can tailor the bike to your needs and still be in pocket.

I have owned a couple KLRs (09 and 11) and a couple Vstroms (04 1000 and 18 650 ADV). Have also spend a fair amount of time on the HImi. Full disclosure, I am a delaer, and have the opportunity to ride a lot of bikes. As some of you have heard me say, the choice of bike has much to do with the mission for the bike. If your mission is to ride great distances on the freeway to do what you want to do, Vstrom is the better choice. KLR is a better gravel bike, and Gen 3 is a better road bike, but still not great on the freeway. Himi is great on gravel and back roads, but lacks power and stability for extended higher speed road/freeway riding. As far as I am concerned, almost every true adventure bike is top heavy, so pick your poison. Himi feels lighter because it is lighter. Gas mileage on these bikes is debated a lot. My Vstrom 650 will do from 45-68 mpg, depending on speed. My KLRs would all do 40-55. The last Ronin ride, our Himi did around 68 mpg, but none of that was at freeway speed. In terms of crusing range, all these bikes are capable of 200+ miles on a tank unless you hit the freeway. How long do you really want to sit on that seat? LOL! It is a very good thing to have some great choices in this category. Best wishes and ride safe!

Hi David! How would you compare the KLR to both the V-Stroms(650 and 1000)? Seat height/handling/power/comfort. I had an original carburated SV650 and I loved that bike and the v-twin. Now I have a new(to me) 2013 KLR and I simply love it. But I was curious on your take on the KLR vs. V-Strom since you seem to have some experience and I was considering the V-Strom at some point(either one).

  • @davidewart3949

    @davidewart3949

    Жыл бұрын

@@nandutzu The seat height for the KLR is similar to the VS1000. The VS650 is a bit lower and more compact to the pegs. Ergonomics for me were best on the 1000, but the KLR is very good. The VS650 is good but I need to fiddle with bar risers to make it a better fit when standing. All three bikes have comfortable ergos. Depending on what year of any of these bikes you buy, you may not like the seat much. For weight, all three are pretty porky if you are thinking about dual sport aspirations. For me the best power to weight compromise and gas mileage was the VS650. In terms of pavement handling, the VS bikes handle a bit better due to the wheel and tires sizes. The KLR is measurably better on gravel and dirt for the same reasons. None of the three has enough ground clearance or suspension depth to suit me, but that is not a deal killer unless you are doing very rough trails, deep mud or sand. Obviously, power is best on the 1000, fair on the VS650, and workable on the KLR. The reason to buy either 650s has to do with weight and agility. If you want to do any degree of two up riding, or have a full load of luggage, the 1000 is best. At this point I have gone with the VS 650 for less weight, better road handling, better all day comfort, and acceptable gravel road handling. Your decision comes down to what is your mission for this bike. Mine is to ride long distances and still ride gravel. Yours may be more local, or two up, or semi-off road. All three are good, reliable bikes. All three are compromises. Best wishes and ride safe!

Nice review OMR! However I have to disagree that the power of the Himmy is similar to the KLR. I've owned my '21 Himmy for a couple years and this summer test rode a KLRS, and there was no comparison -- the KLR midrange power is far beyond that of the Himmy, and twisting the throttle at 55mph, the KLR will leave the Himmy in the dust. I plan to sell my Himmy in the spring because I'm doing more road riding that I anticipated (80 miles just to get to the area I like to ride), and riding the Himmy at 60+ mph for more than 25 miles gets old pretty fast, especially when I have to pass someone on a busy two lane highway. The Himmy is probably better off road, but that's not my thing because all we have here is sand.

Maybe it depends upon where you look. The 2017 KLR actually makes more torque than the Himalayan. It also makes its peak horsepower at lower rpm than the Himalayan. Maybe the gear ratios are a factor. The 2017 KLR actually is 7 pounds lighter than the 2022 Himalayan, although the weight is probably carried higher. KLR has a much better dealer network and a huge aftermarket of parts and accessories. My three biggest problems are the cost of KLR, the seat height 35” vs 31.5” and the fact that the KLR is just butt ugly. I own a 2021 Himalayan and am trying to cure it’s shortcomings as best I can. More torque and more horsepower needed. The reliability has been about what you would expect on a cheap bike.

I used to love the klr back when I was in a country were distances were short, I rode my friends klr 2022 and honestly I was desperate to get back to my bike.the klr felt underpowered, heavy and awkward in every way, and axlot of head buffeting!. Kawasaki had the opportunity to redo the klr from the ground up and they went backwards, heavier than before. Sorry but not for me anymore! Is easier to pick up my 1200gs from the sidestand than the klr!

Take the bikes on a highway for a decent stretch and one bike will stand out as the more worthy one. 'Nuff said.
