Glad it helped and just make you sure to take it into your dealer. I do have a few follow-up videos on this, and Kawasaki will fix the problem. My only suggestion is make sure that they just don’t change just the torque, but they also change out the bearings. As soon as they did that with mine, it was back to normal, it’s still a great bike.

@bodeanaventures I will ring the owner of the bike shop I bought it from tomorrow and see if they will do it under warranty. I'm assuming my model will have this issue potentially not recognized. It had done 1800km when I bought it

I’ve had my 2023 Adventure for 2 months and like you, I thought it was a “me” issue. My bike exhibited the same exact symptoms whenever the front suspension would load. Had my dad take the bike for a quick ride and within 45 seconds he noticed an issue with the steering. I brought it in to the dealer I purchased the bike from and they disassembled everything to ensure the bearings and racers were not scored (read about it on a KLR forum post). Luckily, there were no hardware issues. They put it back together and re-torqued the steering nut and it’s as if the bike is completely different, in a good way.

I’d be filing a compliant with the NTSB. If it is a known issue from the factory they are liable. The reason they dont want to tell the dealers is they have to pay the dealers to fix the problem, labor costs. Glad you got it sorted.

Yep. 3,000 miles on my 2023. Got in April. Still fighting the steering. When I reached out to the dealer they gave me the run around. Even said I would probably have to pay for the repair if I want the bearings checked. Kissed me off so I just been riding it. Slow speeds suck. Now that I am armed with this information I am definitely getting it fixed.

Hi from Australia. I bought my 23 in Febuary. It's an ML and had the steering problem. Dealer eventually backed off the top nut a little bit but they did not test ride it. Even told me that maybe the issue was not the bike.😅 Ended up pulling it apart myself and fixing it. The top bearing was not greased only a smear on the race. I don't think you can say you have fixed it properly if you are only backing off the nut it needs to be inspected. Once fixed it will put a smile on your face to ride it without the problem. We just want the bike to steer normally and that's not too much to ask. Dealer said as far as a warranty issue is concerned unless something breaks or the bike won't go then it is not a problem that would be covered. Shame on Kawasaki for not doing the right thing. It takes the shine off buying a new bike. You are good mates with the dealers when buying the bike but they are not so helpful when you bring it back.

Brand Noob here . Bought a KLR650 and it’s in the shop being looked at thanks to you . Also, I bought a Z650cc and right after the first service. 600 miles it broke down as I was leaving Destination Powersports in Punta Gorda Florida. Dealing with Adam and Zack in Service there . The stator went bad on the Z650cc. Really disappointed with Kawasaki. Zack jumped on my KLR650S and said something wrong with the steering as well. You saved my life. Kawasaki really seems to be declining in quality. 2 bikes 2 different models. Nothing but problems.

I haven’t had any trouble with my 2023 KLR S. In fact, I was surprised how good it handles. I was expecting it to feel top heavy. Surprised it doesn’t, at least to me. But hey, everyone rides little different. I’m 75yrs old and have owned 28 motorcycles. Have ridden just about every type of riding a person can do, including track days on sport bikes. This 2023 is my third KLR. Besides this bike, I currently have a 2022 KLX300 and a 2023 GSX1300R, Hayabusa. I really like this KLR.

All good now and I like you love the bike. You can see follow up videos on my channel if you like. Enjoy the KLR

Thanks for checking in and I did make a follow up video on this but let me clarify a few things. Since I made the video I have learned that not all 2023 models are impacted and they all start with ML. That said, mine was one for sure and they backed off the steering stem nut and it made a huge difference. That was only for two weeks though and it came back but not as bad. I took it back and they called Kawasaki again and they immediately told them to change the bearings too. Seems like some get fixed with just a retorque but some of those tightened to much caused a bearing issue. Not sure if they will change your bearings right away but if you get it back and then have problems again, that is it. Still a great bike and Kawasaki is authorizing dealers to fix them but you have to press. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Just looked at my SN and it has the ML, I gotta wonder if the dealership loosened and retorqued the headstock nut?? the dealership I got mine from kind of sucks, they sent me home with the wrong paperwork first time, and then I got the right paperwork and inside the manual is a blank “presale inspection” sheet. My steering seems so smooth and has since I got it, no jerkyness, no wobble.. I wonder what the bearings and races look like in there, but not about to wrench on it until the warranty is up. But I don’t want the dealership doing it either. Kind of a bind (no pun intended) anyone know the correct torque specs?

I’m not sure about any fuel pump issue. This is my first KLR and it’s a 2023. Don’t get too worried about it because if it’s a little stiff you’re gonna be able to adjust it easy and the bike will be perfect for you.

The further issue is when one of these bikes does a considerable mileage before rectification. The bearings will suffer from micro-indentation of the bearing tracks. Or 'brinelling' which is the engineering term for this defect. I recently repaired a Suzuki jeep with this issue with the wheel bearings. The garage overtightened the retaining hub nut when they fit new wheel bearings. The noise when driving the car was remarkably loud. As though failure was imminent. But to look at the bearings, they appeared perfect and as new. Google the term and see what I'm on about: Brinelling. The bearings on Every affected bike need to be replaced. Otherwise the fault will persist, but in a different way, but still faulty!

I am a former Harley tech. Recalls are issued usually if a large number of their product is affected and a high chance of injury, accident, or death is involved with said issue. Years ago now there was a fuel pump recall that Haley had it affected the large cruisers, the amount of bikes that sold with later known probable defected part was quite large nation wide. Therefor a recall was issued. Now there was a issue with the Trikes at time, kind of major issue but it didn't affect the whole line. Once we as a dealer became aware if it officially we called our customers that had purchased one form us (I think like 6 that year), and told them to come by on Saturday get a hot dog we want to check their bikes. This became a tech tip, meaning "this needs attention if the unit comes in our possession weather service or sales". It may take a while for it to be as common as the dang doohickey but in time it will be resolved. It takes people questioning and posting to make things happen. Good on you for putting some light on this. I would add something to the title about steering so when another owner goes to KZread to find a help or options it comes up for them. Oh and thank you for noting your not a mechanic or tech......I had more "I tried to install this part and" ......tickets then anything else..If you are the least bit unsure see your tech... its cheaper than having fix it afterwards. Good viedo, great information, Love the KLR committee, keep up the good work.

On commenters advise here, I have submitted a report to the NTSB -------- "The vehicle has a dangerous steering issue. While in a slower speed turn, the vehicle's steering becomes restricted, and then unexpectedly free's up, which almost causes a crash. Some are referring to this as the "steering notch issue". There are multiple references to this issue in online forums. The Kawasaki dealer says that they have not been informed of any steering issues. This bike will kill me unless this issue is resolved. I will be taking it back to the dealer for service."

I have a 23, and it had the tight steering as well. My issue was two fold. Firstly the tops steering head nut was far over torqued. Secondly, the top steering bearing had next to no grease. Once I removed the top tree, packed the bearing with grease, and reinstalled and torqued the top nut to spec. All better. If you fix the top nut torque and it still feels tight or like the front wheel is falling into a divot in the road at 12:00, you need to check the lubrication.

Recalls are almost exclusively safety related, like life and death, not “my bike feels funny”. When they find a trend they will often issue a service bulletin. So when you bring your bike in for service they would address that. It’s one of the reasons we pay so much for a dealer service. People who do their own services don’t have access to the factory information. It is unfortunate that manufacturers don’t follow the forums. There’s a lot of great information out there. Also, those surveys don’t come from Kawasaki, they are from a marketing firm.

I purchased a '23 KLR this past March and I'm having a significant steering problem also. At lower speeds, I have to fight with the handle bars to keep it straight as the front tire will wonder from side to side. At higher speeds on twist roads, the problem intensifies. I did some research on this last night and found that there other people having this same issue. I am going to call my dealer today to discuss the issue. My dealer is 191 miles away which is a real bummer. The good thing is that the service advisor is a Gen 3 KLR owner and may be aware of the issue and may get me in for service without any sort of hassle. Now, if it's overtightened bearings, I could adjust the steering myself, but, since there is 2300 miles on the bike, I am concerned that there may be damage. My VIN starts with ML.

I had my steering stem nut adjusted and it worked great. Thats for three rides and then the problem came back not as bad but still wrong. I took it back and Kawasaki immediately authorized them to change the bearings. Waiting on them backordered now. They may do the nut first and send you away but if it goes back to stiff I would take it back. Good luck and I am sure they will fix it, just a pain getting there and wish they told everyone.

Thanks brother and I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt by not telling me. But when they didn’t even put a bulletin out to the dealers, that’s what kind of frosted me about it.

Yep. People didn't believe me. Said it was the air pressure or the knobbies. Just checked and mine is an ML 2023. The dealer is going to rebuild mine. I did make the adjustment myself but I think there was some damage done already.

I’m so glad you’re getting yours fixed as well and I just wish they would’ve told us. Apparently that ML start on the serial number are the ones impacted. Let me know how it feels when you get it back. It’s like a new bike to me.

I feel a lot of things are overtightened on these bikes. I have a very expensive torque wrench(480 bucks). When I went to change the rear tire after the factory wore out I had to use a cheater bar to break it loose. After putting it all together and torquing to specs I can now easily take my wrench and spin it off with one hand. When I changed out the front a month later I twisted the hex adapter I got from 3d. So I bought a steel large one and had to hook a large box wrench on it to get it loose. And since retorque to spec I can break it loose easily with one hand.

I just bought a used 2018 and I think first gear is a little too fast But 5th gear seems perfect for cruising down the highway so I don't want to mess with the chain sprocket

Japanese Manufacturers build each countries allotments in one bunch… So once you see one problem you are likely to see it repeat… the problem is they see it as less than 3% lets say reports it, so no problem… we saw it at Suzuki cars all the time… problem would show up in Chicago but not Arizona… this issue would be more across the board but maybe just being identified and dealer memo just has not gone out yet as they verify which production runs are effected… Glad they at least admitted to it once questioned…. Bet the memo is soon released…

What I don't get these dealerships are suppose to check these bikes before they sale them. This is what you pay for when you purchase the bike dealership prep fee's. there is a check list they are supposed to follow before you take it home. I just bought a 2023 cf Moto ibex800 s and they did a check list before I took it home and they found out the right hand foot peg had a crack in it and replaced also the seat had a small razor blade cut on it which they replaced it with a new one. This is why they should let you test drive the motorcycle before you purchase it. I bought my 2016 klr 650 without a test drive didn't know what the power was like might of changed my mind but still enjoyed it very much just under powered for me I had it for 6 years I kinda miss it. Glad you you got it taken care of and the dealership is aware it. I am a big Kawasaki fan it's too bad they let this go on someone is going to get hurt or killed for this issue. Shame on you Kawasaki! You need to send a recall out for your mistake.

As a result of the over torque problem, you also need to have the bearings replaced as they have been smashed and will soon become a steering problem as well. This has also a topic you will find in the forums.

You are right on and after two good rides, it reverted some. They ended up replacing the bearings and actually did a video on it. While pissed how they handled it, they did ultimately fix if under warranty kzread.info/dash/bejne/qnyEuZuThbbfZLw.html

I have a 2022 bought new in March 22 and after 14000 kms it has recently begun to have the binding steering syndrome. As all the others, only at slow speeds and coming to a stop. My Serial number begins with "ML". Taking it in to the shop asap.

Good information. I kinda doubt that the dealer talked to the factory, probably Kawasaki USA headquarters. Language and time zone differences would be a barrier to talking to the factory.
