Kawasaki Safety Issue Update

Kawasaki has Safety Issues on their 23 KLR 650 models. I was able to be a part of this safety conversation and problems with many 23 KLR650 with the factory. The issue is with the steering and it seems to be a secret they do not want to share. This is a MAJOR UPDATE and a way to help you get the dealer to FIX IT, there is more than just the nut torque for some of the bikes. In this video you will see the safety issues on the KLR650 that Kawasaki is keeping from us. No safety recall, not telling owners or dealers. Proof Kawasaki does not care about our safety!

Mine is at the dealership and will be back this tuesday. I thought I was going crazy as well. I thought it was me, then i thought maybe bad front tire, or just an aggressive dirt tire. I was so confused cuz I had a buddy buy one about 2 months before me and his was fine. When I went in i told the dealership the problem and what you said kawasaki explained was the fix is new bearings and a re torque. sure enough they called me the next day saying their mechanic definitely recommended the bearings be replaced as well.

Good job in being determined to get a resolution that will also benefit other owners. One thing I have learned as an ADV bike owner in the last 3 years (Especially with the demand, popularity and supply chain issues most bike Mfgrs. are now facing) - ADV and offroad bikes rarely come from the dealership issue free. Is it right or safe? No. Is it still a fact? Hell yes. My T7 is a great bike and I love it, but depending on the year and the location is was manufactured, there have been various issues reported by owners. For example, many folks on the west coast were getting bikes that had no grease at all on the rear suspension links causing all sort of rear suspension issues. I have also seen a crop of folks with serious wheel bearing issues (same thing - installed incorrectly with no grease) - Point is (especially now), it pays to understand your bike mechanically at a deeper level. I have basically adopted the attitude that it is on me to fix anything outside of cracking the engine cases on my bike now. Grease, bearings, chain, sprockets, tire changes, oil/filter, electrical, suspension - etc. Personally, I enjoy wrenching on my bike, but honestly - it's because every time I have taken my bike to a dealership for repairs: A) I can fix it better B) They WAY overcharge C) They use crappy parts D) They just don't know the bike or it's quirks at all. Work or your own bike people, especially if its an ADV bike.

Just got back from the dealership they knew they had to replace the bearings. They said it was the worst they’ve seen. I bought an early 2023 KLRs in February. I just turned 1K miles and it’s had its 1st 600 mile service . I’ve never experienced any type of a steering issue whatsoever and have been to the top of Mt. Washington twice so far with it . I think I’m ok fingers crossed 🤞. Thanks for the info, I have seriously considered buying one of these. I plan to use it as a day rider and short commuter or for longer trips if I am visiting my farmer friends. It will be the first new motorcycle I have ever purchased. Out here in SD, many roads to farms and good camping sites require riding 5 miles or more on unpaved dirt and gravel. I have a skid plate on my Victory Vision, but it is very unsettling to ride a 900lb Touring bike on such surfaces. At 68, I have no intentions of doing BDR's, but being able to take a shortcut or not busting ass on unpaved roads is a plus. I will still keep the Vic (love that bike), but it is always good to have a spare. Thanks for your diligence and greetings to Pinkney. I lived in Michigan between 1984 and 1989 and did a lot of business out your way.

Mine spent the last 3 weeks in the shop waiting for parts.... that will be another month getting here. The dealer was bending over backwards to make it right (BIG props to Stahlmans Power Sports in Rolla MO, they went above and far beyond!!!) I finally got ticked yesterday and traded it in for a new bike from a different brand. Kawa has lost a customer over this issue.

This is a really well-presented technical update for us! Thank you so much for the follow-through summary. My KLR is a 2022 Traveler with add-on Kawi OEM slider bars, saddlebags, light bar, heated grips and I like it all. I basically made my Traveler into an Adventure model with a top box. The saddlebags are fine as long as you don't overload them. I also immediately added the ThermoBob cooling upgrade with temperature gage and it's great. Good luck with the warranty repair on your new machine!!

Thank you for making these informing videos, I bought my 23 KLR650s 4 weeks ago, and I did not notice the steering issue oddly until around 100 miles, then, there it was, scared me to death. My dealer said they have never heard of the issue but did say that they would take it in and have a look at it. It would take at least a week to get it back. I didn't want to lose the bike that long, so I turned the bearing nut the recommended 1/8 turn and daym, it drives like a dream! Such a great bike! Now I hope that it doesn't return. If so, it will have to go back to the dealer. Thank you again for the video's man!

Ok . I hear your problem. My klr is an 09 and had to have the bearings replaced less then 2 years old and it was not badly taken care of . By the first owner . He did them him self and they have never given any problems. It was a four season bike for years . Yep they cover things up but they all do . The same man had problems with a BMW GS . With my bike there was no grease in the bearings. He thought that he did it some way . It was Navythomas8 s on KZread. So it can be found . Just have to dig alot for it . My bike was born here and would like to keep it living here . It is a good old girl .

You make a good point in the dealership that I got this at said that basically almost all of their new bikes come in, not greased enough, regardless of the manufacture. This was more of a torque problem but still I can tell you there’s a ton of grease in there now.

I hope they also checked the bearing races as well. My friend had to have the bearings and races replaced in his KLR at his own expense. This was an older KLR so this is not something totally new at least with some bikes. There was also no sign of any grease in his bearings.

Over torque any such thrust bearing runs the risk of damage which might not show up for a while. And yes, every bike I acquire gets a full service from head to tail, and so often I find the minimal grease circumstance. Good that it got fixed. I have a 2023 I purchased near the end of June and as far as I know it was practically fresh off the freighter. Obviously, that doesn't exactly mean it was "built" after they fixed the "calibration" issue. I've put roughly 500 miles on it and haven't noticed an issue. This is all a bit frustrating, and I do wish they would have at least given your dealer an idea of the range of VINs that may be affected. I also wish we knew if the proper torque value is in fact 49Nm/36ftlb. I've heard some rumblings on various forums not to trust Kawasaki's own repair manual for correct torque values in general but who knows. 😞

I purchased a new leftover 2023 KLR 650 0 miles. First ride on it on 4/8/24 I did 11 miles and steering felt stiff and i didnt think too much about it .. Rode bike again on 4/9/24 did about 60 miles and steering seemed to get like a bind / stinking as the more i rode it at low speeds.. I took it to the dealer I purchased the bike from and the owner of the dealer rode it across the street from his dealership which is a very small parking and I watched him he was aggressively turning it back and forth and said he feels nothing.. He sorta blamed it on front tire pressure and increased front tire pressure to 24 lbs.. I rode bike home and the air pressure didnt make any difference.. My vin # starts with ML...

Kawasaki never owned up to the KLR's terrible oil-consumption problem. Local dealer in Idaho Falls, ID, also turned its back. As they say, quality is a management decision. I will never again own a Kawasaki product.

Were you able to glimmer any other info from Kawasaki about possibly affected VINs or months of manufacture since the ML thing was a bust? I'm in the same boat as you were, someone that rode pavement the last 20 years, i don't know if things I'm feeling are a potential issue or just me being unfamiliar with the sensations of riding an adv on dirt or both.

Not really and since all of the VIN's are ML according to them, they think it was during a "time period" which is all they will same. For what it's worth, if the dealer calls Customer Support, they are authorizing the work to retorque and bearings, If it feels it is binging any, you have it. When it was right, felt the same evening in cornering than my street bikes. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I got a new 2008 Ninja 250 back in 2008 and all of the M5 rubber wellnuts were rotted out months later… except for two on the windscreen that were mysteriously a different part number despite being the same size. They were the only two exposed without taking off plastics, so it seems Kawasaki knew they couldn’t hide bad rubber well nuts there and deliberately chose to use a better part for the ones you could see. I didn’t realize until after I had already had one dealer service done and I found that the dealer had already replaced two on the right side fairing, meaning they crumbled to bits and couldn’t be reused by the first service. Kawasaki was probably sitting on millions of these and decided to let dealers and end users slowly eat the cost of replacing them. The rubber over the trip reset, clutch cable, and more were also degrading. The previous year model had a recall for the rubber on the turn signal stalks crumbling away to leave dangling signals and I’ve seen many users over the years who apparently never got the recall service. They eventually updated the parts fiche so that all M5 rubber wellnuts are the same part number from the windscreen but they went back and did it in such a way that it hides that they were ever different. Still, the Internet doesn’t forget and you can find old conversations about it complete with part numbers on Ninjette (user forum). Anyway, 2008 was also when the tens of millions of tire valve stems were recalled for degrading until they’d just fall off with a catastrophic loss of pressure. They seem to degrade in a very similar way to Kawasaki’s bad rubber problems from that period. Though that was 15 years ago, Sixtyfiveford said he got a pack of 100 only two or three years ago and had to go back and replace them all since some are failing within 6 months. It seems the bad ones are still in the supply chain. I have to wonder if Kawasaki was getting their rubber parts from the same factory that was leaving out stabilizers and UV resistance chemicals. I’m not thrilled that they essentially knew about it all along and swept it under the rug for anything that wasn’t subject to a safety recall.

Maaaaan, I have a different Kawasaki, a brand new model and folks are having all kinds of issues with almost no help from K-town. A piece of the alternator can spin off and jam up your engine, apparently. It effects all 1000 of them made. They got out in front of that one, but they seem hesitant to do more than one recall on a brand new model. Its not a good look. But there's maybe three other issues that keep lurking in the forums. And guess what two of them are: Bearing issues. And if I was a bettin' man, I'd say they stem from inappropriate torquage. 2,000 miles on a brand new bike and my wheel bearings are thrashed: that's not me, that's them.

Seems very frustrating. I know the owners manual tells us to check the steering play daily, and it looks like it is supposed to be inspected on the first service at 600 miles according to the owners manual. Wonder if the dealers are checking them like they should? It sucks that they had an issue manufacturing them, but it should have been caught by the dealers, I would think.

My first concern on last video was once a bearing is over-torqued and had issues they almost always require replacement. The bearing was damaged even if it does not immediately show after retorque. Even if greased. At least your golden now. As a guy who worked with Suzuki Automotive this is normal practice. All done on % numbers. They started doing recalls and fixes by region. Imagine if the bikes going to Chicago all had the same issue but the SAME bikes In Miami never had that issue… USA is so diverse that it confuses Japanese warranty Recall strategies… Also sounds like they were just beginning to realize they had an issue and you were one of the first to identify it… Should be a normal service issue going forward and won’t return. A torque wrench on the line went out of spec and voila a stupid problem crops up… You’re KLR is gonna be fixed and life will go on. Sorry you had to go through this and it probably is an embarrassing surprise for them too…

I’m just a novice mechanic who works on my own motorcycles over 45 years. I’ve have heard of the problems with steering and the number one thing other than tires is the nut or the bearings or both.
