You simply can't ignore Chinese-built utes any longer, because they're not cheap and nasty any more. In fact, they’re not cheap and they're a lot better built, nicer to drive and more packed with driver-assist tech and other features as standard than ever before.
The Cannon X, the top-shelf variant in the GWM Ute range, top-spec, is the latest Chinese-built ute to arrive in Australia and, on paper at least, it seems to offer quite a lot for the $40k price-tag.
But is the Great Wall Ute - in top-spec Cannon-X trim - actually any good?

I'm the sales manager at GWM/Haval Port Macquarie and I've worked with premium brands for the last 10 years. I did my research and made the move. I drive a cannon-x and everyday it surprises me. Sure it doesn't have the power, ground clearance or towing capability of some of the bigger brands. What it does have is safety, comfort and plenty of gear for your average Ute owner/enthusiast and will save you $10-15k. With a growing dealer network and massive plans for the future. Rest assured this brand isn't going anywhere and i ask anyone with an open mind to come and have a test drive. Even if its just for feedback! Cheers!

Exactly what I was thinking. Alot of review channels now are borderline useless (aside from being immensely biased from particular companies) but this review was great. Although I'd rather go the Triton in this price bracket, it's great to see every ute under 75k not being rated 2/10 simply because it's not a Ranger or Hilux..

I've tried everything to avoid buying this Cannon X. Looked at every option and honestly, sitting in a Ranger or Hi Lux feels like going back a decade in comparison. Although capable and mice to drive, they cannot come close to the tech specs, luxury and features on offer. So the bottom line was, do I buy a 4 year old Toyota or ford with 100,000 kms and a lot less tech or do I buy a brand new cannon with everything for the price. So I'm buying the Cannon and I'm going to fully " pimp" it up as well.

Im 6ft 3. I drive a MN triton and my head touches the roof. Ive looked through the top 1/3 of the front windscreen for the last 10 years and struggled to see anything out my side windows as I have to bend down to see out the side windows. I test drove pretty much everything recently getting around leading to my next purchase. Without doubt, the cannon is the roomiest up front and in the back and I can now actually see out the middle of the windscreen and side windows. Based on this and a few other factors, I will be driving my cannon in less than a fortnight.

I'm 6'4" and I second that. The Cannon is larger than the Ranger and besides the Navara, the Hilux, Bt-50, D-Max and the Triton is just made for tiny people. I just did another full day, 700km plus drive in the Cannon with no knee or back pain. The adaptive cruise and TJA (Traffic Jam Assist) makes your drive mostly stress free. When you get your Ute, drop your tyre pressure to 33 psi front and 32psi rear when driving with no load. It will eliminate most of the ride issues.

@@hernendezsanchez7646 tyre pressure will be subject to load. The factory only provides one recommended tyre pressure which is fine, when the ute is fully ladden. But if it is not, those settings are just to high. When I commute daily on my own (about 200kg load) those settings seem to be right (33-34 psi front 32-33 psi rear). The factory calls for 34 front and 34 rear minimum. Which is fine, when you have 2 mates in the car and some 4-500 kg load in the back. You will just have to see it for yourself I suppose...

I did have some rear end shudder on take-off under load. gwm dragged their feet a bit but ended up changing my rear end suspension for me for free. Its a rare issue they reckon, so far so good. There's a few things with the car that I find a bit annoying, like most cars, but the 360 camera, front and side cameras are great for shopping centre and street parking. This has made it awesome for reversing etc as I've got a crook back and neck and I don't have to strain myself as much to see out the windows. But overall, the comfort, driving position and head clearance was what sold it for me. Go for a coule of test drives and see if it suits your lifestyle and most importantly, fits you too. Had a choice: New Dmax X viz Cannon X. Choose Cannon X because I owned 2 x LST Dmax previously and DMAX LIED to their customers: It says 4x4 in big letters wow....Dmax LST (top of the line) did not even has a Diff lock and if the 2 diagonal wheels support the UTE.....the Dmax is stuck so...thus, NO 4x4! The Cannon is different even without Difflock or 4L....It is an All-Wheel drive and drove away under precisely the same conditions. Ute has now an ADR approved Bullbar, which is a MUCH better bullbar than the DMax. It even has a facility to mount a winch (DMax standard bull bar has not) and the list goes on......and on....and on.....!

The extra 500kg offered by the vw amarok not to mention the 580nm offered by the vw means more 'effortless' towing and therefore better fuel consumption...yes, have test driven both and the vw is much nicer and finished better...but that's to be expected in the price difference

I own a Cannon X with 30000kms. I have always been a supporter of the brand until now. I went to the dealer Autostrada in Western Australia, for a service and had them look at a minor warranty issue for a delaminating park brake button, along with recalling for the headrests to be replaced. This work was booked in over a month prior to the service date. It’s been over a year and when going to book my 30000kms service I enquired again as the the park brake and it turn out that even though the dealer told me it was warranty and would be replaced they had not even ordered the part and not submitted a warranty claim to GWM/HAVAL. Not only this they did not replace the recall item on the headrests. When I approached GWM/HAVAL HQ I was told it’s my problem and they have nothing to do with it. So basically, your on your own. Ok so you might think this is a dealer/service department issue but can you imagine if this was a larger warranty issue and this was the support you expect to receive. I was going to look at a new vehicle next year and I can be sure GWM/HAVAL are off the list. Warranty support is critical to me and this seals the deal. Thanks for no support GWM/HAVAL, if warranty is important to you seriously consider other brands, as GWM/HAVAL do not provide customer support.

For me the rear light arrangements of most Chinese utes are far superior than the Japanese and current Ford.... Australian vehicles generally does NOT MANDATE rear fog light set-up... but in my country, such mandate exist is annoying.. Japanese ute usually [LAZILY] use right reverse light housing as rear fog light..IF that single white light suddenly blown of, basically you reverse without any warning for everyone else.. Chinese Utes are designed rear fog lights from ground up.. doesn't sacrifice reverse lights.. not perfect, but if one is blown of, other one still working..

Are you aware that the 7 year unlimited and 5 year roadside assist is flawed. If a breakdown occurs , towing is limited to 50km, NOT to the nearest GWM service centre. It is also not 5 years unlimited km , it is 5 yrs or 100,000 km. Im at 30000km after 6mths so roughly 18mths roadside assist. If the car needs any sort of towing and the engine cant be started, a tilt tray is required. Nearest dealer could be 1 thousand km away, hardly the reason I bought this vehicle. I am setting up a case with fair trading as all of the dealers ,sold these vehicles under false pretences. Anyone who has one , ask your dealer for clarification. They will refer you onto GWM roadside assist who will then spill the beans on this fraud.

I don't know what are you complaining about, I got the same condition from Ford. 5 years or 100 000 kilometers, 8 years protection against rust, and as for breakdown or road assist, you got it even better, here in Europe (Bosnia and Herzegovina) we can only call for official state owned company tilt tray truck that is going to pick up a car and it's only 5 miles free of charge, after that, they apply expenses per mile even though we have to pay annually for a "road state service". So for anything over 5 miles, it's best to call private company and get the deal done, otherwise they are going to skin you alive. And fuel prices and everything else in Europe is DOUBLE THE PRICE compared to what Australia and U.S. are having.

And 5 yrs full roadside assist unlimited km ,, as was told when purchasing. Their reputation was so poor no one would give them a try , so they went all out. Plenty on the road now and haven't had a single owner that I've talked to say they've had anything other than teething problems. I'm at 65000 without incident. @@bandlfishingandcruisespl2841 Here we don't have any Chinese brands whatsoever. Some dude did tried to import few Geeley's but they were based on some old Citroen or whatever. And due to the fact that Citroen has bad rep as well, nobody bothered to even give it a try. Since then no Chinese car ever came to the country at least that I know of! Because Germany is so close, we are dumping ground for Germany's used cars. You can get a Mercedes or BMW easy, problem is not buying problem is maintaining these cars. If you go to Mercedes official dealership, just for them to plug in laptop and scan problems, which takes about 5 minutes, they charge 150 euros. And the spare parts costs an arm and a leg. Most guys just go to the junkyard and try to acquire spare parts themselves. It's much cheaper however it's labor intensive and for some things, you indeed do need specialized tools. Most spare parts is plastic fantastic. I can't fathom how can a BMW charge 300 euros for a plastic stupid pipe that connects to the radiator. It shouldn't cost more than 15 Euros, but because it's marked with BMW, they want to skin you alive. European car producers are INSANE. They are all owned by same guys and they do what they please. We need some healthy competition. Hope Chinese manufacturers decide to come into Europe big time.

Excellent, very enjoyable review, Carsguide! I don't trust the Chinese cars and their quality, and the companies connections to the CCP. I would much much rather go with established brands, like Toyota, Ford, Nissan, VW and so on regarding trucks. I know that the Hilux' interior is outdated and Toyota wants a lot of money for not-so-up-to-date Hiluxes ( the new ones ), but all that is much more to be trusted than the Chinese cars and trucks!!!

When they first come out I was a bit apprehensive about it. From what I have seen looking at numerous reviews, a 40K ute with a 7 year unlimited Klm warranty, you can't go wrong. The money you save by not buying a 70 to 80k alternative can set this vehicle up nicely. Risers, new suspension, bullbar, winch, you name it could turn this into a pretty nifty vehicle. Wondering though if when putting on after market parts, the warranty is still valid ????
