Great video man! Btw if I buy a new Razer Raion how do I make 100% sure it's the new updated version? I just don't wanna buy one that seems new but is actually the previous version

@@duskworker8469 That's not entirely true. First 4 numbers on S/N only tells you when it was made so "2052" means year 2020, week 52nd in that year. I bought mine and it starts with "2020" and no pivot, apparently "2038" is also no good :/ Seems like only pads produced in the late 2020 have pivot.
Superb music choice, articulate individual reviews, great diversity and tips. Well done! Thank you! Liked and subbed
Thank you for taking the time making this, and highlighting a lot of issues I think these controllers have had over the years. I really like the fight commander but when kof15 came out out it really highlighted all the issues that I never really noticed playing Street fighter 5 or strive that I could not be as precise as I needed to be. I understand that short hops and hyper hops are high precision moves but I was always one frame off of getting the input and I was totally inconsistent in high stress situations. I'll try the razor controller you recommend it only because of how detailed you were about the other controllers so I know you know what you're talking about.
Great video. I collect and play/test and design controllers. Seeing your breakdown and use cases of the controllers was great and well thought out for your needs. I love seeing that individuality.

Thank you for putting this video together man!
I'm not even done with the video yet but I already know you did an amazing job after watching the first few minutes. We are literally the same when it comes to these pads. I prefer the Hori FC4 but the terrible durability and the price has caused me to endure learning fightstick until a truly good pad of quality comes out that doesn't die that's also worth investing in. Well done on this video!! I look forward to your future videos.

Thankfs for uploading this review vid. You really helped sell me on the Hori Octa, I have heavy hands and my Hori Fighting commander Pro is almost dead so was looking for a replacement. Once the Hori Fighting Commander (Not Octa) is broken in, it's the best for light fingers. The triggers are also low profile and easy to activate. It's just pretty stiff when you first get it. Out of the box, the Raion is my favorite though and should fit your needs :)

The big thing in the Octa's favor is the gated analog stick. Players like Broski, DrDannyPham, and GGPOGrayson use the analog stick as their main movement option despite its limitations on OEM controllers. The Octa directly addresses alot of those issues by having short travel to the gate, and by having an octogate where each of the 8 directions in a traditional fighting game is notched. This removes uncertainty when it comes to blocking low or hitting DPs, which is quite nice for players who prefer to play on analog. That being said, yeah, the pad's quite a step down from the fighting commander last generation, and it's disappointing they stopped making ps4 FCs.
@Chachironi

Thanks for naming some players that use the analog for the octa. The analog is the best I've used and those are great players so I think that gives confidence to those looking to it for analog specifically.

Thanks, this is really helpful since most reviews dont talk much about the analogue stick! @Chachironi
Жыл бұрын
@@XercesBlues That depends on why you're encountering the issue but I think it could from the stiffer stick. I didn't have any issues with dashing short hops in kof or hyper hops. But I can't say for certain if it'll fix your issue unfortunately.

this is a great video, seriously good production quality! do you think that your opinions would be different if you used the edge of your thumb to do the inputs?
@Chachironi
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't think it would change too much but I may like the Fighting Commander Octa a bit more. The dpad being small and having the throw be so short might make sense for players that use the tip of their thumb. But the stiffness would still be a concern. I can see myself getting less unintended inputs for the Betop Thorne when doing left right inputs. But that's about it, just a bit more accuracy when needed :)
Damn if only you made this before i bought the Hori fighting Commander Octa. Same issues.
Very helpful. Thanks
After watching this video I was able to make a deduction, thank you brother !
For Dualshock down / down back issue, its because if you press harder, that's mean you are hitting the edge of down d-pad, if you press sightly on the edge of each side, you may notice it can gives you down back or down forward according to the side's edge. Test on Windows controller settings, you will figure it out I think Dualshock is more adapted to people who dont press too hard, moreover the d-pad is very soft if you compare to others, i also use the tip of my thumbs, it might help in order to prevent accidental down-back input instead of down.
@Chachironi
Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting quirk. It would make sense that I would see it on multiple DS4 pads then. By reaction I pressed harder because I didn't want it to happen but I was causing more harm then good. Thanks for the tip :)

That's a great deal. My main problem with Raion was just that I wish the face buttons were placed like a centimeter higher and were a bit bigger so it felt more normal coming from playing with the Hori Fighting Commander 4. As it is, it was too easy for me to get face button misinputs especially with how sensitive and light to press they are. The Octa style clicky face buttons would also be an improvement on that controller I think. But as the HFC4 is getting phased out, I might actually have to switch to the Raion unless something else interesting comes out in the next year or two since Hori's new Octa was a huge whiff with that atrocious d-pad.
Gotta respect us pad players we can play on literally anything. There are some people that use the switch pro controller D-pad and that thing is extremely sensitive.

One thing that sucks about the Switch pro controller dpad is that some of them have inaccurate inputs. I've bought 2 of them over the years that will once in a while give false inputs upwards for no reason
The betop Thirn looks nearly identical to the first sf4 style mad catz fightpads that came out on 360 and PS3 and since its from aliexpress I would not be surprised if it is a replica of it. That being said those Mad Catz fightpads were some of the best and I still use mine. Great detailed breakdown btw.
This was a dope video. I actually picked up the Hori PS5 fighting pad cause the D pad on my PS4 was absolutely destroyed and I knew if I got another ds4... Same shit was gonna happen so I decided to try the Hori and I've actually been liking it and man I'm able to finally pull off the half circle forward movements in Strive alot better. The only other problem I have with this controller is I'm not a fan of the way the d-pad is... But it's way better then what I was doing before and I'm actually used to it, I was having a issue of getting my quarter circles right, but the second I took a 3 day break from fighting games, boom not an issue anymore so it was probably a me thing. I think the DS4 is still better for me buuut I've gotten really used to be Hori pad and will be sticking with it for a while. Anime fighters have been pretty good for me, still struggle sometimes with the air dashes but with time my execution hopefully gets better. I'm still a scrub at fighting games that moved on from Super scrub to just scrub. Recently got to floor 10 with Chipp, doesn't mean too much but I'll take that little victory lol. great vid, I have the betop thorn... it's pretty good for a cheapie... still can't get supers on sf6 but i'm new so I suck
I've noticed the gap in the middle of the d-pad makes a huge difference. I would not use any controller without a gap like the ps4 d-pad cause I can't wavedash superfast in tekken on any other types of controller. the gap actually helps me go back to neutral. when I used the fighting commander I couldn't swipe the d-pad as fast as I can like I do on the playstation controller and I always get misinputs

thanks a lot i was tempted to replace my old fighting commander with a raion turn out im going to just buy again the same controller , fun fact for me it is the button on my hori that went dead first
about the hori d pad there is a programm on the pc in which you can customize the sensitivity for the dpad so you dont have to put much effort on doing inputs since its precise keep that in mind
Great video. I purchased the Hori Fighting Commander for PS4 exclusively for Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, and love it. Small gripes with it are the smallish L1/L2/R1/R2 buttons and lack of L3/R3 obviously due to lack of analogue sticks (somewhat rectified with that neat switch) but for using it in Dojo Mode for VF quick resetting characters isn't quick anymore due to having to manually toggling on and off again, lest your triggers maps be left rearranged. Not a deal breaker as it can withstand my punishment and I'm a big fan of the slightly larger buttons. I've personally ruined 2 DualShock 4 d-pads on VF and it's definitely Sony cheaping out with their systems over the years (having repaired numerous DS2, DS3 and DS4 pads, I've seen the degradation - those rubbers on the launch DS4s, ew!) Hopefully the new customisable DualSense Sony announced rival Microsoft's premium controller keeps us fighting fans in mind.
After watching I decided to get the Hori Fighting Commander! I managed to find one for Switch for 30 bucks since I play on PC mostly, I did find one for PS4 but I think it was going to take about 2 weeks to get here...

Hey, you mentioned on your betop review that you can change the shoulder buttons to L3 and R3. How did you do that? I could only switch the L2 and R2 with the L1 and R1 shoulder buttons.

I currently use a Dual shock 4 but I've separated the dpad buttons into individual pieces. I've played with Logitech f310 for a bit and I think ps3 betop's dpad are constructed the same. I've also had that missed input feeling months after. Awesome review! I used to play with a ps4 analog stick (yes i know im weird lol) because i despise using dpads, and for a little while I was actually using the raion by hot gluing a n64 thumbstick onto the dpad to use it like a pseudo arcade stick which was perfect until the rubber membrane started to wear down. Now im looking for a new controller and the hori octa looks super promising with its analog stick having notches and being stiffer/less loose than a typical analog stick which seems perfect for me. Also i wasnt a huge fan of the buttons on the raion, I get that it's supposed to be mimicking an arcade stick but I never really liked the mushiness/zero feedback from them, especially as a non claw user. I definitely would prefer some clicky/tactile buttons and the octa ones look great, even the placement/size of the buttons seem more suited to using it like a standard controller. So all in all I think im gonna go for the octa since most of the complaints i see are for the dpad, tho hopefully i'll have better luck with the triggers since that's another common complaint i see, btw have you ever had an issue with your octa triggers?
@Chachironi
Жыл бұрын
Hey! The Octa might actually be perfect for you. The stick on it is one of the best I've used because of it's additional stiffness and having the notches (The octa gate is where it got it's name) The triggers feel really nice and are easy to press. The only issue I ran into is due to it's sensitivity, I was getting some accidental inputs when I rest my fingers near them while I'm playing. They're pretty high buttons. But with adjustments I'm sure you can avoid any issues I was having with them.

My biggest gripe with the Razer Raion are the buttons. I hate how mushy they feel. I don't press hard on buttons so when I tap on them the inputs might not register. You might consider picking up a dpad from battle beaver for dual shock 4. It’s basically four individual buttons that replace the single piece dpad. Just got mine in today, not sure how I feel about it yet. It’s definitely more precise but I think that precision might take some getting used to.

I actually own some from when they first released it! It's the blue ones. I found that it actually becomes too precise and diagonal inputs become inconsistent. The single piece dpad gives some leeway since it's all one connected piece while the individual buttons require you to press both buttons to get that input. I'd get issues in Street Fighter where I'd miss DP's because my thumb didn't quite hit the down and right buttons. It does feel does feel great though. It replicates the feel of mechanical switches on the PS4 pad. I first got them when Sonicfox got a modded controller from Battle Beaver and was talking about the dpad years ago. Not sure if he's still using it these days.

I always thought the Razer Raion was the worst of them all. I started with the PS4 Fighting Commander, was my absolute favorite, sadly only lasted a year. Alternatives were the Switch version of the commander, but yea, would need a converter for tournaments. After that, I bought the Fighting Commander OCTA and the issue I had were mostly the D-Pad and the right bumper breaking off very easily, bought a second one and it had the same issues, I kid you not. Then I had the PowerA Fusion Pad, which I thought, was the best one, the build quality, the weight and everything... this was nearly top notch. But the common issue was the dpad again, having durability issues. Now inbetween the OCTA and PowerA, I bought a Raion, but immediately put it away, because I couldn't work with the dpad. And after 6 broken controllers, I switched to the Raion and I play with it today, even being competitive with it. It kinda needs a bit of practice to get comfy with it and it really pays out. Also seems that I have the later model and I never realised they added a pivot to it. So yea, I personally recommend the Raion for long-term/competitive use.

The only thing I was infuriated was the lack of incompability with the Software for so long, but the recent update few days ago, made it possible to use the victrix pro bfg. Because without it, you couldn't change your button layout. The original layout with the pightpad module still had double inputs for R1 and R2 and there wasn't a switch to replace the R1/R2 shoulder buttons with L3/R3. Currently I use it for games outside of fighting games, since my raion is still working well. But yea, if it breaks, I still got a substitute ;)

@Chacironi brooks wingman FGC let’s you use just about any controller with PS5
5:09 this is the biggest issue with the analogue stick on this controller. It misses diagonals all the time. The Victrix BFG pro is a really nice stick especially when you replace the gate around it, but the travel distance of the stick to the edges is too long. The hori octa pad is perfect apart from the diagonals on the stick, so if a controller could combine the responsiveness of the victrix stick with the travel distance of the hori octa stick and make the rest of the controller like the octa, then that would be perfect.
ive used a few controllers with that cross cap alternative thats featured in the Betop (I actually own a betop and I now have to see if the box came with that cap). But the other controllers that look more like a standard ps2, I prefer that feel over the traditional plus cap. i dunno the ergonomics of that cap lets my brain know exactly where my thumb is and for some reason the plus design one , i over shoot or under shoot the movement. Id say try that cap out with the half circles. but then again, the fact you use the meat part of your thumb might yield way different results than me as i use my thumb pad and thrum tip.
what i did to get short hops on dbfz is make every direction harder to push on the dpad but let up be easy to push. So when i brush it i can do small hops
Sorry if you keep getting bugged about this video (thank you btw, I love how detailed you were about it) but it seems like after a few months the Razer Raion seems to deteriorate quickly? Such as double taps or ghost inputs. Also I can't find conclusive information about it, but some people say the Fighting commander OCTA has software updates that address diagonals now? How do you feel about both of these after 7 months? Do you still use either?

The Razer Raion deteriorating quickly isn't surprising since a lot of Razer's products have bad build quality. The double taps/inputs most likely come from the yellow mechanical switches they use since this is an issue on their keyboards as well

No problem at all, thanks for watching! Sorry for the late reply. Raion is still my main controller and I've played a lot on it since the video. No issues just yet! I don't press my buttons too hard so maybe that's helped mine stay alive. I've heard the same issues you mentioned so it's likely just a matter of time till I get issues. I ended up selling the OCTA unfortunately. Wish I could offer more insight there.
The madkatz street fighter, and wrestling controllers for ps3 and Xbox 360 are the best fighting I’m buying one of those with a converter.
i wanted to buy the octa and i almost lost 50 bucks, you saved me thanks. i guess i'll stick with a ps4 controller since the raion is 150+ bucks, maybe if i decide to get seriously into fighting game i will buy it
My Hori FC4 is on its last legs and I also didn't want to pay double to replace it. The Raion looks good, but I have a bad history with Razer products breaking.

It's lasted about a year before I developed this issue kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYyGqcNvdaS1ebw.html It's a great controller but I'm actually going back to my FC4 until it breaks. An alternative is to buy the switch version and get a converter for it. I may do that once my FC4 dies
I think it depends on hand size. My hand is medium size. I have the older batch of raion which don't have pivot in it. Even when I mod it to have a pivot, I still don't really like raion because it was too big, dpad is too wide it was harder to input motion, also I had a hard time pressing all the 6 face buttons efficiently. Lastly, it has some input lag despite the wired connection. It might be an issue of older batch, idk. I bought hori fighting commander octa for ps5/ps4 and it fits perfectly in my hand. I am able to press all the 6 buttons efficiently. I know understand why ppl like 6 face buttons on their fightpad. The dpad is at perfect size and it's not hard at all. I think it's just at the same hardness as 8bitdo pro 2 or just a bit softer. It also clearly more responsive and has higher polling rate than my razer raion. I tested the input lag with Xinput Test program from github. Octa is definitely the fightpad I searched for a long time. Hope that it won't break quickly as some user report. Just want to give more perspective. Thanks so much for the comparison!

Glad you're enjoying the octa! Input delay would've been a good thing I could've checked in the video. Thanks for the input

Great video mate, what would say is the best pad for SF V and what for MK 11 as they the games I play, thanks
How would you rate the MadCatz Fightpad for SF4 and WWE brawl starz? The brawl pad compared to these especially the fighting commander 4 and betop
Did you by any chance try the switch Hori Fighting Commander? I only have a PC and Switch and I'm wondering if theres much of a difference compared to the PS4 version
2:50 its def the way you use your thumb. I get issues with that as well but i used the tip of my thumb(i bend it at the knuckle to play. Every ps4 pad has some sort of like zone where d to df inputs kinda are overlapped. i more so saying sometimes a controller will only register down for a very precise section of the dpad. like a little sliver
About the DS4 you must open it and paint a little bit with a pencil the pressure points on the Foil. And Viola! The DS4 is more sensitive.
Great video, though I wonder how these controllers fare with each other when doing charge motions...

All controllers perform well with charge characters. The Betop Thorne feels a tad awkward due to looseness but still usable! If I had to pick the best however for charge, I'd say Fighting Commander 4
Good news! 8bitdo will launch the NEO GEO Fightpad next month! You can already buy it in presale!

Hey, thx for the news, man. I usually am well aware about fightpad news, but looks like i missed this one this time, so... again, thanks, going to google it now xd.
the replacement dpad for betop is good for driving games or plane games requires alot of movement which helps
I'm having the same issue with the dpad diagonals my fighting commander octa but worse. I play street fighter 6 and drop simple quarter circle motions since only d, f is registered instead of d, df, f.
Dude we are on the same boat, playing with pad is a struggle
what do you think about the size? I love the XBOX series X d-pad so im looking for something similar, wolverine razer controller is way too big, what about the size of this Raion?
@Chachironi
Жыл бұрын
The size of the Dpad is identical but if you use the tip of your thumb to hit the edges of the pad, then you might want to add another 1-2mm since there's a bit of travel distance. If you use the base of the thumb like I do, then you should be fine.
If I have issues with the Fighting commander 4 where i'm trying to hold back but if I ever so slightly have my thumb on the bottom part of the left dpad I crouch block instead and eat an overhead when i reacted to it. If I have issues with that would the fighting commander octa be a good fit you think? maybe i just have a heavy hand
i had no idea the razer raion now has a pivot. im super disappointed because i enjoy playing on it and the one i have doesn't have one. I don't really wanna go out to find one but I'll definitely consider it if I go back to pad.
Great video you definitely should try the newer Xbox series controller it’s smaller than the base Xbox one controller and the dpad is different

That's interesting I didn't know it was smaller too. Thanks for the heads up.
