This car has great potential however my Mom had one and within 2 weeks it suffered a complete electrical failure which rendered the car un-drive-able. The dealership had the car for a month until they identified the issue and she’s just getting it back this week. VW dropped the ball on this launch, they didn’t send out any equipment to the dealerships for any type of vehicle maintenance so most of the time they’ve had it is waiting for tools and parts.

I do not care if it hits 60 in 4 seconds. I would be fine with 6-8, but it has to have 300-350 miles of range standard for 25k before I would get one. Any electric car needs to meet that for mass market adoption, the average person can not afford multiple cars for long trips.

I'm cross shopping the two, I'm looking for primarily a work vehicle, that's good for remote camp sites, and good for road trips. ID.4 has some general advantages in areas you wouldn't think to look for in an electric car: It has more ground clearance out of the box (also, some companies already make 2" lift kits for it) it's trunk has a more durable fabric liner and optional rugged mats for carrying the type of gear that would normally scratch up the plastics, and it has a significantly higher tow rating than Ioniq 5, and comes with trailer light wiring and a tow hitch out of the box. I think ID.4 is better at the utility stuff you'd be looking for in an SUV or crossover. Whereas the Ioniq 5 has things that make it a better electric car - faster charging, slightly better performance, an impressive trunk and a small frunk space, but the lack of tow hitch, trailer lights, and low ground clearance cause issues when looked at as a utility vehicle.

Esp after driving a Model 3, the VW has a fun personality that the Tesla definitely does not imo. My only regret is not getting the AWD version because with EV torque, the tires get eaten up on non AWD models. Otherwise after 2 months with the ID4 Pro S, I really love it.

Great review! Keep ‘me coming! The lack of a frunk is just stupid and a wasted opportunity. EVs are still at a disadvantage when it comes to road trips, because of the recharging time, so they need every single possible advantage they can get over ICE vehicles. Ford gets this - the frunk in the Mach-E is substantial, and the frunk in the F-150 Lightning is massive. I guess this vehicle might appeal to current VW owners who just want a vehicle that’s as ‘normal’ as possible but has the core advantages of an EV: convenience, climate impact, reliability, lower total cost of ownership, less maintenance, quietness, smoothness, etc. Which is fine, but this is a missed opportunity to excite people about EVs.

I think the only problem now is the infrastructure. There are people doing long journeys, like cross country trips in EVs and they say it doesn’t take longer than gas, the only problem is that some places they wanted to visit don’t have charging stations. Most EVs today will get you charged up within 20-30 minutes and thats usually how long you’d stop even in a gas car. Not good for people who pee in a bottle while driving but for most family roads trips stopping every 2-3 hours is not bad.

The second engine for AWD will fill the entire Space in the front. No big Deal in US, but as World Car each cm makes a huge difference. If you find a parking lot in Europe you now what I am talking about Even Mr. Musk recognized in Berlin that US Cars are way too large for Europe. And the Argument that a frunk helps for the charging cabels, I can not follow, too. At home I use my Wallbox with a cable and on the Autobahn I use HPCs and they have all cables, too. There is a BIG difference between drag coefficient and drag. Frontal area X drag coefficient is what you compare to deduce drag characteristics... if my memory serves. (to lazy to look it up). Thus a short car with a worse drag coefficient can and likely will have lower drag. Intuitively makes sense, right?

I couldn't agree more. VW had an obvious win with their EV architecture but failed at the simple stuff they normally do so well; like the HVAC, window, and media controls. These are normally mindless interactions drivers have with a car but now made more difficult. Just because the EV powertrain is new, it doesn't mean we have to rethink every interaction with the car. Reminds me of the dumb door handle/buttons on the mach E. Also, I think the exterior of both the id3 and id4 are frumpy and boring.

it couldn't "easily" be avoided. they go for lower costs and hope the market accepts it. when all the manufacturers do the same, they give customer no choice. all that money they saved will be invested elsewhere, probably into these new technologies because they're all a bit late to the party compared to tesla which is miles ahead and could be dominant in future..

@@MyRealName While I understand your point, it kinda makes it seems like a manufacturer's talent level is never a factor. In this case, yes, VW would have had to invest a lot more money in software, in order to finish the product on time and before factory runs began. Why? Because the USA and Asia are better at software.

Asia’s competitiveness is drawn from reputation today, and the USA simply has a lot more freedom in terms of handling of data that the EU strictly guards against. This is why there’s a good number of American apps and websites that aren’t permitted in the EU.

Why don't they have a flat section on the dash that you can attach custom buttons via strong magnets, that communicate to the car via NFC or Bluetooth? That way you can have your do-it-all screen, and if you prefer to have buttons/knobs, you can add as you desire? Except of basic HVAC and volume, that comes standard.

just got mine a few weeks ago. . there is for sure a lot to improve, ...like in a Tesla. but... in daily use, it's a great car. drives very smooth, charging is fast and will improve even this summer. I think the Mach-E disqualified itself by the very slow charging rate at higher charging levels of the battery. therefor it needs more planning for a road trip. it's a typical Volkswagen: nothing is very much standing-out, fashion won't be its highlight, Tech won't be the newest and it's not the fastest.....but: The car is driving the way it should, building quality is great and if you need assistance , there is a place to go to. It's a car that is placed high in the mid range. not perfect, but definitely not bad. 7-8 out of 10. I drive it with a smile every day. it just works, special on the long distance where I use it mainly for. nice review !
