2021 Santa Cruz Nomad V5 | First Look

Спорт

As claimed on their website, the Santa Cruz Nomad has a reputation built on consistently pushing the envelope on how lawless a single-crown bike can get. Obviously as riders have grown more discerning and used to finding bikes that offer impressive performance both uphill and down, bikes have had to progress. The days of pushing bikes up hills just for the descent seem to be fading, except for those true die-hard downhillers…We remember those days and miss them dearly but let us get back to the point. Hiking a 45lb DH bike up a hill is about as fun as pedaling a 38lb sloth up a hill. Thankfully, bikes have evolved quite a deal and the new Santa Cruz Nomad V5 is a distant vision from what it once was, yet the vision remains. Sporting 170mm of front and rear wheel travel, Santa Cruz’s lower link shock configuration and 27.5 wheels front and rear, the goal was to create a play bike that descends like a V10 but can still be pedaled on all-day missions. A bold claim for sure! Let us see how it’s stacking up after some preliminary testing over the last month.
WHAT’S NEW
Santa Cruz bike fans will instantly notice the new Nomad V5 is sporting some refined lines and the lower-link VPP design. The new lower-link design has greatly improved the compliance and square-edge hit performance that plagued earlier VPP bikes and has some of our more vocal anti-VPP testers eating crow after years of criticism. The new Santa Cruz Nomad frame was redesigned around this 170mm lower-link system, comes in C or CC level carbon and has a lifetime warranty. It is available in sizes small through XL and has size specific chainstay lengths, an increasingly popular trend that we are not mad at.
Be sure to check out our complete write up, see the whole line and our interview with Santa Cruz employee, Seb Kemp at theloamwolf.com

    I like this format of asking guys with the previous generation for their input. Please do this with future bikes. This bike ticks a lot of boxes and gotta say looks sick in both color options.

    the round table part with owners of previous models of the bike is SOO GOOD! specially because these are people that don't necessarily change their bikes all the time, they are closer to being an average rider than most of the reviewers (no offence) which belive it or not it brings a more approachable opinion for viewers to get a sense of the new bike because someone who currently uses the previous version tells you hey this is better than the one i own because of X Z & Y reasons you can probably trust it to be much more honest and or reasonable!! you guys should do it more often!!!

    @@TheLoamWolf Right on, I have the Cascade Link in the Bronson and fork out to 170 so essentially a 170/160 Bronson...but I'm sure Cascade Components will come out with a new link for this nomad so the potential for a 180/180ish 27.5 enduro bike is there for sure!

  • @eugenux

    @eugenux

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@adamsiler4766 that's the only way, bar a mx wheel size, that would make sense on this bike. At 170-170, it is neither enduro, nor freeride..a jack of all trades and master of none. When the V4 was launched, it had around 10-20 mm more than the vast majority of enduro bikes of that time. Yes, it had 27.5" wheels but it had 170mm when most of the enduros were 150-160mm bikes. Now though, most of the fast 29ers have 160-170 or 170-170mm travel, point at which the Nomad has just its legacy name going for it, which is pretty bad(and sad). Edit. Of course it will be a great bike to ride...for a 27.5". The new Altitude, both the Megas(the Nuke one and the SC one), the new Slash, not to mention the 1 year "old" enduro or the RAAW Madonna, Kona Process X, Privateer 161 and others...many-many others will blast it out on and off the trail...and that's ok, the Nomad isn't for that type of riding. It would have been so much cooler if they would have launch it as a 180-180mm travel bike, to compete with the likes of Yeti SB165, Norco Shore and the future Nuke Giga 27.5 and probably other bikes soon to be launched in the same category...but yeeah...SC...they think they invented the mtb-ing and that they know better.

    I'd just get the sb165 instead, 0.2 degree slacker, 76 seat tube, slightly longer reach per size, very similar leverage rates, but standard with a 180mm fork up front instead of 170mm whilst keeping the same geo. On paper both bikes are nearly identical geometry and suspension eise but the fact the sb165 takes a bigger fork means you either have more travel st the front or in the case of mulleting it like the guy in this video did, again you can still run something like a 170mm fork and 29 wheel unlike the 160mm fork and 29 wheel like the Nomad. The sb165 was there first and is the better bike imo. Go look on 99spokes and compare them, the nomad v5 is almost like a blatent rip off of the sb165, the silouhettes are practically identical from a geo standpoint and now SC has brought their leverage rates more in line with Yeti for more midstroke support and a bit less progressivity.
