2021 MG ZS EV Review

Фильм және анимация

Today James is driving the new MG ZS EV, the second variant of the all electric ZS. This one, for a change is bottom of the range but houses the larger battery size, almost 73kWh's. With that, this should have great range and all at a decent price. Follow us to find out how we get on.

Thanks for showing us the bottom of the range. It's always so disappointing to be introduced to a lovely looking car and then realise you'd lose all things desirable in the price range which you can afford. Much better to see and be content with the basic model and then work out what extras you may or may not be able to have. Hopefully we'll be able to benefit from Florence's opinion soon. 🤗😊

Excellent review, long enough to explain the difference between the old version and this new one! Great to see cloth seats much warmer in winter, my only criticism is the headline of the video, nearly skipped it because it says 2021 MG, I would of thought 2022 would be more appropriate and more relevant, attracting more views in the process.

Great overview! As you know James I have the Zoe now and was excited for the e-Up, drove it and was totally unimpressed. Drove this just to tick it off the list, loved it and ordered it as LR in SE. Super excited for it; you'll get to see it as always on its first birthday 😊

Great short review. If you could do follow up reviews testing the real world range at these lower winter temperatures that would be fantastic and perhaps one on the Trophy Connect so you can show the differences. Totally agree opening Pano roof is amazing and rare at this proce point

I was impressed by the first version - this is even better (although the incandescent rear indicator is strange). Although I went for a Model 3 in the end, I think the MG delivers what most people would want from an affordable EV.

Good to see what the lower spec actually offers, as I think most of us potential buyers would like to aspire to the higher spec vehicles we see on review, but then find out they are significantly more expensive than the white SE model price that is being quoted by the reviewer.

Hi James, Dave here in France. I bought my ZS EV in sept 2021 and was the last of the previous version. It appears to have the revised firmer suspension as it corners like a good'un. Indication range after a full overnight charge was showing about 265 kms during the coldest of winter and is now showing about 310 kms. (All range numbers based on ECO setting and HVAC off). As at today she has done 6700 kms. Mine is the luxury spec so has all the bells and whistles, drives really well and seems like fantastic value at 18,000 euros (approx £15,000) plus an old diesel van as trade-in. Both my wife and I love the car ...

Useful to hear your comments and having driven the ZS LR Trophy Connect in the first week it came out I wasn't sure I could justify the ticket price to upgrade from my great First Gen ZS Exclusive so it was great to have a ZS SE LR with only 150 miles on the clock for the whole day last week as loan car during my ZS's 2 annual service. I'd agree the suspension up date and power mapping is really appreciated as is the significant improvements to the sound insulation. The car is overall a more refined car and that is even comparing the Exclusive to the new SE trim. However, I would not buy the SE as a keeper as I found the cloth seats have less supportive lumber than the Old Exclusive seats even though I'd rather have cloth over PU Leather (ie plastic) seats. I am sure (although my dealer dis agrees) that the Trophy seats have been improved from the older Exclusive seats and the did feel comfortable and supportive in the 30 minutes I drove the Trophy. But the Elephant in the room is price for the LR Trophy. The government grant (in the UK) was recently axed shortly before the UK pricing was announced for the ne SR models and there was therefore little room for manoeuvre for MG to adjust the already announced LR line-up. This means that only the ZS SE LR qualifies for the now reduced grant effectively increasing the customer price £2,500 on the Trophy and Trophy Connect! It would be great to hear your views on the whole range because if the Trophy SR in White gets the grant that would be a winner for the overall improvements (excluding the range) because an extra 30 to 40 miles from the 51 kWh SR would still give comfortable 2 hours on the motorway and quite enough for most people's daily driver.

In Australia and New Zealand we will only be getting the smaller 51 kWh model. The smaller battery is LFP like my Tesla Model 3 SR+ 2021. Don't overlook the advantages of LFP batteries including that they should be charged weekly to 100% and are not damaged if discharged to 0%. LFP batteries don't catch fire and are good for up to 3000 cycles. My dealer says that they are worried about the larger lithium nickel cobalt battery in Australian conditions as it might not cope as well with the high temperatures in Australia. Here in NZ we get whatever Australia gets despite being much cooler. I've ordered the 51kWh battery model and I think it is still a great buy.

I wouldn’t be in the market for a new one given how much this costs ( I would certainly love the long range version ) but for me and viewers to know how much is upgraded and how significant it is over the last model would be nice to know. One feature I couldn't live without that the new MG doesn't have and would have been a sale for me is Coast Mode, something my classic Ioniq has. All the rest is perfect and once they arrive in Australia later this year suspect the bigger battery car which I think are net capacity not gross from other reviews I've seen will sell very well especially with only that small difference in price for more capacity and range.

Great review, thanks James. Odd they didn’t put a Frunk in it. So easy, seeing the aftermarket ones for the Kona/Niro/Soul. Pop off the motor cover, pop in a large plastic tray. Also - you mentioned 75kg load on the roof bars - did that version have bars ? Couldn’t see any using the phone screen. The capacity of the bars was an issue on MG5. They all seem to have an approved load rating now (when bars fitted).

Looks good. Refreshing to see the entry level model being reviewed. Just a few issues: 1. Why the continued use of non LED lights? I've been using LED lights on my bike since the mid 90's. Amazing to think the car industry is several decades behind the cycle industry. Could there be a warehouse full of non LED lights that they are desperately trying to get rid of before the reality of a stranded asset takes hold. Making a marketing issue of LED lights is a bit like using the phrases; colour tv or ten new pence. 2. The off-centre charge flap just looks wrong. Needs to be in the centre or at the rear, out of sight.

I'm loving this longer range ZS EV. I love the E-Niro but that's so much more money than this car. I've seen this at MG dealers at 28.5k, so maybe there's a deal to be had as well? Maybe take a nurse with you to the dealer as well!? But seriously though, the E-Niro at 2 yrs old can be had for around 29k as well, so the choice is a tricky one! Not for me though - the ZS has just become available on my company car scheme!

Looked at these, you have to get trophy spec to get the roof. You then get the pretend leather like it or not but the price is above grant so costs a lot more. You still get radar cruise on the SE, all the main toys just nor roof, no pretend leather and no wireless charging, no heated seats and mirrors think that's it For me the £29k for se spec is much better than I think £34 for the trophy due to the lack of grant money. no flying machine but faster than anything similar in petrol or diesel and has ev benefits ...I will stick on a battery interior light for the back with Velcro, terrible oversight for what is worth about £1. Oh and it's bigger than it looks too and the boot is decent. Can't really in beat it all in all

Whatever car I am buying, I will get the lowest spec and longest range model, the problem is there is never a low enough spec for me. I have a perfectly fine GPS in my phone, I don't need another one in the car. I do not need a reversing camera, the car got mirrors. I can handcrank the windows when I need a crack of air, I open the windows fully mabe once a year. Glass roofs are just plain stupid if you live in a cold climate, you will need a hat for the cold, and half of the year it is covered in snow anyway Smaller rims/higher profile tyres gives you better comfort and cheaper tyres. LED headlights are efficient and gives good light, but freezes up in the winter giving you wors light then halogen. 1972 I had automatic heated seats and headlight vipers on my SAAB96 as standard, that should be standard by now.

what would happen if someone rear ended your petrol car, damaging the fuel tank, or rammed your front end, puncturing the radiator and making it undriveable? It would be repaired. And so would an EV if it sustained damage in the area of the charge port, I imagine..... Consider used EV's David. They have less silly price tags...... I've seen Renault Zoe's and Leafs at around £6k.... Plenty of used EV's around now, and these days there are even dealers whom sell only used EV's New EV's do cost more to buy, but the actual "fuel" and maintenance costs are much reduced over ICE cars..... I used to fork out around £140 to £160 per month - or sometimes more - on petrol. Now it's less than £40 per month for electricity for my EV....... I reckon I've saved well over £2500 in petrol costs over the past 2 years alone.....

but don't forget Richard, that as electricity prices rise, then so will the cost of refining oil, so your petrol and diesel will cost more too..... And the increasing number of emissions charging schemes in our towns and cities will also add to the cost of driving an ICE car in the future. Oxford's charging scheme kicks off next month, and will charge *all* ICE cars to enter the city centre. You could always consider a used EV. They are out there now.... Why don't you make an episode about Cleveleys stopping battery swaps on Nissan Leafs and the reasons why ? It would seem that the Nissan leaf is a disposable item again, just like any other car. Not very environmental is it ?

To be honest, theres a new way of swapping the batteries without the use of a CAN bridge, and also, the batteries are being bought up so quickly for second uses we can't get them. It's actually very environmentally friendly.
