MG ZS EV - Now better....or is it?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

One of our very first (and successful) road test videos was of the then new MG ZS EV, a no-nonsense, no-frills family crossover that offered decent value in a package that was just about right for the budget conscious family that wanted to go electric. Of course, a lot can happen in two years, and new electric cars have been coming along thick and fast, many of which have real talent. Yet, MG haven't stood still. As Europe's fastest-growing car brand, they are keen to capitalise on that early success of the ZS EV, and so now, we have a substantially revised one. Bigger battery, longer range and redesigned looks. But is it enough, and does it still play the value-for-money acrd like no other? Time for Bryan to revisit it and subject it to the revised, more comprehensive AutoEV road test and find out.

Very fair review. All I can say is having tried all the competitors, I ordered the MG. Quieter and more comfortable than the Kona for me, way cheaper for the same spec on the eNiro, Skoda, VWID4. I felt the MG was no worse than any of these Good solid, comfortable transport and no worse for that. It is even cheaper than a Zoe once you’ve spec’d it up as well. If I need excitement, I have motorcycles for that. We all know the truth is you can hardly exploit performance on todays roads. And I must be odd in todays world because I don’t pay monthly, it’s way cheaper in the end but it means I have to save up rather than have it now. We pay our money and make our choices.

It isn't simply down to performance though Brian. From the reviews of the updated cars I've read, it still lacks the refinement/development of the established competition. But of course not everyone places such things so highly on their list of priorities......

@@Brian-om2hh a very valid point. In my opinion, the refinement of the MG was better than the Kona, the Peugeot E208, the Zoe and the ID3, not quite as good as the eNiro or the Tesla M3, but only by small margins, they are all more refined than my Volvo V70. Only the Tesla was noticeably quicker, it was the M3 long range I tried. It was undoubtedly the best vehicle, but it wasn’t £20,000 better, neither is the standard M3 £12,000 better. My opinion obviously and ultimately my choice, it’ll be interesting to see how it pans out.

In Australia, the MG ZS EV was the cheapest vehicle by quite a margin, even much cheaper than the Nissan Leaf. The MG ZS EVs are all pretty much sold out (it is rumoured a fleet purchased 600, virtually all the stock in Australia) and the new models will not arrive for about six months and are expected to cost more. I purchased an MG ZS EV and am very glad I did. As far as the new model goes, there are improvements but there is little that would justify me spending extra. I use my car as a city car and the 263 km range is not an issue. The original MG ZS EV gave a lot of Australians the opportunity to buy a lower-cost electric vehicle which is well made and does everything needed of a city car.

I’m looking to move on from my Outlander PHEV and have tested a few EVs recently. Honestly the MG ZS blew me away. I’ve read and watched numerous reviews while doing research and I wasn’t expecting to like too much but it quickly jumped to the top of my list. It is far more refined than my Outlander (not hard) and nowhere near as dull to drive! My local MG dealer appears to be offering a dealer contribution equivalent to the plug in grant on the trophy models so it makes it a very tempting proposition. It’s decision time.

I have ordered this, and yes, I did look at the other cars like the enyaq, ki6, ionic and many more that starts where this one ends topped specked. I mean, the enyaq has a nice entry price, but it is stripped down on batteries and silly things like rear camera, smart cruise control, and the second you start adding some of those features, you sky rockets away from the top specked MG. So I don’t think it’s fair to say that you are nearing the other models, because then you a running into their sales pitch. The Enyaq ends on £50000-55000 When you have added the stuff you want. My norwegian MG ended on around £32436(we dont have tax on EVs) when I put everything on it, even the towing hook, so that would be around £ 37000 in UK I would guess. £13000-17000 cheaper then the Enyaq. But yeah, I did miss to be able to drag the stearing towards me, and the stearing wheel feels a little cheap…but that’s it, and not worth for my part to upgrade to a kia or skoda.

Thank you! someone who has actually done some research and appears to be more than what the video provides I'm afraid. You're totally correct, I've done the same research, compared MG against other brands when purchasing or when leasing and MG is a massively attractive proposition. Sorry to say to the OP but there's an air of snobbery or feel like there's some type of agenda being displayed. Every time he gets enthusiastic on something the car does well you see him pull back in his opinion like he doesn't want to give too much credit. As others have said in the comments, like Kia/Skoda were a few years back, MG seem to be in a similar space now and I think could be an exciting brand as years go on.

What may also be of interest to you, as a potential EV buyer, is the fact that a huge deal to increase the size of the UK's public charging infrastructure, from 26'000 connections to 190'000 by 2030 has recently been agreed. And all are to have contactless payment facilities... Don't overlook the used EV market either Ray. There are some nice used examples out there already. Plus there are now dealers around whom specialise in electric vehicles only. Drive-Green and Go Green Autos are but 2 examples. There may be some more seemingly promising new Chinese EV's on their way to the market, but again it's likely they'll lack some of the driving and development finesse of the more established brands...

Oh, interesting question! We love the Citroen eC4 (we’ve tested it on the channel if you haven’t watched that review) and it’s a supremely comfortable car. I’d say if you can live without the additional space the MG offers, and you don’t need the extra range, then I’d be tempted with the Citroen. The key with the ZS is to keep the spec level down or go for the standard range battery to maximise the value-for-money package it offers. It’s a very good car, but the eC4 is a hidden gem in our book. If you haven’t driven one, you should. That being said, the MG is a great, no-nonsense family car. Same issue here in the Netherlands. The price of the top spec ZS EV has increased substantially, putting it too close to the Kona, ID.3, e-Niro and the like, and these are accomplished EVs from reputable manufacturers. The lower trim models of the ZS EV have the best value proposition, the top spec one not so much anymore.

The difference here though is that the MG ZS EV is at its top trim level (with all the toys at sub £35,000) whereas those vehicles you mention have only basic trims with almost everything stripped off them, before you have to add them in or jump up trim levels and price increases to near £40,000 before you get anywhere near the ZS spec. I feel I am going to be repeating myself a lot here, but then that is my fault for not being clearer in the video. As I said to the myriad of others who have said the same, I understand the spec is different, and I completely get that you would have to spend closer to £40k to have the same spec on the Skoda. HOWEVER, the Enyaq drives better, is bigger, and you only lose about 20 miles of range on the WLTP, so my point is, those are sacrifices that "I" would be willing to make to have the Skoda. Please don't get me wrong, the MG is still a great car for the money, but our advice is to maximise that value-for-money proposition, then you are better having the SE (still well equipped) or waiting until the standard battery car arrives to take advantage of the PiCG. Some dealers may be starting to show reluctance to take them in part exchange by then. I had a quote for a basic enyaq with a few features that I would consider essential on an ev and it was way dearer than a tesla m3. The enyaq is vastly overpriced, never mind compared to this. ZS Trophy has far more features, for much less money. Anyone parting with their money for an enyaq has more money than sense. Go for this or a Tesla, and pocket the savings.

I found the ID3, ID4 and the Enyaq kit levels pretty disappointing, especially having to pay (a lot) extra for the same safety kit that will come as standard in my Trophy. Then there are reasonable question marks over VW recent cheating on emissions (allegedly) and that after being caught with their “diesel gate”. I felt they were doing what they’ve always done, listing a notional ‘sackcloth and ashes’ version to get the headline low price, but you try and buy one in that spec, it’s darn near impossible, my dealer suggesting that I should add packages to improve delivery times, as they “don’t make them in the basic specification unless it’s a special order which would take months”. By the time I had specced an Enyaq (which honestly is one of the most ridiculous cars to spec) I was looking at an extra £200+ per month over the Trophy I've ordered. I appreciate the Enyaq is purpose-designed as an EV and has a bigger boot and looks nicer but that price difference over a 4 or 5 year lease is mental. As a side note, I think it was actually cheaper to spec a Tesla Model 3 over the Enyaq. I do not think you can compare the MG to an Enyaq. The equipment differences are astronomical for the base price. Also, when you kept saying certain features were 'OK' what were you comparing the car to price and spec wise? The MG was a delightful test drive. I'm coming from a top-spec i3 which is a hoot to drive but the MG in terms of price and kit trumps it in every way.

It'll be interesting to see if any manufacturers do anything to try and get a model under the new £32k grant limit. MG has already got that, although I'd really want the additional bits of kit the Trophy comes with. Actually, what I'd really want is a supermini sized vehicle that still has >200 mile range and is a realistic price which no one seems to do, yet. When a new model comes, no one talks about what has been done to make it more reliable. It's a kind of review for rich buyers. Concerns about comfort, the speed that has no use, ETC. Steering adjustment has been pointed as a major flaw here but I do not think there is any fixed driving comfort. It's like office sitting, you need to move a bit every now and then to remain comfortable but again, concern for rich buyers. Compared with eNiro and put behind it. eNiro and most KIA have a very ugly design. What about that? The design has no price? The new MG is a very classy-looking small SUV. Anyways, I hope a good reviewer like him and others will try to find information about reliability also. Most cars don't have in/out adjustment of the steering wheel or tilt adjustment of the seats - especially at this price point. I've owned Merc's, Audi's etc. But having just bought an ZS EV LR, I find it to be a really good car for the money. I'm getting 200 miles plus, per charge and expect this to improve as the weather gets better. It's not perfect, but what car is? For most people, it is an affordable, comfortable and roomy car to meet every day needs at a reasonable price. Something that isn't mentioned very often is that it is sooooo quiet! I will also add that many cars at this level (and many cheaper cars) have reach/rake adjustment of the steering column. My point is, if you wanted bang for your buck, then the Skoda is the better option once you get to £34,000. I completely agree with your point, and I do mention in the 'competitors' section that the Peugeot e2008, Vauxhall Mokka e (and though I don't mention it, the Hyundai Kona) are more natural rivals when it comes to size. Your point about the Fiesta and Focus is a goos one, however, both are great driving cars, so you'd pick the one that suits you. But here we have a car that doesn't drive as well as a car from the class above that is much bigger as a family car and offers a better value for money proposition. I think a lot of people have misunderstood what I am saying about the new ZS. I like it, I really do. I think it is a great car. But the USP of it was always value, and with the price increase and removal of the plug-in car grant for the Trophy and Trophy Connect trims, its harder to justify when compared with cars at a similar price. @@SamuelHauptmannvanDam whilst we accept there are forms of autonomy in these newer cars, we have no more than a passing curiosity in anything more. Perhaps @fullycharged are your guys for that?

@@SamuelHauptmannvanDam We want to focus on reviewing cars that we can drive. Whilst I have no doubt that the autonomous car is close, for us, that isn't driving. And as we are are a channel that puts driving, and therefore the joy of that experience, self-driving cars won't feature. We will leave that to technology channels.

Wow, what a biased load of rubbish. Kia lover tries to make out that the new ZS is disappointing... After taking Kia Renault VW and Vauxhalls to name some of my 6 month search for an EV for the family I have put an order in for a new trophy in red. Can't believe he missed out on the LED notifications in the mirror or the traffic assist modes, the infotainment is as nippy as any other. Range is better than anything at the price. If this reviewer thinks this is a basic car or not as good as any other ...... Go and try one for yourself... Didn't like or subscribe to this biased drivel as bas as the BBC...

Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment, however I feel you are being unnecessarily harsh in your comment. I never once said it was a basic car, and I happen to really like the MG ZS (we loved it when we drove it back in 2019). I think it offers a lot for the money, however my verdict is that i feel that the best value in the range is going for the lower spec model with the bigger battery, or waiting for the standard range car to come out (which it now has) to take advantage of the lower price, Government grant at the higher spec. The fact remains, the car sails tantalisingly close to better cars when you stay at the top of the price list. It's not about being biased, but offering what we consider to be the right verdict for our viewers. I hope that helps explain a little more behind our reasoning. I appreciate, however, we are all different and we all like different things and come to different opinions. Thank you again for watching, and perhaps stick with us.

Most cars have a bit of China in them. The best Teslas are currently the China models in terms of finish, the Polestar 2 is a Chinese car, several others as well. Even the phone or laptop you spewed this nonsense from is made in China.
