MG ZS EV - Looking at the quality. Budget or not?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video looks at the quality, fit and feel in the MG ZS EV, UK spec 2020 model. Its a budget EV but far from a budget feel, especially when you compare other vehicles at the same price point.

Wonderful informative video! I really really like this car for its price point. I drove it for a week in Australia and loved it; apart from some of the software niggles and satnav mistakes. As a Tesla owner, I think the MG ZS EV is value-for-money and has features that even my Model S does not have such as the blindspot indicators on the wing mirrors, great all-round visibility, heated seats, and rear window wiper. Also, a 7-year full warranty! I consider the MG ZSEV to be an ideal second EV for me; and I also recommend it to anyone who is considering an affordable family EV.

Had mine since September. Only managed 500 miles as ‘shielding’, but the quality of fit, finish and equipment in the vehicle is self evident. The ONLY spec items I would change, and gladly pay a few £hundred uplift, are front sensors (the length of the bonnet exposes the platforms ICE roots), and the upholstery material. I would vastly prefer real leather trim, even if it was only on the ‘body contact’ surfaces. But the car has a 5 star Euro NCAP rating, a very reasonable range, excellent performance, adequate handling (for an SUV), a 7 year warranty - including full AA cover, and a comprehensive suite of comfort and safety equipment - plus, it’s built by the company both General Motors and VW/Audi trust to build their passenger vehicles for the vast Asian market.

Had mine since August...all good! and having been inside a Mustang Mach E the quality in the MG is far superior. Only drawbacks I've found : lacks a heat pump, battery pre heater would make a difference, no 'app' as in other markets.....this would make off peak charging workable and I of course allow preheating on AC charging. Otherwise excellent value for money and certainly not 'cheap'!!!

Hi Matt, I sat in the '22 version recently. It was at a car show and the first time I'd sat in any ev without a salesman breathing down my neck! Every single thing you mention has been improved, it really is a premium car inside. Yes, its price is over £30k for the Trophy LR, which is the one I'd pick but its easily worth it. Also sat in a Kona & Citroën eC4, neither of which came close to the interior quality, the Cupra Born was fun but not as comfortable and even the big Volvo was only equal to it. Btw I thought I'd heard the Citroën was the most comfortable ev but it was the very least comfy of all these! No intention of buying new when this one should be coming off lease at just the time we can buy in a couple of years though, so look out for my email then! 😁

I've had mine since May, love it. I also tried the Kona but whilst the range is tempting the extra cost £14k at the time was too much for me to justify. The build quality no different and the rear suspension seemed noisier. My other care is a top of the range Passat Estate full leather seats etc, the MG is more comfortable, so easy to drive, almost one pedal. I've not had a chance to do a really long trip yet but I find that the 2 hour range is enough to match requirements for comfort breaks. The only reason a lot of people are able to drive a German car, is because they will lease it, they can't afford to buy it, but can afford the monthly payment. So very true BBB. Clarkson and UK Main Stream Media Brainwashing. Some folks tell me "These people are professionals so must know what they're on about". Yeah ... right. I'd bet a few quid Clarkson is one of the many badge snobs within the UK media who do not know where the bonnet release is on their cars. Cue lots of UK folks regard the ordinary VWs like Golfs as "premium" because of media fake news. Laughable. We have two Golfs in the family. UK Car Consumers appear to like these MG EV cars as the "good word" about these Chinese cars is getting around. My immediate next door neighbour just taken delivery of new ZS EV. It sits where previously a Mercedes or Lexus used to be. That says a lot. These YTs looking at the quality of the materials etc are most welcome. It's what I and many others like to see. No mention of the superb shut lines everywhere on the car. Good as anything else out there and better than most. Shut lines matter .. .. 😉 More seriously, having worked on the older MG6s, these cars are much better in most respects than many here in the UK would have you believe when they first appeared. It's Chinese so must be rubbish mindset. Wrong. Keep up at the front there! Even the various fasteners, nuts, bolts etc on the MG6 are made of better quality, more corrosion resistant materials which is an enormous help when servicing or working on these cars. Far better materials than many other marques more highly regarded. Here I speak from the best evidence available to me. That of my own "hands on" experiences.

Further to my previous post, I get the distinct impression that the major reason the price of the ZS EV is so relatively low is a cocktail of the following: 1) China easily out produces the RoW in EV volumes just for home market consumption, let alone the vehicles it produces for export - So massive economies of scale, unavailable to manufacturers in other Countries, come into play; and, 2) Being Government owned, as many of the other Chinese EV brands are, it is quite likely that, in order to gain market penetration/traction abroad, the build margins set for the MG brand are either set, artificially low, or subsidised by the Chinese Government, or both. The end result is likely that the export market ‘price point’ of MG EV product belies its actual production cost and, therefore, ‘market position’. BTW: Source a right-angled USB-C cable for your phone from Amazon, eBay etc, phone-fit problem solved.

They don't guarantee the mileage/range. The cars are tested on a WLTP or NEDC test cycle. There are so many factors and your driving style has a huge impact.

But of course with climate control, you still have complete control over the heating if you want manual control, but just pressing AUTO means you set the temperature and leave it. Its the lack of knowing the internal temperature which I find annoying. By the time you feel its hot enough, it can then be getting too hot and you've wasted too much energy. Then you turn it down and in time then get too cold and the cycle continues! But of course its personal preferences.

But if MG offer a better spec vehicle, with a longer warranty and a lot cheaper than the VW, suddenly they become a viable option for some, MG are only doing what the Japanese, Koren's have done before them, when trying to get a foothold in a market, but their vehicles depreciated heavier than traditional brands like ford and Vauxhall would have.
