2021 Kia Picanto/Morning review: THIS is one of the cheapest cars on sale!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2021 Kia Picanto S is one of the cheapest cars on sale in Australia. But, does cheap mean...cheap? Paul Maric tests out the Kia Picanto S to see whether it's one you should buy or avoid if you're looking for a basic city runabout.

Cheap car that from the outside looks incredibly basic but once you're inside, you have everything you need. A small cheap car with cruise control, android auto, bluetooth, reverse camera and A/C is absolutely phenomenal. Just because a car is cheap it doesn't mean it needs to be poorly equipped.

I've had my Picanto GT (1L Turbo) for just over a year, it is very fun to drive. The strong torque and long gearing means on the highway you have no problem overtaking or joining the fast lane without holding people up. The car is very well set up for Urban/City streets, and the turbo gives you the confidence to do things that other city cars would have you thinking twice about.

Thank you Paul for reviewing the Kia Picanto, the best selling car in the ultra small/city car segment. As Aussie cities get ever bigger & as SUVs now 'rule the roost' (for now anyway), a v small 'affordable' car for shopping, commutes, parking etc, with the occasional long country drive, make kia's baby a logical buy for the A to B segment. Almost a replacement for the ever present Hy Getz.

Bought my 2021 Kia Picanto S automatic brand new, am now over a year and a half of driving it and would say it's the best car I've ever owned! I picked the S model over the top spec models (GT line and GT) not because of affordability but because I actually like the look of the base S model better. It's very fun to drive, handles bumps very smoothly, light steering, quiet engine, love how the cup holders in the centre console can easily be folded away and used again when needed, very roomy for a small car. It is classed as a micro range car but to me looks and feels more like a light/small car. Despite its low price it is great value for money and quite well built and great quality inside and out and comfy to sit in too, even on long journeys 👌 (travelled from Brisbane to sunny coast Hervey Bay and back one time in the Picanto without an issue). Quite economical on fuel, easy to get in and out of for me due to my disability. Love the peace and mind of the 7 year warranty and roadside assist included 👍.

I took one for a spin the other day and I loved it. It's for my wife, but despite me being a 6'3" male I'm now considering one too. I was surprised how good it looked and felt. Also, it doesn't sound anywhere near as bad as a Toyota Aygo for example. It's only a bit noisy if you need to do a quick acceleration, for example if you need to overtake someone. Of course the automatic gearbox is a bit slow and so on, but the 2021 Picanto really feel like a real car. Not mopedo-like such as the Toyota Aygo for example. I really liked everything about it, except that it didn't have a telescopic steering wheel. It wasn't a problem for me being so tall, but my wife is rather short so the seating distance to the steering wheel was borderline for her.

i purchased a Picanto GTLINE manual mid 2020 and immediately took it on a 1000km bonding exercise thru the environs west of Brisbane and couldn't fault it. Comfort, fuel economy and performance all satisfactory. Ok passing a Bdouble requires a fair bit of forethought and 16" low profiles on coarse chip surface might be a tad noisy for some but a fun little package with 7yr wty for under 20 grand. Good value i reckon. John McKie

Great review Paul - makes me feel a bit nostalgic about my first car in 1977 which was a one-owner (nurse) 1972 Datsun 1200 Coupe ($2100) being the most simple and reliable car I’ve ever owned and I could drive from Melbourne to Adelaide on one tank of fuel which cost $2.80 to fill then -- the Picanto appears well kitted out and a vehicle I would choose as a safe and practical for a young driver starting out - these vehicles are a strong argument for why would you choose a complicated hybrid? - John in SA

Mad that my (almost) brand new Corsa doesn't have wireless Apple Carplay/Android Auto, nor does it have parking sensors or cameras, but this car that's just over half the price has both. They've really hit the nail on the head for a city car; no frills, not overly powerful, just does what you need it to do (get you from point A to point B) with a few modern luxuries to boot. If it's anything like the older models I can see why they're so confident with the 7 year warranty; I have a 2008 plate Picanto sitting outside and the only major work it's needed is a clutch replacing (twice), other than that just routine wear and tear stuff. Still drives fine although when the wind gets bad and you're going... the speed limit... on the motorway, you do sometimes feel like you're about to tip over

Hey Paul, great review, and thanks for doing the volume model. As a part of your reviews, would it be possible to comment on if the vehicle can take a full size spare. This one for example obviously has the space saver, but can it facilitate a full size? Also, would that bring the boot floor up to the height of the folded seats. Just a thought, as many of us in rural Australia need the full size spare, and it would open up our choice to know if the car can accept a full size if the owner wants to pay for it. I hope this makes sense. Cheers.

Here in Pakistan I am thinking to buy this one or to get a sedan which cost around 2k dollars more than that ..and that's car also look and feel amazing comes with dual air bag 4/5 crash rating ..comes from a Chinese brand and one from Malaysian.which cost same as picanto .. but I like hatch back more ♥️..so maybe I go for Kia or otherwise alsvin which have a sun roof sedan .. sadly all of them include 2 air bags only but in Europe they give 6 :-( but I am happy lol at least now we got options here too before we have only honda Toyota or Suzuki which quality sucks here compared to global models

I had one of these for about 18mths and once everyone at work stopped laughing at me and asking if my car had shrunk, it was a groovy little car. I used to laugh every time I went to a shopping centre, this thing was so easy to park! A small, cheap car yes, but it has everything you need, a/c, cruise control, good infotainment system etc and it practically runs on the smell of an oily rag. With fuel at over $2/ltr who needs a gas guzzling monster truck?

For the city it perfectly acceptable. If you want a highway cruiser, get yourself something like a camry or a cerato instead. However, I would pick the 5 speed manual over the 4 speed auto every day of the week. The 4 speed just seem so unrefined. I Would like to see a review of the MG3 and see how it stack up. Most of the review here in Australia don't seem to go into too much details about the overall car.

I use it in mixed driving and found it's perfectly confident on the highway but definitely not a relaxing experience. The surprisingly accurate steering and tight suspension kinda works against it on the highway, not enough dead zone in the steering so you're constantly micro correcting. The suspension on bad highway stretches can be tiring, because the suspension on the GT is quite stiff. A Kia Rio would be a much better choice for highway car, only a tad more expensive and virtually all the same goodies.

  • @madhardcorenick

    @madhardcorenick

@@joytech23 I heard the GT has really firm suspension. From memory, the GT-Line and the base model might be a bit softer, while not provide as accurate of steering compared to the GT. With the Picanto being so lightweight, I believe that an additional weak point with the Picanto on freeway driving. Even a slight gust of wind would cause the car to steer in the wrong direction. The thing that prevents me going for the Kia Rio is that the base model doesn't come with Cruise Control (which I think it appalling in 2021), yet the base model Picanto does. You'd need to go up to the Sport to get Cruise Control, which almost equates to the same price of a Kia Cerato.

@@madhardcorenick Yeah the GT suspension is quite firm in comparison to lower trims (not sure about GT-Line?). I drove the base model and it was so much more comfortable but a bit wallowy. The Picanto actually feels very stable/solid on the highway besides aforementioned lack of centre steer dead zone etc.. Wind and trucks are not an issue at all, comparable to driving something much larger. I had no idea the Rio didn't have cruise in base trims, very odd... I actually wanted the Rio GT-Line, but I did not want to exceed 20k for my first new car.

OK for my daughters first car shortly, but I am no fan of space saver tyres! There is no reason a full size spare cannot be included as standard. I just looked at a new Kia Stinger GT, and it come with a space saver run flat!!! Those little yellow tyres in a supposed Grand Tourer, high performance car. You do not want that in a freeway environment, or hundreds miles away from the nearest country town, especially if on tour.
