2021 Ford Escape/Kuga review: It's one quick SUV!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ford's all-new Escape (also known as the Kuga) packs a hearty punch with a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and new looks that resemble the Ford Focus it shares a platform with. Paul Maric reviews the entry-level Ford Escape to see if it's an SUV you should be adding to your test drive list.

We had a cx5 and for renewal looked at cx5, rav4 and escape for replacement . We chose the escape over the others because looks/specification and great engine, the Rav4 had the corolla engine which is too small, and you had to spend 50k to get a turbo in the Mazda. The Ford ticks all the boxes and then some: proper 8 speed gearbox, all lights internal and external LED, scene lighting, wireless charger, no extra cost for navigation, proper lane keep assist.. Pretty happy with it so far. The rear number plate frame is odd so took that off on day 2.

I'm actually really impressed with the new Escape/Kuga. Base model and is loaded with features, plus great power output! The only things I'm not a fan of are those back doors and no centre armrest...but if I was buying it just for myself I think it would be at the top of my shopping list! At the base price level, I honestly can't think of a better car. Ford really needs to advertise this cleverly as I think if people actually knew what it had as standard equipment it would sell very well. Much better than the Rav 4 👍

Love this review Paul, especially the practicality stuff like driving comfort, it is something you take for granted until it is not there - which I have noticed driving around a Yaris Ascent hire car over the last week! I test drove this one last week and we've opted for it over the CX-5 (got a great deal on a demo car with a few extras eg powered tailgate). Picking it up this afternoon, can't wait!

Tested the base model twice and so far its the only car that actually drives as good as my Audi and ive tested many cars recently. The only disappointment is no leather and power adjusted seats for its relatively high price and competition. Not a cheap car but definitely the best engine Ive driven for a long time .The steering is definitely sharp but felt comfortable on my test drives.

Coming from the previous gen Escape. This is significantly better. Power, torque, handling - ✅ the back middle seat is narrower though than the old gen. I did a test drive with this car a few weeks back and the rest was history 😅 FordPass is a nifty feature but I haven’t used it that much. It’ll be handy come winter season for sure.

Simply superb review. I test drove the Vignale and it was a welcome surprise. It was better than the CX5 comfort minus the corse noise from the 2.5 ltr engine and minus the height to get in, more spacious than a Skoda Karoq and the power delivery through the 8 speed automatic made even more enjoyable than the Kia Sportage or the Hyundai Tucson. My test car showed figures of 7.1 in eco mode which is superb. I think Ford has done a fantastic job with this car. Infact, I am so tempted to buy it after owning only Japanese cars. Perhaps, I might as well.

Your base model is the equivalent of our SEL and our base engine is a 1.5LT 3 cylinder. . In North America we have the following trims : S -> SE -> SEL -> Titanium

Fair review and a great car - obviously it’s mainstream and built to a price in certain areas that you rightly point out, but this level of performance, tech and chassis engineering in a mainstream, medium SUV is cause for celebration! I’d probably never buy one, but I’m glad I live in a time where a very mainstream manufacturer builds an affordable car with things like an 8 speed transmission, built in modem connectivity, aluminium bonnet and suspension control arms (front and rear...until recently the domain strictly of mega $ luxury or sports cars), and laminated (almost unbreakable) accoustic front door glass, again usually only an option on high end luxury cars.

Re styling that extended boot lip will be a magnet for dust/dirt and I don't like the positioning of the reverse camera. Looks like an afterthought! Interior is still typical Ford - very bland with no style. Like the soft touch knee rest. Seems to have good features for the price. Nice engine, fuel usage a bit high though. Overall I like the look if it and it seems to be decent but also typical Ford with the below standard interior styling/quality.

I don't hate this. I think the ST-Line would be a better choice than the base model escape. Not to mention, I think the seats would be more comfortable as well. If you do happen to get a chance to sit in a higher tier escape, do let us know about the seat comfort in those models :) Also, I'm pretty sure that the escape can be run on e10. So technically you don't need to spend the big bucks on 95 octane fuel unless your in an area that doesn't have a servo with e10.

We had the st line escape for 3 days while our fiesta was being repaired (for about the 9th time haha). The Escape looks beautiful and ridiculously fast. The steering is weird, really light and kind of “jerky”. Ours had the tech pack, everything you could want. Really liked it, it’s on the list for our next vehicle. Hopefully more reliable than the fiesta!

Good to see this review. I test drove the ST-line FWD up Mt Dandenong tourist rd and was impressed by the power, but I agree that the steering, though cornered well, felt odd. Also, the brakes are quite grippy. I think the ST-Line is even more sporty than the base model as it has 18" wheels. I'd like to test drive the AWD model. I'm considering the Escape, Mazda CX-5 or RAV4. Have you reviewed these?

  • @jg3354

The steering does feel different but you don't really notice it after a while. In my test drives the ST Line rode more comfortably than the base Escape. I had expected the ST Line's sporty suspensions to deliver a bumpier ride but it was actually less. Brake grippiness seems to depend on the individual cars. The ones I test drove were ever so slightly grippy but the Escape I bought cannot be described as grippy at all. Yes, Paul does indeed have the RAV4 review! But not the CX5, I don't think.

I compared them with standard Pirelli and the Pirelli were quieter and lasted way longer. As it happens I've just ordered a new Kia Sorento and that comes on 19" Continentals as did my previous Volvo XC90. I have the original fit 20" Continental tyres on immaculate Volvo wheels in my garage. Unfortunately at 275mm width, they are too big to fit the Sorento. The Ford Escape is clearly the better choice IMO. Advanced safety features come as standard inclusions (rear cross traffic warning, blind spot notification, lane centring, etc). Not to mention its punchier engine, and the Ford Pass app. Escape ST Line's inside is not inferior to Karoq while looking a lot better on the outside, but that's just a matter of personal opinion. The brakes just grab no matter how gentle you try to be, the seats are like wooden planks and agree the interior layout looks very plain. I got a Ford Puma last year as a loan car and that felt the same in terms of the interior layout. The only positive is that yes, it's very zippy so darting through traffic is easy.
