Been itching to get the 2021 R nineT 719 Option for such a long time. Finally it's a reality. What a way to start 2022.

Wonderful motorcycle, great review! Looked like a perfect day to ride!

Good review as usual. I recently had the opportunity to ride the R9T Pure as a loan bike whilst my GS was getting serviced and I ended up quite disappointed with the ride and the vibrations I got through the bars and footpegs at 100-110 kph. My GS definitely was the better ride probably due to the telelever front end but my Triumph T100 (865cc air cooled) was also a smoother and more comfortable ride at 100-110 kph which I found quite surprising. FYI I also used to own a 2007 BMW RT and that was also much smoother engine with no vibes through the bars or footpegs like the R9T Pure. Personally whilst it is a good looking bike I wouldn't pay the premium for an R9T.

I had the chance to demo one and fell in love with it before leaving the starting parking lot. That low slung weight is a breeze to move around. It is very vibrational and I had to shake off the tinglies from the throttle hand a few times. Either way I still want one

Thanks Scott for the great review. Helped me make a very tough decision. Way too much plastic and high tech TFT screens for my liking on most modern bikes, including the new GS. At my age I don't need to prove anything speed wise. I do like a bike with some character and cheekiness, this ticks the boxes! When BMW Motorrad reduced the new bike by $2300AU helped somewhat.

It costs 20k because of all the billet accessories. It's 16k but if you forgo the suspension and get the pure your looking at around 11k

Actually on this air cooled boxer the maintenance is fairly simple and the maintenance hours charged are lower compared to other motor configurations. So far after 3 services on my BMW 900XR (which is a liquid cooled parallel twin), each service has been cheaper than my KTM 1290 Super Duke R or all 3 of the 4 Honda's (Blackbird/VFR800/ST1100) that I've owned. Not to mention a few other bikes like my Ninja 600 but they were track day bikes and had special needs and were not road legal. So, when I take an honest look at the cost of ownership of all my "road" bikes, the BMW900XR is one of the cheapest bikes I've owned. And I'm assuming this simple RnineT, which is a back to basics bike, is the same as my 900XR, if not cheaper. take care, Scott

That is one exceptionally beautiful roadster. IMO that Air/Oil cooled "camhead" motor is the pinnacle of the classic boxer before they modernized it with water cooling, a wet clutch and then eventually the current shiftcam. I was disappointed when BMW decided to replace the telelever front end with conventional forks on all of their boxers except for the GS and RT. I understand why they did it, however IMO what the telelever sacrifices in the twisties or on a racetrack is far exceeded by its overall refinement on the highway for every day use, and its funky look gives a roadster exceptional character. I want an R9T classic bad!

Yea agreed, love the telelever on the GS & RT! This is one of the main reasons that I will one day buy a GS or an RT (when I'm older😁) the ride is surpassed by none, especially on long trips.

As always, great review! These models just dont get a thumbs up for ergos.for tall folks like my 6'3" frame, but they still look fabulous.

Then go for the Urban version of this and you can raise the suspension and the seat is about 3" higher, my BMW dealer has on on demo and I took it home for a few days but didn't make a video of it...too lazy I guess, I had it when my XR was in for service. But it was too high for me, 5'10", I was on the balls of my feet, so it should fit you no problem.

Your blogs are by far the very best, you definitely do all the background work. My question to you I’m having a hard time deciding between the 2022 speed twin and they are 9T. What are your thoughts help me out please. Lol

Thank you. I like both bikes and they are equal as far as quality and fit & finish. Electronics, still about the same. So where do they differ? Well, looks and engine configuration, boxer vs parallel twin and this leads to the sound. I love the sound of the 270° fireing order of the Speed Twin, the boxer well, that is a very unique sound and takes some getting used to...I really don't care for it. The performance is also a difference, the Speed Twin will go much faster in a corner and the suspension is also tuned a little more to the performance side and the 9T is a little more relaxed, brakes are much better on the Speed too, again more to the performance side BUT and this is a big BUT if you never push the bikes to keep up with say nakeds or sport bikes, you'll never notice the difference in suspenion or brakes. What you may also consider, if you still can't decide, is the dealer, which one do you like better, which one is closer, which one has the better service/reputation...etc. Cause once you buy a bike, you are also beginning a relationship with that dealer too. Kind of like a marrage, if it's a rocky start then it'll end with a...well we know that answer don't we 😒 Good luck, Scott

Though happy with my BMW F 900 R, I‘m envious, that you could test the beautiful R nine T. Does an air cooled (boxer) motor have more torque at low RPM than a liquid cooled one, what about load change reaction which I mentioned at the „older“ model, is gear shifting without clutch possible/ healthy for the motor, what do you think about the ergonomics during longer rides? As usual, a very entertaining and informative review, Scott!

Hi Marcel, no the liquid-cooled boxer has more torque all over the rev-range. If done incorrectly clutch-less shifting is bad for any transmission dry or wet, it's all about the gears and if you time it wrong they will wear down faster and eventually not hold and slip and fail. But yes, I usually find it easier to do clutch-less shifting on a dry clutch vs. wet. Longer rides, well, you can do it but I wouldn't last very long on this bike, 2-3 hours is about all I'd want to do on this, then I'd want to get off it a.s.a.p. take care, Scott

That old twin cam 1170 motor is a peach. Far lumpier than the new LC motors but I kinda miss that.

Hello, Scott. Thank you for this review. As usual, it is awesome. I want to ask you a question regarding the engine of this bike since I am considering to buy one. I dont like shaky and twitchy motorcycles. I rode R1250RT and I did NOT enjoy the engine at all. It felt like it does not want to rev. K1600 GT was much better in regards to this. How does this engine compare to 1250 from BMW? Do you think i would enjoy riding it?

Man this bike is sexy. And with cruise control, it really has everything one could want in an everyday bike. Those spoked wheels look a bit different. Did they finally switch to rims that support tubeless tires?

Have to say, coincidentally I have a F900XR and today I ordered the R9T(pure with some extras). I tried the R9T yesterday and thought it was so much better than the F900XR, it feels premium and is a lot easier to manhandling. I don't do much trips and the F900XR doesn't provide a perfect wind protection even with the Vario windshield. I'll probably try an aftermarket windshield on the 9T, does anyone recommend one? I'm 5'8

I love the BM boxers Scott! I currently own 3. USUALLY BMW’s attention to detail is second to none. So why have a 719 Edition, then partially obscure the 1? Really? You can plainly see the 9 decal is placed correctly on the tank plastics, so why not the 1? Resize or place the stickers elsewhere. Just a tad OCD!😵‍💫 Actually before I bought the R18, this was heavily on my radar! And no, the decals did not decide the outcome!🤪🤣😎👍🏼

Scot Awesome revue! It seems BMW has stepped into the Cafe Racer Scene. I own the Triumph Thruxton R with the Cafe Fairing and Vance & Hines slip-on's with the DB killers removed I also have the factory high compression head installed. The BMER is very nice but it will never be in the GENRE of a Cafe Racer INMHO! They did a fantastic job however creating a unique motorcycle that resembles one. It is a pretty bike with nothing really hot about it. 🙌👏👍☝🤙🤘✌👌🖖✋😊

All measurable things considered, ya gotta love how the R nine T makes the Kawasaki Z900RS look so good . . .

Very.good test! I own 2020 R9T 719 and came to similar remarks as you. I am missing some mid range grunt and the bike is generally on the limit of being small. However I am 1.85 and 110 kgs and I dont feel crunched in seat. Comparing to other competitors quality is top notch.

Great bike, great review. On a higher level, I was wondering when last you did not give two thumbs up for a chassis. Are they generally better now?

Yes, the suspension is improved but it still just does not feel right, there is something missing, it just does not jell with the over-all bike. Maybe it's missing the telelever front. 🙄☺🤨

Wilber’s rear shock vastly improves this bike but for the $ it should have come standard.

I am curious that you didn't mention the shaft drive, how it rides and benefits over a chain?

Oh, it never occurred to me cause all boxers are shaft drive, it's what they are known for, their trade mark so to speak and they've been that way since the beginning and nothings changed on them for well over 80 years now. take care, Scott

I like your comparison charts normally. This one was a little strange, though. The direct competitor for the BMW IMO is the Speed Twin. The BMW is a very lovely looking bike, with premium parts. But, it's just not worth that much money for what it is. The Triumph, although without the high spec brakes and suspension, is much cheaper (in the UK, at least) and just as well finihsed.

Well, there are two groups the lower & higher performance groups and the Speed Twin is in the "higher" performance group with the likes of: Indian FTR1200, BMW 1250R and Thruxton RS & Ducati Diavel 1260. Now it would be unfair to compare the RnineT to these. Hence why it's in the lower performance group with the Bonneville, Moto Guzzi V9, 1100 Rebel & Ducati Scrambler 1100, which two of those are air-cooled just like the RnineT. Now, agreed, power wise the RnineT is on par with the higher group but that's the only thing, the rest of the bike is just not made to perform with those other bikes. Ride safe, Scott

@@NothingToProveLove your reviews, even when I have, slight, disagreements with you. Price is a major arbiter here, and the BMW is certainly up there with the biggies. I saw one the other day and wanted to cuddle it, it was so well finished. Furtive selfie with bike in background instead.

I imagine a new one is just around the corner. It's been around for quite a few years now. Do you think a new one would manage to retain an air cooled engine, or should we expect some kind of variant of the r1250 motor?

Na, it was just updated this year, so I don't think any time soon. But who knows how any OEM reacts to market trends 😁

It would be great if BMW made that adjustable fork optional equipment for the F900R.

Nope, BMW got their ROI on the tooling for that motor a decade ago (when they change it to liquid-cooled) and now it's just paying out dividends to the share holders when we buy one. But it's "what the market will bear" and until capitalism fades away, we'll always have things like this happening. ride safe, Scott

@@NothingToProve Thanks Scott. Maybe you can help me. I have a GSX S750 and love the 750 K5 motor but want something with a bit more torque (faster for everyday riding) and a bit of windprotection. The Suzuki handles great, so the next bike would have to have handle at least at the same level. What would you recommend? Price is not that important

@@khalidibnwalidk3544 Have you seen or tested the Kawasaki Z900 RS Cafe. The screen provides some wind protection and the motor has a ton more torque than the Suzuki. Looks really nice too.

I don't think so, they are two different bikes that go about being a bike in different ways. The ST is more performance oriented (sporty liquid cooled) and this is more for customization (cruising air cooled). They even feel totally different when riding them, ST more aggressive, sport "roadster" and this more laid back, relaxed "roadster". You can ride both in an aggressive manner it's just that the ST almost demands it and this wants to be more relaxed. The ST is more of a Pitbull dog and this is more of a Labrador Retriever. ride safe, Scott

Taxes, taxes, taxes, that's my Netherlands. BTW (MWS) , BPM, (tax on cars and bikes) "accijns" and so on. Same reason why you pay 2,09 euro for a liter Euro 95 today. Example: A Suzuki Jimney costs 17.000 euro in Belgium and 29.000 euro in The Netherlands. BPM goes unreasonably up when a gas-engine uses more gas and causes more CO2. Long live Europe! We suffer from the bad things and don't enjoy the good things...

Currently have a 2016 street twin. Trying to make up my mind between the triumph speed twin and the R nine T. Which one would be your preference?

Ah, depends on what you are looing for in a bike. They are two different animals. Triumph changed the Speed Twin in 2021 from a roadster to more of a naked (performance) bike. So more of a pit bull as compared to the RnineT is still a relaxed roadster, so more of a Labrador retriever. The new speed twin says to me "let's go go go go, faster faster faster" and the RnineT says to me "hey, let's relax and we can go fast, a little, if you want". But you can get a 2019 or 2020 Speed and it's just like the RnineT in that aspect. But the Speed sounds better 😁 take care, Scott

Yeah--too small (6-3 here). What's strange is that he had that Beemer up to 120 mp + and when my Katana (better for tall riders IMO) gets near 90 it's crouch time or things start to wiggle... Both weigh similar, & no/small windshield--maybe the low boxer and lower stature helps with that.

Try the Urban version of this? with the high seat and you can also raise the suspension. I took a raised Urban home with me for a few days when my XR was in for service and I was on the balls of my feet and I'm 5'10". So it should be perfect for you at that height.

It was 200 kph, which is 124 mph. Fun on any naked! 😁

Great video. I wonder is the XSR 900 could make the list. If so, how would it stack up?

I have a 2016 and it has the same rear shock. Overall the suspension is not good and handling is nothing to write home about.

almost everyone is replacing the rear shock, including myself (ohlin bm-440), standard suspension is horrible

This year the monoshock was updated with the new "travel-dependent" shock (it's not the same as a progressive spring). I tried to explain the difference in the video, sorry I didn't do a well enough job. 😥 take care, Scott

Even the updated adjustable rear shock is terrible & needs a Wilber shock upgrade.

BMW r 90t

If I'd take a boxer, I would save the extra bucks and go for the Urban. Higher seat and the sound is also way better. Sure this NineT has better forks, breaks etc, but you don't really need that. But I rather go for the Ducati scrambler sport or the Speed Twin.

Kawasakir Z900R SE, looks better in overall boday shape, R nine T looks empty from seating point to the rear wheel

Being a fan of BMWs, owning mostly RTs, although the R19 seems like a nice bike, for me it would be useless. I know it’s a naked bike, so really the bike is probably good for rides around town. It seems rather expensive for a toy. With the abundance of inventory at your local BMW dealer I think others feel the same way. The R18? Don’t get me started.

You obviously know very little about bikes. I have an R9t and use it for routine day trips of about 250 miles. A friend of mine has a newish 1250 GSA and an R9t. Since getting the R9T he has done 2 trips overseas. One of about 5000 miles and he's still on the second one of about 4500 miles. So much for "good for rides around town" . What a lightweight rider you are 😅😊😂

sorry guys... Please show me the previous 718 options because this one is plain ugly as hell... The "original" classic colors are much nicer, or the 719 full brushed aluminium scheme...this one just reminds me of an insecure guy begging for attention and using high impact colors to hide defects (that the bike does not have, except the price). From this bunch I still prefer the Racer, but too agressive on the rider position. Even better looking than the Thrxton R with fairing.

So the new GoPro’s are no better and seemingly worse than any bad experience you’ve ever had with a Insta360. It’s sad. Don’t come near a hero 10. And if the hero 9 was any indication, they won’t get it fixed until it’s been out 9 months and the 11 rumors are in full swing. GoPro has ruined their name IMO

Not digging that ridiculous red paint on the frame....
