BMW R NineT | Better Than The Speed Twin?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've recently been riding the Triumph Speed Twin so I'm sticking with the retro classic theme and trying the 2021 BMW R nineT. How does this classic inspired Boxer Twin compare to the newly revamped Triumph?
Well stick around to find out!

Love an RnineT me, lovely premium feel and love those clocks - when I was in the retro market I just didn’t fancy another boxer engine though (especially the “old” one)…for me the Speed Twin pips it but then I like lazy riding and love the idea of owning Triumphs. Great video again Choppsy - you’re really rather good at this!

Great way to describe this bike as 75% playtime and 25% ride enjoyment, find that exact same ratio when riding my R1250R and at some point I've even asked myself why not just go the extra 25% into a speed triple. especially coming from sport bikes and even more especially on the rare occasion I get dusted by a supernaked 😆

I rode one of these a couple of years ago and loved it. My bike is a K1300S and it does psychotic very well. It might take a bit to get the lower horse power into my head but as I'm getting older now, it's sounding like a good proposition.

Let's say it, anyone with an eye for design loves the R9T range. It feels like a special bike to ride, and although I enjoyed my Gen 1 Speed Twin it kind of gets lost in the Triumph range with Streets and other Bonnevilles. The R9T seems unique and I love the running characteristics of the Boxer. A keeper!

what kind of riding do you do with these bikes? How long of a ride? I ride a honda monkey and I love doing long rides (200+ miles) but I cannot go faster than 60 mph so that's the limiting factor. But the monkey is super comfortable for all day rides. I wonder if i should get a bigger bike but the weight is intimidating. the monkey is only 220 lbs.

  • @theultimatef1geek463

    @theultimatef1geek463

@@edwardchoe1495 Do not worry about the weight. Its a bit of an issue at crawling speeds but the weight disappears once you get moving. The gyroscopic principle helps to keep your bike upright, so the faster you go the lighter it will feel. Its possible to corner just as good on heavy bikes, and maneuvering through traffic will be a breeze if you get a short wheelbase streetfighter.

I have the 2021 Scrambler. My first bike ever. I've tested a few other bikes practicing, Honda, Yamaha etc, street bikes. I must say that I love the NineT. Good ride height, enough space for feet when shifting, awesome sound, and above all, the responsiveness through the revs. Not very nice to ride on the highway though since it doesn't have covers. I often get questions and comments about it. My first bike and I hope I will get to give it to my son when he's old enough.

I have a 2017 and everything you said was spot on, it's a combination of a retro and a naked bike. There is a lot of aftermarket and customization you can do on the R9T range. The R9T Pure would go up against the Speed Twin the R9T classic/roadster would go against the Thruxton although the Thruxton RS is probably a bit sportier.

I had exactly the same bike, but new back in the end of 2017. Akrapovic pipes were standard then, no cruise available, but went for the heated grips. Bought a Sargent seat which transformed the comfort (did not look much different from standard, but oh was it better !!). Only other changes were a dart flyscreen and a passenger grab rail from Unit Garage which blended in well. Loved the turn-in on the bike as it has a smaller front wheel than the rest of the range (17 inch) - the urban had a larger front wheel and the scrambler larger still). It has soooo much torque, listening to you ride it brings it all back 🙂. For the models back then, the standard R9T was actually the top of the range bike (bit weird, but that is BMW for you). It was a very special bike to own and ride. Only sold it as I was addicted to changing bikes every year or two for a while !! Thanks for the vid !

I'm going to have to ride the Speed Twin to see if I concur now but I do believe you've given a pretty accurate judgment. The R9T may be more expensive but you are getting a few things more. That boxer though is such an easy going motor you can ride it just as lazily to enjoy the views as any bike I've ever ridden so not sure i could agree there. One thing you don't touch on though is these bike are not much good at anything other than offering a stylish Sunday ride out. Really just a second bike for enjoying the ride when you're in the mood.

The handling on my 2020 Speed twin was abysmal due to the poor quality of the suspension...... A set of YSS shock absorbers and decent progressive fork springs with pre load adjusters transformed the bike. Shouldn't have to do that on a new 12k bike..... The newer Speed Twin with the usd forks are better,I imagine, but don't look as good,or suit the bike,in my opinion.

Have owned both..... Triumph for looks and image. BM for quality and reliability. Have a Z900rs on it's way,so should be interesting to compare the 3. As mentioned here, very difficult to ride the BM at sensible speeds as it performed so well..... which is why I sold it. Had the feeling that my licence wouldn't have lasted, too long. Fantastic, and fun motorcycle.

Regarding making it onto a track bike, there was a BMW Motorrad BoxerCup - BMW R nineT Racer series run across Europe back in 2020.

I love how you talk about the ride and the bike. I’d like to hear more on this… how would you define bikes that are about the ride? Do you have some examples of bikes that are really good at enjoying the ride?

Thanks for the honest review. Just a little confused on a couple of points. 1. I mentioned the no fuel gauge to the BMW Motorrad sales guy. His comment "Yes it has, the fuel light comes on then you have 60-80km to fill up? 2. Size wise I am 5'7" 30" in seam, fits me nicely? When I sat on the F750GS it felt like a much larger bike & top heavy. I've not sat on the Speed Twin, Seat height 809mm v R nineT seat height 805mm? 3. Wet weight nothing in it really Speed Twin 216kg v R nineT 221Kg + weight would be lower down on the BM I guess. Both bikes are special and we are so lucky to have manufactures producing such awesome machines.

Great review 👏, love the look of this style of bike. But I can't help but think for every minute of riding you've got 10 minutes of cleaning. Beautiful bike for the sitting room.

Know what you mean - last year I had the MT09 and I seemed to notice the countryside less on that bike - too busy focusing on the ride itself. I think part of the problem was that the engine was so effortlessly capable that I was always looking to create a bit more drama

Back to the bike: I rented an Urban GS and was absolutely giddy about the strong, exuberant engine coupled with the terrific handling and brilliant brakes! I decided then and there, I must have one... BUT WHICH VERSION? I must have a tachometer, so that's my minimum requirement. Love this bike---Kudos, BMW!

BeMoto didn’t want to insure my R9T even I’m already a customer the reason because I don’t have a garage!!! Where the bike is parked is much safer than a garage computer said NO 😤 Sorry not the place to complain but as it’s one of your sponsors just putting it there. The bike is an absolute dream to ride 😎😍

Actually, I'm not a fan of beMoto, either. They were the only insurance company to decline insuring my 1 year old Ducati - as I only had 1 years NCD (having come back to bikes after a 40 year break)and I didn't have 2 years NCD they 'required' - yet I already had an older BMW insured with them! Both bikes securely garaged. They also sent a threatening letter requesting proof of the previous 1 year NCD for the BMW.....despite getting an email from somebody else at beMoto acknowledging receipt of it! Unbelievable, and I gave them hell as a result, receiving a grudging apology in return. Yeah, naw.......I think they spend too much sponsoring some channels - it was 44 teeth led me to originally insure with them - and their actual coverage and service is decidedly so so. As for the R9T.....yeah, naw.....styling is meh, and I think Ducati finish and detail their bikes better, now. To give just one example, the much vaunted BMW S1000RR, killer bike to ride, but lacklustre, cheapo plastic and stickers everywhere. The older BMW's are better made and finished.

Must admit, I prefer the RnineT, to the Speed Twin...........but i'm slightly biased, as I own a R1200R. From what i've found, any factory fitted "Akra" cans, are restricted to normal emissions and noise levels. My advice, buy one with "standard" cans, fit an aftermarket can. Usually it adds about £800 to £1000 to the purchase price for a fitted Akra, after market will cost similar, and you can remove the baffle on after market ones, not usually possible on factory fitted! Great video, as always Chops, keep up the good work.

G'day LCR. A very good video and a very good machine but i still like the Speed Twin. It'll do everything the RnineT can at a cheaper cost, its for me.

Nice review. I had one in2016 still miss it. Still can’t believe it has no fuel gauge. It was a real pain trying to calculate mileage and look at the odometer all the time…

I had one for three years and it was a real Jeckyle & Hyge bike. Nice and smooth and slow if you wanted it to be but pull that throttle back and it turns into a quick well handling bike that's plenty fast enough in the real world. When they first came out they were being compared to the triumphs but I personally don't think it's a relevant comparison, other than for a bit of fun.

Good review LCR...that engine is great 👍, lots of grunt and tons of character. I'm always pondering between the Rninety and the Triumph scrambler xe...I wish there was a way of fitting the retro clocks of the Speed Twin or the Rninety to the Triumph scrambler!!. I recognised Harting Hill on your ride...I'm always after the perfect blast up there!! By the way, Pier City Customs over Shoreham way do some great Rninety Customs. Cheers, Steve

I bought the exact same bike new in 2018 , I replaced the front forks at 3200 kms due to knocking noises over bumps , it was perfect until I got to just over 7000 kms & got the same problem again so I had enough if it then & got rid of it after having it just for 6 months , I was disappointed because I liked the bike , it didn’t like the backroads here in Ireland , I bought a 2019 s1000r sport after that & never got a problem great all round bike but that’s gone now for a new busa bought last July & loving it

I had the original R90 in the day and also the Bonne in the 70's. I thought the R90 had the edge then and still think so now. mind you, I still own both BMW twins and British twins and enjoy them both for how they make me feel. I now own other bikes to go fast on though :)

Maybe it's because I daily a suzuki c50 but the new speed twin turned me into an absolute hooligan. Surprised to hear you say it's less rewarding to ride fast than this. I have got to get a ride on one of these.

Would like the upgraded light and cruise control/heated grips (maybe even the traction control), but the sound is way off compared to my 2016 model. Its OG demeanor is what it attracts me the most, so I'll keep it for life.

Nice one Chopsy 👍. I'm on my 3rd Beemer boxer now. My current 1250RS is bloody brilliant but does not quite have the character of the 1170 Hexhead, single or twin cam. I do miss the foibles/character* (*delete as appropriate) of the motor of my old R1200S.

More expensive than the Triumph but better. My favourite is the Urban G/S. Just a shame it costs around 20,000 GBP in Thailand. Made in Germany so subjected to big import duty, but not the 100 per cent it used to be. Excellent review.

Got mine about a year ago. It’s a keeper for sure. No maintenance shaft drive is ferah to havle. I probably will keep it till I die. It can be the Swiss Army knife of bikes with simple mods (the scrambler model). You can literally turn it into a bare bones gs for touring and have the best looking urban bike when you simply remove the touring mods. All it takes is 30 minutes to put on and remove the touring mods(wind screen, handlebar riser, peg adjustments) You may want to upgrade the seat as well. I use the unit garage gel seat which both looks better and is much more comfortable.

Took a 2020 for a spin last week. Always loved the look but wasnt as impressed with the ride as I hoped. First gear very short and clunky into 2nd. The rest was pretty smooth though. So few extra revs, took off in second and with all the torque was fine. Wish I knew how to turn the tc off though! Couldn't get the front to come up
