2020 BMW F 900 R Review | MC Commute

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

BMW’s all-new 2020 F 900 R naked bike (starting at $8,995) certainly made an impression on us during its official US press ride introduction in Santa Barbara, California (learn more in the 2020 BMW F 900 R Review First Ride). And after logging a few hundred more miles on this Berlin-built motorcycle we’re even bigger fans of it, especially for around-town commuting.
--
In spite of its relatively hefty 465-pound curb weight, the F 900 R impresses with athletic handling. It goes around low-speed bends better than it should for a motorcycle of its size, plus the suspenders filter the effects of worn pavement well. Much of the credit goes to its well-calibrated suspension components, which are some of the best we’ve sampled on a production streetbike at this price point. Bridgestone’s awesome Battlax S21 rubber further complements the handling-offering track-grade grip and sure-footed stability at speed.
We’re equally mesmerized with the character and power dynamic of the 895cc parallel twin. It combines the best features of a traditional V-twin, including punchy-feeling bottom-end torque, with the intrinsic rumble and rowdy intake roar that makes this configuration so lovable. Yet the engine is much more compact, which aids in packaging and reduces weight and complexity.
The engine drinks fuel from a 3.4-gallon fuel tank, which could be bigger. On a side note, the F 900 XR version gets an extra 0.7-gallon capacity. During spirited riding we netted a 38-mpg average. This nets a range of 129.2 miles. A super-slick-looking 6.5-inch color display keeps tabs on machine vitals and is manipulated via Motorrad’s signature multifunction wheel--a feature introduced on the premium K 1600 GTL eight years ago. Furthemore, the display can be paired via Bluetooth with the free BMW Motorrad Connected iOS app, which allows turn-by-turn navigation.
Other creature comforts include a cozy and well-supportive rider and passenger saddle. and the ability to adjust all of the control surfaces (levers, brake pedal, and handlebar). The rider can also choose between two global riding modes (Rain and Street). For a $350 upcharge, riders can access Ride Mode’s Dynamic and Dynamic Pro settings that enable IMU-powered automatic stability control and ABS. Bold LED lighting with optional corner functionality makes the R-bike especially friendly for night rides.
Riders who desire a fun and capable around-town naked bike will be pleased with the F 900 R. Factor in its ultra-high build quality and careful attention to subtle details, like the angled tire valve stems and braided steel brake lines, and you have a motorcycle that looks and rides much better than you’d anticipate based on MSRP.

MC Commute rules, Adam. I enjoy riding with you. Great commentary. Thanks for the video content and make sure to keep the rubber side down (when not yanking wheelies). Is the Z H2 MC Commute on the horizon? I know...I won't shut up about it. And keep the hair. Looks a bit wild. Like the riding. Just a bit nutso. 'Cause it's a motorcycle.

This bike has been alluding me forever. I wanted the F 900 XR for so long, but this one flew under the radar. Then the BMW Roadster bug bit me. I have never heard Adam give such high praise for any bike's handling characteristics out of all the reviews I've seen from him across ALL bikes. That's really saying something about this F 900 R!!

Hi there, Just wanted to drop you a quick note. Thanks for the fairly comprehensive ride review on this motorcycle. I did some research on the different makes and models within this class of motorcycle, and kept coming back to the BMW. Picked it up last Saturday and well I haven't been able to ride it much as DMV is still shut down and by appointment only here in Oregon. Rode it home from the dealership and OMGoodness!!! More to come I suppose. Thanks again as I don't rely on you tube content, but yours is fantastic!!! Thanks again and stay safe!!

Just bought this bike recently and loving every bit of it. Still breaking period so haven't tested to the full potential and dynamic pro. But overall build and ride quality is top-notch. Very easy to ride might be a little heavier but most of the weight at the bottom so nice center of gravity. It is an insanely balanced bike on low or high speed. Its TFT is just next level so much to play with. I named it SKY so I am in love with SKY :) The only downside I found is fewer after-market mods are available but overall no need to do anything extra to the bike except the tail tidy. Here in Canada it is really hard to find a base model available at the Dealers so with some accessories this can be little bit expensive but you can still order base model just need t wait for the delivery but even if it is a base model still is a lot of bike for it's price plus the BMW batch.

If it cut 30+ pounds off and gained an extra 10hp and 5 ft lbs of torque plus all the accessorized pieces as standard operating equipment this would beat out the likes of KTM, Triumph, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, and Kawasaki in one fell swoop like they did with the S1000RR years ago.

Owning the monster and planning on getting the BMW this year i can tell you they're both great. The monster will always hold a special place for me since my first bike was a 696 but honestly you can't go wrong with either. Monster will run you 3k more but imo its worth it

I timed your 0-60mph launch from the traffic light starting at 6:56 and you got about 3.8-3.9 seconds including roll out obviously. I'm sure the bike (and rider) could achieve something in the low 3s or high 2s though.

If this has a 270 degree crank like he said then its not that unique seeing as 270° parallel twins are Triumph's bread and butter and now Aprilia have intoduced a 270° parallel twin also. Triumph, KTM have parallel twins are more exciting imo with the beastly low end torque on the Triumph and the continuous power delivery of the KTM 790/890. But Im glad BMW offeres a option to those who dont want a litre sports bike like the S1000R or a modern retro with an air/oil cooled lump in the R Nine T.

I've seen this bike at the dealership, looks good, but not great. I have also seen the Duke 790, which looks way better and I know has more power and less weigh. Probably the BMW is more reliable and more comfortable. Funny thing, the base F900R is more expensive here in Mexico than even the 890R (haven't seen it yet) and pretty close to price with the Street Triple RS 2020. If I were to buy a naked it would be either the Duke 890R or the Street Triple, maybe even also the 790 since it's pretty cheap here.

Nice review & a very interesting bike. Just a bit unsure of how much it might end up costing once you add all the good extras. BMW are naughty like that. A 9k bike actually ends up costing 10 or 11K+ when you want a reasonable spec.

I've been turning wrenches for 50 years, and I've never found dealer service superior to my own loving care. That "Service Overdue" nag looks a LOT like it requires a special "dealer-only" tool to reset. This feature alone would make me hesitate to buy such a machine.

In defense of my position, I just want to say that some things like a drive chain need lube at least every 500 miles, while others like engine oil need it annually or 5K miles; plugs 15K, cam chain or valve clearance 30K, etc. If I lube my chain at 300 miles to prepare for a trip, can I reset that counter before its time? What about tread depth or tire pressure? That should be checked periodically too, but I doubt it's in the system. I honestly don't think a nag on the instrument cluster is worth the trouble, especially if its so simple-minded that it trips every 4K miles, or if it requires a special tool to reset. However, I know that some people have plenty of money and pay their local BMW dealer to do every little thing, so perhaps these people are the target demographic. This seems to be the case for German cars, too. Too much unnecessary technology runs up maintenance costs with little true benefit. That's why the resale value on such vehicles plummets so quickly after the sale. Am I raving? 😁 Perhaps if someone used a standard automotive OBD-II interface, I would relax a bit. Any comments on that, people? 🤷‍♂️

I had both F800R and MT-07. The MT-07 is just a great motor and good looking bike, but is too a near dangerous bike, as if it wasn't well ballanced project. Not even close. F800R rides much better and faster than MT-07. Much. In a bumping corner near my city, you just can't go over 160Km/h with the MT-07 cause it starts swinging the handle bar, and you have to close the gas to fix it. Meanwhile in the same situation the F800R could be at 185 or even more, rock solid at turns! All told, 0-10, MT-07 is a 7 out of 10, and mainly for the awesome engine, wich makes 10 out of 10. While F800R makes 9 out of 10 - in every aspect but the controversial design, wich was fine for me.
