I've just bought one on the back of this (and a few other) reviews. It's a cracking bike, mines pretty much the same spec as this but with the touring pack. The seat in the review is the standard seat. I've done 500 miles in just over 4 weeks, I can't wait for the running in service to be done so I can really stretch her legs. Great honest review of a great bike 👍🏻🏍️

Got one , done 4k miles on it this summer, I'm 6ft, no issues with my nees, it comes with a plug to unlock Dynamic Pro, thought it's a track mode really. It's great just about right amount of power, and it handles fantastic, you can take liberty's with it, It is more lively than the xr different gearing, I had my seat done with memory foam, so I would guess that you have the comfort seat, and I've got the blue one😁, So yes if you are looking for a sporty roadster, not a naked sports bike, then consider this bike, And there is going to be a single make race series in BSB with this bike next year.

Like you, the looks to me weren’t all that great. I liked the bike almost purely as a logical purchase for my next bike since I’m currently in the market. I went to the dealer however, saw it in black, and I just couldn’t stop staring at it and loved the hard angles and dynamism of it all. It’s a very modern looking machine without going overboard I feel. I typically love Kawi’s bikes because they also use harder edges and angles, but on some of their latest bikes I think the designs are overdone and cluttered. Thanks for the review!

@@grahamatkins8845 Hi Graham you would need to make up your own mind about this machine. However after a test ride and a good look at this bike this is the conclusion I have drawn. Don't get me wrong BMW make some fantastic high end machines but this isn't one of them. It's a make do to fill a particular sector in the market place and the BMW marketing machine has gone into over drive to sell a very underwhelming bike. That said alot of people will buy it based on the badge and not on its credentials. I hope that explains my thoughts.

The BMW is a few grand more so I'm expecting it to be the better bike but how is the improvement vs cost? Thanks for the kind comment. Briefly, the engine is very different. More immediate torque and the engine doesn't need to spin up as much as the CB. Suspension feels better on the F900R, less harsh and better at actually absorbing the impacts of the road wheras with the CB I find it feels like it bottoms out a bit at times. Brakes on the F900R are way better. However, the CB for me wins with looks and price. It's such great bike for what you pay and still does most things pretty well!

I've reached out to BMW UK but we'll see. Worth a shot anyway! My first thought about this bike was that I didn't like the look but then I saw it in San Marino Blue and with a windscreen. It's a really useable engine, plenty of grunt but the real star is how it handles in the bends. So flickable. Slightly disappointed with the small tank size though. Defintely better than the MT07 in terms of performance but you also have to look at price too. MT07's are so cheap!

EnglishBikerDan I’m coming from a Ninja 650 so it sounds the bump in power is exactly what I’m looking for. I could find many more options out there that’ll give greater power/weight/price ratios, but this bike is perfect for me because it seems like an awesome blend of performance, safety and tech features, yet comfortable and stable riding enough for some moderate touring. I found the Ninja 650 to be an absolute rockstar as an all-rounder and perfect as my first bike and venture into motorcycling, but my only desire was that it had just a bit more power and grunt for those more spirited times outside the daily commute or tour.

@@benwells2338 Have you considered the Street Triple? Likely the R would be a good one for you. maximus9401 you know, I really haven’t looked into the Triumph all that much, though I do know it constantly gets raving reviews from journalists and owners alike. Embarrassingly to admit, I’m sure a big reason why I never gave it a fair shake is the headlight housing looking like an afterthought, sort of just protruding from the handlebars awkwardly. The 2020 refresh definitely helped resolve some of that awkward design, but it still resembles too much like Wall-E from the Pixar movie or ET the alien. To be totally fair though, there are also things I would change about the Beemer, largely how the screen is a gross flashback to early car design when large multimedia screens were first being adopted. The single headlight I feel, should also be enlarged just a tad to better meld with the heavy stance of the bodywork/fuel tank behind the handlebars. I’m an architect by profession so design is placed higher up in consideration than it might be for many others, but you’re spot on in suggesting I look at the Street Triple. Like the BMW, it too has a great blend of tech, fit and finish, power, and comfort 👌

@@benwells2338 I totally get the dislike the headlight design. They don't bother me too much, but I'm not a fan either. There are aftermarket solutions to getting a single round headlight that makes the bike look so much better. If I do get a Street Triple in the future, and I likely will, that would be on my list to modify. Other than that, the bike is almost perfect

  • @Englishbikerdan

I think some of that is down to the engine type. A big twin just won't be as smooth as an inline four due to the pulse effect. The quickshifter on the CBR650R I have at the moment is silky smooth but the one I had on my MT07 would be really clunky unless spanking it.

So guys I own a Honda CB 650r and I recently rode the BMW F900r. Now I am seriously thinking of buying the F900r. Reasons are - 1. There was no throttle play. This made low speed manoeuvres much easier and made the riding experience so much better 2. The suspension is so much better. It did absorb the bumps a lot better (The bike did not have comfort seat). Honda is not great over bumps. In UK in our B roads it can get really bumpy. 3. The bike is really nimble. The honda feels heavier on the front than this bike. The BMW was so chuckable in the corners I thought I was riding a 500cc bike. BMW is heavier than Honda but trust me it felt lighter than the CB650r. 4. Brakes are better. 5. Seating position - your knees are slightly a bite more angled than the CB650r but it made hugging the tank a lot better. I rode for an hour - did not feel uncomfortable. I am 5’ 11’’. 6. The noise from the engine is great. It comes at you from the front of the bike which you dont get on the Honda. You feel vibrations but as Dan says its good type of vibration. 7. The mirrors dont vibrate as much as the Honda. 8. No false neutrals and not a single issue with shifting (the bike I rode did not have quick shifter). 9. Last not least - yes this bike as more horsepower and torque but it was not scary at all. Its very well behaved especially if you have it at Road or Rain mode. I didnt once feel this bike was too much. If you want to have fun, take it past 4000rpm or put dynamic mode on and you will really unleash the beast. All in all, I felt much much better than the Honda. If you are undecided between the two definitely try them both on a test ride. Thought I’d share my opinion/experience. Shoutout to Dan - always love your content. Keep them coming.

So... Dan... I finally gave into the temptation and bought one! F900R SE version. Absolutely love it. Felt much much better, more confident and so much more comfortable to ride. Mind you I went for the high handlebar option as well. This bike doesnt surprise you - especially if you have it in Rain mode. It absolutely meets the brief - great first big bike and maybe even for beginners who have just passed full A license.

D R I know I’m not Dan, but i think I can help You due to the fact I’ve spend few weeks comparing street triple, Duke 790 and F900R. Simply Duke and Striple are track oriented and they are crazy, doing a lot of noises and when you ride them they act like they want a wheelies 24/7. F900R - which I chose anyway - is more a daily commuter with 10-15% less vicious intentions, but still deliver a huge amount of fun from ride and doesn’t make you feel an old, boring guy

The F900R is quite a bit heavier. I'd say the easiest way to describe it is that the 790 Duke is super light and fun with a snarling engine, the F900R is composed but firm and just gets on with it without any fuss. I love both bikes for different reasons but the F900R would be better for everyday use I feel but the 790 is more fun.

Is this still a Rotax motor like the 800s were? If so, I would highly caution anyone against buying one. I had a 2008 F800ST. It sure seemed like it checked all of the boxes- lightweight, good power and torque, impressive fuel economy. Lots of nice stuff like the underseat gas tank, single sided swingarm, belt drive heated grips. But of the 15+ bikes I've owned in the last 14 years or so it was the WORST! I hated that thing with a passion. That engine sounded like it had a bunch of loose nuts and bolts rattling around inside it due to terrible piston slap. Totally unacceptable for ANY modern engine to sound like that let alone something "premium" like a BMW. I know Rotax has made a lot of good engines and BMW makes good bikes but that parallel twin 800- avoid, avoid, avoid!!!!
