2019 Volvo V60 First Drive - Wagons Ho!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Volvo's all-new S60 is a compelling compact luxury sedan, but the real winner in this segment, IMHO, is the all-new wagon variant: the V60. It drives like the S60, has compact CUV like cargo capacity, and very little competition on our shores. It's also drop-dead sexy if I'm honest. #WagonLover

So I actually own the bigger brother v90 and It's a great car (11k over the last 9 months and have had zero issues). The seats are very/extremely comfortable , quality is top notch , excellent in rough weather conditions , and the dog gate really helps for when we take road trips. It's seems like almost everything that makes the big brother great has carried over to the little one which is a 10/10 in my book (Love my v90). I'd take this over a regal tourx even though it's smaller (It's just overall a nicer vehicle).

Like many "enthusiasts" I love wagons. We usually don't buy 'em but we love 'em. In my case I've owned a couple of Volvo wagons and a Saab wagon in the past. Loved them all. Our neighbor has a V90 wagon (not the XC) and she loves that one, too. To me, though, it's something of a beast; the V60 is more my style and size. Unfortunately, my wife suffers from crossover fever. She loves the "command" (i.e up high) driving position of our Sorento and can't be persuaded to go back to a "normal" driving position. I'm convinced, by the way, that women like my wife are a major force in crossover mania. They don't want the stigma of driving a minivan. They do want the practicality of a wagon but being surrounded by SUV's and crossovers, and gigantic pickups in traffic, they don't want to be at a disadvantage height-wise. Oh, well. It's her daily driver; she gets to choose. So good luck to Volvo for keeping alive the concept of an "estate" vehicle in the US. I doubt they'll turn the tide but bully for them.

I really dunno why Americans don't like wagons. Hatchbacks/Wagons have much better practicality than sedans, while they still have similar handling. Believe me, when you buy something from IKEA, a 65" TV, or items with large tall boxes, you will definitely want a wagon not a sedan with limited height and limited open space.

According to several forums (bimmerfest, bimmerpost, etc.) the G20 (next gen 3 series) will NOT make it in wagon guise to the US market. Which is a crying shame because it's a damned great looking, and highly practical vehicle. BMWNA has wielded the profit knife pretty hard for this generation - no manuals, no touring and all NA bound vehicles will be hecho en Mexico at the new plant when it comes online April 2019. Which probably also kills Euro Delivery options as well.

This is true of lots of car brands' wagons that are only sold overseas -- not bringing their wagons to America. It is a shame. It's actually surprising that Porsche brought its Sport Turismo to the USA this year. But wagons tend to look better, in my opinion, than most sedans. As for BMW, don't they have automatic transmissions with manual option built in, with or without paddle shifters? Even Porsches don't have manual-only transmissions any more, and they are really fun to drive in manual mode with the paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Station wagons have become such a weird thing. Wagons used to be budget family haulers until the minivan arrived. Then they became a luxury staple. Mercedes E class Wagon, Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo, Ferrari FF/GTC4Lusso, and the Volvo V60 and V90. Those are the wagon options and they’re all luxury wagons. Also I wouldn’t be surprised to see a BMW 5 series touring. Why are wagons now luxury cars?

Because no one in North America wants any of the wagons offered by Honda, Toyota, Nissan available in the Asian and European markets. However, a badge is a badge, so when MB, BMW, Volvo, Porsche, etc. offer them they'll sell to some degree. I think even the VW Jetta wagon largely goes ignored, but put an Audi badge on it and...

Because families no longer have any incentive to buy a station wagon. Why get something fast and compact when you could get a used minivan with even more room for kids and the family dog? It's just a weird inbetween that only appeals to a certain audience.

I don't think that wagons were all that much budget cars. We grew up with wagons as a kid (1960s, 1970s) because we had a big family, and those wagons cost more than sedans did at the time (Buicks, Oldsmobiles, etc.). When my wife and I started our family in the 1980s, we got a Volvo wagon because we wanted the safety and practicality (and so justified a few thousand more dollars than getting a Chevy wagon at the time). We liked the Volvo wagons so much as a practical car that we just kept buying more over the decades, and still have a Volvo wagon. Personally, I'm not so keen on all the added luxury, but they have continued to make safe and practical wagons, while other manufacturers of less-expensive cars have bailed out on wagons. Luxury wagons do sell, at least in affluent areas of America; we continue to get them not because they are luxurious but because they are well made and practical and safe. I'd rather spend much less, but the Subarus and Buick Regal and other cheaper cars don't perform as well. I'll spend an extra $10k-$15k today to get something I'd just rather be in, even if I'd rather not spend that money. For us, we spend so much time in cars that we won't scrimp on safety or comfort. It's indeed interesting that Ferrari makes a 2-door "wagon", but they start at $300k. Yes, Porsche just came out with a wagon this year in the Sport Turismo, but it starts around $100k. Both the GTC4Lusso and Sport Turismo are beautiful cars, and yes, it's interesting that these sports-car manufacturers are actually selling them. The plug-in hybrid versions of the Panamera (which include both the hatchback and the Sport Turismo models) have actually out-sold the Volvo plug-in hybrids so far in 2018, while costing 1.5-2 times more; that's mind-boggling to me. I see lots of BMW and Mercedes and Audi wagons here in the northeastern USA. Personally, I wish that Volvo and others would make decent wagons in the $30k-$40k range, but they opt not to; I'd gladly give up some of those luxury items (like high-end audio systems, when base systems are almost always plenty fine today; advanced infotainment systems; leather seats; heated rear seats; extra-large wheels; panoramic sunroofs; etc.) that come as standard to get the costs down.

They are all automatic transmission with the ability to shift into manual mode, and some Volvos have paddle shifters on the steering wheel. You can't get Porsches anymore with all-manual transmissions; Porsches come in automatic transmissions with manual option via paddle shifters, and they work really well. Even Ferraris come this way now; I drove a 650-hp FF with automatic transmission and manual paddle shifters, and it was a lot of fun to drive.

Typical examples: supermini - Fiat 500, subcompact - Ford Fiesta, compact - Chevrolet Cruze, mid-size - Subaru Legacy, executive - Toyota Avalon, full-size - Jaguar XJ. As for as Volvo: V40 - compact (C). S60/V60 - mid-size (D). S90-V90 - executive (E).

Juan José Osorio Salazar From which times 3 series is a compact car? 3 series - was for a long time an entry-level car in BMW's range, but it always was MID-size and plays in D-segment in european classification. 5 series - executive car, it always plays in a big sedan's area - segment E. It's premium competitors are S90, E-class, A6, XF, while Nissan Maxima, Toyota Avalon, Chevrolet Impala play in the same size-category, but not premium. And 7 series - full-size car or F-segment in euro-classification. Autos, which play in the same categoty: A8, S-class, XJ, Ghost, Flying Spur, Phantom, Mulsanne, Rapide and even Panamera.

Alex, I don't see any reviewers talk about that silver-colored drive-mode roller button in the center console, in any critical manner. I think that it looks ridiculous, it handles horribly for a driver (not in a good location to reach and not easy to dial and push to get to another mode), and the drive-mode controls should only be on the steering wheel (as in other car brands). What do you think? This is one of several things that made me choose another car brand this past year after seriously looking at the new Volvo 90 series (XC90, S90, V90) as well as the XC60; the interiors of these cars simply look overly feminine and simultaneously less practical. And there's also the matter of the problems with the Sensus infotainment system, which is a serious safety issue in terms of putting too much to distract the driver in only the computer screen (climate controls in particular).

And lots of Volvo enthusiasts buying these new supercharged/turbocharged 60- and 90-series vehicles are leasing them exactly because they are worried how long they'll last, compared to Volvos of yesteryear. New infotainment systems (including especially the current Volvo one) in cars are also going to be very dated in appearance and usefulness in a very short years, making it less likely that lots of these new Volvos will be kept for hundreds of thousands of miles.
